Hurley has amassed 23 state championships and more than 900 wins in 35 years as a coach, creating a national powerhouse despite substandard facilities and financial limitations.

Five of his teams have gone undefeated, including his 2007-08 team. On April 5, 2010, he was announced as the only coach to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame that year and only the third high-school coach in history to be so honored; he was formally inducted on August 13 of that year.

Bob Hurley is the father of Bobby Hurley, a former All-American point guard at Duke, and Dan Hurley, who was hired in April 2010 to coach Wagner College after years of coaching at Newark's Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, also one of the top high school programs in the nation. Dan has since hired Bobby as an assistant at Wagner.

The key to making any team great revolves around the ability of the point guard to get the job done.

Coach Bob Hurley, Sr. takes you through various drills and an off-season workout that will help any player become a better ballhandler, but Hurley also talks about the key ingredients it takes to become a great point guard.

He tells how the point guard can demoralize the opponents and will help you understand the mentality of playing the position.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Parameter in Statistics

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Parameter

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology
In mathematics, statistics, and the mathematical sciences, parameters are quantities that define certain characteristics of systems or functions.

When evaluating the function over a domain or determining the response of the system over a period of time, the independent variables are modulated, while the parameters are held constant.
The function or system may then be reevaluated or reprocessed with different parameters, to give a function or system with different behavior.

statistical parameter

Loosely speaking, then, parameters are constants in a narrow context but are variables in a larger context.

Moreover, whether a quantity is a parameter or a variable is generally determined by its role in a particular system or function, rather than by anything intrinsic to the quantity.

In non-technical contexts or in jargon, parameter may also simply be a synonym for criterion.

Read More more details about this definition and another statistical terms at our new Statistics Terminology Glossary.

"... Here’s the thing that makes life so interesting. The theory of evolution claims that only the strong shall survive.

Maybe so…maybe so…

But the theory of competition says just because their the strong doesn’t mean they cant get their ass’s kicked. Thats right.

See what every long shot, come from behind underdog will tell you is this. The other guy may in fact be the favorite, the odds maybe stacked against you, fair enough. But what the odds don’t know is this isn’t a math test.

This is a completely different kind of test. One where PASSION has a funny way of trumping logic. So before you step up to the starting line, before the whistle blows, and the clock starts ticking. Just remember out here the results don’t always add up.

No matter what the stats may say, and the experts may think, and the commentators may have predicted, when the race is on all bets are off.
Don’t be surprised if someone decides to flip the script and take a pass on yelling uncle.

And then suddenly as the old saying goes, WE GOT OURSELVES A GAME! ..."

About the Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated
& the Basketball Training Video in our Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
Are the individual statistics of good players on bad teams underrated in raw form ?
Are the individual statistics of bad players on good teams overrated in raw form ?

Some reflexions to begin the discussion:

1) Most teams without their best player will turn down the averages than with and probably lower than league average with the best players still included, so an adaptation must be overdone it in the team analysis in the cases of best players off.

2) There is team influence on player FG% and the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System performs adaptations either in the score or in the evaluation of the score.

But our System takes always in account that the player is utmostly agent or cause of the shots he takes.

3) A player on a bad team may take more hard shots and fewer not hurried ones and vice versa on a good team, so the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System takes all of these shots out and analyze the remaining shooting precision.

Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated
Photograph: Vedia PhotoStream

4) Efficiency connected with statistics might become greater on a better team when the defense needs to move outward and defend so many other menaces.

However, from another point of view, the percentage of touches might grow worse.
When you're encircled by better players, you might get less touches than if you are the exclusive talent on a bad team.

5) And finally, good teammates among the good players will still get some recognition, bad teammates on the court will not gain as many bonus points and look inferior in individual ratings because of their unsatisfactory influence on other teammate shooting.

"The Basketball Possessions Analysis and Statistical Tracking" )

About the Most Helpful Scorebook Stats before Going into the Locker Room ...!
and Basketball Actuality News Video in our Thursday's Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Most Helpful Basketball Scorebook Stats before Going into the Locker Room ...!

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
Which are the most helpful scorebook stats, for example before going into the locker room at half time, according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System,
and why ?

Logically, the best and first indicator of the winner is to be sure that the team that has the most points is my proper team..., and only after that, I see the most helpful
scorebook stats:

- defensive touches tracked and shots inside the paint... ( how aggressive are we playing ? );

- number of fouls called on each team... ( who shoots the most free throws ? );

- rebounds... ( are our rebounds at 40+ / 50+ per game and we own the boards ? );

- turnovers, steals... ( are the immediate gratification you are looking for in a game...);

- the shot chart for both teams by quarter ( are we shooting to many jumpers and not attacking the rim ? );

- the shots by 4, 8, 16, 20 & 24 seconds report ( is this game pace our game pace? );

the Most Helpful Basketball Scorebook Stats
The Most Helpful Basketball Scorebook Stats to Discuss into the Locker Room
in a Photograph by Christopher Dabe / BE

- missed layups... ( all the other problems will get over that as soon as players start making layups !);

- deflections... ( are we getting good pressure in the passing lanes ? );

- turnover/assist ratio for players and turnovers/steals ratio for the team ( more assists and steals, OK ? );

- OER (offensive efficiency rating)= total points scored divided by total possessions;

- DER (defensive efficiency rating)= total points allowed divided by total possessions;

- these last two stats take the tempo of the game out of the equation and give you a true sense of how effective you are at scoring and stopping the other team.

In my opinion, everything else is post-game analysis as proposed in my eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.

as Lebron James Becomes Youngest Member of 20,000 Point Club '
by David Friedman

"... Only 42 pro basketball players have scored at least 20,000 points and just 13 of those players also totaled at least 5000 assists.

Barring injury, James will likely become the only player ranked in the top five all-time in both departments; there is only one player who currently ranks in the top 15 in both categories: Oscar Robertson ranks sixth in assists (9887) and 12th in scoring (26,710 points), though it should be noted that when Robertson retired he ranked first in assists and second in scoring, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain. ..."

"... James led the Heat in scoring and assists (10) versus Golden State while ranking third in rebounds (seven); James supposedly had to leave Cleveland in order to surround himself with a better supporting cast so that he would not have to singlehandedly carry his team but this season James is leading the Heat in minutes, points, rebounds, assists and steals (he is also second on the team in both field goal percentage and blocked shots).

This is nothing new; last season, James led the Heat in minutes, points, rebounds, assists, steals and field goal percentage. ..."

"... It is disgraceful that the NBA and its media partners act as if the ABA never existed. ABA numbers should also count and those numbers should be mentioned when a current player reaches an important statistical milestone. ..."

Julius Winfield Erving II, commonly known by the nickname Dr. J, is a retired American basketball player who helped launch a modern style of play that emphasizes leaping and play above the rim.

"... Three of the top 10 scorers in pro basketball history--Julius Erving (sixth), Moses Malone (seventh) and Dan Issel (ninth)--played in the ABA, as did George Gervin (14th), Rick Barry (who is tied with Reggie Miller for 17th place on the all-time scoring list) and Artis Gilmore (20th).

Gervin and Malone are the only members of that group who scored 20,000 points in the NBA, so at least they are "officially" included in the 20,000 point club roster, but Erving, Issel and Barry are neither mentioned nor counted when media members discuss this topic. ..."

"... Here is the rest of the story, the information about the three members of the 20,000 point club that the NBA, NBA.com, ESPN and TNT have thrown down Orwell's "memory hole." ..... ..."

"... ...... These accomplishments should be celebrated by the NBA and Erving, Issel and Barry should be included in the "official" 20,000 point club roster--but the very people who have a responsibility to preserve and cherish the sport's history instead present a distorted, incomplete version of that history. ..." About a Last Free Throw Attempt Missed and Basket Statistics Tracking

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About a Last Free Throw Attempt Missed and Basket Statistics Tracking

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... A1 shoots a FTA and the shot hits the rim and bounces on it. A2 goes up and dunks the ball while the ball still is on or above the rim ...

And which is the statistical rule in the case A2 converts the basket after the ball has bounced to the side and it is obvious A1’ shot will not be successful.

What is the full statistical tracking according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations ..."

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
Don't charge a player for a shot from the free-throw line determined by the illegal actions of himself, or any teammates or opponents except when the shot results in a FTM .

Rule Interpretation:

- in the first case, since the free throw does not end until it is certain that the shot will not be successful, the interference was on A1’ shot.

- in the second case, since A1’ shot obviously had missed the game goes on.

Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker watch how a young LeBron James dunks after a missed free throw....
Photograph from Countdown2Lebron

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:

- in the first case, an interference on A1’ shot. Do not charge A1 with a FTA. Do not charge A2 with a FGA . Do not credit A2 with an offensive rebound, but do charge A2 with an UNFORCED turnover.

- in the second case, charge A1 with a FTA missed. Credit A2 with an offensive rebound and a FGM, and charge a FGA.

See in our forums the 'basketball free throws' topics and the exposition "Basketball Free Throws Statistical Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

About the Basketball Possessions Ending in TO & the True Percentage of Team Poss Used
& the Basketball Training Video in our Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
15,97% of the Basketball Possessions End in TO

Basketball Statistician's Monday's Reflexions
How we perform the analysis of one team´s turnovers in relation with other team, let say the next opponent at the next game ?

If a team averages 15 turnovers a game, and the next opponent is a team that forces 15 turnovers a game, is it possible to assume that there will be 15 turnovers for that game ?

Or... we must take the league average as the basic unit to analyze this data: if the league average for turnovers is 16.4 that´s means that each team turnover rate is 109,33% compared to the league...

During the eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking Clinics I expressed my opinion that 'exclusive ratings' and 'scientific formulas' employ only a lacking minimum of the significantly important statistics: turnovers per possession and Defensive turnovers per possession; games won and games lost; etc.

But all other information as playoff game vs meaningless garbage time, recent injuries, possible matchup advantages, etc. (see the thread about eBA System Non Standard Statistics ) are disregarded.

Homecourt advantage is usually disregarded too, (see this thread about Home & Road Stats: differences ) meanwhile the Game Analysis & Scouting takes in account every one of this categories, and much more.

You can reach to the answer to your question by a different way: express the team's turnover proclivity in terms of the proportion of possessions that end in turnover - according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System Archives: around the 15,97% of the possessions end in turnover.

Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant (24), against a 1 vs 4 defense !, has his shot blocked by Chicago Bulls small forward Luol Deng (9) in the final seconds of the second half of their NBA basketball game in Los Angeles on December 25, 2011. The Bulls won 88 to 87. In this UPI photograph by Lori Shepler from Dalje.com presented by #eBAStatsGroup #BasketballStatistics Analysis .

Photograph: Dalje.com

About the true percentage of team possessions used:
We know that the 'Usage Rate' is the formula to determine how many possessions a player uses. But which is its significance ?.

If a player keep an account of a high usage of possessions that means he is the one who has the greatest effect of on how well the team performs ?

So if that team is great and he leads the league in 'usage rate' would that make him the best player in the game ?

The team's offense is a measure of how well its high-usage players are shooting: in a good offense, the high-usage player is usually effective; in a bad offense, the high-usage player is usually ineffective.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System doesn't applies "Usage Rate" because it's not really measures possessions and doesn't really have anything to do with a player's defense.

We apply a stat that really measures usage:the percentage of team possessions used while on the floor.

Surely a player using up to 25-30% of team possessions is going to have a big effect on how well the offense performs, good or bad; by contrast, teams can get the best of low-efficiency, high-usage players and, rarely but possible, however have some decent offense.

Does the Home Court Advantage Really Exists ? and Basketball Actuality News Video
in our Thursday's Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Does the Home Court Advantage Really Exists ?

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
Home teams may be, typically, better than away teams.

Looking at home-away games during the first half of the season, the game trends indicates home teams often outmatch away teams.

This indicates that in the first half of the basketball season, home teams are in a
general and inherent manner stronger than away teams, in a relation
of 70-75% of winning percentage.

During the second half, this difference related to the home teams is matched and home and away teams winning percentage are equals to the same degree.

This reality brings to the conclusion that winning percentage of home teams concurrently goes down during this time.

Why this difference between the two halves of the season ?

the Basketball Home Court Advantage
Photograph: Covers

On the remark that average score margin is highly mutually related to the quality of being able to win, we must take into consideration that average score margin can be adjusted for force of games agenda and variations in day-to-day ability.

A 2/3 winning record of home teams is often cited as attest that home court advantage really exists.

But all the analysis records neither validate nor contradict that the home court advantage exists, only give us the necessity of a way to calculate it more carefully.

Basketball Fouls & Stats Rules: False Double Foul Situation
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
Basketball Fouls & Stats Rules: False Double Foul Situation

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... A1 is fouled on the arm by B1 as he taps the ball towards the basket following a teammate’s field goal attempt bounces off the ring. A1 then comes down violently into B2 who has legal position before the ball passes through the basket.
The second official calls the foul on B1 and the first official calls a player control foul on A-1.
The two officials confer one with the other from the moment that they both have called a foul.
What is the correct rule and, specially, the statistical tracking according with the eBA Basketball Statistics
System
? ..."

This situation is a false double foul. A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and then perpetrates a player control foul.

Because of the player control foul by A1, the goal is declared null. Since A1 was fouled in the act of shooting, A1 is awarded 2 free throws with no line up on the lane for the reason that the ball will remain dead after the free throws.

The ball is awarded to team B for a throw in on the end line at the spot nearest to where the foul occurred, in this case on the free throw lane line extended spot throw in.

eBA Statistical Tracking= We track as following
1 - the missed FG of A1's teammate;
2 - an Offensive Rebound from A1 (the tap);
3 - a made foul against B1;
4 - a received shooting-foul in favour of A1;
5 - the 2 free throws from A1 which ends the Team A's possession; and finally
6 - the player control foul by A1 which begins the new possession for Team B.

Rule 4: Definitions - Sections 15-23

Double fouls:
a. A double personal foul is a situation in which two opponents commit personal fouls against each other at approximately the same time.
b. A double technical foul is a situation in which two opponents commit technical fouls against each other at approximately the same time.

A false double foul is a situation in which there are fouls by both teams, the second of which occurs before the clock is started following the first, and such that at least one of the attributes of a double foul is absent.

A false multiple foul is a situation in which there are two or more fouls by the same team and the last foul is committed before the clock is started following the first, and at least one of the attributes of a multiple foul is absent.

False double fouls are rare but do happen occasionally. There's also a bunch of exceptions and technicalities to this rule.

The NFHS offers this definition (4-19-9):
A false double foul is a situation in which there are fouls by both teams, the second of which occurs before the clock is started following the first, and such that at least one of the attributes of a double foul is absent.

In other words, it's a double foul committed by opposing teams ( not necessarily the same players ). The second part of the double foul has to occur before the clock is restarted (before the clock is stopped due to the first foul). Here's an example by the NFHS:

A1 leaps high and is fouled by B1 as he taps the ball which subsequently goes through A's basket. A1 fouls B2 in returning to the floor ( e.g. on a charge ). A1 does not get credit for the basket due to the player control foul but does receive 2 free throws with the lane cleared (due to the foul by B1). Team B receives the ball following the free throws.

As it was said, false double fouls are rarely called. I would suspect that most officials would say they called the first foul and called the play dead after that. Plus this kind of scenario rarely happens.

Basketball Personal Fouls: Double Punishment because Official Error ?

Double Punishment because Official Error ?

"... Another example of the eternal problem of the game analyst by means of video: we'll punish the player twice because an official´s error ?
The referee call a 5 seconds turnover: no matter how you look at this play, there is no possible way that it could be an violation, it is evidently a play to silence the whistle.
Now, how we should track this play, in the case the invented turnover should be called ?
And what about the pushing foul over the shooter ( White #30 ) in the last play ( min 2:01 ) ..."

"Stat Gurus" Forced to Consider Possibility That the "Hot Hand" Exists

Friday Press Clippings:
"Stat Gurus" Forced to Consider Possibility That the "Hot Hand" Exists
By David Friedman

"Stat Gurus" Forced to Consider Possibility That the "Hot Hand" Exists
by David Friedman

"... "Stat gurus" puff out their chests and declare that their proprietary methods give them a significant edge over "old school" talent evaluators but research shows that tanking does not work precisely because of just how difficult it is for anyone--even a "stat guru" armed with reams of "advanced basketball statistics"--to predict/project future player performance.

Another cherished "stat guru" assumption is that the "hot hand"--also known as being in the "zone"--does not really exist.

Many people who have coached, played or even just watched basketball believe that they can recognize when a player gets "hot"--when he is in an unstoppable "zone"--but "stat gurus" dismiss such ideas. ......"

"... "Stat gurus" cheered when a 1985 study conducted by Thomas Gilovich, Robert Vallone and Amos Tversky indicated that what may look like a "hot hand" is really just a random occurrence.

One major problem with that study, though, is that it did not represent a meaningful sample size. The researchers focused on the shooting statistics of the Philadelphia 76ers because the 76ers were the only NBA team at that time which kept complete shot by shot data.

That is kind of like looking for your lost keys in one small area not because that is where you think that you lost them but because that is the only place where there is enough light to conduct your search. ..."

The data seems to show that successful shots are more likely to follow misses rather than hits. In this image from Jumbo Dumbo Thoughts presented by #eBAStatsGroup #BasketballStatistics Analysis .
Image: Jumbo Dumbo Thoughts

"... The amount of available statistical data has exploded in recent years and, after examining more than 70,000 NBA shots from the 2012-13 season, three Harvard researchers concluded that a player who has made his previous several shots is at least slightly more likely to make his next shot.

Does this study conclusively prove that the "hot hand" exists? Of course not.

The scientific method requires that hypotheses be repeatedly tested; Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity is perhaps the best known and most successful theory in scientific history but researchers to this day still test Einstein's hypotheses regarding space, time and gravity.

Any "stat guru" who asserts that he has created the definitive player rating system is not practicing science; he is peddling snake oil. ..."

"... When I criticize the flawed reasoning employed by many "stat gurus" and when I point out the inherent limitations of "advanced basketball statistics," some people misinterpret my analysis to mean that I harbor some reflexive biases against using the best possible statistical tools to better understand basketball.

My main point is that "advanced basketball statistics" should not be worshiped as some infallible bastion of truth; "stat gurus" should habitually create testable hypotheses and then see if the best, most comprehensive data that can be gathered supports or refutes those hypotheses.

If Player X supposedly has a "rating" of 33.8 and is supposedly exactly 2.5 rating points better than Player Y, what is the margin of error in that rating system? ..."

"... Ironically, as more data about basketball is collected and analyzed, it is becoming evident that assumptions made by allegedly objective "stat gurus" are not any more trustworthy than assumptions made by supposedly subjective and/or biased observers. ..." Read more ...
