Basketball Statistics Questions: Last FT 2 Seconds To Go, 2 Points Ahead...
& Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
• 2 Seconds To Go, 2 Points Ahead and Last Free Throw

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
...A well known game situation: 2 seconds to go, 2 points ahead and last free throw. The player intentionally misses the free-throw according with the indications from the bench to avoid a complete 2 seconds possession for the opponent. He succeed and they win the game. Can this action be registered in such way that we don't "punish" the shooter's Evaluation Metrics with a -1 because of the missed free
throw ?

What is the Statistics Tracking Rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book ? ...

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking=
If you are performing the analysis by means of video, and you are not sure about those "bench indications". you have no alternative and must register the missed free-throw.

The decibel level at Rupp Arena reached epic levels with Nick Calathes at the free throw line with less than a second remaining.

If you were present at this game, and you heard or saw clearly the coach's indications, you may use the "Team Player" option to register the missed throw, registering this action in the "play-by-play" report.

• About a Traveling Turnover, a 8/10 Seconds Backcourt Violation & Pts Scored in the Wrong Basket

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... A1 jumps and shoots, but B1 taps the ball and is still in A1 ones hand. A1 returns with ball that never left his hand.

Is this jump ball, traveling, or a block shoot? B1 just barely tap the ball in the shooters hand.

And what is the statistician rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ..."

eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking:
If B1 prevents A1 from releasing the ball, it's a held ball, with the statistical record according the alternating possession rule.

If A1 chooses not to release the ball, it's traveling, recording a forced turnover against A1 and a forced steal in favour to B1, the player deflecting, or team player, depending upon the situation.

"... The 8 / 10 seconds time limit rule violation is a PERSONAL or TEAM turnover ? FORCED or
UNFORCED ?
By the way, all the basketball leagues have this rule ? Any difference ? ..."

eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking:
The 8/10 seconds backcourt violation is generally a TEAM TURNOVER, being FORCED or UNFORCED depending upon the opponent's action: if it is as result of an all or half court press defense (FORCED) or a defender's error (UNFORCED).

"... To whom are credited the points scored in the wrong basket ?
To any player ? To the opponent captain ? And what the stats rule ? Turnover ? ..."

Points scored in the wrong basket are never credited to a player, but are credited to the team in a footnote. Points awarded for basket interference or goaltending by the defense are credited to the shooter. When a live ball goes in the basket, the last player who touched the ball causes it to go there ( from the Instructions & Rules Coverage - Scoring 9. ).

About the Basketball Second Chance Points & Basketball Training Video
in our Monday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Second Chance Points

About Statistics & Statisticians... and Coaches that
As you surely noticed, the graduates at the concluded eBA CLINICS ONLINE rewrite, correct, enhance and update every thread at our Basketball Statistics Forums, as part of their practical work. Now we are merging all the unitary messages and similar ones in a common thread ( thus reducing the number of topics ): and the threads are categorized according to the eBA Basketball Analysis System contents, which is a more practical approach to the search at the Basketball Statistics Study Forums.

"....When a team shoots a high percentage from the floor, the number of second chance opportunities will distinctly be smaller, but the efficiency of the second chance possession is not a function of the number of second chance opportunities in a game.

Consequently, if teams have higher efficiency during second chances than first chances, a team's game efficiency, taking all the different aspects into account, is nearly always increased only because the offensive rebounding. By contrast, since that relationship appears alternating, the important objective of collecting and evaluating data is in the bonus possessions produced by the net offensive rebounding differential.

... Pao Gasol shoots in a second chance opportunity ...
Photograph: SILive.com

A well balanced team would be more effective on second chance points than on first chance points because, on most first chance possessions, the defense is accomplished and the offensive team must attack the set defense to find their scoring opportunities.

In whatever manner, with possessions that go on with an offensive rebound, the defense is often lacking order at the instant of the rebound, and these possessions often end with either a foul [the most effective method of scoring] or a tap-in or other relatively easy shot.

Only when the offensive team decides to withdraw the ball back out following an offensive rebound and run its half court offense would the defense have an opportunity to reset itself.

Concisely, to resume this post, teams obtain more easy scores in second chance possessions than in first chance possessions, so they must be registered and analyzed as it was explained and is included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System. ...." About the Assists Tracking in the NBA and according the eBA System
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Assists Tracking in the NBA and according the eBA System

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... How are assists awarded in the NBA?

Is it a pass that results in a basket with no dribbles, one dribble, etc., in between?

As in the NBA everything is different: are there specific guidelines for official
tracking ? ..."

Basically, there is no difference with another leagues in this category, only the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System have a special treatment with the assists.

According to the NBA’s statisticians' manual, an assist is credited to the player tossing "the last pass leading directly to a field goal if, and only if, the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating immediate reaction toward the basket."

Consequently, according to the traditional statisticians' rules an assist is a pass that lead directly to a basket.
Any assist is credited to the player tossing the last pass leading directly to a field goal, if and only if the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating immediate reaction toward the basket.
No more than one assist is to be credited for each field goal.
An in-bounds pass can be an assist, if it leads directly to a field goal.

An assist can be credited if a receiving player takes a dribble, so long as he makes an immediate reaction toward the basket.

John Stockton, the all-time NBA leader in assists and steals, will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame by the second greatest true point guard ever, Isiah Thomas. To put his statistical accomplishments into perspective, he had 15,806 assists and 3,265 steals. The #2 assists leader was Marc Jackson with 10,334 assists and the #2 steals leader was Michael Jordan with only 2,514 steals.

Another obvious element is that this metric is somewhat dependent on how often a team made three-pointers, because the circumstantial numerical evidence that so many three-pointers are assisted.

It is not surprising at all that three-pointers tend to get more assists, having a portion of two-pointers which are "un-assistable", the result of put-backs and tip-ins, while few threes are shot off of the dribble.

Another evidence in our assist analysis maybe a good shooting team that doesn't score often on put-backs, so there were more two-point assist opportunities.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, is able to give two assists - like in hockey - on one play.
Many times, a point guard gives a great pass, and another player makes a pass that leads to the basket.

The first pass gets a credit in the game analysis chapter - no at the stats numbers ! -, because it can be more important than the second pass. On the other hand, a great pass that leads to the shooter being fouled is credited as an assist.

In the case of free throws, eBA System records the assist if the fouled player makes both (or the three) throws or one of them. But in this case, in our rate we give the assist a qualification of one point for each free throw made.

The eBA System records the following stats about Assists, in addition to the Made and Received ones:

Defensive assists, missed assists, potential assists, assists in paint, assists outside of paint, within each, assists leading to jump shots, assists leading to lay-ups, assists leading to foul shots, and within each of these, are they part of fast break or not.

See in our forums the 'basketball assists' topics and the exposition "Basketball Assists Statistical Analysis" at eBA System Book.

Video Case Study:
Basketball 3/5/8/24 Seconds Cases: Team TO or Personal Turnover ?

"... Generally, we know, the 24 seconds violation is a team turnover and consequently a team steal for the team in defense. This is the game 1 of the NBA playoff game between the Nets & the Raps at the Air Canada Centre. This video clip features a fast break basket by Bostjan Nachbar ... and concludes with the Raps getting called on a 24 second shot clock violation. But previously there is an altered shot gained by the red Nets...

Should you give the statistical tracking according to your eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ? Is it a team turnover or a personal of the last blocked shooter ? Is it a team steal because of the 24 seconds violation or is a personal steal of the blocker ? ..."
