eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Statistical Regression

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology
Given a pair of related measures ( X and Y ) on each of a set of items, the term "regression" is used to characterize the manner in which one of the measures (for example the Y measures) change as the other measure ( in this case, the X measure) changes.

For any set of related measures, it is possible to specify a line that approximates the mean of the Y measures for those items with a given X measure.

By revealing how the mean of the Y measures change as the various X measures change, this line is understood to describe the regression of Y on X.

Regression

It is noteworthy that for the same set of related measures there is always a second regression line that describes the regression of X on Y.

Pat Summitt and Coachtube

The regression line is the predicted value of Y for each value of X.

Coaching Womens Basketball by Pat Summitt

Coaching Womens Basketball by Pat Summitt
Basketball Training Course!

About this Course
Using on-the-court player demonstrations, Coach Pat Summitt shares the drills, philosophy, and techniques she has used in leading her teams to annually contend for the national title. Building a Championship Defense covers everything from person-to-person drills, and team defense to defending the low post and back screens to inbound denial. Coach Summitt also details the teaching responsibilities for each defensive position.

About Pat Summitt
Coach Pat Summitt is the former University of Tennessee head women's college basketball coach. During the course of her career coaching the Lady Vols from 1974 to 2012 she managed to lead the team to win eight NCAA championships. She holds the record for the most all-time wins for a coach in NCAA basketball history of either a men's or women's team in any division. Coach Summitt was the first NCAA coach, and one of four college coaches overall, to achieve 1,000 victories. Coach Summitt was named the Naismith Basketball Coach of the Century in April 2000. In 2009, the Sporting News placed her at number 11 on its list of the 50 Greatest Coaches of All Time in all sports; she was the only woman on the list. In 38 years as a coach, she never had a losing season.

About this Video Example
Coach Pat Summitt won more NCAA basketball games than any other coach in history, and in this video she breaks down the two on one segment of the fast break offense. Coach Summitt explains the coaching points of putting your opponent back on their heels and getting the ball to the basket in a hurry.

infolinks ~ The REAL Review Unpaid by infolinks that infolinks Does Not Want You to Read!

THE eBA STATS GROUP and its 20 WEBSITES ABANDONED infolinks

( Para la Versión en Español: Ver a continuación de la imagen! )

This is a special report for our 141,537 registered members, complementary to our On-Line Newsletter at http://bit.ly/2uyDB41.

Read below the Update No. 4 to 07/08/2018

This is a special report for our 141,537 registered members, complementary to our On-Line Newsletter at http://bit.ly/2uyDB41.

For years we published on our websites ads of #infolinks, advertising providers in different formats. The ads were not high quality nor attractive or related to our pages, but did not bother. Only a few weeks ago they began to publish porno-ads #infolinks of the type "Meet this sweet Asian girl who is waiting for you ...", etc, etc, FULLY INCOMPATIBLE with our pages.

We immediately protest, we demand the withdrawal of those ads without receiving an adequate response. The ads continued to appear until we decided to close the #infolinks porno-ads account in our eBA forums at https://eBAForums.com/. And when we were about to close the access of porno-ads #infolinks in our eBA System Book at http://eBASystem.com/ ... WITHOUT PREVIOUSNESS and UNILATERALLY #infolinks closes our account completely because "our sites are not fit for #infolinks" RETAINING THE MONEY PAYMENTS THAT WE ARE DECEIVED UNTIL THIS TIME!!!

The reasons alluded to by #infolinks to close our account are understandable ... HOW COULD "BE FIT" THE #infolinks PORNO-ADS IN OUR eBA ENCYCLOPEDIA at http://eBAWords.com/ ?

To those members who manage websites: GO AWAY FROM #infolinks! YOU CAN BE STOLEN AS THEY STEALED US!
To those members who see porno-ads and more from #infolinks: DO NOT CLICK IN THOSE PORNO-ADS ... they usually lead to sites that transmit viruses and dangerous malwares!

We will update this announcement until our money is paid to us on Twitter, Facebook, Google PLUS, LinkedIN and our eBA Blogs (NOW WITHOUT THE #infolinks PORNO-ADS!).

YOU ARE WARNED! ... We hear you tell us ... Thanks? ...you're welcome! For these are the friends!

Basketball Tracking Stats Case Studies ~ Basketball Shot Statistics Tracking Case Study

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Basketball Statistics eBA Case Study
About Basketball Shot Statistics Tracking Case Study

" ... As the shot clock is about to expire, A1
shoots and the ball without doubt is in flight before the buzzer.

 • case a) The shot-clock buzzer sounds while the ball is in the air and
the ball strikes the basket ring or enters the basket.
 • case b) The shot-clock buzzer sounds while the ball is in the air, the ball
fails to hit the ring, and A2 rebounds.
 • case c) The shot-clock buzzer sounds while the ball is in the
air, the ball fails to hit the ring, and B3 rebounds at the right wing of the court.
 • case d) The ball fails to hit the ring and the shotclock buzzer sounds as B3 rebounds.
 • case e) The ball hits the ring and the shot-clock buzzer sounds
as B3 rebounds over A4.

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the
eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"

About Basketball Shots

Conclusion:

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
A player should not be charged for a shot from the field influenced by the illegal actions of himself or herself, or any teammates or opponents unless the shot results in a FGM.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

In all cases, no turnover is charged !

• In (a) the horn is ignored. Charge A1 with a FGA and, if the shot is good, credit A1 with a FGM;

• in (b), (c) and (d) the officials call the violation and Team B is awarded the ball for a throwin. Charge A1 with a FGA and credit Team B with a dead-ball rebound;

• in (e) the officials do not call a violation and Team B continues control of the ball. Charge A1 with a FGA and credit B3 with a disputed rebound.

About Free Throws Line Up - Rules Differences & Statistics Tracking
& the Basketball Training Video in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Free Throws Line Up - Rules Differences & Statistics Tracking

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
At NF - National Federation (U.S. High School):
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- as many as 8 players can be on the lane (4 each side), and you could have 5 from one team, as any vacant spot can be filled by an opponent.

At NCAA, NBA, FIBA:
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- only a maximum of 5 players may be on the lane: 3 opponents of the shooter and 2 teammates.

At NBA:
c- the lowest 4 spots MUST be filled on the final throw.

At FIBA:
c- any of the spots may be empty, but must remain empty if the team entitled to them does not fill it.

At NF, NCAA, FIBA:
d- players not in marked lane spots, must remain outside the 3 point arc and behind the free throw line extended until the ball strikes the ring.

At NBA:
d- this part of the rule is somewhat more liberal.

Basketball fans have made an artwork out of distracting the players at free throws time !

Free throws are an organised process, for the statistician too. Let us see something about the basketball statistics tracking in this case. Really, is the shoot we have all the time to record data. The shooter takes his place behind the free throw line (4.5 metres or 15 feet from the basket). All other players must stand in their correct places until the ball leaves the shooter's hands:

The number of players allowed by the rule - according the introduction - lines up along the sides of the restricted area ( keyhole, paint, lane ). These players are normally the ones that rebound the ball. Three or four line up on one side and two or four on the other. In all the rules, a defensive player always takes the place closest to the basket.

The remaining players, must remain behind the three point line and the free throw line extended (an imaginary line extended from the free throw line in both directions to the sidelines).

Leaving their designated places before the ball leaves the shooter's hands, interfering with the ball, and (for the defensive team only) attempting to put off the shooter, are all violations. In addition, the shooter must release the ball within five seconds (ten in the NBA) and must not step on or over the free throw line until the ball touches the ring.

- A violation by the shooter cancels the free throw and the statistician records a missed free throw and a team rebound for the opponents, in case of last free throw;

- a violation by the defensive team results in a substitute free throw if the shooter missed and no stats tracking in the possessions counting, only at the play-by-play relate - see eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System;

- a violation by the offensive team or a shot that completely misses the ring and backboard results in the loss of possession to the defensive team ( only if it is on the last free throw ), the statistician records a missed last free-throw and a defensive team rebound on FT for the defensive team.

A selected excerpt from the discussions at the eBA System about this topic "Basketball Free Throws Shooting".

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Analogy

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology
Analogy is either the cognitive process of transferring information from a particular subject (the analogue or source) to another particular subject (the target), or a linguistic expression corresponding to such a process.

In a narrower sense, analogy is an inference or an argument from a particular to another particular, as opposed to deduction, induction, and abduction, where at least one of the premises or the conclusion is general.

The word analogy can also refer to the relation between the source and the target themselves, which is often, though not necessarily, a similarity, as in the biological notion of analogy.

analogy
A simple analogy explaining magnetic mirrors: a marble in a bowl.
The highest the marble can reach as it rolls around in the bowlis the blue line.

In mathematics and statistics, some types of analogies can have a precise mathematical formulation through the concept of isomorphism.

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics: Who owns the basketball team statistical data?

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Who owns the basketball team statistical data?

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
When the statistician ends his work and send the game analysis report: is the statistician owed a right to use the data for publication purposes ?

First of all, at the early stages of the season, and in order to eliminate doubt from the beginning of the statistical employment, a document of agreement between the basketball team's manager and the statistician certainly would make clear and more comprehensible each party's respective obligatory preconditions and rights.

If the agreement involves a total permission, we´ll have no any problems.

Now, when the statistician works for a basketball team, data ownership clearly belongs to them.

Professional Basketball Player Performance Trends
Image: eBA System

If it was agreed at the pre-season and contractually that the basketball team owns the data, and the statistician is partially allowed to use the data for publication purposes, obviously there is an obligation to hide the basketball team's and institution's identities to protect their rights to anonymity in accordance with this right of limited use.

In any case, the head coach and the manager should be informed of such intended use of data and supplied with a copy of the final written research.

Miroslav Klose Reaches Fair Play Summit

Miroslav Klose Reaches Fair Play Summit

The legend of Miroslav Klose grew by leaps and bounds Wednesday. The Lazio striker used his hand to score a goal, then spectacularly convinced the referee to disallow it.

The sport of soccer is better off because of it. Klose's heroics came in the pressure cooker that is Italy's Serie A. In the fifth minute of visiting Lazio's game against Napoli, Klose redirected a corner kick into the goal with his hand. In fact, he might have been trying to move his hand out of the way when the ball struck it.

Napoli players protested furiously, while some Lazio players celebrated. What happened next will cement his good name around the world. In the mystical spirit of fair play, Klose spoke to the referee and convinced him to disallow the goal.

It earned him the respect of players on both sides (as if he didn't already have it) and he was rightfully applauded by fans at Napoli's San Paulo Stadium. Klose, 34, has bagged so many goals for club and country, he probably didn't want any cheap ones on his resume.

His glittering international career includes 64 goals for Germany, including the 14 he's scored at three FIFA World Cups -- good for second-most all time. The German marksman has also scored more than 185 goals for four clubs in two countries.

Unfortunately, that would be the high point of Lazio's game, as Klose's team suffered a 3-0 drubbing.

Basketball Statistics Questions: Throw-in Crossing the Plane & Video Case Study

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
Throw-in Crossing the Plane Statistical Tracking

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
... Some question about throws-in rule and statistical registration:

A1 is awarded a throw-in. While holding the ball, A1's hands crosses the plane of the boundary line so that the ball is above the in-bounds area. B2 catches the ball that is in A1's hands or taps the ball out of A1's hands.

How we rule this situation and register the statistics according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book ? ...

Commentary About the Rule=
Before a thrower-in has released the ball on a throw-in, it is possible that the throwing-in motion could cause that player's hand(s) with the ball to break the plane of the boundary line separating the in-bounds area from the out-of-bounds area. In such situations, it continues to be the responsibility of the defending player to avoid interfering with the throw-in by contacting the ball while it is still in the hands of the thrower-in.

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
B2 has interfered with the throw-in, thereby delaying the resuming of the game. A warning shall be given to B2 and communicated to coach B and this warning shall apply to all team B players for the remainder of the game. The repetition of a similar action by any team B player may result in a technical foul.
In the described case in the question, no statistical registration is made, but if it was called a technical foul, a UNFORCED TURNOVER is charged against the offender player in the category "TF".

Mar 8, 2014; Durham, NC, USA; Duke Blue Devils students taunt North Carolina Tar Heels guard Leslie McDonald (2) as he throws the ball inbounds to a teammate in their game against the Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium. In this Photograph by Mark Dolejs from USA TODAY Sports presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .
Photograph: by Mark Dolejs from USA TODAY Sports

About the Video Analysis=
One commentary about the rules to resume this topic: the defense may not break the plane of the line, if so they will receive a warning and then a technical foul. If the defense breaks the plane and touches the ball or the player BEFORE THE BALL IS RELEASED across the plane the penalty is a technical foul. When we analyze a basketball game we must have the video analysis help to decide the responsibility of each one of the player in this situation.

All the terms in this answer are explained widely at The eBA Basketball System Book and in eBA Clinic ONLINE.

This topic is resumed in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Encyclopedia
at the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book

Video Case Study:
Basketball 3-pointer annulled because 24 seconds

"... Legal 3-pointer annulled: this is the 1998 NBA Finals Game Six - Chicago Bulls 87 Utah Jazz 86. Here you have two cases of shooting over the end of the 24 seconds: in the second case of the clip there is no problem of register. But in the first I have doubts: the basket was annulled but the replay shows that the shooting was legal: what's the register of this play ? We penalize the player with a missed field goal ?

How the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register this play ? ..."

"... Only 42 pro basketball players have scored at least 20,000 points and just 13 of those players also totaled at least 5000 assists.

Barring injury, James will likely become the only player ranked in the top five all-time in both departments; there is only one player who currently ranks in the top 15 in both categories: Oscar Robertson ranks sixth in assists (9887) and 12th in scoring (26,710 points), though it should be noted that when Robertson retired he ranked first in assists and second in scoring, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain. ..."

"... James led the Heat in scoring and assists (10) versus Golden State while ranking third in rebounds (seven); James supposedly had to leave Cleveland in order to surround himself with a better supporting cast so that he would not have to singlehandedly carry his team but this season James is leading the Heat in minutes, points, rebounds, assists and steals (he is also second on the team in both field goal percentage and blocked shots).

This is nothing new; last season, James led the Heat in minutes, points, rebounds, assists, steals and field goal percentage. ..."

"... Three of the top 10 scorers in pro basketball history--Julius Erving (sixth), Moses Malone (seventh) and Dan Issel (ninth)--played in the ABA, as did George Gervin (14th), Rick Barry (who is tied with Reggie Miller for 17th place on the all-time scoring list) and Artis Gilmore (20th).

Gervin and Malone are the only members of that group who scored 20,000 points in the NBA, so at least they are "officially" included in the 20,000 point club roster, but Erving, Issel and Barry are neither mentioned nor counted when media members discuss this topic. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Basketball Personal Fouls eBA Analysis ~ Concept & Statistics

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
"... With the exception of the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, why fouls are generally not even considered in evaluating and efficiency formulas by the other statistical systems ? ... "

There is a common misconception in the other basketball statistics analysis systems, specially at the live-game statistics, and personal fouls are generally not even considered when evaluating a player's talent.

This error or "statistics myth" raised because the false concept that it is assumed everyone commits those personal fouls and they are unavoidable.

Even, a foul means a defender has been caught out of position and has damaged his team by adding to a number that could eventually lead to free possessions via the Bonus.

Personal Fouls eBA Analysis
Photograph: Chronicle ON Line

But the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System have a rating of personal foul made and received and qualify each one as "good", "neutral" or "bad": the rating is explained in eBA Clinics Online and discussed in the "Statistics & Statisticians Board" in the forum, which is reserved for registered members.

Something like when 2 free throws are missed the foul actually becomes a positive for the fouling team much like a steal. If only one free throw is made it becomes a tie, nothing lost or gained. When 2 out of 3 free throws are made on the average the free throws become a negative for the fouling team.

The situation in which the personal foul was committed, plays an important role in this personal fouls eBA
analysis

About the Applicability of a Statistical System for High School Basketball
& the Basketball Training Video in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Applicability of a Statistical System for High School Basketball

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
In our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Clinics, the participants always ask about the applicability of our statistical system for high school basketball.

It is inevitable: last years high school students get scouters attention ! We read in one of our articles in the Scouting section an appeal to the high school students "to be sure to enjoy their High School Basketball experience, and sell-out for the team !

Some student/athletes over-emphasize the recruiting process and end up under-achieving because of the excessive pressure they put on themselves to impress recruiters, an over-emphasis upon statistics, or saving themselves for college. Work hard, hustle, and play your game to help your team!"

It is clear, from the name of our system and the site, that we are working for "basketball professional teams". I don't think that a complete statistical system must be applied in the High School, but about the fact that the high school coach must keep basics statistics we have no any doubt, specially on the last years.

....work with your players on basketball fundamentals !

And its use and results must be emphasized in the coaching program: that's mean, the use of the stats to help the player to improve himself in the rights areas and to assist the coach in the programming of his trainings more accurately.

Perhaps the clinics participants intended to ask if all this set of complex formulas of analysis are necessary at high school.... Please hear to this old basketball coach and statistician analyst: all the time you can.... work with your players on basketball fundamentals !

The future NBA Coach of your actual players will give, however secretly, the credit to You....!

Read More at eBA ENCYCLOPEDIA ONLINE, search "statistical system for High School" in this blog and consult the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.

Forecasting NBA Basketball Playoff Outcomes Using the Weighted Likelihood
by Feifang Hu & James V Zidek

"... Predicting the outcome of a future game between two sports teams poses a challenging problem of interest to statistical scientists as well as the general public. To be effective such prediction must exploit special contextual features of the game. In this paper, we confront such features and address the need to:

(i) use all relevant sample information;
(ii) reflect the home game advantage.

To do so we use the weighted likelihood. Finally we demonstrate the value of the method by showing how it could have been used to predict the 96/97 NBA playoff results. Our weighted likelihood-based method proves to be quite accurate. ..."

"... This paper demonstrates the use of the weighted likelihood (WL) to predict the winner of National Basketball Association (NBA) final games and applies the method in each of the games played in the 1996-97 finals between the two top ranked teams, the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz. However, as we try to indicate, the WL has much wider applicability inside as well outside the domain of sports.way dunker created by a teammate’s steal, offensive rebound, and or perfect outlet pass? ..."

"... The genesis of our work lies in two statistical problems encountered in sports:
(i) the prediction of the outcome of a future game between two specified sports teams;
(ii) the assessment of the accuracy of this prediction.

Since typically these two teams will not have met more than just a few times in the given season, little direct information will be available to the forecaster. The consequent small sample size will make naive predictions inaccurate and the associated prediction intervals excessively large. ..."

"... Usually in sports, the outcome of any one game derives from the combined efforts of two teams that have seldom played each other before. Yet these games yield the only direct sample information available about the relative strength of these two teams.

At the same time, each of these teams will have played many games against other teams thereby generating relevant (although not direct) sample information. The predictive probability of a win in the next game between these two teams, should combine both kinds of information ..."

"... Based on the probabilities and the confidence intervals of Table 1, we can find the probabilities with which the Bulls (and Jazz) will win the Final by Game 4, 5, 6 or 7.

Also we can calculate the total win probabilities for the Bulls against the Jazz based on its home and away win probabilities given by each of the three estimation methods.
Confidence intervals for these win probabilities may be obtained as well.

In Table 2 where the results are reported, and in the tables that follow, that interval is obtained for any pair of teams say A and B from the 95% asymptotic intervals for A’s home- and A’s away-win-against-B probabilities.. ..."

"... The method in this paper provides guidelines for the development of a prediction strategy. Its implementation, more specifically the construction of weights entails the incorporation of any special features that may obtain when the game is played.

For example, one might need to incorporate the knowledge that certain key players cannot play in that game."

To be more precise, we fitted a logistic model using the software R with the response variable being 1 or 0 according as the outcome of any game during the season was a visitor or home victory. We used dummy variables to represent visitor and home teams in each game throughout the season.

Thus for example, BullsV=1 and Super-sonics=1, all other dummies being 0, would mean those two teams were playing for that particular game, the visitors being the Bulls. For each of the factors, ‘visitor’ and ‘home’ we represented by the dummies in this way, we arbitrarily chose the 76er’s as the baseline team.

Thus, in effect, the fitted intercept, suitably transformed, provides an estimate of the likelihood of a ‘1’ in the purely hypothetical situation where the 76er’s played themselves at home as the visitors.

The coefficients for the remaining dummies represent the deviations from the 76er’s performance for each of the other teams depending on whether they were playing at home or awa ..." Read more ...

Muti said : yes, viva Italia... But, as we are in house, quite at home, let us speak together.

Kobe Bryant is not as Good as Michael Jordan -- So What?
by David Friedman ~ in our Weekly Press & Video Clippings

Press Clippings:
Kobe Bryant is not as Good as Michael Jordan--So What?
By David Friedman

Basketball Statistician's Friday Press Clippings
From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Kobe Bryant is not as Good as Michael Jordan
So What? ' by David Friedman

"... Kobe Bryant scored 26 points during the Lakers' 100-94 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday December 14 to move past Michael Jordan into third place on pro basketball's career scoring list.

One might think that this accomplishment would be an occasion to reflect upon Bryant's consistency and longevity but while some observers have taken that approach many commentators go to great lengths--either via anecdotes or via statistics--to "prove" that Jordan is not just better than Bryant but that Jordan is much better.

The very fact that the comparison is often made--even if it is just done to belittle Bryant--says a lot. ..."

"... The way that some people compare Jordan and Bryant is interesting. The best case for Jordan versus Bryant would focus on Jordan's efficiency and Jordan's performances during his 6-0 run in NBA Finals (Bryant has one more Finals appearance than Jordan but also two more Finals losses).

Of course, field goal percentages in general were higher during Jordan's era, the rules and style of play were much different and Jordan's overall numbers benefited from him playing college ball before immediately becoming an NBA starter while Bryant jumped straight to the NBA from high school and thus needed some on the job training as a bench player. ..."

"... While some media members and fans may not understand or appreciate the rough edges of Bryant's personality, Kevin Durant, the 2014 NBA MVP, respects Bryant's approach and refutes the idea that good players do not want to play with Bryant:

Excuse my language, but that's (expletive). I want to play with a winner every single night, especially somebody who wants to win that bad, who works that hard, who demands a lot, who raises up your level.

I'd want to play with a guy like that every day...(His style) may make people uncomfortable, how he acts and just how he approaches the game, but I love that type of stuff. I think (the accusation) is BS. ..."

Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls talks to Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers about leadership and potential to succeed in the game of basketball In this Photograph from Flickr presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .

"... Once one moves past comparing Bryant to Jordan and once one understands that any player with the right mindset would welcome the challenge and opportunity of playing with Bryant, one can focus on just how remarkable Bryant's current season is.

Forget for a moment his career-low field goal percentage and consider the fact that Bryant is a highly productive player in his 19th NBA season. Only three players in NBA history have even made it past their 19th season: ......"

"... In contrast, during the 2014-15 season Bryant is logging heavy minutes (35.4 mpg), his floor game is still excellent (5.1 rpg, 4.9 apg and 1.4 spg, numbers that are comparable to his career averages of 5.3 rpg, 4.8 apg and 1.4 spg) and he is scoring 24.6 ppg.

Bryant's field goal percentage (.372) is not good but he is remarkably productive and durable for a 19 year veteran who is coming off of two serious leg injuries. Bryant is in excellent shape and if his body holds up his field goal percentage will probably improve during the course of this season as he regains his game legs after being out of action for such an extended period.
..."

"... No, Kobe Bryant is not quite as good as Michael Jordan and, no, Kobe Bryant is no longer as efficient or dominant as he was during his prime--or even during his last healthy full season, when he was a legitimate MVP-caliber player averaging 25.5 ppg on .463 field goal shooting (including a career-high .510 from two point range) as a 17 year NBA veteran--but Bryant is the closest thing to Jordan that we have seen or are likely to see anytime soon. Bryant's former dominance and his remarkable, ongoing longevity should be celebrated. ..." Read more ...

About the Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated
& the Basketball Training Video in our Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
Are the individual statistics of good players on bad teams underrated in raw form ?
Are the individual statistics of bad players on good teams overrated in raw form ?

Some reflexions to begin the discussion:

1) Most teams without their best player will turn down the averages than with and probably lower than league average with the best players still included, so an adaptation must be overdone it in the team analysis in the cases of best players off.

2) There is team influence on player FG% and the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System performs adaptations either in the score or in the evaluation of the score.

But our System takes always in account that the player is utmostly agent or cause of the shots he takes.

3) A player on a bad team may take more hard shots and fewer not hurried ones and vice versa on a good team, so the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System takes all of these shots out and analyze the remaining shooting precision.

Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated
Photograph: Vedia PhotoStream

4) Efficiency connected with statistics might become greater on a better team when the defense needs to move outward and defend so many other menaces.

However, from another point of view, the percentage of touches might grow worse.
When you're encircled by better players, you might get less touches than if you are the exclusive talent on a bad team.

5) And finally, good teammates among the good players will still get some recognition, bad teammates on the court will not gain as many bonus points and look inferior in individual ratings because of their unsatisfactory influence on other teammate shooting.

About the Points per Possession Basketball Statistic
& the Basketball Training Video in our Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Points per Possession Basketball Statistic

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
Many coaches are now using what is called Points/Possession, or Turnovers/Possession.

The Pts./Poss. is an impartial reliable stat when all things are considered.

However it doesn't take into account the optimal pace as which a team plays.

Team A that receives 90 points may actually produce a better defensive efficiency than team B that allowed 80 points: in a fast paced game, Team A received 90 points but in 90 possessions.

This means their defensive efficiency was 1.0. Team B on the other hand received only 80 points but in a much slower paced game in 60 total possessions.

That is a defensive efficiency of 1.3 actually worse than team A who allowed ninety points.

Here at Respect Kobe, we pride ourselves on being fair and rational in our evaluation of players — including our beloved Kobe Bryant, as well as any challengers to his title of “best basketball player alive.”
Photograph: Kobe Bryant. Respect.

Points per possession is a completely good stat but what is more important is to break it down into ranges such as an offensive or defensive efficiency when you score or allow 90-100 points, 80-90, 70-80 and so forth.

The parameter we will find is that the team have better offensive and defensive efficiency ratings when he plays at its team's optimal pace.

The eBA System do this break down in his "Quarters Reports", when the game is Analyzed every 5 minutes by separate.

About the Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out & Basketball Training Video
in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
How to make a statistical calculation of the player's missed playing time ascribable to fouls ?
Is there in the the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System some data about the player utilization and substitution set of rules in the foul trouble case ? That means to say, when they are sent to the bench and after which foul number ?

To calculate missed playing time ascribable to fouls, we must base our analysis in the following assumptions about player usage and substitution patterns:

In FIBA & NBA:
No change when a player commits his first foul.
Committing his second a player foul would be replaced and have to wait at the bench until the half of the second quarter.
A player committing his third foul would be replaced and would be a bench player until the third quarter.
With the critical (in FIBA) fourth foul committed a player would be replaced and have to sit until the beginning of the the fourth quarter.
In NBA:
A player committing his fifth foul would have to be out of the game until the half of the fourth quarter.

Sarunas Jasikevicius (R) and Robertas Javtokas of Lithuania sit on the substitution bench during their friendly basketball game against Turkey as part of their training for the Beijing Olympics, at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel in Macau August 2, 2008
Photograph: Day Life

Now, how often do players foul out of a game ? When the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul happens ? Which percentage of the players with the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul are fouled out ?

- 49% of the 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA come with about 3 minutes left in the game: remember to consider, 40 minutes in FIBA and 48 in the NBA !
- 82% of all players who perpetrate a 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA do not foul out.

This is reasonable from the moment the studies from eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System demonstrates that even the most players having a tendency to foul lose only a few minutes per game because of their foul trouble. But they play the great majority of their minutes near the danger of fouling out.

The analysis of the different types of Foul Trouble, were studied in the eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking Clinic.

The Basketball Team Rebounds ~ Concept & Statistics and Actuality News Video
in this Week Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Basketball Team Rebounds ~ Concept & Statistics

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
What exactly comprises and means a 'team rebound' ?
In each situation a shot is taken and missed and possession may or may not change, but the rebound cannot be credited to an individual so it counts as a 'team rebound' for whichever team is awarded the ball.

A team rebound is awarded to the opponent team to the player who attempted the shot if, before the buzzer sounded, no player had gained control of the rebound.

A team rebound is awarded to the team to which the ball is awarded out of bounds or at the free throw line as a result of a missed field goal attempt or a final free throw attempt. This includes circumstances when:

- the ball goes out of bounds without any player having secured possession;

- a final free attempt from a serial misses the rim;

- the shooter commits a free throw violation in a a final free attempt from a serial;

- a loose ball foul is called immediately following a missed field goal attempt or final free throw attempt;

- a last technical foul shot missed.

A team rebound is awarded to a team that first gains possession following a jump ball when such a jump ball immediately follows a missed field goal attempt or a final free throw attempt, before any player is credited with an individual rebound.

A team rebound is awarded following a missed shot ( either field goal or last free throw ) when a live ball becomes dead due to the expiration of a period. A team rebound is credited to the opponent team to the player who attempted that shot.

About the differences between the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System and the NBA statistician's rules, for example, are developed in the eBA Encyclopedia, and we'll discuss them in a next message in the eBA Forums.

About Traveling Outside the Court: Rule Basketball Statistics Tracking
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About Traveling Outside the Court: Rule Basketball Statistics Tracking

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... Can a travel be called on a player outside the court, clock stopped and the player is given the ball for a pass in? ..."

A travel violation cannot be called, but it can be a throw in violation.

Basketball Rule Fundamentals:
A player taking a throw-in:
- shall not take more than five (5) seconds to release the ball;
- shall not step into the playing court while having the ball in his hand(s);
- shall not cause the ball to touch out-of-bounds, after it has been released on the throw-in;
- shall not touch the ball on the playing court before it has touched another player;
- shall not cause the ball to enter the basket directly;
- shall not move a total distance from the designated throw-in place, laterally in one or in both directions, not to exceed a total of one (1) meter before or while releasing the ball: he is, however, permitted to move directly backwards from the line as far as circumstances allow.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

In the case of a throw-in violation:
- if the player take more than five (5) seconds to release the ball, without opponent interference, a 'personal unforced turnover' in the throw in category will be registered;
- when the violation is caused by the opponent action, a team closed defense for example, we'll register a 'team forced turnover' in the 'throw in' category.

See in our forums the 'basketball free throws' topics and the exposition "Basketball Free Throws Statistical Analysis" at eBA SYSTEM ONLINE.

All the terms in this post are widely explained at The eBA Basketball Encyclopedia.

"... Here’s the thing that makes life so interesting. The theory of evolution claims that only the strong shall survive.

Maybe so…maybe so…

But the theory of competition says just because their the strong doesn’t mean they cant get their ass’s kicked. Thats right.

See what every long shot, come from behind underdog will tell you is this. The other guy may in fact be the favorite, the odds maybe stacked against you, fair enough. But what the odds don’t know is this isn’t a math test.

This is a completely different kind of test. One where PASSION has a funny way of trumping logic. So before you step up to the starting line, before the whistle blows, and the clock starts ticking. Just remember out here the results don’t always add up.

No matter what the stats may say, and the experts may think, and the commentators may have predicted, when the race is on all bets are off.
Don’t be surprised if someone decides to flip the script and take a pass on yelling uncle.

And then suddenly as the old saying goes, WE GOT OURSELVES A GAME! ..."

About the Basketball Possessions Concept & the Good and Bad Statistics
& the Basketball Training Video in our Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Weekly's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Possessions Concept & the Good and Bad Statistics

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
When using possessions to rate offenses and defenses, an excellent exercise in getting to know basketball, the benefits of this definition become clear:

"Possession for a team, it is the period of play between when one team gains control of the ball and when the other team gains control of the ball. For an individual, a possession or part of a possession is credited when that individual causes to end his/her team's possession."

We'll analyze the following 2 situations:

1) A player brings the ball up court, takes a 20 foot jump shot and makes it.

2) A player brings the ball upcourt, takes a 20 foot jump shot and misses, but a teammate rebounds, misses the putback, then get his own rebound and finally puts in a layup.

The first situation involves one scoring possession and one total possession regardless of which definition is used.

The second situation has one scoring and one total possession using above definition. Using the other meaning, the second situation involves one scoring possession and three total possessions.

Now, which situation represented the better offense ?

Oscar Robertson is the only player to ever average a triple-double in a season. He had amazing numbers in the 1961-1962 season with 30.8 points, 11.4 assists and 12.5 rebounds. In this AP photograph by Hans Von Nolde from Grantland presented by #eBAStatsGroup #BasketballStatistics Analysis .

About Basketball Possessions and the Good & Bad Statistics:
David Berri, Martin Schmidt, and Stacey Brook, authors of The Wages of Wins, have come up with an algorithm for assessing the value of professional basketball players, using econometric methods to objectively valuate basketball statistics in terms of their impact on winning games.

The basic theory of the authors is that measurements of a player's efficiency are better tools for evaluating players than statistics like "points per game."

Since teams have an equal number of possessions in a basketball contest, the team that efficiently uses those possessions is more likely to win.

Turning the ball over without scoring is "bad," while converting a possession into points is "good."

The authors regressed nine statistics to find their relative impact on wins. Here's a simplification of their findings.

"Good" statistics: Each point, rebound, and steal have relatively equal impacts on winning. They are about twice as important as each block and assist. So, to quantify the positive statistics, here's a simple formula:

points + rebounds + steals + 1/2 (blocks) + 1/2 (assists)

"Bad" statistics: field goal attempts and turnovers have equally negative impacts on winning. They are twice as bad as free throw attempts and personal fouls. Here's a simple formula for the "bad" stats:

field goal attempts + 1/2 (free throw attempts) + turnovers + 1/2 (personal fouls)

Putting this all together we get what the authors call a "Win Score":

Points + Rebounds + Steals + 1/2 (blocks) + 1/2 (assists) - field goal attempts - 1/2 (free throw attempts) - turnovers - 1/2 (personal fouls)

Win Score proves to be an excellent method of comparing players who play the same position. But since power forwards and centers tend to have higher average Win Scores than guards, adjustments need to be made when comparing little men to big men.
