Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
A Basketball Extra Possession Stats Registration
Transcription of a Chat eBA Analysis System Annual Clinic:
1st. Participant: "... In the situation of two points scored, received shooting foul and a free throw bonus, if it's made, no problem we have one ended possession.... but:
What happens if the free bonus throw is missed ?
We have and extra possession.... so how to register this situation ? ..."
2nd. Participant: "... Normally I assign a steal every time a player scores and receives a foul, as he gets an extra-possession.
Anyway I keep this steal out of the o.e.r. calculation. For the same reasons, I assign a turn-over to the player who commits a foul and allows a basket. Thoughts ? ..."

eBA Basketball Statistics Registration=
Free Bonus Throw missed gives an extra possession which is registered AS IF: as an extra possession.
No steal and no turnover is possible: this actions badly unbalance the O.E.R.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: The Bell Curve Method Concept

When I was asked how to calculate the winning percentage to points scored and allowed, I brought to account the "Correlated Gaussian Method":
"... It is a method that relates winning percentage to points scored, points allowed, the standard deviations of points scored and allowed, and the correlation between points scored ( which can be replaced with offensive rating ) and points allowed ( which can be replaced with defensive rating ) ..."
Now, the Bell Curve Method, also related to points scored and allowed, is in a relative manner a more hypothetical and close approximation to associating points scored and allowed to a team's winning percentage, based on the premise that the arrangement of values for teams' points scored and allowed are normally spreaded and can be reduced from each other to create another randomly staged random variable, net points.

In statistics and probability theory, Gaussian functions appear as the density function of the normal distribution, which is a limiting probability distribution of complicated sums, according to the central limit theorem.

Career: 400 games (or 10000 pts., 5000 rebs, 2500 assists, 1000 steals, 1000 blks.)
Area= "field goal percentage"
Season: 300 field goals
Career: 2000 field goals

Area= "free throw percentage"
Season: 125 free throws
Career: 1200 free throws
Area= "three-point field goal percentage"

"... I’m a big fan of On/Off data, which compares a team’s point differential with a player on the court versus when he’s off the court.
I’ve referenced it frequently in the past and think it’s one of the more telling reflections of a player’s value to his team in the advanced stat family. ..."
"... Then again, players hit unguarded 3-pointers about 38% of the time.
Which means if the average shooter attempts five open 3-pointers, he will miss all five about 10% of the time, simply based on the probabilistic nature of shooting.
A fact that has little to do with Kobe or any of the other players on the court. ..."
"... So, what can we say using On/Off data? It’s likely Dallas is a good deal better with Dirk Nowitzki. But, hopefully, we knew that already. .... "
"... To definitely point to a small sample and say, “well this is how Dallas actually played without Dirk, so that’s his value for this year” ignores normally fluctuating variables — like Jason Terry or an open Cleveland shooter — that have little to do with Dirk Nowitzki’s value.
So while such data reinforces how valuable Dirk is, we can’t say that’s how valuable he is. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
A Basketball Playoffs Scoring Efficiency Equation

" Does the eBA System have a specific method or basic efficiency equation in terms of scoring or Points per Possession for the Playoffs time ? "
Which is the real question:
- we are trying to compare the playoffs numbers with the regular season numbers ...
- we are trying to analyze the effect of playing the same opponent for many consecutive games ... or
- we are trying to analyze points per possession ?
After the regular season, playoffs time, the fatigue have an effect upon shooting more than any other stat and effective shooting % moves downward and lower.
The best players on both teams play more minutes and marginal players disappear in essence either in effectiveness or actual court appearance.
A determined playoffs series may have differences with the regular season or from series to series, no not differences at all.
Two determined high-scoring teams may give an enlarged production at all the statistics categories, but the possession value does not have direct relation with any "playoffs conversion" rate.
It is possible to apply during the playoff the following experimental formula:
Shooting Efficiency= Total Points / { FGA + ( ( FTA + Bonus FTA ) / 2 }

Rates or efficiencies should be calculated for each series, and weighted differently as the playoff round progress.
An equation must be based on the players who are analyzed against the opposition and are only considered in the context of that one series.
Resuming this topic and according to eBA archives of 10 past years in the playoffs series, for the finals players tend to do worse than their regular season production/efficiency and rates tend to be around 91.4 % of what they were in the regular season, with conversion rates of 98%, 96%, 94% and 92% which could be alternatively applied for each of 4 rounds of playoffs.
You can also study the following Non Scoring Modified Tendex from the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System:
{[ Rebounds + 1.25*Assists + 1.25*Steals + Blocks - 1.25*Turnovers
- Missed Field Goals - (Missed Free Throws /2) - Personal Fouls /2] / Minutes / Game Pace }

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Ball in the Basket Direction for a Goal or No
"... In the case of a ball passed from behind the three-point line enters the basket from above and passes through we have three points made and register of a three pointer.
But, what should happen and which would be the statistical register if:
1) the ball is deflected and enters by a defender the basket from above and passes through;
2) the ball strikes the side of the ring or the flange ? ..."

According to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System we register as follows:
In the situation 1) we have two cases:
a) when there is no possibility of the ball entering the basket from above and the deflection causes the goal to be successful, then we'll register a two-points goal.
b) when the ball is passed in the direction of the basket with the possibility of entering the basket from above and the deflection does not influence its fly, then a three-point goal shall be registered.
In the situation 2) the ball shall remain live.

PERFECT: Bob Knight and Indiana's 2-year quest. College basketball's last unbeaten champion By Bob Hammel The re-release of Hammel’s retrospectives comes after Indiana’s third consecutive season without an NCAA Tournament invitation – the longest such drought since a 30-year-old coach named Bob Knight arrived in Bloomington as the university opened its brand new basketball home, Assembly Hall. |
There had been four such years then. In Bloomington today, at now-hallowed Assembly Hall, hope is alive that in-state recruiting successes and pledges to Coach Tom Crean promise a bright light at the end of the present tunnel. As "Perfect" by Bob Hammel shows, it can happen -- because it has.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
How Many Possessions a Player Uses ? How eBA tracks this statistic ?

I was thinking about the fact that big men score more efficiently, and use less possessions to get their statistics, and guards averages three times as many assists as them, thus making the big men more valuable.
Thia reflexion is about how the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System tracks how many possessions an offensive player uses to obtain his numbers.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System want to know how "efficient" a player is with the amount of possessions they use and, therefore, applies the Usage Rate ( see the eBA Basketball Encyclopedia ): UR measures the number of possessions a player consumes per 40 minutes, and is calculated:

40 * (Lg Pace / Tm Pace) * ((FGA + 0.44*FTA + 0.33*AST + TO) / Min)
"Pace" is an estimate of the number of possessions per 48 minutes by a team, and is found by
48 * ((Tm Poss + Opp Poss) / (2*(Tm MP / 5)))
Also, looking at any stat on a per-minute basis (for example, pts/40 minutes) is a better measurement of who's doing well, being a good idea to avoid the use of per-game stats completely in the modern basketball game analysis.

Advanced statistics and the democracy of talent

From Magic Basketball
By Danny Nowell
Download source here: ' Advanced statistics and the democracy of talent ' by Danny Nowell
"... For several years now, I’ve been a devotee–if a lackadaisical one–of this sort of sports analytics. I didn’t do so hot in Calculus in high school, but I do care a lot more about efficiency than pure scoring, and I believe in things like Pythagorean record as mathematical ways to ascertain the quality of a team considered apart from the quirks of day-to-day game developments.
I worship at the altar of Chuck Hayes, he of the transcendentally yeoman post defense and darling of the analytical community. ..."
"... I am absolutely, positively not trotting out the tired reasoning that advanced stats don’t matter as much as the “eye” test. I am never going to watch Kobe go 3 for 45 and yell about how he has the eye of the tiger.
I am in every way in favor of questioning assumptions to have more intelligent opinions about what I’m seeing. But I wonder if we’re so compartmentalizing and anatomizing on-court brilliance that we’re raising a different point entirely. ..."
"... Here’s my fear: People like me are drawn to advanced analysis, in some small part, because it compartmentalizes the game into something I can have a hand in, can process.
I will never wake up as enormous and gifted as an NBA star, but I can diligently apply the full scope of my MacBook to figure out how to “maximize” their gifts. .... "
"... Like I say, I am absolutely in favor of advanced statistics as a tool for thinking about basketball. But I am also absolutely in favor of setting those things aside in the name of watching ball as I would watch a ballet, of excusing a stupid LeBron heat check in the same way I excuse the Russian Candy Canes of falling at the end of their dance in the Nutcracker. ..."
"... By all means, then, let’s use the tools we have to think about it better, to question our appreciations and sharpen our tastes, but without letting it crowd our appreciation of even the flawed moments. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Basketball Rebound Rate Formula for Two Players

How can we make a statistical computation the combined rebound rate for starting frontcourts (PF + C) in one team ?
We still studied from the eBA Basketball Statistics Annual Clinic the Reb% formula.
Now we'll know how to make the evaluation and the account for 2 players in place of only one,

This is the way to calculate the rate for the minutes when both players are on the court at the same time:
100 * ((TRB player 1 + TRB player 2) * (Tm MP / 5)) / ((MP (both on court) * (Tm TRB + Opp TRB))
It would be also a great work, as the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System applies this formula, to calculate the other three configurations, for example:
• the two players off;
• one of them on and the other one off; etc.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Double Assist for the First Pass of Two

I have often wondered about the awarding of assists in basketball.
In hockey, it's pretty much direct and preserved.
But after watching European basketball for over 20 years, I'm still not sure what actually qualifies as an assist in a basketball game.
And, quite frankly, I don't think those responsible for keeping live-time stats during Euroleague games know for sure, either.
Then, what about a fast break basket where the pass is moved up the floor to a wide open player that catches (at just inside the half) and takes 3-4 dribbles before laying it in ? I say assist but some of the definitions say no assist.

In fact, awarding assists in basketball might be the most controversial stat kept. ..."
In my opinion, and in this manner works the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, we must be able to give two assists - like in hockey - on one play.
As said in the last exposition in the current Annual eBA Clinic, "many times, a point guard gives a great pass, and another player makes a pass that leads to the basket". The first pass should get some credit , because it can be more important than the second pass.
On the other hand, a great pass that leads to the shooter being fouled is not generally credited as an assist, and it should be, or no?

Analysis of the All-NBA Team Voting

"... The NBA annually selects a 15 member All-NBA Team divided into three five man squads--and almost every year the selections don't quite add up, both literally (in terms of vote totals) and figuratively (I previously offered my take on discrepancies in the 2009 and 2007 editions of the All-NBA Team). ..."
"... Unless there is a typographical error on the official NBA press release, this year the 119 media members on the selection panel combined for 120 First Team votes at center, 237 First Team votes at forward and 240 First Team votes at guard.
The only guards who received First Team votes were Rose, Bryant and Wade--none of whom should be listed at any other position (though Bryant occasionally plays small forward)--so it is difficult to understand why there were two "extra" guard votes (119 media members voting for two First Team guard slots should produce 238 First Team votes, not 240).... "
"... A few years ago, Shaquille O'Neal called himself "LCL" (the "Last Center Left") and he was prophetic to some degree. Howard is one of the few legitimate back to the basket, traditional centers; most NBA big men are hybrids whose skill sets/body types represent a blurring of the line between center (historically the biggest player on the team and someone who operated predominantly in the paint) and power forward (historically the second biggest player on the team and someone who could rebound in the paint but also step out to shoot the 15 foot jump shot). ..."

Over & Back Violation - Statistical Registration

About the rules in the USA: A player must come transversely the mid-court line with both feet and the ball previous to going back over the line, in order to perpetrate a back-court violation ?
And... how must we register this play according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ?
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals: If a dribbler is progressing across the centre line ( it is not called the mid-court line which is something different ) from the back-court, then the player is still considered to be in the back-court until all three "points" are over ( i.e. the ball and both feet ).

Game Rule: Now, where the ball is being held or passed similar principles apply: if a player is in the back-court, stops near the centre line and then pivots, with the pivot foot in the back-court, then the player will not gain front-court status. If the payer use a foot in the front-court as a pivot, that creates a back-court violation.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration: UNFORCED turnover.
For international games the rule is different, but we told about USA Rules and I'll refer to that international games rule in a next message.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Efficiency in Different Possession Start Cases

As I stated in this post about Possession Start Cases in the eBA System there is a study on the average offensive efficiency in different possession start cases using data from play-by-plays of 1000 games of the Euroleague from 1988.
The research is presented in the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinics, and give us, among a lot of other analysis elements, the order of the starting of the possessions ordered from highest to lowest offensive efficiency.
And here we can compare those numbers of the european basketball with this data of the last NBA Season:
Possession start ~ Efficiency Start of quarter 96.0 FT made 104.2 FT missed, DR 101.9 2p FG made 103.8 3p FG made 104.1 Non-jumper missed, DR 108.3 Jumper missed, DR 104.1 Non-jumper missed, OR 123.3 Jumper missed, OR 118.5 Steal 124.0 Non-steal turnover 101.7 Average 105.5

Basketball Statistics And Performance

From Various Provocations
By Darius
Download source here: ' Basketball Statistics And Performance ' by Darius
"... Basketball statistics have gotten more than their fair share of attention after last week’s Sloan conference on sports analytics, and justly so: the drive to quantify basketball players looks a lot like the drive to quantify all aspects of human performance. ..."
"... The other problem with David Berri is that he is remarkably willing to utter unintelligent statements with a high degree of certainty. (e.g. the Knicks with Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony plus random role players would only win 29 games, Dennis Rodman was a better player than Michael Jordan on the second Bulls threepeat, Ben Wallace was one of the very best players in the league, i.e. top 5 or so, in his prime, etc.) Berri’s fault comes from his economics assumption about the opportunity cost of a missed shot, which leads him to believe missing shots is about the worst thing in the world, which is untrue: turnovers are much worse than missing shots, all things considered. ... "
"... That makes basketball the game most like life: in basketball, you’re free to make selfish decisions or good ones without a perfect guide for what’s wrong or right, and in basketball most of the stats can be juked if you’re clever enough. ..."
"... Which is I suspect the tehcnologists will have less success than they think, though who knows how good that will be. (Reducing forgetfulness and bias is surely a good thing, no?) ..."
"... To circle around to the point at the beginning: you’ll never get a single number to judge basketball players, but it’s foolish to ignore all of the ones that exist for being incomplete. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
When a Shooting Foul is called ? - Statistical Registration

When a player is fouled in the act of shooting while going to the basket, so we have a "shooting foul" :
a.- when the player is fouled as soon as he ends the dribble; or
b.- when the player had to at least make some attempt at throwing the ball towards his basket ?
The rule-books describe it as the "habitual motion" that precedes a shot. About this are we speaking ?
But I don't think that it's only to "make" a shooting movement, but to really attempt at throwing the ball, in order to be called a "shooting foul".

Trying to give an example about that "habitual motion" that precedes a shot, which is certainly possible for a shot attempt to begin as soon as the player picks up his dribble: the most common example is a layup.
In this instance, the player intends to shoot well before the dribble is picked up, but by rule, it is only a shooting foul if the dribble has ended.
There another two posts about this topic to read: When a Shooting Foul is called ? - Statistics Registration y Shooting Foul - Statistical Registration.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Giving Statistical Credit for an Assist
"... Which are the rules on giving credit for an assist? How do you define when an assist is given.
If the pass was made and the receiver dribbles before making the basket is it an assist?
How many dribbles before it's no longer an assist?
As long and the receiver of the pass is immediately going for the basket is there a rule on giving the assist?
Does there have to be no dribble at all to get credit for the assist? ...
Assists is the most popular thematic in our eBA Stats Group sites, so you can:
- in the eBA Forum look below for the Topic: "Assists, A question about Assists"';
- in the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book look for the eBA Discussion about "Assists";
- go to eBA ONLINE

The Stats Definition, as follows, "a pass that lead directly to a basket", we apply for Live Stats and lead to use by the stats men on the court.
"Any assist is credited to the player tossing the last pass leading directly to a field goal, if and only if the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating immediate reaction toward the basket.
No more than one assist is to be credited for each field goal."
But working at basketball Analysis, the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System is very much flexible:
- an in-bounds pass can be an assist, if it leads directly to a field goal;
- dribble may be made if the player are not using it to evade an opponent;
- bounces can be taken if they don't help the shooter to pass by another player...
So, we take in question, we are working for a Coach which wants to know REALLY which players promotes SHOOTING OPPORTUNITIES for their teammates.
A full chapter about this idea is dedicated at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System from the Prof. Roberto Azar, and an excerpt will be edited at eBA ONLINE in the next meetings of the current eBA Clinic.
At the same place you can read and study about his "2nd. Assist" concept !
See in our forum the 'basketball assists' topics and the exposition "Basketball Assists Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.
All the terms in this answer are explained widely at The eBA Basketball System Book and in eBA Clinic ONLINE.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Inferential Statistics

Inferential statistics refer to the use of current information regarding a sample of subjects in order to
(1) make assumptions about the population at large and/or
(2) make predictions about what might happen in the future. The basic statistical methods explained in the previous chapter are used a great deal in inferential statistics, but the data is taken a step further in order to generalize or predict.

We can easily determine the mean of a known sample of subjects by adding up all of their scores and dividing by the number of subjects.
The mean of a sample is therefore a known variable.
To determine the mean of the population that has not been testing or to predict the mean of a test that has not yet been taken requires the researcher to make assumptions because these variables are not known to us.
The goal of inferential statistics is to do just that - to take what is known and make assumptions or inferences about what is not known.
With data from our eBA Encyclopedia

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Statistician and the Head Coach

Meanwhile statistics may provide a road map, the coach during the game have to have the feel of the game.
Statistician's numbers can help the coach understand what's going on, but during the game the coach is alone in front of the court.
In Basketball, no one is alone at home plate as in baseball, isolated against an opponent again and again like the batter-pitcher matchup.
A Basketball player's shots vary in degree of difficulty based on his teammates' ability and willingness to set him up with a pass.

The statistician tries to measure those things by focusing on efficiency, both by a team and an individual.
How often does a certain player make good things happen when he touches the ball ?
How often does he keep bad things from happening on defense?
Who gets better the more shots he takes? Who gets worse?
Those are only some of the questions the statistician takes a scientist's approach to answering, subject on which our clinics tries to resolve in the first level.
