About Free Throws Line Up - Rules Differences & Statistics Tracking
& the Basketball Training Video in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Free Throws Line Up - Rules Differences & Statistics Tracking

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
At NF - National Federation (U.S. High School):
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- as many as 8 players can be on the lane (4 each side), and you could have 5 from one team, as any vacant spot can be filled by an opponent.

At NCAA, NBA, FIBA:
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- only a maximum of 5 players may be on the lane: 3 opponents of the shooter and 2 teammates.

At NBA:
c- the lowest 4 spots MUST be filled on the final throw.

At FIBA:
c- any of the spots may be empty, but must remain empty if the team entitled to them does not fill it.

At NF, NCAA, FIBA:
d- players not in marked lane spots, must remain outside the 3 point arc and behind the free throw line extended until the ball strikes the ring.

At NBA:
d- this part of the rule is somewhat more liberal.

Basketball fans have made an artwork out of distracting the players at free throws time !

Free throws are an organised process, for the statistician too. Let us see something about the basketball statistics tracking in this case. Really, is the shoot we have all the time to record data. The shooter takes his place behind the free throw line (4.5 metres or 15 feet from the basket). All other players must stand in their correct places until the ball leaves the shooter's hands:

The number of players allowed by the rule - according the introduction - lines up along the sides of the restricted area ( keyhole, paint, lane ). These players are normally the ones that rebound the ball. Three or four line up on one side and two or four on the other. In all the rules, a defensive player always takes the place closest to the basket.

The remaining players, must remain behind the three point line and the free throw line extended (an imaginary line extended from the free throw line in both directions to the sidelines).

Leaving their designated places before the ball leaves the shooter's hands, interfering with the ball, and (for the defensive team only) attempting to put off the shooter, are all violations. In addition, the shooter must release the ball within five seconds (ten in the NBA) and must not step on or over the free throw line until the ball touches the ring.

- A violation by the shooter cancels the free throw and the statistician records a missed free throw and a team rebound for the opponents, in case of last free throw;

- a violation by the defensive team results in a substitute free throw if the shooter missed and no stats tracking in the possessions counting, only at the play-by-play relate - see eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System;

- a violation by the offensive team or a shot that completely misses the ring and backboard results in the loss of possession to the defensive team ( only if it is on the last free throw ), the statistician records a missed last free-throw and a defensive team rebound on FT for the defensive team.

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics: Who owns the basketball team statistical data?

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Who owns the basketball team statistical data?

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
When the statistician ends his work and send the game analysis report: is the statistician owed a right to use the data for publication purposes ?

First of all, at the early stages of the season, and in order to eliminate doubt from the beginning of the statistical employment, a document of agreement between the basketball team's manager and the statistician certainly would make clear and more comprehensible each party's respective obligatory preconditions and rights.

If the agreement involves a total permission, we´ll have no any problems.

Now, when the statistician works for a basketball team, data ownership clearly belongs to them.

Professional Basketball Player Performance Trends
Image: eBA System

If it was agreed at the pre-season and contractually that the basketball team owns the data, and the statistician is partially allowed to use the data for publication purposes, obviously there is an obligation to hide the basketball team's and institution's identities to protect their rights to anonymity in accordance with this right of limited use.

In any case, the head coach and the manager should be informed of such intended use of data and supplied with a copy of the final written research.

About the Applicability of a Statistical System for High School Basketball
& the Basketball Training Video in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Applicability of a Statistical System for High School Basketball

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
In our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Clinics, the participants always ask about the applicability of our statistical system for high school basketball.

It is inevitable: last years high school students get scouters attention ! We read in one of our articles in the Scouting section an appeal to the high school students "to be sure to enjoy their High School Basketball experience, and sell-out for the team !

Some student/athletes over-emphasize the recruiting process and end up under-achieving because of the excessive pressure they put on themselves to impress recruiters, an over-emphasis upon statistics, or saving themselves for college. Work hard, hustle, and play your game to help your team!"

It is clear, from the name of our system and the site, that we are working for "basketball professional teams". I don't think that a complete statistical system must be applied in the High School, but about the fact that the high school coach must keep basics statistics we have no any doubt, specially on the last years.

....work with your players on basketball fundamentals !

And its use and results must be emphasized in the coaching program: that's mean, the use of the stats to help the player to improve himself in the rights areas and to assist the coach in the programming of his trainings more accurately.

Perhaps the clinics participants intended to ask if all this set of complex formulas of analysis are necessary at high school.... Please hear to this old basketball coach and statistician analyst: all the time you can.... work with your players on basketball fundamentals !

The future NBA Coach of your actual players will give, however secretly, the credit to You....!

About the Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated
& the Basketball Training Video in our Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
Are the individual statistics of good players on bad teams underrated in raw form ?
Are the individual statistics of bad players on good teams overrated in raw form ?

Some reflexions to begin the discussion:

1) Most teams without their best player will turn down the averages than with and probably lower than league average with the best players still included, so an adaptation must be overdone it in the team analysis in the cases of best players off.

2) There is team influence on player FG% and the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System performs adaptations either in the score or in the evaluation of the score.

But our System takes always in account that the player is utmostly agent or cause of the shots he takes.

3) A player on a bad team may take more hard shots and fewer not hurried ones and vice versa on a good team, so the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System takes all of these shots out and analyze the remaining shooting precision.

Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated
Photograph: Vedia PhotoStream

4) Efficiency connected with statistics might become greater on a better team when the defense needs to move outward and defend so many other menaces.

However, from another point of view, the percentage of touches might grow worse.
When you're encircled by better players, you might get less touches than if you are the exclusive talent on a bad team.

5) And finally, good teammates among the good players will still get some recognition, bad teammates on the court will not gain as many bonus points and look inferior in individual ratings because of their unsatisfactory influence on other teammate shooting.

About the Points per Possession Basketball Statistic
& the Basketball Training Video in our Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Points per Possession Basketball Statistic

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
Many coaches are now using what is called Points/Possession, or Turnovers/Possession.

The Pts./Poss. is an impartial reliable stat when all things are considered.

However it doesn't take into account the optimal pace as which a team plays.

Team A that receives 90 points may actually produce a better defensive efficiency than team B that allowed 80 points: in a fast paced game, Team A received 90 points but in 90 possessions.

This means their defensive efficiency was 1.0. Team B on the other hand received only 80 points but in a much slower paced game in 60 total possessions.

That is a defensive efficiency of 1.3 actually worse than team A who allowed ninety points.

Here at Respect Kobe, we pride ourselves on being fair and rational in our evaluation of players — including our beloved Kobe Bryant, as well as any challengers to his title of “best basketball player alive.”
Photograph: Kobe Bryant. Respect.

Points per possession is a completely good stat but what is more important is to break it down into ranges such as an offensive or defensive efficiency when you score or allow 90-100 points, 80-90, 70-80 and so forth.

The parameter we will find is that the team have better offensive and defensive efficiency ratings when he plays at its team's optimal pace.

The eBA System do this break down in his "Quarters Reports", when the game is Analyzed every 5 minutes by separate.

About the Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out & Basketball Training Video
in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
How to make a statistical calculation of the player's missed playing time ascribable to fouls ?
Is there in the the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System some data about the player utilization and substitution set of rules in the foul trouble case ? That means to say, when they are sent to the bench and after which foul number ?

To calculate missed playing time ascribable to fouls, we must base our analysis in the following assumptions about player usage and substitution patterns:

In FIBA & NBA:
No change when a player commits his first foul.
Committing his second a player foul would be replaced and have to wait at the bench until the half of the second quarter.
A player committing his third foul would be replaced and would be a bench player until the third quarter.
With the critical (in FIBA) fourth foul committed a player would be replaced and have to sit until the beginning of the the fourth quarter.
In NBA:
A player committing his fifth foul would have to be out of the game until the half of the fourth quarter.

Sarunas Jasikevicius (R) and Robertas Javtokas of Lithuania sit on the substitution bench during their friendly basketball game against Turkey as part of their training for the Beijing Olympics, at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel in Macau August 2, 2008
Photograph: Day Life

Now, how often do players foul out of a game ? When the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul happens ? Which percentage of the players with the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul are fouled out ?

- 49% of the 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA come with about 3 minutes left in the game: remember to consider, 40 minutes in FIBA and 48 in the NBA !
- 82% of all players who perpetrate a 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA do not foul out.

This is reasonable from the moment the studies from eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System demonstrates that even the most players having a tendency to foul lose only a few minutes per game because of their foul trouble. But they play the great majority of their minutes near the danger of fouling out.

The analysis of the different types of Foul Trouble, were studied in the eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking Clinic.

About the Basketball Possessions Concept & the Good and Bad Statistics
& the Basketball Training Video in our Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Weekly's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Possessions Concept & the Good and Bad Statistics

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
When using possessions to rate offenses and defenses, an excellent exercise in getting to know basketball, the benefits of this definition become clear:

"Possession for a team, it is the period of play between when one team gains control of the ball and when the other team gains control of the ball. For an individual, a possession or part of a possession is credited when that individual causes to end his/her team's possession."

We'll analyze the following 2 situations:

1) A player brings the ball up court, takes a 20 foot jump shot and makes it.

2) A player brings the ball upcourt, takes a 20 foot jump shot and misses, but a teammate rebounds, misses the putback, then get his own rebound and finally puts in a layup.

The first situation involves one scoring possession and one total possession regardless of which definition is used.

The second situation has one scoring and one total possession using above definition. Using the other meaning, the second situation involves one scoring possession and three total possessions.

Now, which situation represented the better offense ?

Oscar Robertson is the only player to ever average a triple-double in a season. He had amazing numbers in the 1961-1962 season with 30.8 points, 11.4 assists and 12.5 rebounds. In this AP photograph by Hans Von Nolde from Grantland presented by #eBAStatsGroup #BasketballStatistics Analysis .

About Basketball Possessions and the Good & Bad Statistics:
David Berri, Martin Schmidt, and Stacey Brook, authors of The Wages of Wins, have come up with an algorithm for assessing the value of professional basketball players, using econometric methods to objectively valuate basketball statistics in terms of their impact on winning games.

The basic theory of the authors is that measurements of a player's efficiency are better tools for evaluating players than statistics like "points per game."

Since teams have an equal number of possessions in a basketball contest, the team that efficiently uses those possessions is more likely to win.

Turning the ball over without scoring is "bad," while converting a possession into points is "good."

The authors regressed nine statistics to find their relative impact on wins. Here's a simplification of their findings.

"Good" statistics: Each point, rebound, and steal have relatively equal impacts on winning. They are about twice as important as each block and assist. So, to quantify the positive statistics, here's a simple formula:

points + rebounds + steals + 1/2 (blocks) + 1/2 (assists)

"Bad" statistics: field goal attempts and turnovers have equally negative impacts on winning. They are twice as bad as free throw attempts and personal fouls. Here's a simple formula for the "bad" stats:

field goal attempts + 1/2 (free throw attempts) + turnovers + 1/2 (personal fouls)

Putting this all together we get what the authors call a "Win Score":

Points + Rebounds + Steals + 1/2 (blocks) + 1/2 (assists) - field goal attempts - 1/2 (free throw attempts) - turnovers - 1/2 (personal fouls)

Win Score proves to be an excellent method of comparing players who play the same position. But since power forwards and centers tend to have higher average Win Scores than guards, adjustments need to be made when comparing little men to big men.

About the Basketball Second Chance Points & Basketball Training Video

About the Basketball Second Chance Points

About Statistics & Statisticians... and Coaches that
As you surely noticed, the graduates at the concluded eBA CLINICS ONLINE rewrite, correct, enhance and update every thread at our Basketball Statistics Forums, as part of their practical work. Now we are merging all the unitary messages and similar ones in a common thread ( thus reducing the number of topics ): and the threads are categorized according to the eBA Basketball Analysis System contents, which is a more practical approach to the search at the Basketball Statistics Study Forums.

"....When a team shoots a high percentage from the floor, the number of second chance opportunities will distinctly be smaller, but the efficiency of the second chance possession is not a function of the number of second chance opportunities in a game.

Consequently, if teams have higher efficiency during second chances than first chances, a team's game efficiency, taking all the different aspects into account, is nearly always increased only because the offensive rebounding. By contrast, since that relationship appears alternating, the important objective of collecting and evaluating data is in the bonus possessions produced by the net offensive rebounding differential.

... Pao Gasol shoots in a second chance opportunity ...
Photograph: SILive.com

A well balanced team would be more effective on second chance points than on first chance points because, on most first chance possessions, the defense is accomplished and the offensive team must attack the set defense to find their scoring opportunities.

In whatever manner, with possessions that go on with an offensive rebound, the defense is often lacking order at the instant of the rebound, and these possessions often end with either a foul [the most effective method of scoring] or a tap-in or other relatively easy shot.

Only when the offensive team decides to withdraw the ball back out following an offensive rebound and run its half court offense would the defense have an opportunity to reset itself.

Concisely, to resume this post, teams obtain more easy scores in second chance possessions than in first chance possessions, so they must be registered and analyzed as it was explained and is included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System. ...." Statistician's Digest: Basketball Registering Statistics Case Studies

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
eBA sketball Statistics Case Study: About Basketball Rebounds

Basketball Statistics eBA Case Study
Different Situations in a Basketball Rebound... Case Study

"... A missed shot comes off the rim and bounces along the floor. A1 is in position to pick up the ball, but B5 gains control. However, B5 fouls A1...

• case a) before either can touch the ball, or
• case b) as B5 is the first to touch the ball, or
• case c) after B5 is first to gain control of the ball, or
• case d) after A1 is first to touch the ball.

What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( forced or unforced TO; good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound, etc.) ... ?"

Conclusion:
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
A player should be credited with a rebound only if the player earned that rebound before the ball was dead. What happened after the ball became dead and what would have happened if the ball had not become dead might be different.

The statistician should not attempt to decide what would have happened, but should decide only what did happen. However, if there is doubt about player control, the statistician may assume that there was control.

Sometimes there is doubt about whether a player has gained control of the ball before a certain act takes place. In such cases, the statistician should use the following guidelines.
• (a) If the statistician feels there was a possibility of player control, then the play shall be treated as though there was player control.
• (b) If the statistician feels there definitely was not a possibility of player control, then it shall be treated as though there was no player control.

Different Situations in a Basketball Rebound
Photograph from Red Box Pictures

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

• In (a) the ball became dead when the foul was committed. Charge B5 with a BAD Personal Foul and credit Team A with a LONG UNDISPUTED Dead-ball Offensive Rebound.

• In (b) if B5 gained control before the foul, the official will have indicated that the foul was a player-control foul and B5 would be credited with an individual LONG DISPUTED Defensive Rebound and charged with a FORCED Turnover.

If there is no indication of player control, then credit Team A with a LONG DISPUTED Dead-ball Offensive Rebound.

• In (c) credit B5 with an individual LONG DISPUTED Def Rebound and charge him or her with an UNFORCED turnover

• In (d) if the statistician thinks that A1 possibly had control before the foul, credit A1 with an individual LONG DISPUTED Off Rebound.

If the statistician thinks that A1 definitely did not have control, credit Team A with a LONG UNDISPUTED Dead-ball Offensive Rebound.

Basketball Starting Centers Merit More Minutes & Tall Men's Shots Related to Game Situation
& the Basketball Training Video in our Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Basketball Starting Centers Merit More Minutes

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
Dennis Hans says in this article "Starting centers merit more minutes" that the modern center's constant struggle to avoid foul trouble has little to do with the modern game of basketball and proposes four common sense changes:

1) Make non-brutal illegal screens a loss-of-possession violation, like traveling. ...

2) Quit treating intentional fouls as if they were non-intentional. ...

3) Give each team one “foul coupon.” ...

4) Make it a loss-of-possession violation (not a foul) for a low-post player to back, buttwhack or low-shoulder his way into the lane. ...

And I think that in order to recognize the importance of the tall men´s work we must reach the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System and read the chapter of the opponents errors forced by our tall men and the block shots which ends in our baskets on the other side of the court.

Tall men are not as spectacular as the guards, but remember my post with the 'Seven Feet Theory', which is supported by recognized NBA scouters: to win actually a championship you must have a 7 feet ( 2,13 m ) player in the middle of the paint area.

Teams with small players are more spectacular and quick, play funny basketball and may reach the top... but the winners are teams with tall men.

Mamadou Ndiaye is a 7’6″ freshman center on UC Irvine’s basketball team, and the tallest player in college or the NBA. At one point in the team’s loss to Oregon on Tuesday night, he was guarding Johnathan Loyd, a 5’8″ point guard. If Loyd was not calling for the ball and yelling 'mouse in the house' he missed a once-in-a-lifetime comic opportunity. • type of shot (shot selection);

• shooting clock (seconds remaining);

• shot result ( made or missed ) and

• offensive and defensive alignments for each one of the shots.

The general character and site of the shot attempt can be a manifestation of the stage of difficulty:

1) End-line plays present a bigger menace than sideline out of bounds;

2) In the main, inbounds plays have both inside and outside choices with a condition to keep from performing a 5 second violation;

3) As a whole the first precedence of the defense against end-line out of bounds plays is impeding an easy basket at the rim.

The basketball statistician must knows that The achievement of their objective by the offense or defense returning from a time out in closely contested end game situations are more significant than others - these are about entirely sideline plays

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System also registers the success rates of a specific team or coach after a timeout, both the offense and defense should are analyzed.
