in our Basketball Coaching DVD Series

Basketball Coaching DVDs:
Shaka Smart, Virginia Commonwealth University Head Coach: Havoc Pressure Defense

... ' Shaka Smart: Havoc Pressure Defense ' ...

NEW DVD on JUNE 4th, 2013 ~ 77 Minutes
Pressure defense is a critical component of Coach Smart's Havoc style of play. More than just occasionally running a press, Havoc begins with a mindset, a philosophy and values.

With Coach Smart's defensive system, you can trap your opponents anywhere on the court and force them to play at an up-tempo pace. In this instructional video, Coach Smart breaks down the two full-court presses that allowed his team to lead the nation in steals and turnover margin in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. He also shares the five core values that go hand-in-hand with Havoc and have made his teams successful.

About the Basketball Scouters & Statisticians Communities
and Basketball Actuality News Video in our Thursday's Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Basketball Scouters & Statisticians Communities

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
"... For the past recent years, the scouting and statistics communities have feuded like members of rival families. Basketball scouters who evaluate players with their eyes are treated with contempt and the numbers-oriented people are cast as cold, computer-wielding propellerheads with no appreciation for scouting intangibles.

Not surprisingly, the camps have grown so polarized that they have retreated to their respective bunkers rather than engage in open and intelligent debate. Instead of gathering longtime scouts and statistics experts to discuss all the great issues in this arena. ..."

"... It is correct that we have coaches that "are not stat guys", that only trust what they see, and they think they don't need a bunch of numbers to get in the way. Others, use stats in various ways and are many which can speak about a tendex type formula.

Most of us, being in the basketball statistics analysis theme, and specially the analysis area, begin to understand that basketball is a difficult game to quantify, in some degree because of the way the game changes through time, and partially because of the powerful impact of teamwork, with the constant moving interaction of 12 players and the ball.

We are the same people which understand that at some level, we use the available information to better understand the game: no one stat can explain everything, so the combination of the numbers and the plays appreciation, eBA statistics analysis basis, is by this time the correct way. ..."

"... Basketball rates player's defense very badly meanwhile baseball, relatively, has multiple manners in this area. A basketball player may get a lot of blocks and simultaneously be a bad defender. On the other hand, another player may be an excellent man-to-man defender and at the same time don't get a lot of steals.

The Basketball Scouters & Statisticians Communities

Image from Basketball-Statistics.com

A broad set of statistical methods can say us that the player A is better than the player B on offense, but they can't give us definitive elements about those players defensively. Only a good game analyst scouting professional can perform it.

Now, we know that basketball has a lot of difficult areas of quantitative information when we translate a game into statistics. For example, categories as "allowed points - from 2, 3 and PF bonus"; "offensive rebounds allowed"; "turnovers - that aren't steals" and "good and bad personal fouls" - see our complete list of statistical analysis categories here, which are included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, are not accounted in the traditional statistical methods, specially those made at live game time.

Gathering and analyzing those categories of data will give us a sort of information, for example, about how many unguarded shots - no fastbreaks plays - were taken by the opponents, and how many were allowed to us. This kind of info is the correct way in evaluating defense. ..."

"... Don't you think that basketball players have been dehumanized too much by this stats tend ? Ignoring the human side is an adjustment for breakage. Statisticians and scouter must work together: to evaluate a player for purposes of building a team implies a lot more than whether that player can play. Numbers can help with analyzing what a player does on the court, but to build a team not only means numbers. ..."

Basketball Tracking Stats Case Studies ~ Basketball Rebounds Statistics Tracking Case Study

Basketball Tracking Stats Case Studies ~ Basketball Rebounds Statistics Tracking Case Study

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
May 2013 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Basketball Statistics eBA Case Study
About a Basketball Rebounds Statistics Tracking Case Study

" ... A missed shot comes off the rim and bounces along the floor. A1 is in position to pick up the ball, but B5 gains control. However, B5 fouls A1

1. before either can touch the ball;

2. as B5 is the first to touch the ball;

3. after B5 is first to gain control of the ball; or

4. after A1 is first to touch the ball.

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"

Conclusion:

Basketball Statistics Philosophy:

A player should be credited with a rebound only if the player earned that rebound before the ball was dead.
What happened after the ball became dead and what would have happened had the ball not become dead might be different.

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

The statistician should not attempt to decide what would have happened, but should decide only what did happen.
However, if there is doubt about player control, the statistician may assume that there was control.

Sometimes there is doubt about whether a player has gained control of the ball before a certain act takes place. In such cases, the statistician should use the following guidelines.
(a) If the statistician feels there was a possibility of player control, then the play shall be treated as though there was player control.
(b) If the statistician feels there definitely was not a possibility of player control, then it shall be treated as though there was no player control.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

In 1., the ball became dead when the foul was committed. Credit Team A with a dead-ball rebound.

In 2., if B5 gained control before the foul, the official will have indicated that the foul was a player-control foul and B5 would be credited with an individual LONG or CLOSE DISPUTED rebound and charged with a FORCED turnover. If there is no indication
of player control, then credit Team A with a dead-ball rebound.

In 3., credit B5 with an individual LONG or CLOSE DISPUTED rebound and charge him with a FORCED turnover.

In 4., if the statistician thinks that A1 possibly had control before the foul,
credit A1 with an individual LONG or CLOSE DISPUTED rebound. If the statistician thinks that A1 definitely did not have control, credit Team A with a dead-ball rebound.

This Case Study was presented as every 15th. day of each month, on May 15th, 2013 in our eBA Portal: were sent 871 answers, 87 partial answers and 653 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.

"... In the word of basketball, statistical study and analysis is increasingly more important. The most important basketball competition in Spain (ACB) establishes an ssessment ranking by grouping the statistical scores of individuals and teams carrying out detailed scouting studies that focus on the strengths and weakness of the opposition.

This is all part of the weekly training in preparation for games. In short, this onstitutes a tool that demonstrates how highly useful and important modern basketball is. ..."

"... Based on the above ideas, the fundamental aim of this study is to analyse the number of free throws in different time fractions throughout the game and the percentage of successful throws in accordance with the different characteristics and circumstances of the game. ..."

"... With regards to success percentages, a defined tendency was not observed in any of the observed time fractions. However, the success percentage increase in the extra time minutes is striking. ..."

"... We also wanted to compare the success percentages in two more extreme time fractions. Consequently, when comparing the average free throw success rate during the first five minutes of the game with the average rate during the last five minutes, no significant differences were found neither in home teams (79.50 compared to 79.20) nor away teams (78.30 compared to 78.67). ..."

The Free Shot in Basketball: Successes in Every Minute of Game By Carlos J. López Gutiérrez y Manuel G. Jiménez-Torres

"... The fact that no statistically significant differences were found when comparing
the free throw success percentage in different time fractions brings us to question the incidence of some recurring variables for explaining free throw fouls.

For example, we refer to the lack of warm-ups usually characteristics at the beginning of the game or rather the physical fatigue or higher incidence caused by the capacity to control stress when the free shot has direct incidence with the scorer and it game is coming to an end.

Probably, in other lower ACB categories significant differences can be found in the free throw success percentage depending on the game minute or the location of the scorer when
throwing. ..."

"... When the number of free throws in the last quarter is higher than previous quarters, and when there are no differences between the second and third quarters, we can deduce that it is related to the defence to save fouls at the beginning and then over time increase intensity.

This leads to situations of contact (plus fatigue, which causes later defensive actions and a tendency towards foul increase). Whatever the cause, the last quarter sees the most free throws and the worse percentages. ..."

"... We have not found any statistically significant differences when comparing free throw success percentages in different time fractions or when comparing the first and last five minutes of each game.

The above conclusion could bring us to question the incidence of some recurring variable that explain free throw fouls, such as the lack of warm-ups at the start or end of games, physical fatigue or the capacity to control stress when the free throw has a very direct incident on the scorer. ..."

"... In any case, it turned out to be striking that in the extra time period the free shot
success period increased. This could be down to the high level of player concentration and their capacity to control stress in the face of the importance of scoring in this period close to the end of the game. The player is also more fatigued during this period and is more anxious.

In any case, we have observed the need to adapt and personalise free throw training by working on aspects of visual and attention control and trying to control and manipulate cognitive anxiety. ..." Read more ...

A Basketball Technical Foul to an Injured Player
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
A Basketball Technical Foul to an Injured Player

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... A16 does is injured and does not play in the game but while sitting on the bench during the game shouts at the referee and receives a technical foul. How we register this play ? Turnover ? Game Played ?

Which is the rule of this situation and, specially the statistician rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System ? ..."

From the Basketball Rules:
In basketball, a technical foul (also informally known as a "T" or a "Tech") is any infraction of the rules penalized as a foul which does not involve physical contact during the course of play between opposing players on the court, or is a foul by a non-player. The most common technical foul is for unsportsmanlike conduct. Technical fouls can be assessed against players, bench personnel, the entire team (often called a bench technical), or even the crowd. These fouls, and their penalties, are more serious than a personal foul, but not necessarily as serious as a flagrant foul (an ejectable offense in leagues below the NBA, and potentially so in the NBA).

Technical fouls are handled slightly differently under international rules than under the rules used by the various competitions in the United States. First, illegal contact between players on the court is always a personal foul under international rules, whereas in the USA, such contact is, with some exceptions, a technical foul when the game clock is not running and/or when the ball is dead. Second, in FIBA play, players foul out after five total fouls, technical and personal combined.

Head coach Flip Saunders and Rasheed Wallace #36 of the Detroit Pistons watch as official Jack Nies calls a technical foul against a Piston teammate...
Photograph: LIFE

The latter rule is similar to that in college, high school, and middle school basketball in the United States. However, in the NBA and WNBA, players are allowed six personal fouls before being disqualified, and technical fouls assessed against them do not count toward this total. However, unsportsmanlike technicals in the NBA carry a fine, its severity depending on the number of technicals the player has already obtained, and players are suspended for varying amounts of time after accumulating fifteen technicals in the regular season or seven in the playoffs.

In most American competitions, ejection of the offender, be he player, coach, or otherwise, is the penalty for being assessed two technical fouls in a game, if charged directly to him (some technicals committed by a player are charged to the team only). In addition, any single flagrant technical foul, or a disqualifying foul in FIBA, incurs ejection. FIBA rules do not provide for ejection for any number of non-flagrant technicals against a player; however, two technicals on a coach or a third technical on the bench results in his ejection.

Each Shot Related to Game Situation & the Home Performance Advantage or 'ceiling effect'
& the Basketball Training Video in our Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Tracking Each Shot Related to Game Situation and the Home Performance Advantage or 'ceiling effect'

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
The eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System records each shot related to:

 • the game situation (time and score);

 • ball location (sideline or endline);

 • player location ( location of shot in our 15 zones basketball court diagram );

 • type of shot (shot selection);

 • shooting clock (seconds remaining);

 • shot result ( made or missed ) and

 • offensive and defensive alignments for each one of the shots.

The general character and site of the shot attempt can be a manifestation of the stage of difficulty:

1) End-line plays present a bigger menace than sideline out of bounds;

2) In the main, inbounds plays have both inside and outside choices with a condition to keep from performing a 5 second violation;

3) As a whole the first precedence of the defense against end-line out of bounds plays is impeding an easy basket at the rim.

The basketball statistician must knows that the achievement of their objective by the offense or defense returning from a time out in closely contested end game situations are more significant than others - these are about entirely sideline plays

The eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System also records the success rates of a specific team or coach after a timeout, both the offense and defense should are analyzed.

Colorado State fans who live in Fort Collins are riding a Rocky Mountain high as the Rams fed off the energy of the Moby Maniacs—especially the stand-out student sections—and both the players and Head Coach Tim Miles have paid homage to the fans for their support. Yes, Moby Arena has quickly become one of the most difficult places for opponents to play, due to the fans, the size of the venue and the elevation.

Meanwhile field goals and three point shots may vary in location and defensive pressure, a free throw is the same during games as it is in practice every time.

Therefore, can we speak about a relation between free throws and home performance advantage ?

It is possible that every time a college basketball player shoots a free throw before a crowd, social facilitation occurs and that the benefits of being at home or being a better shooting team are held by a home advantage effect.

If this effect occurs, it is possible that poor free throw shooters, for whom the area is non-dominant, may benefit from a home performance advantage or the 'ceiling effect'.

It is possible that free throw shooting is an influential undertaking in the home performance advantage. Although field goals and three point shots be subject to change in accordance with location and defensive pressure, a free throw is the same during games as it is in practice every time.

According to our statistics analysis, in opposition, field goal shooting looks to be an undertaking that can be influential or non-influential while three point shooting looks largely a non-influential undertaking.

The instance of change in shooting aptitude was small in a relative manner. As an option, some players who shows special good skills at three point shooting may reveal an alike benefit. This can be addressed in future studies from the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.

A selected excerpt from the discussions at the eBA Annual Analysis System Clinic Chat about this topic "Basketball Possessions".
