At this point in his life Chris has to be as lucky an addict as there is who has returned from the hell hole chemicals can take one. Every user feels he/she is the exception to the rule about any addiction but there are truly no exceptions unless one admits to the problem before they end up in death as a result of drug use. |
Hopefully Chris has seen the light and will stay clean but I am sure he knows this as he battles with his addiction every day of his life. Good luck Chris and stay the path you are presently following. If you do you can have a posiitve influence on all those you come in contact with.

Friday Press Clippings:
Basketball study refutes science methods

From Yale Daily News
By Clarissa Marzan
Download source here: ' Basketball study refutes science methods ' by Clarissa Marzan
"... It may not surprise many people that college basketball statistics have very little to do with life and death in the wild. ..."
"... Research conducted by Robert Warren, postdoctoral associate for the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, has found that the theoretical models of species survival used widely among ecologists are useless.
Warren and his team of researchers used college basketball statistics to argue that any large-scale set of statistics will produce an ecological pattern that does not apply to real-life communities. ..."
"... The team looked at the win-loss records of 327 NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams from 2004-2008, a total of 20,000 games. Each team was treated as a species that is part of a college basketball community, similar to a jungle or river system.
A team’s win or loss would be analogous to an individual’s survival or death. Warren said the basketball analogy was a very good fit for their experiment because it supported existing assumptions about ecological communities. ..."
"... But the paper’s findings revealed that the exact same win-loss pattern appeared whether or not a basketball team’s outcomes were driven by random selection or by competitive exchange.
The results supported the team’s hypothesis that scientists can’t infer anything from model-based theoretical patterns, Warren said. ..."
"... Warren — a self-proclaimed “college basketball nut” — said he decided to use college basketball outcomes because of the way competition drives wins and losses in sports.
He explained that a few good teams dominate the basketball community while many more bad teams struggle to improve, an occurrence that is seen in nature among competing species. ..."
"... But Yosefa Greenfield, captain of the Yale women’s basketball team, said she believes it is reasonable to link basketball and ecological diversity because dominant teams possess more successful traits, as dominant species do in the wild. ..."
"... “The better teams usually have better coaches, better players, better facilities …” she said. “We have to adapt to who we are playing [and] use different strategies to play different teams in order to win.” ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Foul Committed on Missed / Made Shot

When a foul is committed on the shot ( made or missed ), how does the shot attempt get averaged into your field goal percentage ?
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
Two Situations in this case:
1.- If a foul is committed on a shot and the shot is made: the shot attempt GET averaged in the field goal percentage as a "Field Goal Made" and the possession is ended and counted. We have a Foul Made and a Foul Received, too.
2.- If a foul is committed on a shot and the shot is missed: the shot attempt DOES NOT GET averaged in the field goal percentage, from the moment the player receives two or three free-throws from the line and the possession is not ended.

For the possessions count in this situation: if the last free-throw of a serial ( of 2 or 3 ) is made the possession end with a "Up to the Line Made" for shooter's team ( see Global Basketball Encyclopedia for the terminology ).
If the last free-throw of a serial ( of 2 or 3 ) is missed, the possession end with a Defensive Rebound. An Offensive Rebound gives, you know, a second chance option.
Foul Made and Foul received are counted, too.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Some Reflections about 3-pointers & 2-pointers ASSIST Percentage

"... how to estimate the number of assisted 3-point field goals and 2-point field goals for a team, or a percentage of how many assisted field goals are 3-pointers and how many 2-pointers according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."
The eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System refers to "assisted %" in the following concept:
the percentage of the own shots on which an assist was recorded.
In another systems, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System doesn't uses predictions, you'll find the formulas to predict the assisted field goal percentage employing the "assist share" factor.
So looking over the effective Assisted % for players - the percentage of their own shots on which an assist was recorded - we can see players creating its own shot from a top of 90% +/- (generally the forwards) to an opposite end of a 20% +/- (generally the guards, and specially the point guard).

From the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System archive, we infer by means the play-by-play register that 58,6 % of made 2-pointers and 75,6% of made 3-pointers are assisted.

Advanced statistics and the democracy of talent

From Magic Basketball
By Danny Nowell
Download source here: ' Advanced statistics and the democracy of talent ' By Danny Nowell
"... Where am I going with this? I’ve been thinking a lot about advanced statistics recently in the wake of the 2011 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, which I was not fortunate enough to attend but which the TrueHoop Network covered extensively.
The Sloan Conference is the zenith of the advanced statistical approach to sports today, and it draws some of the smartest people covering or fielding sports teams in the world. ..."
"... For several years now, I’ve been a devotee–if a lackadaisical one–of this sort of sports analytics. I didn’t do so hot in Calculus in high school, but I do care a lot more about efficiency than pure scoring, and I believe in things like Pythagorean record as mathematical ways to ascertain the quality of a team considered apart from the quirks of day-to-day game developments. ..."
"... Like I’ve said, I love the analytical and statistical approach to think about basketball. But I am made a little uneasy by the widening gap between the practice and the analysis of the game. Let me put this dangerously, in a way that could easily be taken out of context (I hope I never write those words on the internet ever again):
I wonder if hedge fund managers and sabermetricians can even help but obscuring the spirit of basketball in their attempts to quantify the product. ..."
"... The assumption at the heart of advanced statistics is that it is best to look many times at a basketball game to ascertain how to best succeed at the goal of outscoring your opponent.
To find who is most efficiently either scoring or denying points, to recognize skills that are harder to see before the gunsmoke clears, like Chuck Hayes’ incredible post defense.
To me, this is a business approach to basketball, and it is not wrong. ..."
"... Here’s my fear: People like me are drawn to advanced analysis, in some small part, because it compartmentalizes the game into something I can have a hand in, can process.
I will never wake up as enormous and gifted as an NBA star, but I can diligently apply the full scope of my MacBook to figure out how to “maximize” their gifts. ..."
"... Because in the end, the best basketball is about watching as much as it is about winning. It’s a celebration of rare genius just as much as it is about the bottom line of scores and efficiencies.
By all means, then, let’s use the tools we have to think about it better, to question our appreciations and sharpen our tastes, but without letting it crowd our appreciation of even the flawed moments. ..."

Carolina Basketball: A Century of Excellence By Adam Lucas With Foreword by Dean Smith, and Afterword by Roy Williams North Carolina State loyalists might take offense, but Adam Lucas' Carolina Basketball focuses exclusively on one team and it isn't the Wolfpack. Like NCS, North Carolina University has a century-long basketball tradition. (As Lucas notes, it didn't begin propitiously: In its first season, the Tarheels were forced to request the return of the team's stolen basketball.) |
Boasting six national championships and scores of Hall of Fame coaches and players, Carolina Basketball has come a long way from the first season--when the campus
newspaper published a notice asking an unknown culprit to return the team's basketball.
With stories, sidebars, and over 200 photos, this 256-page history covers the first hundred years of one of college basketball's greatest teams.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Offensive Efficiency without Time Played

"... Is there any statistic which ignores playing time and focuses purely on player's offensive efficiency ? ..."
The "Offensive Rating" developed by Dean Oliver, author of Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis, just ignores playing time and focuses purely on player's offensive efficiency. Offensive rating only deals with offense.
Although basketball is obviously about more than just playing offense, offensive rating may be one of the best basketball statistics out there.
Offensive rating is points produced per 100 possessions. The NBA league average offensive rating in 2006 was 106.
The rating includes all aspects of a player's offensive production, including stats such as assists, offensive rebounds, and free throws.
A very complex formula is used to calculate offensive rating.
For more information, check out Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis.

On madness ~ About Advanced Statistics to Better Understand Basketball

From The Chronicle
By Alex Fanaroff
Download source here: ' On madness ~ About Advanced Statistics to Better Understand Basketball ' By Alex Fanaroff
"... Using databases from previous years, some of the Internet stats gurus can use the score and time remaining of a given game to estimate each team’s chances of winning.
The more advanced models take into account the relative strength of each team to determine that, for instance, Duke had nearly a 100 percent chance to beat Hampton after the Blue Devils took a 16-4 lead five minutes into the game. ..."
"... The point, which my friend apparently had been ineloquently trying to make, is that probabilities are essentially meaningless when predicting the outcome of a single event. Perhaps if Duke played Arizona 100 times, and led by six at halftime in each one of them, then the Blue Devils would win 91 of those games.
But they only played once, and Arizona won that one. ..."
"... Modern medical education is focused on evidence. We are taught that, whenever possible, we should seek out a study to help us determine our patients’ diagnosis or prognosis, and that we should support our treatment decisions in the same way.
These studies may follow a group of patients—half of whom receive a new drug and half of whom receive a placebo—and report on how many of each group achieved some specified outcome, like survival without having a heart attack or number of months before cancer relapse. ..."
"... This information is, of course, essential. It enables us, as doctors, to plan for our patients’ future and to choose the best course of action.
But our patients only live one life, and as such are only one of our millions of data points. Someone, after all, has to be that one in a million. ..."
"... The NCAA Tournament plays out this process on a smaller, but more public (and less important) stage. Duke had a 91 percent chance to win—but lost.
Using similar statistical measures, Virginia Commonwealth had a 12-in-10,000 chance to reach the Final Four at the start of the Tournament—but reached the Final Four anyway. ..."
"... But it’s the space between prediction and reality where March Madness lies.
And although it would be nice to have more certainty in medicine, there’s no escaping life’s unpredictability.
All we can do is embrace the madness. ..."

Statistician's Digest: Matchup Probabilities ~ Applicability & eBA System Formula
Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Matchup Probabilities ~ Applicability & eBA System Formula

Raymond Cheong designed a computer ranking system (CRS) - see it at
www bme.jhu.edu/ - to predict the outcome of a hypothetical matchup between two basketball teams. The CRS relies on the observation that average score margin is highly correlated to the ability to win, but that average score margin can be adjusted for strength of schedule and random variations in day-to-day ability.
The CRS gives the expected score difference in a hypothetical matchup, and assuming Gaussian variation in day-to-day ability, gives a closed formula for the probability one team will defeat another. This system could be easily adjusted for other sports, but is particularly suited for NCAA Division I men’s basketball because of the large number of games played and the finely graded scores.
The two-thirds winning record of home teams is often cited as evidence that a home court advantage exists. However, the HCA controlled for differences in home and away team abilities is zero. This is partially accounted for by the trend that strong teams invite weak teams in the first half of the season to warm up for conference play.
On the other hand, the Home Court Advantage calculated from paired home-away games is 3-4 points, suggesting the HCA is real. Raymond Cheong currently do not have a satisfying explanation for the discrepancies between these analyses.
On balance, this evidence neither confirms nor denies that the HCA exists, but at minimum that if an HCA is included in a CRS the way it is calculated must be carefully evaluated - see www bme.jhu.edu/ -.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Basketball Traveling Forced & Unforced Turnovers
... If a player has not dibbled yet. Jumps in the air and drops the ball and starts to dribble after landing: is this traveling ? Turnover ? How this play is registered according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis ? ...
The Rule= It is traveling. The player must pass or attempt a try for goal after leaving the floor. It is illegal to move the pivot foot before starting a dribble .
eBA Statistical Registration= We register 'Turnover', forced or unforced depending upon the opponent action.
You can consult this Video Case Study in the Basketball Statistics Forums with the Traveling Rule !

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Some Reflexions about the Basketball Defensive Rebound Efficiency

"... Talking about turnovers, for example, you might hear someone say, "Our team perpetrated 18 turnovers. That's not very good."
It might not be, but you'd have to know more about the way the game was played to reach that conclusion. 18 turnovers against a slow-down team would be awful. 18 turnovers against a quick-pace squad would be accomplishable. ..."
"... There's a stat called 'defensive rebound efficiency' that is used in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System -- it measures the amount of defensive rebounds taken down from missed shots. There's a similar idea we apply in eBA as 'offensive rebound efficiency', which simply measures the amount of available offensive rebounds that a team gather.
One area where that stat breaks down, however, is that it's hard to take free throws into account just by looking at the box score because there's no way to know which missed shots could result in an offensive rebound.
Therefore, when the eBA System register the equations with the "trips to the line", this problem is solved. ..."

Friday Press Clippings:
Miami Heat’s recent losses troubling, but hardly conclusive By Dan Le Batard

Download source here: ' Miami Heat’s recent losses troubling, but hardly conclusive ' By Dan Le Batard
"... I’m a sports agnostic. I’m not much of a believer in the unseen, in things like intangibles. But I’m not an atheist about them, either.
I just believe that odd things happen all the time in sports, a single bounce or call or game changing everything, and I usually don’t see that as proof of anything unseen except randomness, ..."
"... But I understand why people would wonder now about the Miami Heat’s mental toughness as inexplicable losses stack up, the locker room weeps and the national narrative from a laughing America becomes about an inability to win close games. ..."
"... “Yeah, but he’s like your grandfather,” one NBA player told me. “Your grandfather sees you once in a while. He spoils you. He enjoys you.
Then he gives you back to Daddy, and that’s who has to discipline you and get your respect daily. How can Spoelstra teach them how to get to success if he’s never had it?” ..."
"... Three healthy and motivated stars, trying very hard to be unselfish, are losing close games at home to decent but not great teams. New York, Orlando and Chicago are all second tier. Losing at home when you have the more talented team doesn’t happen that way that much in the star-powered NBA meritocracy, though it happened to the defending champion Lakers just a few months ago.
The media feeds then, and it engulfs the players in questions inside and outside the locker room, everything from “Is this team a fraud?” to James himself having to wonder quietly, “What have I done with my career? Did I make a mistake joining up with these guys?” ..."
"... One of the oddest statistics in sports last year was that the Packers never trailed by more than one touchdown. One-score games tend to be pretty random – sometimes the Dolphins beat the Super Bowl Packers by a field goal in overtime, sometimes they lose to the Super Bowl Steelers because the refs blew a call – but our need for explanations is forever assigning character traits to winners and losers in small sample sizes based on random results.
It doesn’t make good television if Trent Dilfer, paid and asked to explain, shrugs his shoulders and says, “I don’t know.” So instead he said, when the Packers were struggling with injuries and losses earlier in this year, that the team had no soul. ..."
"... Can formed and great players be as effective and efficient when asked to change?
Riley laughed when I asked him the question. He has never had to ask a great player to change. Why would he? But what he has before him now, what he built, doesn’t have a lot of precedent.
I asked Riley — genius, mastermind, legend — how you get a formed player to change.
And his response was the honest and correct answer to a lot of the toughest questions in sports.
“I don’t know,” he said. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Right Analysis of the Wrong Basketball Box Scores & the Team Player

... Formulas and more formulas.... but pay attention to this old Box Score here used in the eBA Annual Basketball Statistics Clinics as a wrong example: the Euroleague's 2006/07 1st. game was played with the game Joventut Badalona 79 vs. Panathinaikos 82....
Joventut Badalona: 8 Steals and 26 Turnovers
Panathinaikos: 14 Steals and 15 Turnovers......
Somebody can explain me how Badalona steals only 8 balls from the 15 Pana's turnovers ? and viceversa ?
I hope that at total points made they didn't messed up....
First of all, as you say, we use that old box score, as an example of the mistakes the statisticians do on the real time stats work !
You are right: if Badalona turnover 26 balls, "somebody" must recuperate them: an opponent [layer or the opponent team.
We said in Statistics doesn't tell the whole story" that statistics in real time loose reality with the quick pace of the modern basketball, specially after the 24 seconds rule: is very convenient to read those message before going on., as you say, we use that old box score, as an example of the mistakes the statisticians do on the real time stats
work !

Now, we'll do it by parts, the analysis of the box scores is included in the eBA ONLINE Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis Clinic, including my formula to "match" all those numbers shortage: in your question, if Badalona turnover 26 and Pana steals 14, where are the another 12 steals ?
lst. step: are the blocked shots included into the steals totals ( although we know that not every block shot implies a steal and ball control ) ? No.
How we see it ? See the following player's lines Flis, Gaines and Betis from Badalona: they have one blocked shot made and zero steals.
I'll go on with the answer, but it is very useful to go eBA ONLINE to study the complete analysis.
These statisticians errors are currently solved by applying once again in a wrong way, the "Team Player" line, constantly used abusively... but this the thematic of another message.

Life and Sports Motivational Videos:
'Diana Nyad Speaks from her Heart' by Diana Nyad
In 1979, Diana Nyad stroked her way to the longest swim in history, for both men and women. The distance was 102.5 miles--from the island of Bimini to the Florida shore--and that incredible record still stands today. Diana Nyad was front page news throughout the Western world, the lead story for Walter Cronkite on the CBS Evening News and a frequent guest of The Tonight Show.
After a failed attempt due to weather in 2010, Diana Nyad is once again trying to swim the 103 miles between Cuba and Florida this August.
For ten years (1969-1979) Diana Nyad was the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world. She broke numerous world records, including the 50-year-old mark for circling Manhattan Island in 1975.
Diana was honored with her induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2003. In 1986, Diana Nyad was inducted into the National Women's Sports Hall of Fame.
Over the past twenty years, Diana Nyad has earned a reputation as a riveting public speaker. She combines her talent for dramatic story-telling with a natural sense of humor and a charismatic stage presence.
Diana Nyad is the author of Other Shores, Basic Training, and Boss of Me: The Keyshawn Johnson Story. She also writes frequently for The New York Times.
Diana Nyad is heard by over eight million people each week on National Public Radio. She is a columnist for All Things Considered and is the sports business reporter for the award-winning show Marketplace. Diana has twice won the "Miller Light National Journalism Award".
On television, Diana Nyad appears on the prestigious CBS News Sunday Morning program where she delivers thought-provoking commentary. Previously, Diana was the Senior Correspondent for Fox Sports News, investigating stories such as the use of performance enhancing drugs by athletes and reporting live from such sporting events as the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, writing and producing her own stories.
From 1989-1992, Diana Nyad hosted her own show on CNBC, One on One with Diana Nyad where she interviewed the likes of Ed Bradley and Julia Child and where she garnered a reputation as a skilled and passionate interviewer.
While an announcer with ABC's Wide World of Sports, Diana Nyad covered three Olympic Games, the New York City Marathon, the Ironman Triathlon, and dozens of other events around the globe.
Diana Nyad is fluent in French, German, and Spanish. She never uses notes -- she speaks from her heart and her audiences are both riveted and inspired.
Prior to her Fox assignment, Diana Nyad was host of all foreign documentaries on the Outdoor Life Network, traveling to Africa for the series The Great Cats of the World. Capitalizing on her background as an adventurer extraordinaire, she swam with 100-ton Right whales in Patagonia and kayaked over 40-foot waterfalls in Borneo.
Diana Nyad is a board member of World T.E.A.M. Sports, an organization that puts able-bodied and disabled athletes together for unique sporting adventures around the world. In January of 1998, Diana and her teammates bicycled the 1,200 miles from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam--perhaps the biggest step toward full reconciliation since the war. The documentary film of that reconciliation ride Vietnam: Long Time Coming won the Emmy in 1998.
Diana Nyad is a Hall of Famer at both her college (Lake Forest College, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa) and her high school (Pine Crest School).

Basketball Full Season Per Minute Statistics don't Round
"... When a player is on the floor for 3 minutes and 31 seconds, the official boxscore enumerate it as 4 minutes.
How the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register the influential impact on the per-minute numbers when multiplied throughout the whole season have those lost 30 seconds ? ..."
First of all, there is an open topic about "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board where I'll continue the discussion. But after going there, here you have some thoughts about:
One or some short term data analysis will be determined by random chance. We have studied this issue at the eBA Clinics Chats, and reached to the conclusion that the full season stats don't round game by game, so it's a reasonably exact parameter.
It is assumed that throughout a full season there are as many round-downs as round-ups which would take out significant error or bias by amount of time played but there might be a bit of noise in outlying player game logs.
The discussion continues in the topic: "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board.

Every professional basketball player had to endure hours of practice in every fundamental of the game in order for the action to become automatic. The skills required for dribbling, passing and shooting have to be practiced and perfected in order to succeed in the sport. |
Seeking to devise an indoor activity since the Massachusetts winters were bitterly cold, Dr. James Naismith used a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals, which later developed into the “second fastest game in the world” after ice hockey.
Basketball comprises of two teams of five players each with the goal of getting the ball across a rectangular court using combinations of dribbles, passes and sprinting to the opponent’s side of the court. The ball is then shot into a basket elevated ten feet off of the ground in order to score points.
