Kobe Bryant is not as Good as Michael Jordan -- So What?
by David Friedman ~ in our Weekly Press & Video Clippings

Press Clippings:
Kobe Bryant is not as Good as Michael Jordan--So What?
By David Friedman

Basketball Statistician's Friday Press Clippings
From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Kobe Bryant is not as Good as Michael Jordan
So What? ' by David Friedman

"... Kobe Bryant scored 26 points during the Lakers' 100-94 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday December 14 to move past Michael Jordan into third place on pro basketball's career scoring list.

One might think that this accomplishment would be an occasion to reflect upon Bryant's consistency and longevity but while some observers have taken that approach many commentators go to great lengths--either via anecdotes or via statistics--to "prove" that Jordan is not just better than Bryant but that Jordan is much better.

The very fact that the comparison is often made--even if it is just done to belittle Bryant--says a lot. ..."

"... The way that some people compare Jordan and Bryant is interesting. The best case for Jordan versus Bryant would focus on Jordan's efficiency and Jordan's performances during his 6-0 run in NBA Finals (Bryant has one more Finals appearance than Jordan but also two more Finals losses).

Of course, field goal percentages in general were higher during Jordan's era, the rules and style of play were much different and Jordan's overall numbers benefited from him playing college ball before immediately becoming an NBA starter while Bryant jumped straight to the NBA from high school and thus needed some on the job training as a bench player. ..."

"... While some media members and fans may not understand or appreciate the rough edges of Bryant's personality, Kevin Durant, the 2014 NBA MVP, respects Bryant's approach and refutes the idea that good players do not want to play with Bryant:

Excuse my language, but that's (expletive). I want to play with a winner every single night, especially somebody who wants to win that bad, who works that hard, who demands a lot, who raises up your level.

I'd want to play with a guy like that every day...(His style) may make people uncomfortable, how he acts and just how he approaches the game, but I love that type of stuff. I think (the accusation) is BS. ..."

Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls talks to Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers about leadership and potential to succeed in the game of basketball In this Photograph from Flickr presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .

"... Once one moves past comparing Bryant to Jordan and once one understands that any player with the right mindset would welcome the challenge and opportunity of playing with Bryant, one can focus on just how remarkable Bryant's current season is.

Forget for a moment his career-low field goal percentage and consider the fact that Bryant is a highly productive player in his 19th NBA season. Only three players in NBA history have even made it past their 19th season: ......"

"... In contrast, during the 2014-15 season Bryant is logging heavy minutes (35.4 mpg), his floor game is still excellent (5.1 rpg, 4.9 apg and 1.4 spg, numbers that are comparable to his career averages of 5.3 rpg, 4.8 apg and 1.4 spg) and he is scoring 24.6 ppg.

Bryant's field goal percentage (.372) is not good but he is remarkably productive and durable for a 19 year veteran who is coming off of two serious leg injuries. Bryant is in excellent shape and if his body holds up his field goal percentage will probably improve during the course of this season as he regains his game legs after being out of action for such an extended period.
..."

"... No, Kobe Bryant is not quite as good as Michael Jordan and, no, Kobe Bryant is no longer as efficient or dominant as he was during his prime--or even during his last healthy full season, when he was a legitimate MVP-caliber player averaging 25.5 ppg on .463 field goal shooting (including a career-high .510 from two point range) as a 17 year NBA veteran--but Bryant is the closest thing to Jordan that we have seen or are likely to see anytime soon. Bryant's former dominance and his remarkable, ongoing longevity should be celebrated. ..." Read more ...

About the Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out & Basketball Training Video
in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
How to make a statistical calculation of the player's missed playing time ascribable to fouls ?
Is there in the the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System some data about the player utilization and substitution set of rules in the foul trouble case ? That means to say, when they are sent to the bench and after which foul number ?

To calculate missed playing time ascribable to fouls, we must base our analysis in the following assumptions about player usage and substitution patterns:

In FIBA & NBA:
No change when a player commits his first foul.
Committing his second a player foul would be replaced and have to wait at the bench until the half of the second quarter.
A player committing his third foul would be replaced and would be a bench player until the third quarter.
With the critical (in FIBA) fourth foul committed a player would be replaced and have to sit until the beginning of the the fourth quarter.
In NBA:
A player committing his fifth foul would have to be out of the game until the half of the fourth quarter.

Sarunas Jasikevicius (R) and Robertas Javtokas of Lithuania sit on the substitution bench during their friendly basketball game against Turkey as part of their training for the Beijing Olympics, at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel in Macau August 2, 2008
Photograph: Day Life

Now, how often do players foul out of a game ? When the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul happens ? Which percentage of the players with the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul are fouled out ?

- 49% of the 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA come with about 3 minutes left in the game: remember to consider, 40 minutes in FIBA and 48 in the NBA !
- 82% of all players who perpetrate a 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA do not foul out.

This is reasonable from the moment the studies from eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System demonstrates that even the most players having a tendency to foul lose only a few minutes per game because of their foul trouble. But they play the great majority of their minutes near the danger of fouling out.

The analysis of the different types of Foul Trouble, were studied in the eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking Clinic.

"... Here’s the thing that makes life so interesting. The theory of evolution claims that only the strong shall survive.

Maybe so…maybe so…

But the theory of competition says just because their the strong doesn’t mean they cant get their ass’s kicked. Thats right.

See what every long shot, come from behind underdog will tell you is this. The other guy may in fact be the favorite, the odds maybe stacked against you, fair enough. But what the odds don’t know is this isn’t a math test.

This is a completely different kind of test. One where PASSION has a funny way of trumping logic. So before you step up to the starting line, before the whistle blows, and the clock starts ticking. Just remember out here the results don’t always add up.

No matter what the stats may say, and the experts may think, and the commentators may have predicted, when the race is on all bets are off.
Don’t be surprised if someone decides to flip the script and take a pass on yelling uncle.

And then suddenly as the old saying goes, WE GOT OURSELVES A GAME! ..."

About the Basketball Second Chance Points & Basketball Training Video

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Second Chance Points

About Statistics & Statisticians... and Coaches that
As you surely noticed, the graduates at the concluded eBA CLINICS ONLINE rewrite, correct, enhance and update every thread at our Basketball Statistics Forums, as part of their practical work. Now we are merging all the unitary messages and similar ones in a common thread ( thus reducing the number of topics ): and the threads are categorized according to the eBA Basketball Analysis System contents, which is a more practical approach to the search at the Basketball Statistics Study Forums.

"....When a team shoots a high percentage from the floor, the number of second chance opportunities will distinctly be smaller, but the efficiency of the second chance possession is not a function of the number of second chance opportunities in a game.

Consequently, if teams have higher efficiency during second chances than first chances, a team's game efficiency, taking all the different aspects into account, is nearly always increased only because the offensive rebounding. By contrast, since that relationship appears alternating, the important objective of collecting and evaluating data is in the bonus possessions produced by the net offensive rebounding differential.

... Pao Gasol shoots in a second chance opportunity ...
Photograph: SILive.com

A well balanced team would be more effective on second chance points than on first chance points because, on most first chance possessions, the defense is accomplished and the offensive team must attack the set defense to find their scoring opportunities.

In whatever manner, with possessions that go on with an offensive rebound, the defense is often lacking order at the instant of the rebound, and these possessions often end with either a foul [the most effective method of scoring] or a tap-in or other relatively easy shot.

Only when the offensive team decides to withdraw the ball back out following an offensive rebound and run its half court offense would the defense have an opportunity to reset itself.

Concisely, to resume this post, teams obtain more easy scores in second chance possessions than in first chance possessions, so they must be registered and analyzed as it was explained and is included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System. ...." Make THE Difference ... !
by Matt Devine

Make THE Difference ... !

TMB Bank have launched a new brand vision "Make THE Difference" by making a film to inspire people to start thinking differently. With a hope that they will start to Make THE Difference to their own world. It doesn't have to be big, but a little can create positive changes.

This film is based on a true story. In 1986 a football team that lived on a little island in the south of Thailand called "Koh Panyee". It's a floating village in the middle of the sea that has not an inch of soil. The kids here loved to watch football but had nowhere to play or practice. But they didn't let that stop them. They challenged the norm and have become a great inspiration for new generations on the island.

After thrilling fans all over the continent with his skill and daring throughout the most competitive season in the history of European basketball, Sergio Llull of Real Madrid was rewarded on Saturday for his virtuoso accomplishments by being named the MVP of the 2016-17 EuroLeague. Llull learned of the MVP honor at the end of the Euroleague Awards Ceremony to highlight a gala evening at the opulent Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, on the next-to-last night of the 2017 Final Four. The trophy for the top performer of the season was presented to Llull by new Euroleague Basketball Legend Mirsad Turkcan.

Llull's fellow members of the previously announced All-EuroLeague First Team – Bogdan Bogdanovic and Ekpe Udoh of Fenerbahce Istanbul, Georgios Printezis of Olympiacos Piraeus, and last season's MVP, Nando De Colo of CSKA Moscow – were also honored at the event. So was the 2016-17 All-EuroLeague Second Team – Brad Wanamaker of Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul, Milos Teodosic of CSKA, Nicolo Melli of Brose Bamberg, Gustavo Ayon of Real Madrid and Bryant Dunston of Anadolu Efes Istanbul – as were the winners of the Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy, Keith Langford of Unics Kazan; the Rising Star Trophy, Luka Doncic of Real Madrid; and the Best Defender Trophy, Adam Hanga of Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz, who was unable to attend due to his professional commitments.

Llull received more votes than any other player during the MVP selection process, which was open to both fans and media. In his 10th season with Madrid, Llull posted career-best EuroLeague averages with 16.4 points, 5.9 assists, 2.2 three-pointers made and 16.8 performance index rating over 32 games while leading his team to the Final Four. His unbelievable knack for hitting buzzer-beaters from all distances and angles made him as dangerous and decisive as any player in the league, while his non-stop commitment at both ends of the court went a long way to assuring Madrid the best record, 23-7, in the longest regular season in competition history.

Llull, a EuroLeague champion with Madrid in 2015, will play in Sunday's third-place game at the Final Four after his 28 points in a loss Friday to Fenerbahce Istanbul matched the most in a semifinal at the event this century.

At 29 years old, Llull is the undisputed leader of Madrid and the motor of its offense. He ranked third in the EuroLeague this season in assists, fifth in scoring and eighth in performance index rating. When the stakes were raised, the Madrid playmaker boosted his number to 18.5 points and a 17.8 index rating in four playoff games against Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul. Llull started in every game this season and led Madrid in minutes played (27:44 per game) and a total of 70 three-point shots made, another personal best and the fourth-most in the competition. Llull was named MVP of November, a month during which he averaged 21.4 points per game. He also earned MVP honors for Rounds 7 and 27. Llull made his debut on the All-EuroLeague First Team after having previously been voted to the second team in 2010.

Llull started the competition on fire, scoring 22 points against Olympiacos and getting a double-double of 14 points and 11 assists in a road win against Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv. Soon after that, Llull broke his personal EuroLeague scoring record by dropping 30 points in a narrow home win against Panathinaikos Athens. Llull continued leading Madrid, scoring 20 points in a road triumph against FC Barcelona Lassa and hitting three consecutive bombs from way downtown to help Madrid down CSKA Moscow 95-85, a win that would eventually allow Madrid to finish first at the end of the regular season. Not only did he have 26 points in an 89-91 road win against Brose Bamberg, but Llull hit an unbelievable game-winning floater to win that game. Fans had come to expect such heroics from Llull, though. Several of his many three-pointers during were made with the shot clock or game clock about to expire, each one seemingly more impossible than the last – but they all fell through the net to the amazement of the crowds.

"First of all I have to say that it is an honor for me to receive this award," Llull said on the stage immediately after accepting the trophy. "I want to congratulate all players here tonight. I think they all could have won it. I also want to thank the fans and media for voting for me. Last but not least, I want to thank my teammates and coaches who work with me all year, because without them it would have been impossible to win this award. Thank you."

Llull becomes the 12th different player to win the MVP award since the current end-of-season awards format was introduced in 2005. He is the third Spanish-born MVP, after Juan Carlos Navarro collected the award in 2009 and Llull's former teammate Sergio Rodriguez won it with Madrid in 2014. Llull started his career in La Salle in his hometown Mahon and played for Basquet Manresa before joining Real Madrid in 2007. In addition to his EuroLeague title in 2015, Llull has helped Madrid win four Spanish League and five Copa del Rey titles, in addition to the Intercontinental Cup title in 2015. Llull has also been very successful with the Spanish national team with which he has won three EuroBasket gold medals and one bronze, as well as two Olympic medals, silver in 2012 and bronze in 2016. He celebrated 10 years since signing with Madrid a few days ago and now Llull can mark the anniversary as the season's most valuable player, adding his name to the EuroLeague history books in golden letters!
