Statistician's Digest: About Basketball Rebounding Statistics Creative Analysis

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About Basketball Rebounding Statistics Creative Analysis

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
"..... A basic generalization in many of the Basketball stats formulas is how efficiently players use possessions. The object is to get players who throws better shots, perpetrate few turnovers and catch the highest possible percentage of rebounds.

We are not just looking for the players who score and rebound the most, but who do so with the fewest opportunities.

The more efficient offensive and defensive possessions a team has, the more points it will score and the fewer it will allow the other team to score.

As you can see, more rebounds are acquired on the weak side (i.e., the non-shooting side) than the strong side (the shooting side). And over 10 percent of rebounds land in a relatively tiny portion of weakside space, just beyond the restricted area. Unsurprisingly, misses from the opposite corner produce a mirror image of rebounding opportunities. In this Image by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .

Rebounding Statistics: First of all the number of Total Rebounds are of little value. In addition, since offensive and defensive rebounding requires two entirely different approaches and skills, coaches must look at offensive and defensive rebounds performances separately.

To really analyse and evaluate the team's defensive rebounding performances coaches must look at the team's rebounding percentages along with the points scored on second efforts. These figures are found on the game and season (cumulative) box score, leaders, team goals, and graphical comparison reports.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System shows all this data ordered in the "Rebound Pages Analysis" at his 2nd. Booklet: "The Game Analysis".

101 Basketball Rebounding Drills por: George Matthew Karl, Terry Stotts and Price Johnson

Rebounding Percentages: are a relatively simple additional part of box score stats. For the reason that a team’s rebounds totals are directly referenced to the number and type of missed shots in a game, rebounding totals are a poor indicator of rebounding success.

Generally the teams that have the most rebounds in a season, are also teams that have a very low field-goal percentage.

It is comprehensible - the more shots you miss, the more opportunities you have to rebound the ball.

The pace a game is played at will also influence the number of rebound opportunities a team has.

A team’s rebounding percentage is the percentage of opportunities (missed shot that can be rebounded) that a team capitalizes on. ....."

Basketball Statistics Questions: False Double Foul ~ Rule & Statistical Tracking

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
False Double Foul Statistical Tracking

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
"... A1 is fouled on the arm by B1 as he taps the ball towards the basket following a teammate’s field goal attempt bounces off the ring. A1 then comes down violently into B2 who has legal position before the ball passes through the basket.

The second official calls the foul on B1 and the first official calls a player control foul on A-1.
The two officials confer one with the other from the moment that they both have called a foul.

What is the rule and the statistical tracking according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System ..."

Rule Interpretation: This situation is a false double foul. A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and then perpetrates a player control foul. Because of the player control foul by A1, the goal is declared null.

Most shooting fouls in the NBA occur close to the rim, which is not unexpected, but a deeper look shows just how stark this effect is! In this Image by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .
Image: by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com

Since A1 was fouled in the act of shooting, A1 is awarded 2 free throws with no line up on the lane for the reason that the ball will remain dead after the free throws. The ball is awarded to team B for a throw in on the end line at the spot nearest to where the foul occurred, in this case on the free throw lane line extended spot throw in.

False Double Foul Statistical Tracking
Photograph: j-mar.xanga.com

eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking:
We track as following
1 - the missed FG of A1's teammate;
2 - an Offensive Rebound from A1 (the tap);
3 - a made foul against B1;
4 - a received shooting-foul in favour of A1;
5 - the 2 free throws from A1 which ends the Team A's possession; and finally
6 - the player control foul by A1 which begins the new possession for Team B.

See in our forum the 'false double foul' topics and the exposition "Basketball Possessions Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

Video Case Study:
An Ugly Personal Foul and Ejection after the Fight

"... There is no doubt about the rules: personal foul, ejection after the fight and free throws and possession for the opponent team. But my question is about the free throws called after the ejection: the turnover of # 42 is FORCED by the fight or UNFORCED as a technical foul ? By the way, not everyday we can watch a basketball women's fight...!

How the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book tracks this situation ? ..."

About the Available Rebounds and the Basketball Rebound Percentage
& the Basketball Training Video in our Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Available Rebounds and the Basketball Rebound Percentage

Basketball Statistician's Monday's Reflexions
In the case that a team does miss a shot, it can prolong its possession and give itself an additional chance to score by rebounding its own misses.

Team rebounds per game, team offensive rebounds per game, etc, are not a worthwhile stat, that a statistical myth:

Oreb% = Offensive Rebs / (Offensive Rebs + Opponent's Defensive Rebs)

In this way, we only measure how many rebounds a team catches based on what's available.

For example, if you use "team offensive rebounds per game," a team that shoots 30% is probably going to catch a lot of offensive rebounds, whether they're a good rebounding team or not.

If you use Oreb%, you're looking at a ratio of how many rebounds a team grabbed compared to how many were available.

This graphic shows the most common rebound location for missed left corner 3s (graphic right).
Image: by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com

Rebound percentage: The percentage of all available rebounds that a player or team catches, often fails into offensive rebound percentage and defensive rebound percentage.

This is a better measure of rebounding physical ability than rebound rate because it adjusts for game pace, although total rebound percentage is distortioned by the ratio of offensive and defensive rebound opportunities.

Therefore, a team with a really great defense will have its total rebound rate artificially exaggerated because defensive rebounds are much easier to catch.

Usually, rebound opportunities are estimated for players based on the team's rebound opportunities per minute, but play-by-play data as that used by the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System can identify a player's exact opportunities.

Sobre los Rebotes Disponibles y el Porcentaje de Rebote en Baloncesto

Rebound percentage for teams = Reb / ( Reb + OPPReb )

Rebound percentage for players =
( Reb * Min ) / (( TMReb + OPPReb ) / ( TMMin / 5 ))

In this post we show a simple transition offense of the San Antonio Spurs, but very effective if you have the right players on the court. In this image by Àlex Asensio presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .

Diagram A ~ The transition takes place directly with a first direct block from the inner 5, Tim Duncan, for the player 1, Tony Parker. Simultaneously with the direct blocking, a cut is produced by the baseline by the inner 4, Boris Diaw. Thus, Parker has the following options: penetrate or shoot to the basket, pass to Diaw in the low post or to Duncan on the front of the rim.

Diagram B ~ If he does not play any of these options, then the inner 5, Duncan, puts a new direct blockade for Parker, this time with access to the center. Coinciding with the blockade, Diaw opens to the corner. Parker options are: penetrate or shoot; pass to Diaw, 4, for a shot for 3 points; pass to Duncan, 5, then shot close to the basket for a field goal; pass to Green, 3; on the side corner for shot for 3 points; or pass to Ginobilli, 2, for a 3 points corner shot; or winning back his defender by baseline for a penetration to the basket.

Statistician's Digest: Discussion about... When is it a Basketball Assist ?

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Discussion about... When is it a Basketball Assist ?

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
About a discussion from the last Saturday at our eBA Statistics Forum
"... A5 is dribbling around outside, he drops the ball into A7 in the post. A7 dribbles a bit (dribble of a center), tries to shake his defender, succeeds and scores.
Does A5 get an assist ? ..."

Some excerpts from the conclusions:

... according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, an assist has to be "a major part of the play", which either finds the player already with a "positional advantage", or helps him or her get one ...

... if A7 is well covered and gets himself open, then no assist ...

... is time a factor? Time is not a factor - action is ...

... if A7 spends that entire 5 seconds preparing his position for his shot, then there is no assist ...

... if A7 grabs the ball without purpose to shoot ( looks around for a pass, etc, and then decides to shoot ), there is no assist ...

... to record an assist, the pass needs to lead to directly to the "act of shooting", but the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System is more flexible ...

Basketball Assists Statistical Analysis Tracking
Image: by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com

... is the quality of the pass a factor? Yes, if the receiver of the pass has to try so hard as to change direction or action to catch the pass, may be an assist is not registered ..."

... if A7 receive the pass and then has to make a subsequent move to evade the defense and score, no assist is awarded; but if he pass along the defender as result of a great pass, an assist is registered ...

... if the receiver catches the ball with no intent to shoot (i.e., is flat-footed, in a holding or passing position) and then decides to shoot, then typically no assist is awarded; but you, as that player statistician, who knows his movements and can establish that those actions are habitual, may be an assist is awarded ...

... in layup situations, any pass that put the shooter into that "act of shooting" is an assist, just as the "continuation" calls on fouls ...

... live time statisticians consider it an assist when a player finds another player open and that player makes one basketball move or less before putting up a shot: if that player dribbles more than once to gain position or sits on the ball (whether he's dribbling or not), they don't consider it an assist ...

... the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System is capable to record an assist after some dribbles and also a double assist: look for the previous messages in this blog performing the 'Search' with keyword: 'assist' ...

Friday Press Clippings: Do players "steal" rebounding opportunities ?

Friday Press Clippings:
Do players "steal" rebounding opportunities from teammates ?

Basketball Statistician's Friday Press Clippings
From Sabermetric Research
By Phil Birnbaum
Download source here: ' Do players "steal" rebounding opportunities from teammates? ' by Phil Birnbaum

"... In my previous post on rebounding, I promised to review some of the evidence supporting the "diminishing returns" hypothesis.

That's the theory that, in general, a player's individual rebound totals are not mostly a product of his own ability to snare rebounds, but, rather, predominantly because of his positioning on the court, or the role he is assigned on his team. ..."

"... Every extra rebound by the center results in 0.61 fewer rebounds by
teammates. ... "

"... That means that only 39 percent of center rebounds are "real", in the sense that the other team would have got them if not for the center's efforts.

If a center is (say) 20 rebounds above average for the season, then, on average, you should estimate that 12 of those rebounds would have been grabbed by a teammate anyway. ..."

Even the longest misses produce an average rebound distance that is only eight feet from the rim — not exactly a remote location. Part of this has to do with physics, part has to do with player spacing. Long-range shots generally occur when players are more spread out and there are fewer potential rebounders near the basket.
In this Image by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .
Image: by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com

"... The variance in team rebounds per game is LESS than the variance in rebounds per game by the center
alone ! ..."

"... Every additional rebound taken by the point guard reduces the rest of the team's rebound total by ... almost exactly one rebound: .96, to be exact. ..."

"... Taken at face value, that means that 24 out of 25 times, when a point guard gets a rebound, it's because the rest of the team deliberately leaves it for him! ..."

Basketball Statistics Questions: Basketball Full Season Per Minute Statistics don't Round

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
Basketball Full Season Per Minute Statistics don't Round

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
"... When a player is on the floor for 3 minutes and 31 seconds, the official boxscore enumerate it as 4 minutes.

How the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book tracks the influential impact on the per-minute numbers when multiplied throughout the whole season have those lost 30 seconds ? ..."

First of all, there is an open topic about "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board where I'll continue the discussion. But after going there, here you have some thoughts about:

One or some short term data analysis will be determined by random chance. We have studied this issue at the eBA Clinics Chats, and reached to the conclusion that the full season stats don't round game by game, so it's a reasonably exact parameter.

The median for Kobe's shots per minute this season is 0.7. (As always, we're factoring in free throw trips.) In fact, when Kobe shoots more 0.7 shots per minute in a game, the Lakers' offense is slightly better than when he shoots less than 0.7 shots per minute.
There's more data to this effect. It's true that in the aggregate the Lakers have performed better offensively when Kobe is not on the floor, by about five points per 100 possessions. But raw on-off data is extremely noisy, as it doesn't at all account for the other nine players on the court or those replacing the players in question. That's why analytic types much prefer adjusted plus-minus. The best current public iteration for that is ESPN's Real Plus-Minus. In that measure, Kobe rates at +1.47 on offense.
In this Image from NIKE Talk presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .
Image: NIKE Talk

It is assumed that throughout a full season there are as many round-downs as round-ups which would take out significant error or bias by amount of time played but there might be a bit of noise in outlying player game logs.

The discussion continues in the topic: "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board.

Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics: Some reflections about the 24 Seconds Statistics

Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Some Reflections about the Basketball 24 Seconds Statistics

basketball 24 Seconds Statistics
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System registers the shooting by type, zone, number of players in the play, etc. and also records the second of the shooting possession: into the 4 - 8 - 16 - 20 or 24 seconds.

The complete topic with the analysis is uploaded at the courses of the eBA ONLINE Clinics, but this synthesis clarifies the question:

On average the shots are made between the 11 and 12 seconds of the shooting clock.

A 7.6% are taken between the seconds 1 and 8/9.
In the first half of the clock: first 12 seconds, a 57.1% of the shots are taken.

Reflections about the Basketball 24 Seconds Statistics Analysis
Image: by Kirk Goldsberry from Grantland

In the last quarter of the clock: last 6 seconds, only a 15.1% of the shots were registered; but, nevertheless, the best field percentage is obtained in the last three seconds of the 24 seconds shooting clock.

This research is based on more than 1000 Euroleague games, analyzed from 1988 ( when it was called European Cup ), and is presented in the eBA Annual Clinics.

Only one team advanced to the Euroleague Final Four this season without the benefit of home-court advantage when the playoffs started. That same team is the only one that survived after losing Game 1. Both accomplishments are highly unusual, but that team, Olympiacos Piraeus, had a secret weapon in forward Georgios Printezis, who is Euroleague Basketball's choice as MVP for April. Printezis, of course, has made it a habit in his career to come up big in the most important moments. In this photograph from EuroLeague presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .

It is a very special set play of Olympiacos Piraeus, which is very good because of the ball movement. At the end of the set play, the player 2, Spanoulis, decides how to finish it.

A ~ From a diamond set, 2 receives the ball from 1, Spanoulis, after being cross screened by 4. Then 3 cuts to the right corner, 1 to the right wing and 4, MVP Georgios Printezis, ups to the top of the key. Then 5 sets a ballscreen for 2.

B ~ 5 sets a ballscreen for 2, who can attack the rim, can hit 5 or can hit 4, MVP Georgios Printezis. If 4, MVP Georgios Printezis, receives the ball then dribbles towards 1 for a hand-off pass.

C ~ Finally 3 cuts to the left corner and 1 attacks the rim. 4, MVP Georgios Printezis, can roll to the rim or can pop at the wing. 1, Spanoulis, decides between five different options to pass the ball.
