Friday Press Clippings:
Points per Possession Discussion

From HoopCoach.org
By Coach Drew
Download source here: ' Points per Possession Discussion ' by Coach Drew
"... I've been reading up on advance stats a lot the last few weeks and found that apparently I have been tracking points per possession a bit different then the common approach. My method was very simple:
(Points scored * 100) / Possessions
A slightly more advanced approach for finding total possessions:
POSSt = FGAt + 0.44 × FTAt – OREBt + TO
I'm not sure it affected my team a whole lot as I think we got about four offensive rebounds the entire season. Regardless, is anyone else tracking this? What is your formula? ..."
"... The .44 is the factor in the total possessions formula that helps to pretty accurately measure how many possessions were used during the total of FT attempts.
Often a player will get 2 FTAs. Sometimes just 1, sometimes 3. Sometimes it will be a technical foul and not be the end of a possession.
Sometimes a missed FTA won't end the possession because of an offensive rebound or a foul of the offensive rebounder. The historical average for possessions used up is 0.44 × FTAt. ..."
"... It is good to ask about details that don't make obvious sense. Sometimes the answer can be found re-reading a passage (as it could this time) but it is true that sometimes advanced statisticians don't explain all their shorthand and it can get difficult.
There are times I can't follow it all clearly myself and it not always possible to contact the author directly.
Often times though if you step back and ask what is happening in the big picture, what is the main conclusion? you can get something out of an article even if some of the detail is too complicated to follow step by step. ..."
"... We use the points per possession method that Dean Smith spells out in his book. It uses FGA, TO, and Trips to the free throw line (instead of FTA).
This covers all possible outcomes on any given possession.
I don't understand why ORB would be used for anything because that would already be accounted for as a FGA. I suggest looking in Dean Smiths book to get the best picture. ..."
"... I don't see why Offensive Rebounds would be subtracted in any formula trying to calcualte total possessions. Unless the shot doesn't hit the rim, an Offensive Rebound re-starts the shot clock (clearly a new possession). ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Which is the Real Value of a Steal ? ~ Concept & Statistics

Some analysis systems works upon the argument by which steals are the best defensive play there is, and that it's value will show up on the offensive end, based on the theory that steals lead to easy baskets.
Now, the issue is which is the real value of a steal from the point of view that the confirmed and permanent risking for steals costs the defense about as many points defensively ( in open shots and help fouls ) as they get in easy baskets from successfully stealing the ball and converting.
An interesting question and here you have some data for the discussion:
The eBA Basketball Statistics Archives tell us that players who get steals are the most valuable when they are forwards and centers or are players who don't shoot a lot.
Nevertheless, that said, I think that players who get steals, on average, tend to be valuable at EVERY position and careless of how much they shoot.
With reference to those players who are "permanent risking for steals", take into account that players who gamble may also hurt their team, but that does not identify the main part of players who get lots of steals.
And as we stated at the eBA Clinics last year, to analyze team statistics to measure the value of players ONLY with certain attributes may lead to deceptive results.
Read More the exposition "Basketball Steals Analysis" at eBA CLINICS ONLINE, search "basketball steals" in this blog and consult the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.

Friday Press Clippings:
An Introduction to Advanced Basketball Statistics:
Understanding Possession Estimation and the Factors that Control Efficiency

From Burnt Orange Nation
By Reggieball
Download source here: ' An Introduction to Advanced Basketball Statistics: Understanding Possession Estimation and the Factors that Control Efficiency '
by Reggieball
"... Historically, the way we tend to evaluate basketball teams is to look at per game statistics. For instance, we might look at the Big 12 statistics from last season and conclude Nebraska, who allowed 60.5 points per game, and Texas A&M, who allowed 61.3 points per game, were both better defensively than Texas, who allowed 62.2 points per the game.
The chief problem with this sort of analysis is that it ignores the pace at which these teams play. Texas A&M played at an extremely slow pace last season, averaging 62.2 possessions per game. Nebraska played slightly faster, averaging 63.6 possessions per game.
Of these three schools, Texas played at the fastest tempo, averaging 66.9 possessions per game. Nebraska and Texas A&M were among the slowest-paced teams in all of Division I last year, whereas Texas' pace was pretty close to the Division I median of 66.6 possessions per game. ..."
"... If you are convinced that possessions, and not games, ought to be the appropriate way to normalize basketball statistics, then you are ready for the next step. Team performance on offense and defense should be measured as points per possession.
It is useful to break points per possession up a bit further, in order to isolate various elements of offensive (or defensive) performance. In the coming months I will write about some of the ways in which I like to do this, but for now, we will focus on a fairly simple split. Here is an equation ..."
"... Essentially, true shooting percentage is the points scored per shooting opportunity divided by two. The number is divided for two so that it looks like a shooting percentage. Typically many teams and players will have TS% between about 0.5 and 0.6, so the scale is similar to what it common for more traditional field goal percentages.
The problem with true shooting percentage is semantic -- it isn't actually a percentage. For example, TS% can be greater than 1. It can be as high as 1.5. The 0.5 prefactor seems kind of pointless, other than the effort to make this look like a field goal percentage. ..."
"... Then if we take the difference between Texas' ORB - TO and Arizona's ORB - TO, we get an estimate of the difference in shooting opportunities between each team. By this calculation, Arizona is expected to be +2 in FGA + 0.475 x FTA. They were actually +1.
In this case, the discrepancy comes from the fact that Texas had one extra possession than Arizona did in the first half of the game.
Both teams had the same number of possessions in the second half of the game. Note that sometimes this estimate will be off because it is just an estimate, but in this case we have an assignable cause. ..."

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Use of Statistics and the Statistical Analysis of Basketball

"...I am NOT a scientific analyst of the regression and coefficient type. My views and formulas are based upon simple calculations of various statistical categories, weighted in terms of importance, that have been used by basketball coaches for many, many years. ..."
"... Much of what I have done is found at russellratings.com, and I am always interested in any dialogue that can be generated. I will not always understand the machinations of some of the statistical jargon, but I am hopeful that a chapter that includes an honest and fair look at what is currently being done in this arena will be an excellent addition to my manuscript. ..."

"... Basketball is a sport that does not lend itself well to that end. There is nothing more spirited than a debate between Bob Knight and another coach regarding the relative merits of defense versus other factors. It is just a game that lends itself to a lot of options as to how it is played. ..."
"... In that light, if I wanted to better grab the attention of the NBA people, I would focus more on the relative than the absolute in evaluating a player, and I would focus on "players and lineups that can win" as opposed to players that are better or worse than each other. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Basketball Alternate-possession Rule Must Change ? ~ Concept & Statistics

Why the alternate-possession rule must be changed ?
- An inspired defensive effort by a trailing team should not be undone because it's the other team's turn to take possession.
- An official's inability to consistently make a fair toss should not alter the rules of the game.
- The rule really penalizes a great defensive effort. You can make a great defensive play but late in the game Team B forces a jump ball, an alternate possession goes to Team A who scores the goal in the last second to win the game.
- When they try to make the game too fair, they take away the whole reason for competing. It shouldn't be a 'fair' factor. It should be whomever is aggressive enough to get his hands on the ball. That's the unknown about any sport. That's what makes the sport interesting.
Why changing the alternate-possession rule would not be efficient ?
- For the same reason it was established the potential for a toss that gives one team an unfair advantage over the other.
- A late-game jump ball, in an intense sequence, increases the possibility of injury to officials.
- At least some advantage is gained from tying up the ball, even if it is only reversing the possession arrow.
- The alternative is worse. In many instances, one or the other team has a dominant big man who almost always controls the tip.

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
December 2011 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Shot Clock and a Desperation Shot... Case Study
" ... As the shot clock is about to expire, A1 takes a desperation shot. The shot is batted away by B2 just before the shot clock sounds. ...
(a) A5 catches the ball and the referees rule the play dead for the shot-clock violation;
(b) B4 catches the ball and the referees rule the play dead for the shot-clock violation; or
(c) B4 catches the ball and play continues with no shot-clock violation called.
What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"
Conclusion:
Basketball Statistics Philosophy:
A player should not be charged for a shot from the field influenced by the illegal actions of himself or herself, or any teammates or opponents, unless the shot results in a FGM.
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
If the statistician’s opinion is that it is truly a “desperation” shot then there is no a FGA charge. But the statistician must be sure about the previous play situation,
before charging a INDIVIDUAL or a TEAM turnover in this case !
eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:
• In all cases, if the statistician’s opinion is that it is truly a “desperation” shot then there is no FGA, but there is a FORCED ( by the opponent - player or team - defense ! ) TURNOVER, probably charged to A1 or against the Team A depending on the play situation.
Because there is no FGA, there is no rebound and no blocked shot.
• In (c), credit B2 with a Deflection and also credit B4 with a UNFORCED STEAL.
This Case Study was presented as every 1st. day of each month from today, on December 15th, 2011 in our eBA Portal: were sent 972 answers, 46 partial answers and 783 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.
