Same Knight, Different Channel

Basketball legend Bob Knight is fond of saying that he has never gotten over West Point. In Same Knight, Different Channel, Jack Isenhour takes him at his word. A player on Knight’s first West Point team, Isenhour shows how the controversial coach has changed little from his early days at the academy, temper tantrums and all. Knight made up his mind there to "win-gotta win" and follows that philosophy to this day.

Knight’s sentiment was in step with the core value of "there is no substitute for victory" at West Point, where soldiers were being trained to fight and win the next war.

Basketball Books Review: The Weekly eBA DVICE !

Game

Drew Lawson lives and breathes basketball. He plans to use basketball as his ticket out of Harlem, and everyone knows it. The problems start when Coach "House" Hauser changes the game plan.

The Lawson family is a bit unusual for their neighborhood. Drew is lucky to have both a mom and dad living under the same roof, and although money is a struggle, both parents work. He and his sister have been raised to value life and set high goals. News from their neighborhood only makes the paper when it is bad news. Shootings, stabbings, and robberies are the usual stories, and Drew's mother frets when those stories involve young people.

The Chargers basketball team could offer Drew a chance at a better life. He is a decent player and has his sights set on playing Division I college ball in hopes of being a future NBA player. As a star Chargers' player, it just might be possible. Unfortunately, it seems that Coach House has other plans.

It is mid-season and suddenly Coach House has brought in two new players - a couple of white players. That doesn't bother Drew and his team too much until it becomes evident that Coach plans to start these new players in positions that clearly threaten Drew's game. What is Coach trying to do? Is there a method to his madness or is Drew's future at stake?

GAME is set in Walter Dean Myers' home territory in Harlem, and is filled with his trademark characters and plenty of action. Readers hear Drew's story in between bouts of realistic play-by-play basketball scenes. Myers fans as well as basketball lovers will find this a satisfying read.

Roy Allen Williams (born August 1, 1950) is head coach of the men's basketball team at the University of North Carolina.

After averaging about an 80% win percentage in 15 seasons at the University of Kansas, he became the eighteenth head coach at North Carolina when he replaced Matt Doherty in 2003.

He is second all-time for most wins at Kansas behind Phog Allen and at North Carolina behind his mentor Dean Smith. Additionally, he is third all-time in the NCAA for winning percentage.

Williams has taken his teams to seven Final Fours in his careers at Kansas and North Carolina (fourth all-time in NCAA history).

Williams has also won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament for 20 consecutive years (all-time record) and has led his teams at Kansas and North Carolina to 20 consecutive NCAA Tournaments (second all-time).....

Wages of Wins: Algorithm Explanation
By David Berri, Martin Schmidt, and Stacey Brook

The Wages of Wins: Taking Measure of the Many Myths in Modern Sport, is a book written by three economists —David Berri, Martin Schmidt, and Stacey Brook— who have come up with an algorithm for assessing the value of professional basketball players, using econometric methods to objectively valuate basketball statistics in terms of their impact on winning games. The basic theory of the authors is that measurements of a player's efficiency are better tools for evaluating players than statistics like "points per game." Since teams have an equal number of possessions in a basketball contest, the team that efficiently uses those possessions is more likely to win. Turning the ball over without scoring is "bad," while converting a possession into points is "good." The authors regressed nine statistics to find their relative impact on wins. Here's a simplification of their findings.

"Good" statistics: Each point, rebound, and steal have relatively equal impacts on winning. They are about twice as important as each block and assist. So, to quantify the positive statistics, here's a simple formula: points + rebounds + steals + 1/2 (blocks) + 1/2 (assists)

"Bad" statistics: field goal attempts and turnovers have equally negative impacts on winning. They are twice as bad as free throw attempts and personal fouls. Here's a simple formula for the "bad" stats: field goal attempts + 1/2 (free throw attempts) + turnovers + 1/2 (personal fouls)

Putting this all together we get what the authors call a "Win Score":

Points + Rebounds + Steals + 1/2 (blocks) + 1/2 (assists) - field goal attempts - 1/2 (free throw attempts) - turnovers - 1/2 (personal fouls)

Win Score proves to be an excellent method of comparing players who play the same position. But since power forwards and centers tend to have higher average Win Scores than guards, adjustments need to be made when comparing little men to big men.

Basketball Book Review:

Leading with the Heart
By Mike Krzyzewski - Coach K

The book has four sections--"Preseason," "Regular Season," "Postseason," and "All-Season"--and each of those has four chapters.

Each chapter begins with three quotes ("Too many rules get in the way of leadership" leads off chapter 1), and ends with bulleted tips summing up the chapter's message. Between the quotes and the bullet points are anecdotes about Duke Basketball games and (occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside Basketball.

What you come away with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great Basketball coach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quin Snyder are probably going to become great Basketball coaches, and how anyone who's currently a coach can become a better coach....

Unforgettable Basketball Legends: Bob Cousy

Robert Joseph "Bob" Cousy (born August 9, 1928 in New York City) is a former American professional basketball player. The 6'1", 175 lbs. Cousy played point guard with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Boston Celtics from 1951 to 1963 and briefly with the Cincinnati Royals in the 1969-70 season. Born to French immigrants, Cousy had a highly successful career with the Celtics, winning six championship rings, being voted into 13 All-Star and 12 All-NBA First and Second Teams and winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 1957. An excellent book was written ( see on the left ) by Bill Reynolds about 'Cousy: His Life and Career'.

Bob Cousy - 1957 NBA MVP

Cousy played point guard with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Boston Celtics from 1951 to 1963 and briefly with the Cincinnati Royals in the 1969–70 season.

Cousy first demonstrated his basketball abilities while playing for his high school varsity team in his junior year. He obtained a scholarship to the College of the Holy Cross, where he led the Crusaders to berths in the 1948 and 1950 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament and was named an NCAA All-American for three seasons.

Cousy was initially drafted as the third overall pick in the first round of the 1950 NBA Draft by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, but after he refused to report with the Blackhawks, he was picked up by the Boston Celtics.

Cousy had a highly successful career with the Celtics, winning six championship rings, being voted into 13 All-Star and 12 All-NBA First and Second Teams and winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 1957.

In his first 11 seasons in the NBA, Cousy led the league in assists eight consecutive times and introduced a new blend of ball-handling and passing skills, earning him the nicknames "The Cooz," "Houdini of the Hardwood", and—as he was regularly introduced at Boston Garden—"Mr. Basketball."

After his player career, he coached the Royals for several years, and even made a short comeback for the Royals at age 41. Afterwards, he became a broadcaster for Celtics games. He was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971, and in his honor, the Celtics retired his number 14 jersey and hung it into the rafters of the Boston Garden, where it has remained since.

Cousy was named to the NBA 25th Anniversary Team in 1971, the NBA 35th Anniversary Team in 1981, and the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996, making him one of only four players that were selected to each of those teams.
