Basketball ~ Optimal Aim Points for Bank Shots By Dr. Chau M. Tran

From Science Daily
By Dr. Chau M. Tran
Download source here: ' Basketball ~ Optimal Aim Points for Bank Shots ' by Dr. Chau M. Tran and Taylor M. Adams
"... The basketball is in your hands. The score is tied and there are only a few seconds left on the clock. You have the ball about 10 feet away from the basket on the right side of the court, just outside the free-throw lane.
It's decision time: Is it best to try a direct shot to win the game on a swish? Or do you use the backboard and bank home the winning basket? ..."
"... New research by engineers at North Carolina State University show that you had a better chance of scoring that particular game-winning bucket with a bank shot than with a direct shot. ..."
"... The results show the optimal aim points make a "V" shape near the top center of the backboard's "square," which is actually a 24-inch by 18-inch rectangle which surrounds the rim.
Away from the free-throw lane, these aim points were higher on the backboard and thus further from the rim.
From closer to the free-throw lane, the aim points were lower on the backboard and closer to the rim. ..."
"... 'Basketball players can't take a slide rule out on the court, but our study suggests that a few intuitive assumptions about bank shots are true,' says Dr. Larry Silverberg, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at NC State and the lead author of a paper describing the research. ..."
"... The researchers made a few assumptions while conducting the study. They used a men's basketball, which is slightly bigger and heavier than a women's basketball; launched the simulated shots from 6, 7, and 8 feet above the ground; and imparted 3 hertz of backspin -- which means three revolutions per second -- on the shots. ..."
"... The research was published in the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports. Lecturer Dr. Chau M. Tran and undergraduate student Taylor M. Adams co-authored the paper with Silverberg.
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is part of NC State's College of Engineering. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Commentaries and Outcomes of our Research about the Rebounding Rating

We'll have a look to some interesting commentaries and outcomes of our research about the Rebounding Rating:
• after missed three points shots from the left or right corners the ball returns to those zones in a figure of the 75%;
• after missed two points or three points shot from the middle returns to the same area in a figure of the 85%;
• "in the paint" ( A3 ) shots result in more undisputed rebounds ( B1 );
• the highest offensive rebound rate occurs with three-pointers which rebound falls close to the basket;
• a great percentage of the second chance points are from offensive rebounds after two-points jumpers from outside ( A2 );
• three pointers, particularly from the corners and the center, lead to more intermediate ( D2 ) and open ( D1 ) rebounds;
• the former examples give important information to statisticians and coaches when the outcomes establish probable directions of the ball after bouncing;
• when in B1 we chart how many players are in the ball area, we must analyze of those players how many tried to dispute the rebound;

• in general terms, we can say that 34% of the rebounds are undisputed ( B1 ), 32% are disputed ( B2 ), 21% are favorable ( B3 ) and 13% are unfavorable ( B4 );
• we must include in our analysis the situations of the players posting up on the right side when the ball bounces to the left and the blocking out position;
• when we analyze undisputed rebounds ( B1 ): help on defense and number of players the offense send to the glass are items to record;
• any new analysis and added category to this research must take in account that rebounding involves a wide range of scenarios and is not just jumping and timing, but also positioning, blocking out, evaluating the flight of the ball and the credit to the received help from the teammates.

Dr. J is no stranger when it comes to the business and politics of sports.
It wasn't that long ago when the best player in the ABA league (Dr. J) helped bring the "Above The Rim" style street ball onto the professional courts of the NBA.
It's safe to say that the Dr. himself helped to shape the NBA into the high flying and mind dazzling dunking highlight reel that it's become today.
If it wasn't for Dr. J, The Vince Carter's, Lebron James's, and even Michael Jordan's may never have had the chance to bedazzle the crowd with their over the top superman"esque" dunks that have made the NBA what it is today, a profitable business

They all got their professional starts in the American Basketball Association. The NBA may have won the financial battle, but the ABA won the artistic war. Loose Balls is, after all these years, the definitive and most widely respected history of the ABA... |
With its stress on wide-open individual play, the adoption of the 3-point shot and pressing defense, and the encouragement of flashy moves and flying dunks,
today's NBA is still -- decades later -- just the ABA without the red, white and blue ball.
Loose Balls by Terry Pluto is, after all these years, the definitive and most widely respected history of the ABA. league's nine seasons.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Some Reflections about the Basketball Assists Statistical Registration

A pass is made and the player is then fouled in the act of shooting, and makes his free-throw. Does the passer get an assist ?
For our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, which the principal address of the work is the COACH, the answer is absolutely: YES !
But there are two systems on considering the assist or not:
There are some stats-men that gives the passer an assist ONLY if the fouled player converts the first free throw, but cancels the assist if he misses it, no matter what happens with the other.

Decision Theory In Basketball - Why Russell Westbrook Should Pass More To Kevin Durant

From Science 2.0

"... Then they compare this with a concept called “allocative efficiency”, or the benefit of equally distributing the ball to any of the five players on the court and also “dynamic efficiency”, or deciding whether to “use” the possession by taking a shot or “continuing” the possession by making a pass.
As the shot clock winds down, the marginal difficulty of a shot considered will need to rise or they risk getting no shot off before the 24 seconds expires, wasting the possession. ..."
"... They found that most NBA players are very efficient in their shot selection. Surprisingly, several elite players are actually not shooting enough, according to their model. Here is the list of all NBA players analyzed and their score, where a negative number (at the top of the list) represent overshooters. Joining Westbrook at the top of the list were well-known names like Lamar Odom and Tracy McGrady.
Even bigger names like LeBron James, Ray Allen, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Paul and Joe Johnson actually show up at the bottom of the list and may hurt their team with their unselfishness. ..."
"... Just like a quarterback examining and identifying the defensive alignment as he breaks the huddle, the point guard in basketball has to visually process the scene in front of him.
From there, his brain, based on his vast memory of similar basketball experiences, begins to make a list of options. These can be spatial options, like move the ball left, ahead or right, or functional options like pass or shoot. ..."
"... However, each player will have their own library of choices stored in their memory and this magical sorting of best options can be influenced by several unique variables. One of these pre-determined factors is a personality preference known as action vs. state orientation. ..."
"... They found that those players who have more of an action orientation, according to a personality test given prior to the drill, were more likely to shoot first and more quickly. Clearly, Russell Westbrook must fall in this category. ..."
"... Certainly, this is the tip of the iceberg regarding the psyche of a player at any level. There are many more variables, some fact-based (I’ve missed my last 5 shots, so I’m going to pass) while some are more emotional, (I don’t want my teammate to get all the glory.) For now, Thunder fans can only hope that their point guard learns to share. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Points per Field Goal Attempt Formula: Concept & Application

In order to measure how strictly correctly a player or team is shooting we need statistics, and if possible a creative analysis of those basketball statistics.
Statisticians most often use the field goal percentage ( FG% ) to do it, but the added bonus of the three-point shot, for instance, isn't reflected in field goal percentage, and the ability to get to the free-throw line (where the points come much easier) is ignored as well.
"Points per Shot Attempt" (PSA): It's a stat designed to reflect the basics of good shooting: getting the greatest number of points from the fewest number of attempts.
Points per shot attempt is simply points divided by shot attempts . Figuring shot attempts is like this: Add field goal attempts plus "Up to the Line" (for 2 or 3 free-throws).
In case of analysis of another team and if you can't know how many times the player or the team reached the line, use (0.4 * FTA) instead.
PSA = Points / (Up to the Line + FGA)
Last years NBA league PSA average was something around 1.039 points per shot attempt, so by averaging, by example, 1.133 points per attempt, an average team gains a full point with every ten shots.
PSA is just as handy for rating individual players as it is for teams. Occasionally a player will break into the top ten who shoots nothing but dunks, but mostly it's the long shooters who are at the top of an individual PSA list.
This formula, with another fields formulas, are integrated in the 2nd. exposition of the Basketball Statistics Registration eBA Course: "Statistics Formulas Revision", at eBA ANNUAL CLINICS ONLINE.

Yao Ming was born to play basketball. His parents were former pros and Yao was double the size of the average Chinese baby.
Yao led the Shanghai Sharks to a CBA championship, before Houston made him the No. 1 NBA draft pick in 2002.
Many questioned Houston's decision. Charles Barkley said if Yao scored more than 19 points in a game, he would kiss a fellow basketball analyst's ass.
Yao proved them wrong. Over his career, he averaged 19 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks.
He made the basketball and the NBA popular in China.
Yao retired this week, at age 30, as one of China's richest men. His business empire includes his former team, the Shanghai Sharks.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Some reflections about the 24 Seconds Statistics

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System registers the shooting by type, zone, number of players in the play, etc. and also records the second of the shooting possession: into the 4 - 8 - 16 - 20 or 24 seconds.
The complete topic with the analysis is uploaded at the courses of the eBA ONLINE Clinics, but this synthesis clarifies the question:
On average the shots are made between the 11 and 12 seconds of the shooting clock.
A 7.6% are taken between the seconds 1 and 8/9.
In the first half of the clock: first 12 seconds, a 57.1% of the shots are taken.

In the last quarter of the clock: last 6 seconds, only a 15.1% of the shots were registered; but, nevertheless, the best field percentage is obtained in the last three seconds of the 24 seconds shooting clock.
This research is based on more than 1000 Euroleague games, analyzed from 1988 ( when it was called European Cup ), and is presented in the eBA Annual Clinics.

Friday Press Clippings:
Simpson's Paradox in Basketball Statistics

From Kent State University
By Darci L. Kracht
Download source here: ' Simpson's Paradox in Basketball Statistics ' by Darci L. Kracht
"... What's going on here? Let's look at the numbers to find out. The first row of the table has the data for two-point field goals.
We see that Huffman made 57 out of 127 attempts for an average of 57/127 = 0.449, while Bedford made 13 of his 30 attempts for an average of 0.433.
The second row of the table contains the same statistics for shots taken from the three-point range. Here, Huffman made 35 of 100 for an average of 0.350 while Bedford missed his only attempt for an average of 0.000. Thus, Huffman outshot Bedford in both categories. ..."
"... Now combine the categories to find the players' overall field goal shooting percentages.
Adding down the columns of the first table, we see that Huffman made 57+35=92 out of 127+100=227 attempts, giving him an average of 0.405.
On the other hand, since Bedford made 13 of his 31 attempts, his average is 0.419, beating Huffman's! ..."
"... This is an example of an unusual statistical phenomenon known as Simpson's Paradox, after the statistician who described it in 1951. It can occur whenever data from two or more distinct categories are combined into a single category.
Simpson's Paradox is more likely to occur if there is some "lurking" variable that makes the subcategories rather different from one another. ..."
"... There are a couple of lurking variables in this example. First is the level of difficulty of the shots. Shooting from beyond the three-point arc is considerably more difficult than shooting closer to the hoop, as shooting percentages reflect. ..."
"... Finally, we should ask just how useful these statistics are. In other words, how accurately does a player's average reflect the probability that he will make the next shot?
With 100 or more attempts in each category, an extra hit or miss would change Huffman's average by at most one percentage point. Therefore, his shooting percentage is probably a fairly accurate predictor of future performance--- not so for Bedford, as can be seen most dramatically in the statistic for three-point field goals.
With only one three-pointer attempted, his accuracy in this category must be perfect (100%) or dismal (0%). Such a statistic is clearly of little predictive value. Indeed, Bedford has proven to be one of the more accurate shooters on the team this season. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Real Value of a Lost Ball ~ Points Gained by Forcing Opponents' Turnovers

When a team perpetrate a turnover, a turnover is registered by the statistician. Following the game, on the next opponent possession, if the opponent scores, the regular statistical systems credits that opponent with a "point off a turnover" without regard to the type of turnover.
Case 1 – A1 steals the ball and dunks it on the other end, the Team B is credited for two "points off of turnovers".
Case 2 - B1 throws the ball out of bounds on offense, called a timeout, and then forced the Team A to use the entire shot clock before an A1 last-second jump shot score. Team B is also credited for two "points turnovers".
I don't understand that both these plays would be scored as two points off of turnovers, because only in one of them - the first case - did the scoring in accordance with fact result in a forthright manner from the turnover.
"Points off of turnovers" is thus, as taken by standard statistics systems, a deceptive statistic. This is why some coaches do not trust on the "points off turnovers" statistic to determine the price of turnovers to the team. On the contrary, they concentrate on the real prices of turnovers, which are double:
1 - The large price of a turnover is that the team who turned the ball over fail to keep an offensive scoring opportunity. The most significant price of perpetrating a turnover is the losing of an offensive scoring opportunity and not the opponent's next possession.
Offensive possessions per 48 minutes game are around the 93 / 95 per game, meanwhile for 40 minutes are 80/82. It's impossible to return any loss of one of these scoring opportunities and in the same way each turnover, on average, costs the team one of these opportunities.

2 - The opponent frequently obtains a better scoring opportunity off a turnover. This changes according the type of turnovers (see "Forced and Unforced Turnovers" at "Statistical Discussions").
a) an offensive foul after which the defense is able to assemble and reestablish will not make better the opponent's opportunities of scoring against that defense in that or any other situation.
b) In opposition, a steal leading to a high-percentage fast break can be a particularly priced turnover.
So the true "points off of turnovers" to be analyzed are those leading to opponents points scored in a direct way, though unmistakably this will change on any determined night being contingent on the category of turnover, being forced or unforced, and when in our offensive possession it happened.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System place special emphasis on paying close attention also to the points gained by forcing opponents' turnovers, in our terms: the "forced steals".
Prof. Roberto Azar

This kids gonna be the best kid in the world.
This kids gonna be somebody better than anybody I ever knew.
Ima show you, how great I am.
I have wrastled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale, I done handcuffed lightnin, thrown thunder in jail.
Ima show you, how great I am.
All you chumps are gonna bow when I whoop him, all of you, I know you got him, I know you've got him picked, but the mans in trouble, Ima show you how great I am.
But somewhere along the line you changed, you stopped being you.
You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you're no good, and when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow.
Let me tell you something you already know, the world ain't all sunshine and rainbows, its a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it.
You, me, or nobody, is gonna hit as hard as life; but it ain't about how hard you hit, its about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep moving forward.
Thats how winning is done.
Cause if you're willin' to go through all the battling you gotta go through to get to where you wanna get, who's got the right to stop you.
I mean maybe some of you guys got something you never finished, something you really want to do, something you never said to somebody, something.
And you're told no even after you pay your dues, who's got the right to tell you that, who? Nobody.
Its your right to listen to your gut, it ain't nobody's right to say no, after you earn the right to be where you want to be and do what you want to do.
Now if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth.
But you've gotta be willing to take the hits.
And not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody.
Cowards do that and that ain't you!
You're better than that!
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Keeping Stats ~ Downward Flight Ball Interference
... After a shot for a goal by A1, the ball is in the air when it is touched in its upward flight by B2 ( or A2 ). In its downward flight to the basket the ball is touched by B3 ( or by A3 ). Which is the game rule and the statistical register IN EACH CASE according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis ? ...
Rule Fundamental= If, after a field goal attempt, a player touches the ball while it is in its upward flight , all restrictions related to goal tending and interference shall apply.
Game Rule= The contact of B2 ( or A2 ) with the ball in its upward flight is legal and does not change the status of a shot for a goal . However, the subsequent contact with the ball in its downward flight by A3 or B3 is a violation .
eBA Statistical Registration= In the case of B3, two or three points are awarded to team A, without any register against B3 - this possession ends with the basket. In the case of A3's violation, the ball is awarded to team B for a throw-in, with an 'Unforced Turnover' register against A3.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Pie Chart or Circle Graph Statistics
A pie chart (or a circle graph) is a circular chart divided into sectors, illustrating proportion. In a pie chart, the arc length of each sector (and consequently its central angle and area), is proportional to the quantity it represents.
When angles are measured with 1 turn as unit then a number of percent is identified with the same number of centiturns. Together, the sectors create a full disk. It is named for its resemblance to a pie which has been sliced. The earliest known pie chart is generally credited to William Playfair's Statistical Breviary of 1801.
The pie chart is perhaps the most ubiquitous statistical chart in the basketball statistics analysis. However, it has been criticized, and some recommend avoiding it, pointing out in particular that it is difficult to compare different sections of a given pie chart, or to compare data across different pie charts.
Pie charts can be an effective way of displaying information in some cases, in particular if the intent is to compare the size of a slice with the whole pie, rather than comparing the slices among them.
Pie charts work particularly well when the slices represent 25 to 50% of the data, but in general, other plots such as the bar chart or the dot plot, or non-graphical methods such as tables, may be more adapted for representing certain information. It also shows the frequency within certain groups of information.

A pie chart displays data as a percentage of the whole. Each pie section should have a label and percentage. A total data number should be included.
Advantages
• Visually appealing
• Shows percent of total for each category
Disadvantages
• No exact numerical data
• Hard to compare 2 data sets
• "Other" category can be a problem
• Total unknown unless specified
• Best for 3 to 7 categories
• Use only with discrete data
With data from our eBA Encyclopedia

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Are the Basketball Field Goal Percentages values going down ?

Are the FG% values going down ? From the values we studied at the current eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Annual Clinic, corresponding to the archives since 1988, we can see that the FG% values are declining...
Is this due to better defenses, or to players entering the league lacking shooting fundamentals ?
Maybe this had something to do with the declining efficiency and productivity ?
1 - It's a combination of both reasons mentioned: defenses are better, or at least more complex than they used to be, and teams are more willing to sacrifice shooting from some players if those players are excellent defenders. But also more and more players are entering the professional leagues lacking the fundamentals of shooting.
2 - Overall FG% is declining primarily because more 3 pointers have been taken annually: despite more attempts the overall 3 points FG% has increased.
3 - But looking at Scoring FG% ( combining 2 pointers, 3 pointers, and Free Throws ) rather than overall FG%, the European leagues has had similar Scoring FG%s of 50.3% (in 98-99) to 53.4% (in 84-85), as it was years ago.
4 - New rule changes like hand checking, had opened up offenses and also the players take more high-risk, high-reward shots, so we can't say that shooting itself is worse.

Right Questions, Wrong Answers ~ A Review of “The Wages of Wins”

From philbirnbaum.com
By Phil Birnbaum
Download source here: ' Right Questions, Wrong Answers -- A Review of
“The Wages of Wins” ' by Phil Birnbaum
"... But an r-squared of .176 is a strong relationship between payroll and wins! The statement “payroll explains 18% of wins” is true only in a narrow, mathematical sense -- that the reduction of sums of squares from the regression line after adjusting for salaries is 18% of the total sums of squares from the mean before the adjustment. It doesn’t answer the relevant question, which is: what is the relationship between payroll and wins in the baseball context? ..."
"... In addition, adding more and more superstars has less and less effect on a team’s win totals, and therefore revenue. As a team gets better, there are fewer and fewer losses for it to turn into wins.
Derek Jeter might be worth five wins to an average team, but only, say, three wins to the 1998 Yankees. Again, this puts a natural limit on how much a wealthy team will be willing to spend on players, and, by extension, on competitive imbalance. ..."
"... It sounds plausible, but the problem is that it’s the rules of the particular sport that determine competitive balance. A simple thought experiment can show why this is true. Suppose that instead of basketball games being 48 minutes long, they were 480 minutes long.
With ten times the opportunity for luck to even out, the better team is much more likely to win the game – perhaps it becomes a .900 team instead of a .600 team. Or suppose the game is shortened to 4.8 minutes. In a game that short, even a markedly inferior team could win; perhaps it becomes a .450 team instead of a .300 team. ..."
"... Add up these factors, and it becomes evident why basketball has less competitive balance than baseball; the game is structured so that the team with the best players is much more likely to win. These are four powerful theoretical reasons why records should be more extreme in basketball even before considering demographics. ..."
"... Finally, the authors turn to players’ consistency. Using a percentile grading system, they find that only 12% of basketball players moved more than two grades (up or down) between seasons.
In MLB, 28% moved up or down two grades. But for NFL quarterbacks, the figure was 39%. The authors argue that quarterbacks are “consistently inconsistent,“ and the difference is caused by team factors such as the quality of the offensive line.
That’s probably a substantial part of the answer, but I suspect most of the difference is just luck. Quarterbacks have fewer opportunities than basketball players (and about the same as baseball players) – and the standard deviation of outcomes is very high. ... "
"... Some of the most difficult and interesting problems in the analysis of free-flowing sports is how the players affect each other in ways that are hard to measure.
For instance, suppose player A scores more assists than player B on another team. Is that because A is better at hitting his man near the basket, or is it because his teammates are better at getting open?
If player C is more successful than player D, is it because C is better at shooting, or because the opposing defense is concentrating on covering Michael Jordan, giving C more room to get to the basket?
If player E has a poor shooting percentage, is that because he’s not accurate, or because his team often gets him the ball with no time left on the 24-second clock, forcing him to take desperation shots? ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
How to Chart the Baketball Game Possessions ?

How can be charted the possessions of a game using only the box score and knowing that this resource is not complete and many times not reliable ?
Possessions had to be charted while watching the game and/or analyzing it post game with the video tape, because three things could end a possession - a turnover, a missed field goal rebounded by the defense, or arriving to the free throw line.
The first two are easily found in the box score. The third is not. It's was said in our eBA ONLINE Basketball Statistics Course exposition about "free throws register" that some analysts uses the following formula to estimate possessions based on the box score:
Possessions= FGA - OR + TO + .475 (FTA)

Image: Ziller in Sactown Royalty
The eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System deny this use and prefer to apply the exact number of "trips" to the line for the account of possessions, and this number only come from the post game video analysis. It is referred as the "Up-to-the-Line Factor" in our formula.
Another question about that formula, consider that the raw numbers are based only on actual results. The adjusted figures take into account quality of competition and the site of games, with a slight weight given to more recent games.
The eBA Possessions formula can be analyzed in this blog and at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Who owns the team statistical data?

When the statistician ends his work and send the game analysis report: is the statistician owed a right to use the data for publication purposes ?
First of all, at the early stages of the season, and in order to eliminate doubt from the beginning of the statistical employment, a document of agreement between the basketball team's manager and the statistician certainly would make clear and more comprehensible each party's respective obligatory preconditions and rights.
If the agreement involves a total permission, we´ll have no any problems.
Now, when the statistician works for a basketball team, data ownership clearly belongs to them.

If it was agreed at the pre-season and contractually that the basketball team owns the data, and the statistician is partially allowed to use the data for publication purposes, obviously there is an obligation to hide the basketball team's and institution's identities to protect their rights to anonymity in accordance with this right of limited use.
In any case, the head coach and the manager should be informed of such intended use of data and supplied with a copy of the final written research.

Advanced Statistics And Pop-Psychology In Basketball
by Jonathan Tjarks

From Basketball Real GN
By Jonathan Tjarks
Download source here: ' Advanced Statistics And Pop-Psychology In Basketball ' by Jonathan Tjarks
"... Before, when newspaper columnists grappled with the mismatch between traditional statistics and on-field performance, they threw their hands in the air and credited intangibles: some guys were winners, some guys were not. Some players knew what it took to win, some players did not. ..."
"... They relentlessly questioned conventional wisdom -- much of “Moneyball” centers around Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane’s frustration with the usual thinking about the amateur draft: “Over and over the old scouts will say ‘the guy has a great body’ or ‘this guy has the best body in the draft’. And every time they do, Billy will say, ‘we’re not selling jeans here,’ and deposit yet another highly touted player, beloved by the scouts, onto his s*** list.” ..."
"... Now imagine how important defense would be if a team’s best hitters could take turns the entire game hitting line drives directly at a slow-moving outfielder. That’s the situation in basketball, which has slowly begun to embrace the same sort of advanced statistical analysis that has revolutionized baseball. ..."
"... But in reality, much of Barea’s ability to impact a game starts with his teammates. A pint-sized score-first guard, he needs to play with a back-court partner who can defend shooting guards while still being able to run an offense like the 6’4 Jason Kidd. The Mavs, one of the oldest teams in the NBA, needed someone who can attack off the dribble -- Barea took a lot more shots in the paint this season (31% of his field-goal attempts) than Dirk (13%), Kidd (9%) or Jason Terry (12%). Conversely, their ability to knock down 3-pointers opened up driving lanes for Barea. .... "
"... Advanced statistics will probably never have the explanatory power in basketball that they do in baseball, but that’s because of the inter-connected group dynamic of a basketball game, not because intangibles are more important on the hardwood than they are on the diamond. ..."
