Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
Keeping Stats ~ Downward Flight Ball Interference

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
... After a shot for a goal by A1, the ball is in the air when it is touched in its upward flight by B2 ( or A2 ).

In its downward flight to the basket the ball is touched by B3 ( or by A3 ).

Which is the game rule and the statistical register IN EACH CASE according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis ? ...

Rule Fundamental= If, after a field goal attempt, a player touches the ball while it is in its upward flight , all restrictions related to goal tending and interference shall apply.

Game Rule= The contact of B2 ( or A2 ) with the ball in its upward flight is legal and does not change the status of a shot for a goal . However, the subsequent contact with the ball in its downward flight by A3 or B3 is a violation .

eBA Statistical Tracking= In the case of B3, two or three points are awarded to team A, without any record against B3 - this possession ends with the basket. In the case of A3's violation, the ball is awarded to team B for a throw-in, with an 'Unforced Turnover' record against A3.

Basketball Statistics Questions: Basketball Full Season Per Minute Statistics don't Round

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
Basketball Full Season Per Minute Statistics don't Round

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
"... When a player is on the floor for 3 minutes and 31 seconds, the official boxscore enumerate it as 4 minutes.

How the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book tracks the influential impact on the per-minute numbers when multiplied throughout the whole season have those lost 30 seconds ? ..."

First of all, there is an open topic about "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board where I'll continue the discussion. But after going there, here you have some thoughts about:

One or some short term data analysis will be determined by random chance. We have studied this issue at the eBA Clinics Chats, and reached to the conclusion that the full season stats don't round game by game, so it's a reasonably exact parameter.

The median for Kobe's shots per minute this season is 0.7. (As always, we're factoring in free throw trips.) In fact, when Kobe shoots more 0.7 shots per minute in a game, the Lakers' offense is slightly better than when he shoots less than 0.7 shots per minute.
There's more data to this effect. It's true that in the aggregate the Lakers have performed better offensively when Kobe is not on the floor, by about five points per 100 possessions. But raw on-off data is extremely noisy, as it doesn't at all account for the other nine players on the court or those replacing the players in question. That's why analytic types much prefer adjusted plus-minus. The best current public iteration for that is ESPN's Real Plus-Minus. In that measure, Kobe rates at +1.47 on offense.
In this Image from NIKE Talk presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .
Image: NIKE Talk

It is assumed that throughout a full season there are as many round-downs as round-ups which would take out significant error or bias by amount of time played but there might be a bit of noise in outlying player game logs.

The discussion continues in the topic: "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board.

Basketball Statistics Questions: Throw-in Crossing the Plane & Video Case Study

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
Throw-in Crossing the Plane Statistical Tracking

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
... Some question about throws-in rule and statistical registration:

A1 is awarded a throw-in. While holding the ball, A1's hands crosses the plane of the boundary line so that the ball is above the in-bounds area. B2 catches the ball that is in A1's hands or taps the ball out of A1's hands.

How we rule this situation and register the statistics according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book ? ...

Commentary About the Rule=
Before a thrower-in has released the ball on a throw-in, it is possible that the throwing-in motion could cause that player's hand(s) with the ball to break the plane of the boundary line separating the in-bounds area from the out-of-bounds area. In such situations, it continues to be the responsibility of the defending player to avoid interfering with the throw-in by contacting the ball while it is still in the hands of the thrower-in.

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
B2 has interfered with the throw-in, thereby delaying the resuming of the game. A warning shall be given to B2 and communicated to coach B and this warning shall apply to all team B players for the remainder of the game. The repetition of a similar action by any team B player may result in a technical foul.
In the described case in the question, no statistical registration is made, but if it was called a technical foul, a UNFORCED TURNOVER is charged against the offender player in the category "TF".

Mar 8, 2014; Durham, NC, USA; Duke Blue Devils students taunt North Carolina Tar Heels guard Leslie McDonald (2) as he throws the ball inbounds to a teammate in their game against the Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium. In this Photograph by Mark Dolejs from USA TODAY Sports presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .
Photograph: by Mark Dolejs from USA TODAY Sports

About the Video Analysis=
One commentary about the rules to resume this topic: the defense may not break the plane of the line, if so they will receive a warning and then a technical foul. If the defense breaks the plane and touches the ball or the player BEFORE THE BALL IS RELEASED across the plane the penalty is a technical foul. When we analyze a basketball game we must have the video analysis help to decide the responsibility of each one of the player in this situation.

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
2 Seconds To Go, 2 Points Ahead and Last Free Throw

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
...A well known game situation: 2 seconds to go, 2 points ahead and last free throw. The player intentionally misses the free-throw according with the indications from the bench to avoid a complete 2 seconds possession for the opponent. He succeed and they win the game. About the Assists Tracking in the NBA and according the eBA System
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Assists Tracking in the NBA and according the eBA System

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... How are assists awarded in the NBA?

Is it a pass that results in a basket with no dribbles, one dribble, etc., in between?

As in the NBA everything is different: are there specific guidelines for official
tracking ? ..."

Basically, there is no difference with another leagues in this category, only the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System have a special treatment with the assists.

According to the NBA’s statisticians' manual, an assist is credited to the player tossing "the last pass leading directly to a field goal if, and only if, the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating immediate reaction toward the basket."

Consequently, according to the traditional statisticians' rules an assist is a pass that lead directly to a basket.
Any assist is credited to the player tossing the last pass leading directly to a field goal, if and only if the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating immediate reaction toward the basket.
No more than one assist is to be credited for each field goal.
An in-bounds pass can be an assist, if it leads directly to a field goal.

An assist can be credited if a receiving player takes a dribble, so long as he makes an immediate reaction toward the basket.

John Stockton, the all-time NBA leader in assists and steals, will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame by the second greatest true point guard ever, Isiah Thomas. To put his statistical accomplishments into perspective, he had 15,806 assists and 3,265 steals. The #2 assists leader was Marc Jackson with 10,334 assists and the #2 steals leader was Michael Jordan with only 2,514 steals.
Photograph: THERE he is

Another obvious element is that this metric is somewhat dependent on how often a team made three-pointers, because the circumstantial numerical evidence that so many three-pointers are assisted.

It is not surprising at all that three-pointers tend to get more assists, having a portion of two-pointers which are "un-assistable", the result of put-backs and tip-ins, while few threes are shot off of the dribble.

Another evidence in our assist analysis maybe a good shooting team that doesn't score often on put-backs, so there were more two-point assist opportunities.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, is able to give two assists - like in hockey - on one play.
Many times, a point guard gives a great pass, and another player makes a pass that leads to the basket.

The first pass gets a credit in the game analysis chapter - no at the stats numbers ! -, because it can be more important than the second pass. On the other hand, a great pass that leads to the shooter being fouled is credited as an assist.

In the case of free throws, eBA System register the assist if the fouled player makes both (or the three) throws or one of them. But in this case, in our rate we give the assist a qualification of one point for each free throw made.

The eBA System registers the following stats about Assists, in addition to the Made and Received ones:

Defensive assists, missed assists, potential assists, assists in paint, assists outside of paint, within each, assists leading to jump shots, assists leading to lay-ups, assists leading to foul shots, and within each of these, are they part of fast break or not.

See in our forums the 'basketball assists' topics and the exposition "Basketball Assists Statistical Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

Basketball 3/5/8/24 Seconds Cases: Team TO or Personal Turnover ?

This video clip features a fast break basket by Bostjan Nachbar ... and concludes with the Raps getting called on a 24 second shot clock violation. But previously there is an altered shot gained by the red Nets...

About a Traveling TO, a 8/10 Seconds Backcourt Violation & Pts Scored in the Wrong Basket
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About a Traveling Turnover, a 8/10 Seconds Backcourt Violation & Pts Scored in the Wrong Basket

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... A1 jumps and shoots, but B1 taps the ball and is still in A1 ones hand. A1 returns with ball that never left his hand.

Is this jump ball, traveling, or a block shoot? B1 just barely tap the ball in the shooters hand.

And what is the statistician rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ..."

eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking:
If B1 prevents A1 from releasing the ball, it's a held ball, with the statistical record according the alternating possession rule.

If A1 chooses not to release the ball, it's traveling, recording a forced turnover against A1 and a forced steal in favour to B1, the player deflecting, or team player, depending upon the situation.

Photograph: zimbio.com

"... The 8 / 10 seconds time limit rule violation is a PERSONAL or TEAM turnover ? FORCED or UNFORCED ?
By the way, all the basketball leagues have this rule ? Any difference ? ..."

eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking:
The 8/10 seconds backcourt violation is generally a TEAM TURNOVER, being FORCED or UNFORCED depending upon the opponent's action: if it is as result of an all or half court press defense (FORCED) or a defender's error (UNFORCED).

"... To whom are credited the points scored in the wrong basket ?
To any player ? To the opponent captain ? And what the stats rule ? Turnover ? ..."

Points scored in the wrong basket are never credited to a player, but are credited to the team in a footnote. Points awarded for basket interference or goaltending by the defense are credited to the shooter. When a live ball goes in the basket, the last player who touched the ball causes it to go there ( from the Instructions & Rules Coverage - Scoring 9. ).

About Traveling Outside the Court: Rule Basketball Statistics Tracking

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... Can a travel be called on a player outside the court, clock stopped and the player is given the ball for a pass in? ..."

Una violación de 'pasos' no podrá ser penada, pero podrá ser una violación en la puesta en juego.

Basketball Rule Fundamentals:
Un jugador que ejecuta una puesta en juego:
- no demorará más de cinco (5) segundos en liberar el balón;
- no pisará dentro del campo mientras tenga el balón en su(s) mano(s);
- no causará que el balón toque fuera del campo de juego, después que el balón ha sido liberado;
- no tocará el balón en el campo de juego antes de que éste sea tocado por otro jugador;
- no causará que el balón entre directamente al aro;

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

En el caso de una violación en la puesta en juego:
- en la que el jugador encargado de la acción demora más de cinco (5) segundos en liberar el balón, sin interferencia de un jugador oponente, una 'pérdida de balón personal no forzada' en la categoría de 'puesta en juego' será registrada;
- cuando la demora de produce por la acción del oponente, una defensa cerrada por ejemplo, será registrada una 'pérdida de balón de equipo forzada' en la categoría de 'puesta en juego'.

About a Last Free Throw Attempt Missed and Basket Statistics Tracking

And which is the statistical rule in the case A2 converts the basket after the ball has bounced to the side and it is obvious A1’ shot will not be successful.

What is the full statistical tracking according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations ..."

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
Don't charge a player for a shot from the free-throw line determined by the illegal actions of himself, or any teammates or opponents except when the shot results in a FTM .

Rule Interpretation:

- in the first case, since the free throw does not end until it is certain that the shot will not be successful, the interference was on A1’ shot.

- in the second case, since A1’ shot obviously had missed the game goes on.

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:

- in the first case, an interference on A1’ shot. Do not charge A1 with a FTA. Do not charge A2 with a FGA . Do not credit A2 with an offensive rebound, but do charge A2 with an UNFORCED turnover.

- in the second case, charge A1 with a FTA missed. Credit A2 with an offensive rebound and a FGM, and charge a FGA.
