About Basketball Per-Minute Statistics and the Player Contribution Measure
and Basketball Actuality News Video in our Thursday's Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About Basketball Per-Minute Statistics and the Player Contribution Measure

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
Per-minute Statistics: "... Per minute stats are a good manner to compare players within a team, seeing how a player off the bench might fare compared to the player in front of him in the rotation, but we must be careful about players who scarcely play - Jackie Butler may have averaged 96 points per 48 in the 5 minutes he played for the Knicks last year, but very doubtful he could have achieved it.

Also, we must be careful comparing players from one team to another. For example, the season Steve Nash averaged 16.1 assists per 48 while Tony Parker averaged just 8.6 - a large part of the reason for that is the pace and style Phoenix plays gave Nash more opportunities than Parker.

Per-48 Stats is not meant to be a projection of what a player would average if he played 48 minutes per game. Keep in mind that it is simply an expression of per-minute stats.

They are expressed as per-48 so that the resulting averages are easy to deal with: "23 points per 48 minutes" is easier to read and understand than ' 0,479 points per minute '; ..."

Players are not so happy 'playing their minutes' on the bench... but here Shack O'neill, Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher plays their 'special' connection between them... inbounds and outbounds ! In this picture from Lipstick Alley presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis
Photograph: Lipstick Alley

Player Contribution Measure: "... Time played is a parameter not used with frequency in player's valuation although it is included in the box stats.

To relate player's valuation with his minutes played will give us his "efficiency", degree of cooperation into the team and with his teammates, interesting factor for the coach, the player and the game analyst.

The team's 'efficiency' per minute is obtained by dividing the valuation points, taken from the statistics, by the possible play minutes ( 40 or 48 ) and the mean of player's efficiency per minute by dividing newly by 200 or 240 ( total minutes played by 5 players on the court ).

The result compared with the player's individual ( valuation / minutes played ) and multiplied by his minutes in play will give us his efficiency or degree of cooperation over or under the team's mean.

From the moment that you can have only five players on the floor at one time, which invariably leads to some players seeing more action than others, how can you measure the contribution of players who play less and thus have fewer points, rebounds, and so on, than the starters?

The eBA Annual Basketball Statistics Clinic uses the per-minute stat to measure a player's value in terms of any other raw data stat for players with a low range of minutes played.
Say that one player scores eight points in a game, however, plays only eight minutes.

His per-minute scoring average is one point per minute, which extrapolated to a 40-minute game, would be 40 points per game.

But, actually, nobody in the NBA, WNBA or Euroleague, for that matter - averages 40 points per game. Suddenly, those eight points looks more impressive.

Although coaches find the per-minute stat helpful in evaluating players, but it has its limitations. Longer time periods belongs surely to the best players, and shorter time periods may yield misleading stats. ..."

"... Imagine a player that scores a three-pointer in his first minute of play and then sat out the rest of the game. Does anyone truly believe that he would've scored 144 points (3 x 48) in that game had he played the 48 minutes ? ..."

Still seeing his touches come first on the perimeter, second with his savvy movement and hustle off the ball, and third in the post, Mirotic's versatile, but highly efficient offensive game has been a big reason why his club is in first place in the most difficult group of the Euroleague and tied for first in the ACB. Mirotic is not an elite athlete and may lack a degree of NBA upside because of it, but he's playing great basketball for one of Europe's best teams and couldn't be showing too much more in the way of role-player potential for the NBA. by David Friedman

"... It should be obvious that neither field goal percentage nor an "advanced basketball statistic" like true shooting percentage provide a complete description of a player's shooting ability and/or scoring prowess; a player who posts gaudy numbers in one or both of those categories may be a limited offensive contributor who can only score effectively in a very specific role (i.e., a big man who can only convert from point blank range or a slow-footed perimeter player who can only make spot up jumpers). ..."

"... A player's offensive efficiency can only be accurately determined by examining his ability to create shots for himself and his teammates, his ability to score from a variety of areas on the court and his ability to draw double teams that can break down the opposing defense. Such evaluations can only be made by an informed observer who watches the sport with an objective eye. ..."

"... A player who shoots .600 from the field but cannot make a shot outside of the paint and is easily defended one on one is not nearly as valuable as a player who shoots .450 from the field but can score from anywhere on the court and must be double-teamed.

Is there a way to reasonably compare two players who have such divergent skill sets? Kirk Goldsberry's solution to this problem is a new statistic that he and fellow Michigan State professor Ashton Shortridge devised: ShotScore ranks every NBA player's shooting prowess based on the relative difficulty of each shot that he took; Goldsberry and Shortridge determined the average NBA field goal percentage from every spot on the floor, compared the average percentages to each player's percentages from those spots on the floor and then expressed the results in terms of actual points scored versus expected points. ..."

"... There is little doubt that ShotScore is a more precise measurement of a player's shooting efficiency than scoring average and/or field goal percentage.

The usefulness of ShotScore and the measured tone of Goldsberry's writing are a welcome contribution to basketball theory--and a marked contrast to the way that far too many "stat gurus" make arrogant and bold declarations that are unsupported by facts/objective observations.

However, there are some potential drawbacks to ShotScore:
(1) it relies heavily on the completeness and accuracy of play by play data regarding shot locations and
(2) a person must have access to a tremendous amount of data in order to calculate a player's ShotScore. ..."

"... ShotScore could be very useful for general managers and coaches but it will be difficult for it to become a mainstream statistic unless/until the accuracy of the play by play data can be objectively proven and unless/until it becomes easier to compute each player's ShotScore; during a game, an informed observer can note the areas in which a player is effective and can instantly calculate his field goal percentage to get a "quick and dirty" estimate of his overall efficiency but there is no way that such an observer can instantly compute a ShotScore unless/until the NBA provides such data in real time (which could perhaps happen at some point). ..." This video which belongs to 'Musical America' was recorded during the award ceremony to the musician of the year of the publication 'Musical America' in December 2009. Neapolitan director Riccardo Muti makes a memorable speech about what it means to conduct an orchestra ... he means really direct... It has hilarious moments (apparently reaches a great comic gag) and ends with an exciting definitión about your job, a job he describes as "the world's most difficult profession.

... Drills to Build Your Offensive Imagination with Bob McKillop ...

NEW DVD on OCTOBER 1st, 2013 ~ 64 minutes
with Bob McKillop, Davidson College Head Coach;
2013 USA Men's Basketball World University Games Head Coach;
2013 Southern Conference Champions;
8x SoCon Coach of the Year;
2008 NABC Coach of the Year; over 400 career wins

• Learn the "attack the attacker" philosophy to force defensive mistakes
  and create offensive opportunities
• Learn how to improve your team's shooting percentages by 3 to 5 percent
• Discover ways to utilize a drill for both offensive and defensive principles in any system

Fill your playbook with excellent motion and set offenses that will help your players become better on the offensive end of the court.

2013 USA Basketball World University Games Head Coach Bob McKillop details the offensive system he uses to put breakdown drills in place. You will learn how to teach the offense within your program and discover the concept of attacking the attacker to create flow and rhythm in your offensive. McKillop emphasizes simplicity, which enables players to read the defense and create the appropriate rhythm and flow.

Using on-court demonstrations to present the basic principles of the Davidson offense, McKillop describes how these drills have created teams that are successful on the offensive end.

You will learn how to teach your players to attack space, find the open man, catch and see the floor, dribble with a purpose, and finish the cut in order to make your half-court offense unstoppable. Coach McKillop uses on-court demonstrations to teach five drills that instill these concepts, yet keeps your offensive game simple. These drills will help players become better decision-makers on the court.

This is one of the best DVDs you can buy at any level to help teach players how to play basketball - not just a patterned offense. Coach McKillop's concepts are easy to implement at any level and will help every player develop into an offensive threat.

Good to know ...!

WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD !

We are connected to 50 + / - Basketball Groups in LinkedIn, and if only 1 group manager tags you as "needs moderation," for whatever purpose, then LI compulsorily proscribes you for making contributions to ALL your other groups ! How absurd !.

Some LinkedIn groups are the complete antipode of freedom of speech ! It has also been
speculated by others who are up-to-date victims of this type of group moderation, that LinkedIn moderators conspicuously have their own agendas and aren’t putting content live from individuals who they see as a menace or contest ...

THE DOGS ARE BARKING, SANCHO ! It is a sign that we are advancing....!
( Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra from: Don Quixote )

Problemas con LinkedIn ...

As an immediate outcome of this we have decided to simply dismiss ourselves from these groups ( Why ? Read again the last paragraph ...):

NBA Alumni; Basketball Coaches: The Cross Over Movement; I love this game; AAU Basketball; Basketball Coaches In Search of a coaching Position; The Business of Basketball; etc.

and continue doing what we do in the far superior Google Plus communities we are a part of and moderated as our Community:

BASKETBALL for Everyone ! All the BASKETBALL !
1st. FULLY UNRESTRICTED BASKETBALL GROUP IN GOOGLE + !

and also we continue interacting in the following HIGHLY RECOMMENDED LinkedIn Groups where moderators and members RESPECT BASKETBALL:

•  "Ex-Yugoslavia" basketball coaching group
•  Australian Basketball Network
•  Basketball Network VOLASPORT.com
•  Basketball World
•  BBT (Evolutionary Basketball Training)
•  Dutch Basketball Network
•  Useful Tools for Sports Teams

Additionally, in attempting to join the group 'Professional International Basketball Network', our request is pending since two years ago ( and we'll NOT DELETE IT ! ) and the "moderator" has not responded to a single email from us; and we have sent many...

Fortunately, there are other media's in which to work. LinkedIn & FaceBook are still not the only one out there !

About the Basketball Individual Charge Statistical Tracking and the Steals Charting
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Basketball Individual Charge Statistical Tracking

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... "... Can we state that each individual charge taken is equal to a steal ?

It seems to me that it is equal value to that of a steal because in both instances, you take away a possession from your opponent.

How is this stat collected into season rankings in the eBA Basketball Statistics
System
? ..."

You wrote that each individual charge taken is equal to a steal. Although in both cases we have a steal I don't agree with this: the value of both actions is not the same.

A fair amount of the value of a steal is not just ending the opposition's possession but the fast-break opportunity it provides. We'll go on with this discussion (see below), but an important quantity of some data about the offensive value of a steal is well developed in the exposition about this topic in the eBA Basketball Statistics Register Clinic.

Meanwhile use the option "search" of the eBA Forum to look for "steal" and the other messages about this topic.

This is only the index of the "Steals Charting" chapter from my exposition about 'Steals Analysis' at eBA ONLINE Clinics. Each principle is fully explained and discussed at that exposition throughout concepts, examples and case studies.

"... eBA Rebound Charting Principles:

A - Steals Dispute Situation:

1. Undisputed steals: 1 or more players from the same team are in the proximity of where the ball is stolen.
2. Disputed steals: the same number of players dispute the ball ( 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc.)
3. Steal under favorable conditions : our team has more players disputing for the ball ( 2 vs 1 , etc.)
4. Steal under unfavorable conditions: our team has less players in the dispute ( 1 vs. 2 , etc. ) ..."

"... B - Steal Type Recording:

1. Stealing from the dribble;
2. Stealing off the pass;
3. Stealing off a post player; ..."

"... C - Steal Analysis:

1. Non-steal forced turnovers: to pressure an offensive player into traveling, a double dribble, a bad pass, or drawing a charge.
2. Steal forced turnovers.
3. Get out position going for a steal: risking negative results such as penetration and open shots;
4. Steal without gambling: do not get out position frequently and do not risks the own defense. ..."

See in these blogs and in our forums the 'steal' topics and the exposition "Basketball Steals Tracking & Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

Studying this thread after looking this play I question myself: it is not necessary to make a difference in the value of Forced and Unforced Turnovers, and between the Unforced ones like this in this clip... something like an "unfundamental" (lack of fundamentals) turnover with the highest reduction value ? ...

Basketball Block Shot Analysis & Statistics Tracking:
With or Without Ball Control is the Question!

Basketball Block Shot Analysis & Statistics Tracking:
With or Without Ball Control is the Question!

The answer was:
A1 goes up for a shot under the basket and the defensive player B2 knocks the ball in the hands of the shooter while they are both in the air, and there is no case of foul. A1 then let the ball fall to the ground before landing back on the court, gathers the ball up and makes a basket.

What is the call for the game and the statistical tracking in case of turnover?

Celtics small forward Paul Pierce has his shot blocked by Charlotte Bobcats power forward Tyrus Thomas during their NBA basketball game in Charlotte, North Carolina. Photo: REUTERS/Chris Keane

By definition (see our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Encyclopedia ) a blocked shot occurs when a defensive player successfully and legally deflects a shot from an offensive player by touching and rejecting the ball on its way to the basket, and before it has reached its highest point, in order to prevent from a field goal.

In order to be a legal action, the  block must occur while the shot is travelling upward. It it is heading downward when the defender hits it, it is ruled a goaltending and counts as a made basket.

We have an altered shot when a blocker changes the shooter shot causing the shooter to miss the basket.

Opponents' field goal percentage vary widely depending on which interior defender is close to the basket. Milwaukee's Larry Sanders is one of the most effective interior defenders in the league: opponents struggle to score when he is near the basket. This not the case with Boston Celtics' David Lee: when he is close to the basket, opponents score at very high efficiencies. (Click on the picture to read the full article by Adam E. Gallagher from  Tropics of Meta). In this Image: by Adam E. Gallagher from  Tropics of Meta presented by eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Group.
Interior Basketball Defense Analitics for the NBA

If the ball is knocked out of the offensive players hands while they are in mid air, then they regain control once they have landed, this is legal.

If the ball is forced out during the time that the player is in the air, the player regains control (while in the air) and lands, it is a travel.
eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking=
Forced Turnover

If the offensive player returns to the floor, holding the ball, and the ball has never left his hands, one of two things are possible:

1) if the defensive player has only one hand on the ball, it is a travel against the offensive player.
eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking=
Forced Turnover.

2) if the defensive player has both hands on the ball it is a jump ball which will be resolved according with the alternate possession rule

The evolution of Tony Parker and Marc Gasol
by George Eddy from FIBA

This Weekend eBA Basketball Magazine
The evolution of Parker from a rail thin but lightning quick teenager into a mature and relentless leader as he passed the age of 30 is simply amazing.

After years of learning important life lessons from Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich, Parker now transmits his savoir faire to his young teammates playing the role of the wise mentor who keeps everybody on the same page.

I have crossed paths with Tony a lot since 1999 when we used to play HORSE and pick-up games with him and his brothers in a Paris gym. ...

Remember, Marc first shined on the international stage when he played an unexpectedly important role in the Final of the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan after Pau was injured in the Semi-Final. In Slovenia, Marc came within one shot of the Final and was named the best center of the competition standing next to...Parker on the podium. In this Picture from melty presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis

This could be seen on Tony's face just after the win over Spain as he shared his immeasurable joy and...relief with his team. ...

About the Efficiency in Different Basketball Possession Start Cases
& the Basketball Training Video in our Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Efficiency in Different Basketball Possession Start Cases

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
In the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System there is a study on the average offensive efficiency in different possession start cases. Is was made by Prof. using data from play-by-plays of 2000 games of the Euroleague from 1988.

The research is presented in the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinics, and give us, among a lot of other analysis elements, the order of the starting of the possessions ordered from highest to lowest offensive efficiency:

01 - Steal,

02 - Offensive Rebound after 2p FG missed,

03 - Offensive Rebound after 3p FG missed,

04 - Defensive Rebound after 2p FG missed,

05 - Opponent non-steal turnover,

06 - Defensive Rebound after 3p FG missed,

07 - FT made,

08 - 2p FG made,

09 - 3p FG made,

10 - Start of quarter,

11 - Defensive Rebound after FT missed.

About the Basketball Game Pace and the Turnovers:
From the same research at eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System about the influence of the 'game pace' on the 'turnover ratios' of individual players, we can infer:

...there is a connected increase in the number of TO due to pace: as pace increases, players/teams get more TO/Min and TO/G.

Therefore we may suppose the sooner your team shoots the ball, the less probably you have a chance for a TO. Or that time of possession is what's mutually related to TO.

But, while the presumption is that a faster pace means more errors and more turnovers, if you shoot the ball before you pass it, you turn the ball over less.

So, generally, turnover rates do not become larger with quicker pace.

In this case, you wouldn't expect players' turnover rates to vary too much.

Many other factors could have an effect upon TO rates/possession used or touch year to year:

 • different players in the same organization

 • modifications to an organization that does not suit a particular player's style

 • injuries (players depending on first step with knee/ankle injuries, and injured wrist, etc.) ...
