FIBA AméricasFIBA Américas

The International Basketball Federation in America (FIBA Americas), with headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico, announced today the new competition format for the 2008/2009 Edition of the FIBA Americas League.

With the national and international competition schedules as the main reason for this new change, the 2008/09 FIBA Americas League shall be held under a new game system.

On this Second Edition, and as the First one, 16 (sixteen) teams will be participating, starting the second week of December 2008 through the first week of February 2009.

Two “four-team series” will be played in both the South and North regions of the Americas, with two of them scheduled for December 2008, and the other two for January 2009.

The winners of each “four-team series” will qualify for the “Final Four”, which is scheduled for February 2009.

As with the first Edition, every game will be broadcasted by FOX Sports for the whole continent. The bidding process for those teams interested in hosting one of those “four-team series” has already begun.

The countries that have already confirmed their representation at the FIBA AMERICAS LEAUE 2008/09 are: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay for South America. For Central America and the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic.

The FIBA Americas League is the most important Clubs’ competition in the Americas. Sixteen teams were active in the first edition, with Mar del Plata Peñarol (from Argentina) crowned as the 2007/08 Champions.

Basketball News:
F.C. Barcelona officially confirmed that Daniel Santiago

Daniel Santiago
F.C. Barcelona officially confirmed that Daniel Santiago will reinforce the team in season 2008-09. Santiago, who spent the last three seasons in Unicaja Malaga, will fill in the gap that Mario Kasun left in Barcelona's roster this summer.

Santiago averaged 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game in ACB while he stayed in Malaga.

Daniel Santiago successfully passed the usual medical tests after joining team practices and will be the last element incorporated to the team just before the start of the Spanish league, ACB, against the DRV Joventut at the Palau Blaugrana, last Sunday.

After playing in the NCAA of the United States, Santiago played in Puerto Rico before crossing the Atlantic to play at the Italian league with basketball club Varese, who won the championship of the 1999 season. In the 2000-01 Santiago signed with the Phoenix Suns, where he saw little action and ended playing with the Vaqueros de Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

In the 2002-03 seasons, Santiago returned to Italy to play for the Lottomatica of Roma and later returned to the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks. He has won Bronze at the Pan-American Games in 1999, 2001, and 2003 with the National Basketball Team of Puerto Rico and in 2006-07 he as named the best center of the Euro league.

Basketball News: Andres Nocioni Proud about his country, Argentina

The Argentinean forward Andrés Nocioni has a solid career in the NBA playing for the Chicago Bulls, yet he feels honored for being able to play for his country, Argentina, at international tournaments.

He said in an interview that he still felt the high of winning the Bronze at the Olympic Games even though he was injured and Manu Ginobili was not able to play at their final game due to an injured foot.

Several days after obtaining the third place at the Olympic Games, where the United States captured the Gold and Spain the Silver, FIBA announced their new world ranking where it was revealed that Argentina was position at the first place in the world.

“I feel a lot of pride for being part of the team that help my country reach the first place in World Basketball in the eyes of FIBA, even more so because we are not a traditionally basketball country." Nocioni said.

FIBA rewarded Argentina for their consistency at international tournaments, having obtained second place at the 2006 World Championship in Japan, Olympic Gold at the 2004 Games in Athens and now the bronze in the last edition of the Olympic Games at Beijing.

Nocioni added "One thing is for sure: I have not played my last game with my National Basketball Team."

One-on-one: Rudy Fernandez in America

"On Sunday, I'll travel to America to begin my career with the Portland Trail Blazers.
I played in my second Olympics at the Beijing Games with the Spanish and had very good displays in several contests, including a narrow title-game defeat to the United States...
I am prepared to go up against the best players in the world at club level, too." Rudy Fernandez said.

"This is a unique experience that I wanted to live,".

"Whether it goes well or not, I will have at least had the chance to experience it. To return early would not be a failure. I am prepared for that challenge." Fernandez said.

"The coach has a lot of confidence in me and wants me to be an important member in the team,".

"My aim is to play minutes."

"My mother will accompany me on my trip to America and live with me for the first two years." Rudy concluded.

Fernandez averaged 13.1 points per game in Beijing, although in Spain's toughest clashes he was far more influential.

In an overtime win over China, Fernandez had 21 points and in the semi-final against Lithuania, he poured in 18.

In the gold-medal showdown with Team USA, Fernandez made five three-pointers and finished with 22 points.

Basketball News: The rules for the FIBA 33

FIBA International Ranking
The National Basketball Federation of Panama (FEPABA) has announced that they are considering establishing a tournament in the capital city of that country based on the rules for the FIBA 33 just before the current year ends.

The tournament will make use of the new rules set out by FIBA for a variation of the game which consists on playing in a half court with just four players (3 players and one substitute), a referee and a couch per team. A game for this rules, will be completed in three sets of five minutes in which the teams will try to reach the goal of 33. Whoever ends up with the most wins. The game will also have three game officials at the desk and a shot clock set at 14 seconds.

This variation on the game has been approved by FIBA and it will be proposed for world class competitions and will have its debut at the first Summer Youth Olympic Game, at Singapore in 2010. 20 National Teams, both men and women, will be playing at that tournament.

If approved, FEPABA foresees that the tournament will take place this very same year anywhere from October to November. The tournament will hold games for both Men and Women divisions and will try to have representation from every corner of the Federal District and will try to move on to the national level by the summer of 2009.

Basketball News: Last Comments from Mexico and Puerto

The LNBP goes live at Mexico

After a five month break, last Wednesday was the kick off for the National Professional League of Mexico (LNBP) with three new teams for this season: Loros de Colima, Potros ITSON and Estrellas Indebasquet.

Los Loros have veteran player, center Juan Valenzuela, and prized US import players, Leroy Davis, who played at Georgia Tech, Marlo Dumont, who saw action with TCU and Byron Burnett, of the Florida International University.

Meanwhile, Potros signed Cedric Patton, who had a solid season with the Caballeros de Culiacán and also signed Joe Chapman, graduate from Marquette University with an outstanding stint in the Czech Republic's Professional basketball league, averaging 13.1 points per game.

Moreover, Estrellas de Indebasquet home town will be Mexico City, a town without a professional team since the 2005 season. The boast several local veteran players such as Rafael Sandoval and Alfonso Lopez.

José Juan Barea, the MVP

As expected, the NBA's Dallas Mavericks point guard, José Juan Barea, became the most valuable player of the 2008 edition of the Centrobasket Championship, closing the event with 111 points, 12 rebounds, and 32 assists.

“It feels very nice to have won this trophy, but it falls short to winning the championship along with your country's teammates, which was the goal and happily we were able to make it happen. We had a great rival with the US Virgin Islands, who played very well; we also fell under the heavy hand of fatigue but to our fortune, our bench was able to come on the court and give us the help we needed to finish the championship. This and the fact that everyone was effective were the key factors for our triumph”, explained Barea at a press conference.

Puerto Rico head coach, Manuel Cintrón, praised his players for their competence. “They all deserve praise for their commitment at every game, it was not easy to play these tournaments as they are very physically demanding to any team. They all did good.”, said Cintrón.

One-on-one: "We walked this far" with Yao Ming

"I am disappointed that China lost to Lithuania and missed out on the semi-finals at the Beijing Games but also I believe that the national team had played better basketball than ever before." Yao Ming said.

"I am glad, although I have regrets. Lithuania pressured us into making missing a lot of shots. Lithuania played very well. We didn't play well."

"It's unfortunate that we didn't make it to the semi-finals. We had not made it that far and reached the aim of breaking China record."

Yao Ming, Chinese Player at the Olympics Games 2008

"We were determined to fight, I think that through our courage, we walked this far but we were limited by our capabilities."

"I was the flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony and did have some good moments in all of the games, including wins over Angola and Germany."

"I totally enjoyed the Olympic experience," he said. "I have been able to compete with great players and teams."

"At least we have closed the gap a little bit, we have lifted our competence." Yao concluded.

One-on-one: A Dream Realized with Jorge Garbajosa:

Jorge Garbajosa, Spanish Player at the Olympics Games 2008
"My role in the Spanish team in these Olympics Games at Beijing has changed and I accept it with all the humility and sobriety. I have to do the best I can when I am on the court. If I play 40 minutes I will give everything I have just as if I play one minute."

"The Olympics is something very special for any athlete in the world, regardless of the sport you play in. Imagine when you have not been able to play for many months. For me to be here is a dream realized. It was one of my aims. I have worked very hard. Without the support from the Spanish Basketball Federation, from my team-mates and from my new club (BC Khimki in Russia), I wouldn't have made it."

"Everybody in the Spanish team knew it was going to be hard work. We are having problems with certain types of defenses. The important thing is that we learn and get better game by game against very difficult opponents.
We have proved that we have a lot of confidence in ourselves and in our potential, but we respect all of our opponents."

"The game against Team USA is a game we are looking forward to playing just as any of the other games we have played. It's a beautiful contest because you are playing at the Olympics against a team made up of professional NBA players. But it's worth just two points as the rest of the games. We are enthusiastic about this game just we were enthusiastic about our previous games and about our future games", Jorge said after today’s 72-59 win over Germany.
