eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Statistical Regression

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology
Given a pair of related measures ( X and Y ) on each of a set of items, the term "regression" is used to characterize the manner in which one of the measures (for example the Y measures) change as the other measure ( in this case, the X measure) changes.

For any set of related measures, it is possible to specify a line that approximates the mean of the Y measures for those items with a given X measure.

By revealing how the mean of the Y measures change as the various X measures change, this line is understood to describe the regression of Y on X.

Regression

It is noteworthy that for the same set of related measures there is always a second regression line that describes the regression of X on Y.

Pat Summitt and Coachtube

The regression line is the predicted value of Y for each value of X.

A player should not be charged for a shot from the field influenced by the illegal actions of himself or herself, or any teammates or opponents unless the shot results in a FGM.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

In all cases, no turnover is charged !

• In (a) the horn is ignored. Charge A1 with a FGA and, if the shot is good, credit A1 with a FGM;

• in (b), (c) and (d) the officials call the violation and Team B is awarded the ball for a throwin. Charge A1 with a FGA and credit Team B with a dead-ball rebound;

• in (e) the officials do not call a violation and Team B continues control of the ball. Charge A1 with a FGA and credit B3 with a disputed rebound.

About Free Throws Line Up - Rules Differences & Statistics Tracking
& the Basketball Training Video in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Free Throws Line Up - Rules Differences & Statistics Tracking

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
At NF - National Federation (U.S. High School):
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- as many as 8 players can be on the lane (4 each side), and you could have 5 from one team, as any vacant spot can be filled by an opponent.

At NCAA, NBA, FIBA:
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- only a maximum of 5 players may be on the lane: 3 opponents of the shooter and 2 teammates.

At NBA:
c- the lowest 4 spots MUST be filled on the final throw.

At FIBA:
c- any of the spots may be empty, but must remain empty if the team entitled to them does not fill it.

At NF, NCAA, FIBA:
d- players not in marked lane spots, must remain outside the 3 point arc and behind the free throw line extended until the ball strikes the ring.

At NBA:
d- this part of the rule is somewhat more liberal.

Basketball fans have made an artwork out of distracting the players at free throws time !

Free throws are an organised process, for the statistician too. Let us see something about the basketball statistics tracking in this case. Really, is the shoot we have all the time to record data. The shooter takes his place behind the free throw line (4.5 metres or 15 feet from the basket). All other players must stand in their correct places until the ball leaves the shooter's hands:

The number of players allowed by the rule - according the introduction - lines up along the sides of the restricted area ( keyhole, paint, lane ). These players are normally the ones that rebound the ball. Three or four line up on one side and two or four on the other. In all the rules, a defensive player always takes the place closest to the basket.

The remaining players, must remain behind the three point line and the free throw line extended (an imaginary line extended from the free throw line in both directions to the sidelines).

Leaving their designated places before the ball leaves the shooter's hands, interfering with the ball, and (for the defensive team only) attempting to put off the shooter, are all violations. In addition, the shooter must release the ball within five seconds (ten in the NBA) and must not step on or over the free throw line until the ball touches the ring.

- A violation by the shooter cancels the free throw and the statistician records a missed free throw and a team rebound for the opponents, in case of last free throw;

- a violation by the defensive team results in a substitute free throw if the shooter missed and no stats tracking in the possessions counting, only at the play-by-play relate - see eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System;

- a violation by the offensive team or a shot that completely misses the ring and backboard results in the loss of possession to the defensive team ( only if it is on the last free throw ), the statistician records a missed last free-throw and a defensive team rebound on FT for the defensive team.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Analogy

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology
Analogy is either the cognitive process of transferring information from a particular subject (the analogue or source) to another particular subject (the target), or a linguistic expression corresponding to such a process.

In a narrower sense, analogy is an inference or an argument from a particular to another particular, as opposed to deduction, induction, and abduction, where at least one of the premises or the conclusion is general.

The word analogy can also refer to the relation between the source and the target themselves, which is often, though not necessarily, a similarity, as in the biological notion of analogy.

analogy
A simple analogy explaining magnetic mirrors: a marble in a bowl.
The highest the marble can reach as it rolls around in the bowlis the blue line.

In mathematics and statistics, some types of analogies can have a precise mathematical formulation through the concept of isomorphism.

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics: Who owns the basketball team statistical data?

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Who owns the basketball team statistical data?

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
When the statistician ends his work and send the game analysis report: is the statistician owed a right to use the data for publication purposes ?

First of all, at the early stages of the season, and in order to eliminate doubt from the beginning of the statistical employment, a document of agreement between the basketball team's manager and the statistician certainly would make clear and more comprehensible each party's respective obligatory preconditions and rights.

If the agreement involves a total permission, we´ll have no any problems.

Now, when the statistician works for a basketball team, data ownership clearly belongs to them.

Professional Basketball Player Performance Trends
Image: eBA System

If it was agreed at the pre-season and contractually that the basketball team owns the data, and the statistician is partially allowed to use the data for publication purposes, obviously there is an obligation to hide the basketball team's and institution's identities to protect their rights to anonymity in accordance with this right of limited use.

In any case, the head coach and the manager should be informed of such intended use of data and supplied with a copy of the final written research.

Weekly Video Clippings:
Miroslav Klose Reaches Fair Play Summit

Miroslav Klose Reaches Fair Play Summit

The legend of Miroslav Klose grew by leaps and bounds Wednesday. The Lazio striker used his hand to score a goal, then spectacularly convinced the referee to disallow it.

The sport of soccer is better off because of it. Klose's heroics came in the pressure cooker that is Italy's Serie A. In the fifth minute of visiting Lazio's game against Napoli, Klose redirected a corner kick into the goal with his hand. In fact, he might have been trying to move his hand out of the way when the ball struck it.

Napoli players protested furiously, while some Lazio players celebrated. What happened next will cement his good name around the world. In the mystical spirit of fair play, Klose spoke to the referee and convinced him to disallow the goal.

It earned him the respect of players on both sides (as if he didn't already have it) and he was rightfully applauded by fans at Napoli's San Paulo Stadium. Klose, 34, has bagged so many goals for club and country, he probably didn't want any cheap ones on his resume.

His glittering international career includes 64 goals for Germany, including the 14 he's scored at three FIFA World Cups -- good for second-most all time. The German marksman has also scored more than 185 goals for four clubs in two countries.

Unfortunately, that would be the high point of Lazio's game, as Klose's team suffered a 3-0 drubbing.

Basketball Statistics Questions: Throw-in Crossing the Plane & Video Case Study

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
Throw-in Crossing the Plane Statistical Tracking

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
... Some question about throws-in rule and statistical registration:

A1 is awarded a throw-in. While holding the ball, A1's hands crosses the plane of the boundary line so that the ball is above the in-bounds area. B2 catches the ball that is in A1's hands or taps the ball out of A1's hands.

How we rule this situation and register the statistics according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book ? ...

Commentary About the Rule=
Before a thrower-in has released the ball on a throw-in, it is possible that the throwing-in motion could cause that player's hand(s) with the ball to break the plane of the boundary line separating the in-bounds area from the out-of-bounds area. In such situations, it continues to be the responsibility of the defending player to avoid interfering with the throw-in by contacting the ball while it is still in the hands of the thrower-in.

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
B2 has interfered with the throw-in, thereby delaying the resuming of the game. A warning shall be given to B2 and communicated to coach B and this warning shall apply to all team B players for the remainder of the game. The repetition of a similar action by any team B player may result in a technical foul.
In the described case in the question, no statistical registration is made, but if it was called a technical foul, a UNFORCED TURNOVER is charged against the offender player in the category "TF".

In this Photograph by Mark Dolejs from USA TODAY Sports presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .
Photograph: by Mark Dolejs from USA TODAY Sports

About the Video Analysis=
One commentary about the rules to resume this topic: the defense may not break the plane of the line, if so they will receive a warning and then a technical foul. If the defense breaks the plane and touches the ball or the player BEFORE THE BALL IS RELEASED across the plane the penalty is a technical foul. When we analyze a basketball game we must have the video analysis help to decide the responsibility of each one of the player in this situation.

All the terms in this answer are explained widely at The eBA Basketball System Book and in eBA Clinic ONLINE.

This topic is resumed in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Encyclopedia
at the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book

Video Case Study:
Basketball 3-pointer annulled because 24 seconds

"... Legal 3-pointer annulled: this is the 1998 NBA Finals Game Six - Chicago Bulls 87 Utah Jazz 86. Here you have two cases of shooting over the end of the 24 seconds: in the second case of the clip there is no problem of register. But in the first I have doubts: the basket was annulled but the replay shows that the shooting was legal: what's the register of this play ? We penalize the player with a missed field goal ?

How the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register this play ? ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Basketball Personal Fouls eBA Analysis ~ Concept & Statistics

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
"... With the exception of the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, why fouls are generally not even considered in evaluating and efficiency formulas by the other statistical systems ? ... "

There is a common misconception in the other basketball statistics analysis systems, specially at the live-game statistics, and personal fouls are generally not even considered when evaluating a player's talent.

This error or "statistics myth" raised because the false concept that it is assumed everyone commits those personal fouls and they are unavoidable.

Even, a foul means a defender has been caught out of position and has damaged his team by adding to a number that could eventually lead to free possessions via the Bonus.

Personal Fouls eBA Analysis
Photograph: Chronicle ON Line

But the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System have a rating of personal foul made and received and qualify each one as "good", "neutral" or "bad": the rating is explained in eBA Clinics Online and discussed in the "Statistics & Statisticians Board" in the forum, which is reserved for registered members.

Something like when 2 free throws are missed the foul actually becomes a positive for the fouling team much like a steal. If only one free throw is made it becomes a tie, nothing lost or gained. When 2 out of 3 free throws are made on the average the free throws become a negative for the fouling team.

The situation in which the personal foul was committed, plays an important role in this personal fouls eBA
analysis

About the Applicability of a Statistical System for High School Basketball
& the Basketball Training Video in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Applicability of a Statistical System for High School Basketball

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
In our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Clinics, the participants always ask about the applicability of our statistical system for high school basketball.

It is inevitable: last years high school students get scouters attention ! We read in one of our articles in the Scouting section an appeal to the high school students "to be sure to enjoy their High School Basketball experience, and sell-out for the team !

Some student/athletes over-emphasize the recruiting process and end up under-achieving because of the excessive pressure they put on themselves to impress recruiters, an over-emphasis upon statistics, or saving themselves for college. Work hard, hustle, and play your game to help your team!"

It is clear, from the name of our system and the site, that we are working for "basketball professional teams". I don't think that a complete statistical system must be applied in the High School, but about the fact that the high school coach must keep basics statistics we have no any doubt, specially on the last years.

....work with your players on basketball fundamentals !

And its use and results must be emphasized in the coaching program: that's mean, the use of the stats to help the player to improve himself in the rights areas and to assist the coach in the programming of his trainings more accurately.

Perhaps the clinics participants intended to ask if all this set of complex formulas of analysis are necessary at high school.... Please hear to this old basketball coach and statistician analyst: all the time you can.... work with your players on basketball fundamentals !

The future NBA Coach of your actual players will give, however secretly, the credit to You....!
