Pau Gasol i Sáez (Catalan pronunciation: [ˈpaw ɡəˈzɔɫ]) (born July 6, 1980) is a Spanish professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He was born to Marisa Sáez and Agustí Gasol, and he spent his childhood in Spain. Gasol was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2001 NBA Draft, but his rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, with whom he won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

He currently holds the Memphis Grizzlies franchise records for career games played, minutes played, field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, offensive, defensive, and total rebounds, blocked shots, turnovers, and points.

After seven seasons with the team, Gasol was traded to the Lakers on February 1, 2008. His younger brother, Marc Gasol, who was involved in that trade, is also a professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA.

Basketball Legends ~ Great Basketball Players:
One-on-One with Basketball Legend Karl Malone

About Scoring:
"A lot of people can score, but a lot of them can't score when it's on the line. Their nuts get tight and they can't shoot it.
Great Basketball Pictures
Sometimes that lump gets in your throat, that arm feels like it's about two hundreds pounds, your legs can't jump. The pressures are awesome.

There are a lot of starters in the game, everybody starts; but there are not too many finishers...."

About Rebounders:
"Hell, I hate to rebound; I want to shoot, but somebody's got do the job. But there are guys who, when they tighten up their shoes before the game, are saying: 'Give me thirty boards tonight.'

I look at them like, 'Fool, you're crazy.'
These guys are talking about some glass. We call it 'eating glass.'

That's all they like to do. They will run over the coaching staff and the referee and half the team there to get that rebound - at all costs...." Karl Malone

Chapters in the Basketball History:
Richard (Rick) Francis Dennis Barry III

Richard (Rick) Francis Dennis Barry III (born March 28, 1944, in Elizabeth, New Jersey) is a retired American professional basketball player.

Unforgettable Basketball Legends: Rick Francis Dennis Barry III
Photograph: Vedia PhotoStream

Rick Barry - 1977
Master of the skill of Making A Freethrow

He is considered by many veteran basketball observers to be one of the greatest pure small forwards of all time as a result of his very precise outside shot, uncanny court vision, knowledge and execution of team defense principles, tenacious and ofttimes demanding will to win, and unorthodox but accurate underhanded "granny shot" free throw shooting.

Barry is one of few elite players who have altered their games without losing effectiveness; he broke into the professional ranks as a rebounder and all-purpose points machine before he morphed into a primary ball distributor and lethal perimeter threat.

Named one of the 50 Greatest Players in history by the NBA in 1996, Barry is the only player to lead the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), ABA and NBA in scoring for an individual season. In 1987, Barry was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Barry also ranks on the short list of greatest underdog players in basketball history, as his teams repeatedly overachieved despite marginal talent around him. Longtime NBA writer Paul Ladewski has referred to him as Ricky Balboa, a reference to Rocky Balboa, the prize fighter of motion picture fame who was at his best in the face of long odds.

Height: 6'10"  ~  Weight: 245 lbs.
Born: November 16, 1982 in Lake Wales, Florida, USA
High School: Cypress Creek in Orlando, Florida
College: University of Memphis
Coaching record: Drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the 1st round (9th pick, 9th overall) of the 2002 NBA draft.

Amar'e Carsares Stoudemire (born November 16, 1982 in Lake Wales, Florida) is an American professional basketball player for the NBA's Phoenix Suns. He is a 6-foot-10-inch (208 cm) and 249-pound (113 kg) power forward/center.

Stoudemire won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 2003, made four appearances in the NBA All-Star Game, made first-team All-NBA Team in 2007, and won Bronze Medal with the United States men's national basketball team at the 2004 Olympic Games.

Stoudemire's first name had previously been listed in the Phoenix Suns media guide as "Amaré" or "Amare", but it was changed to "Amar'e" in October 2008. Stoudemire told NBA.com that his name had always been spelled "Amar'e", but the media had been spelling it incorrectly since he joined the NBA.

Off the court: In November 2008, Stoudemire received the NBA's Community Assist Award, for his work with his Each 1, Teach 1 Foundation, and its efforts to provide safe drinking water in Sierra Leone by funding the building of water wells in impoverished villages. Stoudemire visited the country in Summer 2008, making visits to water well sites and meeting with President Ernest Bai Koroma and the rest of the cabinet.

...this Month Basketball Book eBA DVICE !
Beckett Basketball Card Price Guide by James, III, Dr. Beckett

Beckett Basketball Card Price Guide
By: James, III, Dr. Beckett

If You're A Basketball Card Collector, This Is The Book For You!

The Beckett Basketball Card Price Guide is the most comprehensive basketball card price guide available!

Are you a superstar or team card collector? If you are, then Dr. James Beckett and his staff have produced this book just for you! You get extensive lists and prices for all important, popular basketball card sets since 1933.

Most card series listed picture a front and back shot of a representative card.

Includes values for every individual card and complete set listing in three condition grades.

Checklist-like listing of every card in the set.

Complete description includes card features and composition of set.

"... This is a great source for the basketball collector. It is the most recent of the annual beckett price guides and provides listings for card sets that can't be found such as classic, scoreboard, chivas de guadalajara, and 5-sport sets. No card is left out has been left out.

This updated book now gives you updated values for some of Kobe Bryant's rarest cards like the Scoreboard Die-Cut and the Chivas de Guadalajara team set Kobe RC edition. This book is recommended to all collectors. ..."

"... Look, we all know that monthly price guides cannot possibly keep up with the explosion of basketball cards produced by all the companies putting out cards today. All they can do is focus on the name cards on the stars. But if you are trying to put together a set of 1957-58 Topps, 1986-87 Fleer or 1992-93 Hoops, then you need to know ALL the cards so you are prepared for dealers whether they organize their cards by number or team or player's name.

With the "Beckett Basketball Card Price Guide" you have your best chance to find out exactly what is out there. True, in practical terms the prices quoted have a chance of being obsolete by the time you track down the cards you want, but the key thing about all of these Price Guides is that they list all the cards, including all the extras, bonsues, special sets and the like.

Whether you are looking for a card of this year's MVP, Allen Iverson or Ernie Calverley (he was on the first basketball card put out by Bowman in 1948), this is the book you want to use to put together your want lists when I head out to the card shows. ..."

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Jerry Lucas !

Jerry Ray Lucas (born March 30, 1940) was a basketball player from the 1950s to the 1970s, and is now a memory education expert. In 1996, the NBA's 50th anniversary, he was named one of the 50 greatest players in National Basketball Association history. He was named to Sports Illustrated's five-man College All-Century Team in 1999.

"... In 1960, Lucas was also named to the U.S. Olympic team for the Rome Games that year. The team, which also listed Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Walt Bellamy, and Terry Dischinger among its members, is generally considered the greatest amateur team of all time. The team's youngest player at age 20, Lucas was its leader and star at center. The U.S. team roared through the international tournament to easily win the gold medal. Lucas was the team's co-leading scorer and leading rebounder. He made a shocking 84% of his shots in nine Olympic games, which included a much-watched win over the Soviet Union. Lucas also was noteworthy as he had memorized paragraphs of Japanese, Italian and Russian, and would briefly converse with players speaking those languages during the Games. U.S. coach Pete Newell called Lucas "the greatest player I ever coached." ..."

Happy Birthday Jerry !

"... By this point, Lucas rated as one of the most accurate shooters and top rebounders in league history. He had plenty of individual honors as well. What he sought was a championship opportunity. The Warriors, needing a small scoring forward, dealt Lucas to the New York Knickerbockers, who needed a big man who would work behind both Willis Reed and Dave DeBusschere. Lucas had long rated ahead of both as an NBA player, but easily agreed as New York was a serious championship contender. Early in the 1971-72 season, the injury-prone Reed went down for the season. Lucas, not a starting center since college was pressed into service. Lucas bedeviled opposing teams with outside shooting and deft passing. ..."

The Memory Book
"... Lucas was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 along with Oscar Robertson and Jerry West.

After basketball, Lucas took up a role as an educator and memory expert and has written books and produced television programs on the subject. Two of his best sellers are The Memory Book, co-written with Harry Lorayne, and Remember the Word, for memorizing portions of the Bible. His educational programs on image-based memory development are now being used in some Ohio school systems.

Lucas serves as a long-distance Director of Basketball Operations for Indiana Wesleyan University, according to their 2006-2007 media guide, and helps in the nationwide recruiting effort for the Wildcats. Lucas is active today as a public speaker and in celebrity golf tournaments. ..."

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Michael Jordan !

Michael Jordan
Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963) is a retired American professional basketball player and active businessman. His biography on the National Basketball Association (NBA) website states, "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." Jordan was one of the most effectively marketed athletes of his generation and was instrumental in popularizing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.

"... After a stand-out career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jordan joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as one of the stars of the league, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, illustrated by performing slam dunks from the free throw line at Slam Dunk Contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness." He also gained a reputation as one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat." Though Jordan abruptly retired from basketball at the beginning of the 1993-94 NBA season to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998) as well as an NBA-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995–96 season. Jordan retired for a second time in 1999, but he returned for two more NBA seasons in 2001 as a member of the Washington Wizards. ..."

"... During the Bulls' playoff run in 1993, controversy arose when Jordan was seen gambling in Atlantic City the night before a game against the New York Knicks. In that same year, he admitted to having to cover $57,000 in gambling losses, and author Richard Esquinas wrote a book claiming he had won $1.25 million from Jordan on the golf course.

Happy Birthday Michael !

In 2005, Jordan talked to Ed Bradley of the CBS evening show 60 Minutes about his gambling and admitted that he made some reckless decisions. Jordan stated, "Yeah, I’ve gotten myself into situations where I would not walk away and I’ve pushed the envelope. Is that compulsive? Yeah, it depends on how you look at it. If you’re willing to jeopardize your livelihood and your family, then yeah."
When Bradley asked him if his gambling ever got to the level where it jeopardized his livelihood or family, Jordan replied, "No." ..."

"... On January 19, 2000, Jordan returned to the NBA not as a player, but as part owner and President of Basketball Operations for the Washington Wizards. His responsibilities with the club were to be comprehensive, as he was in charge of all aspects of the team, including personnel decisions. Opinions of Jordan as a basketball executive were mixed. He managed to purge the team of several highly paid, unpopular players (such as forward Juwan Howard and point guard Rod Strickland), but used the first pick in the 2001 NBA Draft to select high schooler Kwame Brown, who did not live up to expectations and was traded away after four seasons. ..."
