eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: The Statistics Heuristic Method Concept

Heuristic ( /hjʉˈrɪstɨk/; or heuristics; Greek: "Εὑρίσκω", "find" or "discover") refers to experience-based techniques for problem solving, learning, and discovery.
Where an exhaustive search is impractical, heuristic methods are used to speed up the process of finding a satisfactory solution. Examples of this method include using a "rule of thumb", an educated guess, an intuitive judgment, or common sense.
In more precise terms, heuristics are strategies using readily accessible, though loosely applicable, information to control problem solving in human beings and machines.

A heuristic is a particular technique of directing one's attention in learning, discovery, or problem-solving.
The popularization of the concept is due to the mathematician George Polya, in his book How to Solve It: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method.
It is originally derived from the Greek "heurisko" (ευρίσκω, the verb from which Archimedes's famous exclamation of "eureka" was derived), which roughly means "I found". The term was introduced in the 4th century AD by Pappus of Alexandria.

He also made sure his son was an assistant basketball coach.
In the end, the school's athletic director was the only hero, and the chairman of the university board of trustees committed suicide with his note saying he had "failed St.
Bonaventure. " The Father…the Son…and the Sweet Sixteeen " is an inside look at the scandal and how it happened, and a cautionary tale about the venality of big time
college athletics.

Friday Press Clippings:
Brad Stevens embraces advanced statistics

From College Basketball Nation Blog
By Eamonn Brennan
Download source here: ' Brad Stevens embraces advanced statistics '
by Eamonn Brennan
"... This is nothing new, of course. Butler coach Brad Stevens has openly cited the importance of Ken Pomeroy's web site in past interviews. He's written the foreword in recent editions of Basketball Prospectus.
Only those that haven't been paying attention to Butler's 10-2 record in the past two NCAA tournaments -- culminating in two straight runner-up finishes for the tiny Indianapolis mid-major with the 4,000-student enrollment -- would be surprised to learn that Stevens uses advanced statistics to prepare his teams for victory. ..."
"... Someone's having a laugh there, because I'm pretty sure a body's mass as a measure of its energy has relatively (sorry) little to do with scouting and stopping basketball opponents.
"Ha, you're a nerd, coach." "Yes, I am, and that's why we win." ..."
"... The main takeaway here, other than the nerdy delight one feels at seeing a successful hoops coach talk about basketball statistics so eagerly and fluently, is that advanced statistics aren't just something Internet People do in their free time.
They aren't confined to basketball nerds anymore -- if they ever even were. ..."
"... I'm not sure that needs to be said anymore; there's no real "battle" here, at least nothing like baseball's SABR types seemed to wage for mainstream acceptance for so long. (People quote OPS on SportsCenter now. We've come a long way.)
But if you want to know why Stevens seems so preternaturally prepared, why his teams have frustrated so many in spot situations in the past two NCAA tournaments, why he is regarded as the nation's brightest young basketball mind -- well, that chalkboard photo pretty much sums it up. ..."

"... The 5 seconds closely guarded rule is referred to this action holding the ball, dribbling or not ?

The 5 seconds closely guarded NCAA rule is referred to the action in which the player have 5 seconds to hold the ball, 5 seconds to dribble ( assuming guarded within 6 feet ) and 5 seconds to hold the ball again; e.g. the player can hold for 4, dribble for 4 and hold for 4 seconds with no violation.

Although I'm a passionate basketball fan and Sonics fan, when I was writing the book I wasn't interested in the game per se—who won, who lost, the minutiae of strategy. I was interested in how the game gets talked about. By the end of the season I'd accumulated hundreds of pages of often utterly illegible notes, the roughest of rough drafts. Over the last three years I transformed those notes into this book—a daily diary which runs the length of one team's long-forgotten season and which is now focused, to the point of obsession, on how white people including especially myself) think about and talk about black heroes, black scapegoats, black bodies.
What John Edgar Wideman calls "our country's love/hate affair with the black body" ...

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Over-and-Back Violation ~ Concept & Statistics

"... A question about basketball rules... what is and how must we register the Basketball Over-and-Back Violation ? ... "
The Basketball Over-and-Back Violation is a violation that occurs when the offensive team has brought the ball into the frontcourt, returns the ball into the backcourt once it has positioned itself in the front court: the offensive team crosses the half court line and then crosses back into the back court.
As soon as a player from that team touches it in the backcourt, the ball is dead and is awarded to the opposing team for a throw-in.
American Rule: "Both feet and the ball" - if you are progressing from backcourt ( which includes the centre line ), you retain back court status until all three "points" are in the front court.
( This affects the over-and-back rule as well as the 8/10 second rule. )
European Rule: In FIBA, if you are touching the front court, you have front court status, but it is also possible to be simultaneously in both courts ( which is usually a problem if you have the ball ).
Examples:
1.1) A player is dribbling the ball in his backcourt . While continuing to dribble, the player steps with one foot into the front court.
Question: Has the 8/10 second count ended?
Answer: Yes. The player has front court status.
Q: Has the player committed an "Over-and-Back" violation ?
A: Not yet.
1.2) Continuing the above example, the player lifts the foot in the front court and resumes dribbling entirely in the back court.
Q: Has the player committed an "Over-and-Back" violation?
A: Yes. Once a player progressing from the back court to the front court touches the front court with a foot or the ball, he must proceed into the front court with his next manoeuvre.
[Note: The action described above is legal in US rules. However, the 8/10 second count would still be proceeding.]
2.1) A player, whose team has the ball in the back court, receives a pass with one foot on either side of the centre line. He stands there for a few seconds (and does not pivot).
Q: Has the player committed an "Over-and-Back" violation ?
A: Not yet.

Photograph: ESPN Women College Basketball
2.2) Continuing the above example, the player passes the ball to a teammate in the
a.-) front court, or b.-) backcourt. The receiving player touches the ball.
Q: Has the player committed an "Over-and-Back" violation ?
A: No in a.-), Yes in b.-).
2.3) Instead of passing, as in 2.2), the player chooses to dribble towards the front court.
Q: Has the player committed an "Over-and-Back" violation ?
A: No. As long as the player is progressing forward, the intent of the rule is being upheld.
3.0) A player holds the ball in the front court near the centre line. He 1) puts down a dribble, with the ball touching the centre line; or 2) steps partially on the centre line with one foot; or 3) brushes the ball against a teammate who is standing in the back court.
Q: Has the player committed an "Over-and-Back" violation ?
A: Yes in all cases. In 3.1), it is not a violation until the ball rebounds into the player's hand (or a teammate, for that matter). On a dribble, that will happen pretty quickly. In 3.2) and 3.3), the violation is called immediately. The centre line is considered to be part of the back court. [This case is the same in both FIBA and US rules.]
eBA Statistical Tracking= Finally, in all the cases, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register an Unforced Turnover, unless there is an opponent player influence – a close defense on the center line, by example – in this case a Forced Turnover is registered.

Don't be like Mike... Mike ! Michael Jordan should probably not be like Mike anymore. Yes, he's the greatest of all time, but there comes a point when you have to move
on regardless of what you can still offer or teach. I side with those who say MJ should stay retired.
But it's a good debate and I could see where Jordan's recent words and actions
could be construed as evidence of a man who wants to return to the NBA. I just dont picture it happening again.
I don't know what Michael Jordan will do when he turns 50, but I have to believe he won't go quietly into old age as the author seems to agree...!

"... Basketball is part of the tapestry of life. On the court five people must work together in harmony, just like we all should work together in harmony to make the world a better place.
Sharing is good on the basketball court and in life. Being selfish is bad. ..."
"... But is Derrick Rose really an effective, efficient player? Before the advent of advanced basketball statistics we would have just had to rely on how we felt watching Derrick Rose play.
And like I said, Derrick Rose is fun to watch. No one can deny that. ..."
"... In the 2010-11 season, Rose attempted exactly 31 shots in a game once--and the Chicago Bulls lost. They also lost three of the five games in which Rose attempted exactly 27 shots.
The Chicago Bulls were pretty good last year.
They had the best record in the NBA (62-20). But four of their losses came when Rose attempted either 27 or 31 shots. ..."
"... I know that advanced basketball statistics make some of you feel cranky but true shooting percentage is not only an advanced basketball statistic but it contains the word "true."
If you are against using true shooting percentage to rank basketball players then you really are a primitive person who has not learned to value truth. ..."
"... But, wait a minute. Didn't Isiah Thomas win two championships? Didn't Allen Iverson carry a thin Philly roster to the NBA Finals in 2001? Derri has all of the answers to your simple questions. Thomas' Detroit teams were successful because of Dennis Rodman.
Derri notes that Rodman was a greater player than even Michael Jordan.
Rodman had a DUM number of 666! Rodman's DUM number was more than three times larger than Einstein's IQ. That means Rodman was a basketball genius! Similarly, Iverson's Philadelphia teammate Dikembe Mutombo had a DUM number of 319.
Mutombo was not quite the basketball Einstein that Rodman was but Mutombo was at least at the Kurt Godel
level. ..."

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
Ending Dribble with Both Feet Off of the Floor...
Both feet off of the floor ?
Last season this case was officiated well and consistently; consequently, it removed existing confusion as to what was legal.
This year there appears to be an inconsistent understanding of Rule 4-65.3 and as a consequence, the rule is not being officiated correctly.
As a reminder, when a dribbling player initiates a jump, ends his dribble with both feet off the floor and lands simultaneously on two feet (jump stop), he is permitted to establish a pivot foot.
When there is doubt as to how many feet were off the floor when the dribble ended, the official shall assume that the dribble ended with both feet off the floor (which is most often the case); consequently, the player, after executing the jump stop, is allowed to establish a pivot foot.
When the official does not allow the player to pivot after a jump stop, he shall be absolutely sure that player ended his dribble with only one foot off the floor.

The Basketball Personal Fouls eBA Analysis ~ Concept & Statistics

"... With the exception of the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, why fouls are generally not even considered in evaluating and efficiency formulas by the other statistical systems ? ... "
There is a common misconception in the other basketball statistics analysis systems, specially at the live-game statistics, and personal fouls are generally not even considered when evaluating a player's talent.
This error or "statistics myth" raised because the false concept that it is assumed everyone commits those personal fouls and they are unavoidable.
Even, a foul means a defender has been caught out of position and has damaged his team by adding to a number that could eventually lead to free possessions via the Bonus.
But the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System have a rating of personal foul made and received and qualify each one as "good", "neutral" or "bad": the rating is explained in eBA Clinics Online and discussed in the "Statistics & Statisticians Board" in the forum, which is reserved for registered members.
Something like when 2 free throws are missed the foul actually becomes a positive for the fouling team much like a steal. If only one free throw is made it becomes a tie, nothing lost or gained. When 2 out of 3 free throws are made on the average the free throws become a negative for the fouling team.
The situation in which the personal foul was committed, plays an important role in this personal fouls eBA
analysis ......

A New Thursday... A new Basketball DVD eBA DVICE...
Tom Izzo:
Man-to-Man Offense
and Counters to Crush Defensive Adjustments
By Tom Izzo
Entering his 17th year directing the Spartan program, head coach Tom Izzo has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including the 2000 NCAA National Championship,
six regular-season Big Ten Championships, two Big Ten Tournament titles, six Final Four appearances, four National Coach of the Year awards and a Big Ten-best 14 straight NCAA
Tournament appearances.
These accomplishments, however, are not what make Izzo one of the best in the game, but rather it is his insatiable desire to accomplish more.
With a career record of 383-161, it's easy to see that Izzo knows how to win, but he also knows how to win the right way. In his 16 years directing the Spartan program, 81 percent of
his players who completed their eligibility also left with a degree. In the last 12 years, 35 Spartans have received their undergraduate degrees.

As compelling as this historic game was, so were the backgrounds of the teams involved. Kentucky was thought to be years away from a Final Four berth, but head coach Rick Pitino and his punishing game plan resurrected a scandal-plagued program. Duke, coming off a national championship, was a perennial powerhouse whose driven players were convinced another title was theirs.
Wojciechowski, a senior reporter for ESPN.com, traces the two teams’ path to each other and the game’s impact on its participants, but little space is devoted to the hypothesis promised in the title. We never learn how this legendary tilt influenced college basketball or why it’s the defining game in an intensely popular sport.
Though fans of both colleges will lap up the locker room tales and glory day remembrances, Wojciechowski’s effort reads too much like a prodigiously reported magazine article.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out

How to make a statistical calculation of the player's missed playing time ascribable to fouls ?
Is there in the the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System some data about the player utilization and substitution set of rules in the foul trouble case ? That means to say, when they are sent to the bench and after which foul number ?
To calculate missed playing time ascribable to fouls, we must base our analysis in the following assumptions about player usage and substitution patterns:
In FIBA & NBA:
No change when a player commits his first foul.
Committing his second a player foul would be replaced and have to wait at the bench until the half of the second quarter.
A player committing his third foul would be replaced and would be a bench player until the third quarter.
With the critical (in FIBA) fourth foul committed a player would be replaced and have to sit until the beginning of the the fourth quarter.
In NBA:
A player committing his fifth foul would have to be out of the game until the half of the fourth quarter.

Now, how often do players foul out of a game ? When the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul happens ? Which percentage of the players with the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul are fouled out ?
- 49% of the 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA come with about 3 minutes left in the game: remember to consider, 40 minutes in FIBA and 48 in the NBA !
- 82% of all players who perpetrate a 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA do not foul out.
This is reasonable from the moment the studies from eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System demonstrates that even the most players having a tendency to foul lose only a few minutes per game because of their foul trouble. But they play the great majority of their minutes near the danger of fouling out.
The analysis of the different types of Foul Trouble, are studied in the eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking Clinic.
