Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Some Thoughts About the 'Points per Shot Attempt' (PSA) Formula

In order to measure how strictly correctly a player or team is shooting we need statistics, and if possible a creative analysis of those Basketball statistics.
Statisticians most often use the field goal percentage ( FG% ) to do it, but the added bonus of the three-point shot, for instance, isn't reflected in field goal percentage, and the ability to get to the free-throw line (where the points come much easier) is ignored as well.
"Points per Shot Attempt" (PSA): It's a stat designed to reflect the basics of good shooting: getting the greatest number of points from the fewest number of attempts. Points per shot attempt is simply points divided by shot attempts .
Figuring shot attempts is like this: Add field goal attempts plus "Up to the Line" (for 2 or 3 free-throws). In case of an analysis of another team and if you can't know how many times the player or the team reached the line, use (0.4 * FTA) instead.
PSA = Points / (Up to the Line + FGA)

Photograph: Hans Deryk for naplesnews.com
Last year NBA league PSA average was 1.039 points per shot attempt, so by averaging, by example, 1.133 points per attempt, an average team gains a full point with every ten shots.
PSA is just as handy for rating individual players as it is for teams. Occasionally a player will break into the top ten who shoots nothing but dunks, but mostly it's the long shooters who are at the top of an individual PSA list.
This formula, with another fields formulas, are integrated this week in my exposition at the Basketball Statistics eBA Course: "Statistics Formulas Revision" at eBA ONLINE CLINICS.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Pass thrown to the backcourt from the frontcourt
"... Out-of-bounds from player's offensive end of the court:
1 - can the ball touch the frontcourt before entering the backcourt towards the receiver player ?
2 - or must the ball be thrown directly to the player in the backcourt ?
What is the rule and the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ..."
I believe, because of the question, that you are talking about USA rules.
Now, in both USA and International Rules ( FIBA ), a backcourt violation happens when, simply but correct, all three of the next statements are met in succession:
1- Team A has team control of the ball
2- Team A is the last to touch the ball in the front court
3- Team A is the first to touch the ball in the back court
In USA rules the player is allowed to pass the ball into the back court on a throw in, because according to those rules, there is no team control in a throw in. Therefore the first criteria is not met so where the ball touches before the receiver catches it is not important.
In International Rules, teams do have team control when they have the ball for a throw in. Therefore the player is not allowed to pass the ball to the back court on a front court throw-in.
Please, see this excellent thread and discussion about Over & Back Violation: Stats & Rules.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
ATS Definition in Sports Statistics and Betting

ATS stands for 'Against The Spread' and is not used in statistics analysis but is a betting term:
there are two manners of betting sides: the moneyline and against the spread. To bet against the spread is to make a wager that will be decided by adding points to one team or the other after the game is played.
Basically the spread allows you to bet on a fair contest where the underdogs are given a theoretical points advantage.
The ATS stats refer to the wins, loses and ties corresponding to the spread results, ATS stats are consequently more a means of judging overperforming / underperforming teams rather than successful / unsuccessful ones which a classic league table exposes.
Example: John bet against the spread that the Lakers (-7) would beat the Bulls. That means the Lakers would have to win by more than 7 points for John to win his bet.

"... The NBA has historically been a star-driven league and generally the team with the most star power prevails; ironically, when current Dallas Coach Rick Carlisle was a TV analyst he mentioned a formula for identifying contending teams (three All-Stars or two legit MVP candidates) that would have favored the Heat over the Mavs in this series. ..."
"... For instance, none of Nowitzki's 10 fourth quarter points in game six would be defined as clutch shots according to "stat gurus," yet anyone who watched the game with understanding realizes that Nowitzki's 5-8 field goal shooting in the final 12 minutes played a major role in sealing the deal for the Mavericks. ..."
"... It is very important to praise Nowitzki and the Mavericks for everything they did right along the way to achieving their ultimate goal, because the mainstream media narrative about this series will likely focus not so much on praising the winners but rather on critiquing the losers; even worse, those critiques will likely be completely divorced from reality (a pattern established early on when various pundits created myths about LeBron James being Dwyane Wade's sidekick and when some "stat gurus" suggested that any team pairing James and Wade would be unstoppable regardless of the supporting cast surrounding those two stars). ..."
"... Playing heavy minutes and carrying a very heavy burden in multiple statistical categories comes with the territory of being an MVP level player on a championship team. That is why it was so idiotic to say that James "had" to leave a deep Cleveland team so that he could win a title and why it was so stupid to suggest that it would be "easy" for him to win multiple titles in Miami. Great players--whether they are on deep teams, talented teams or teams that are blessed with both depth and talent (in 2008 I explained the difference between being a deep team and being a talented team)--must play 40-plus mpg while being very productive and efficient in order to win a championship. Nowitzki averaged 40.3 mpg during the 2011 Finals and 39.3 mpg over the course of the entire playoffs. .... "
"... It was hilarious to watch James and Wade be totally confounded by Dallas' zone defense in the NBA Finals--much like their Team USA squads were totally confounded by the zone defenses used against them by some FIBA teams ..."
"... This season not only exposed James' and Wade's flaws but it also clearly revealed the limitations of "advanced basketball statistics" and--with the marked contrast between how the media covers the Bryant/Gasol dynamic versus the James/Wade/Bosh dynamic--it showcased the ignorance, bias and hypocrisy that characterize much of the mainstream media's NBA coverage. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Some Thoughts About the Basketball Plus / Minus Formula Fundamentals

( Conclusion of the last Sunday article )
• Logic of this method is straightforward: teams should perform better when their good players are playing versus when they are not.
• The pure "unadjusted" plus / minus rating do not measure the value of the player per se; they measure the value of the player relative to the players that substitute in for him.
• There are differences in the quality of players that players play with and against.
• A weak starter on a team with exceptionally good starters ( relative to bench players ) will generally get a very good unadjusted plus / minus rating - regardless of his actual contribution to the team.
• Star players play a lot of minutes per game and will generally have a plus / minus rating that mirror the team's number as a whole.
• When the team gets beaten by a solid margin, the team as a whole will probably have very few players with a positive rating.

• A situation when a player have a NEGATIVE rating ON court and a POSITIVE while on bench, MUST NOT be lightly analyzed as this player should have been played MORE minutes.
• Players on poor teams have a hard time getting good plus numbers, due to the fact that their teams are usually behind.
• We must use the plus / minus statistical formula as just ANOTHER of many tools available at eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System that will help the coach to evaluate the team, not as a exclusive one.
• A good aspect of tracking plus/minus rating is that the players will be aware that the coach is grading the team's performance for every second a particular player is on the floor.
• Also gives role players or player's who aren't necessarily big scorers or into compiling big personal statistics, another way to evaluate and feel good about what he is doing on the court.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
False Double Foul Statistical Registration
"... A1 is fouled on the arm by B1 as he taps the ball towards the basket following a teammate’s field goal attempt bounces off the ring. A1 then comes down violently into B2 who has legal position before the ball passes through the basket.
The second official calls the foul on B1 and the first official calls a player control foul on A-1.
The two officials confer one with the other from the moment that they both have called a foul.
What is the rule and the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ..."
Rule Interpretation: This situation is a false double foul. A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and then perpetrates a player control foul. Because of the player control foul by A1, the goal is declared null.
Since A1 was fouled in the act of shooting, A1 is awarded 2 free throws with no line up on the lane for the reason that the ball will remain dead after the free throws. The ball is awarded to team B for a throw in on the end line at the spot nearest to where the foul occurred, in this case on the free throw lane line extended spot throw in.

eBA Basketball Statistics Registration:
We register as following
1 - the missed FG of A1's teammate;
2 - an Offensive Rebound from A1 (the tap);
3 - a made foul against B1;
4 - a received shooting-foul in favour of A1;
5 - the 2 free throws from A1 which ends the Team A's possession; and finally
6 - the player control foul by A1 which begins the new possession for Team B.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Plus Minus Rating ~ Definition & Applicability

The eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System tries to compare team success to individual performance, applying reasonably simple methods.
If we want to apply the Plus / Minus Ratings to suggest how a certain sequence of players would perform on the floor against an average opponent, we must determine the sum of each of the five players. We must perform the total sum of all of them and no average them. So the team's average plus / minus needs an adjustment be added, which is explained at the eBA System.
We must take into account, using the Plus / Minus Ratings that the overall debate about this rate has dismissed the effect of opponent strength because + / - rate doesn't measure player combinations for the opponents. On the other hand, there is no way to recognize between players who have good individual but bad team numbers, opposed to players with bad individual statistics but good + / - ratings.

The suggestion about giving on-court and off-court numbers different weights doesn't resolve this rates problems, because it would give us a rate too contingent on the overall grade of excellence worth of the player's team and in most cases this will have a very minor effect.
As said, resuming, the Plus / Minus rating determines the dimension of the statistical norm difference in team accomplishment when a player is on the court opposed to when he is not. We must concede the validity of the difference in quality of the players that a given player plays with and against, when he is on and off the court. Only when they are the same, or almost the same, the Plus / Minus Ratings will determine the dimension of that given player effect on team's winning percentage compared to that team's average. ....

"... I cannot think of a more simple of way of putting it than to state that the RPI is an absolute joke. I would like to know who made this guy and his formula the ranking's authority for college basketball? ..."
"... The idea of a rating system is a good, but it needs to be re-worked, taking into account more things. In short, the equation needs to be reexamined. I have always been a supporter of the idea of having basketball people -- with a background in mathematics -- come up with a set of standards and a new calculating system. And a recalculation is long overdue. ..."
"... The formula does not take into consideration how difficult certain places are to play at. We all know how tough it is to be the visiting team at Cameron Indoor, but how many fans know how difficult it is to play at Cal Poly, George Mason or Lafayette? ..."
"... What about injuries? Lets say it's early December and you go on the road to face a previously unbeaten team. You come away with a win, but in the weeks that follow injuries hurt the team that you just beat and they fall on hard times. .... "
"... If there are a couple of teams within that conference that have fallen on hard times, your win in December takes a hit. Now you never played those two teams that are struggling, but they both played the team you beat. Now you are paying the price for situations you had absolutely no participation in. That’s disturbing! ..."
"... Think about that for a second. You win seven or eight in a row and your RPI goes down. You win the games on your schedule, but some mathematician tells you that his formula has calculated that you should drop. That’s insane! ..."
"... I agree with the idea of a rating system, but we need a rating system that calculates more. The RPI is not only unfair, but it's flawed. Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About Basketball Rebounding Statistics Creative Analysis

"..... A basic generalization in many of the Basketball stats formulas is how efficiently players use possessions. The object is to get players who throws better shots, perpetrate few turnovers and catch the highest possible percentage of rebounds.
We are not just looking for the players who score and rebound the most, but who do so with the fewest opportunities.
The more efficient offensive and defensive possessions a team has, the more points it will score and the fewer it will allow the other team to score.
Rebounding Statistics: First of all the number of Total Rebounds are of little value. In addition, since offensive and defensive rebounding requires two entirely different approaches and skills, coaches must look at offensive and defensive rebounds performances separately.
To really analyze and evaluate the team's defensive rebounding performances coaches must look at the team's rebounding percentages along with the points scored on second efforts. These figures are found on the game and season (cumulative) box score, leaders, team goals, and graphical comparison reports.

Photograph: Lucy Nicholson for The Star
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System shows all this data ordered in the "Rebound Pages Analysis" at his 2nd. Booklet: "The Game Analysis".
The pace a game is played at will also influence the number of rebound opportunities a team has.
A team’s rebounding percentage is the percentage of opportunities (missed shot that can be rebounded) that a team capitalizes on. ....."

An Individual or Team Rebound... Case Study
"... B1’s missed shot bounces along the floor. A2 is in a position to pick up the ball, but instead elects to block off B2 while the ball
rolls out of bounds.
What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA
Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"
Conclusion:
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
Definitively, credit Team A with a Long and Non-disputed Team Rebound.
1. While it is possible that A2 could have picked up the ball, it is also possible the he could have fumbled the ball out of bounds or failed to pick
up the ball in some other way.
2. Since A2 did not actually gain control before the ball rolled out of bounds, an individual rebound cannot be credited.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Are the Deflections an Indicator of Good Defense ?

Some coaches take stats of the deflections.
More often than not, the player with the most deflections at the end of the year is usually the player who is named the team top's defensive player.
Deflections may never find their way into the official box score statistics, but it is found at our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System and you can bet that coaches understand their importance !

About the Concept= When we speaks about deflection, we refers the action of causing any pass to stray from its intended course, without getting yet the ball possession.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration= The example given of the 24 seconds is a good one for a deflection "Forcing an opponent Turnover".
The register of the deflections forcing an opponent turnover is deeply developed here eBA Encyclopedia > Articles > Deflections.

I don't think that is appropriate, because random noise can overwhelm the underlying skill, as it does for three-point percentage (even limiting the pool to players with at least 100 three-point attempts each year, as I have; the same is true of free throw percentage). .... "
"... My biggest disagreement with Birnbaum is in his use of a study from the 2007 paper "The Pot Calling the Kettle Black - Are NBA Statistical Models More Irrational than "Irrational" Decision-Makers?" by David Lewin and Dan Rosenbaum of the Cleveland Cavaliers to support his conclusion.
While part of the research by Lewin and Rosenbaum showed advanced statistics performing no better than minutes per game (with a team adjustment) at predicting future team wins, they later go on to find more positive results when it comes to explaining adjusted plus-minus. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Assisted Percentage and the Basketball Analysis

"..... the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System refers to "assisted %" in the following concept: the percentage of the own shots on which an assist was recorded.
In another systems, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System doesn't uses predictions, you'll find the formulas to predict the assisted field goal percentage employing the "assist share" factor.
The assist share is the estimated percentage of assists a player is responsible for when he's on the floor. This reflects the fact that the player can't assist to himself..."

" So looking over the effective Assisted % for players - the percentage of their own shots on which an assist was recorded - we can see players creating its own shot from a top of 90% +/- (generally the forwards) to an opposite end of a 20% +/- (generally the guards, and specially the point guard).
One of the keys of this analysis is the three-points specialist rating. The three-point shot are generally assisted and the less often a player shoot, and the more often this player shoot threes, the more of a three-point specialist the player is, and his Assisted % would be greater....."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Basketball Assists ~ Made, Potential & Missed Assists Stats Registration
"... After taking a defensive rebound, B5 makes a full court pass to B1 who misses a lay-up but has enough time to easily score from the rebound.
Which is the statistical register ?
Is there a potential assist in this play according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis ? ..."
No, it is not a potential assist case, from our statement that potential assist is the pass to another player, being oneself in a good shooting position, which misses the shot. B5 was not in shooting position at all in the moment of the pass.

Commentary from my Exposition at eBA Clinic:
" ... For the passer only counts as a possession if the shot goes into the basket. Had the passer shot the ball himself, it would counts in the direction of possession usage, careless of whether the shot went in.
But when he passes it off to a teammate, the stats register this possession for him as an assist only if the shot goes in: so, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register for this passer a "potential assist" at the game analysis chapter. ... "

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Correlation of a Relative Lineup Stability

When we analyze a team or a game with the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System we are interested not only in the player's average performance in certain game's category (points made or rebounds grabbed), but in his regularity in that category.
Certainly, an irregular player may be scoring his maximum points in an important game, but it's possible the contrary too.
In spite of the importance of the regularity, the official basketball statistics doesn't reflect this characteristic.
Therefore the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System made a research about the correlation of a relative lineup constancy in some manner with performance volatility ( a statistical measure indicating the tendency of sharp number movements within a period of time ).

The analysis of team lineup stability and performance appears utilitarian and a necessary part of team study which includes everything and it is included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
Generally, teams that are marked by a favorable outcome, don't change their roster as much as teams that having less succeeded, which is logical.
What is called "lineup constancy" is a little distinctly separate from the first, from the moment that you can have a stable roster but very different lineups.

Friday Press Clippings: Rebounding results were not caused by position leakage
Friday Press Clippings:
Rebounding results were not caused by position leakage

From Sabermetric Research
By Phil Birnbaum
Download source here: ' Rebounding results were not caused by position leakage ' by Phil Birnbaum
"... On the subject of negative correlations between rebounders, one thing occurs to me. It's possible that much of the effect could be accounted for by certain errors in the data.
Specifically, if sometimes players are classified in the wrong position, that will cause a negative correlation even if there wouldn't otherwise be one. ..."
"... Players are evaluated relative to their position. So if you misclassify an PG as an SG for a game's worth of playing time, you've given him three extra rebounds that he doesn't "deserve".
If you misclassify a PF as an SF, you give him almost five extra rebounds a game. This is a really almost the same as my "positioning" or "scheme" argument.
In the previous case, I say that perhaps some SFs take some of a PF's rebounding opportunities.
In this case, I say a SF might be actually playing the PF's actual position, taking *all* of the PFs opportunities (but relinquishing his). ..."
"... From this, we can see that the numbers are different, but not statistically significantly different in any of the five cases. Moreover, the comparisons are evenly split 3-2 over which estimate is higher. .... "
"... So, we can conclude: misclassification by position could certainly cause the negative correlations we saw.
However, that was probably not a major cause, because, when we use height as a control group, we get approximately the same results.
And we know that there is little error in classifying players by height. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Possession Evaluation (PE) Method ~ Offense, Defense, and Rebounding

The Possession Evaluation (PE) is a method of rating a team's performance in three areas of the game: offense, defense, and rebounding.
The formula was developed by Dean Smith and detailed in his book Basketball ~ Multiple Offense and Defense.
PE begins by counting each team's total possessions during the game.
Offensive efficiency is represented by points per possessions (pts/poss or ppp). Defensive effectiveness is the opponent's pts/poss.
A superior team should exceed .85 points per possession on offense and keep the opponents below .75 ppp.

"Percent Loss of Ball" (% LoB) is the percentage of possessions that end before a shot (FG or FT) is attempted.
This is basically just a way to correct for the overall pace of the game when considering turnovers. %LoB can be used to indicate a team's own ball-handling skills, as well as the effectiveness of their pressure defense.
A %LoB of .13 is excellent; .15 to .18 is good. You want to force you opponent into the .22 range.
The differential in the teams' total possessions is an indicator of rebounding.
Coach Smith considers a FG attempt as an end to the team's possession; the ball is no longer in their control.
If the shot misses, a possession is literally up-for-grabs.
The better rebounding team should have more possessions by the end of the game.
