Friday Press Clippings:
Do players "steal" rebounding opportunities from teammates ?

From Sabermetric Research
By Phil Birnbaum
Download source here: ' Do players "steal" rebounding opportunities from teammates? ' by Phil Birnbaum
"... In my previous post on rebounding, I promised to review some of the evidence supporting the "diminishing returns" hypothesis.
That's the theory that, in general, a player's individual rebound totals are not mostly a product of his own ability to snare rebounds, but, rather, predominantly because of his positioning on the court, or the role he is assigned on his team. ..."
"... Every extra rebound by the center results in 0.61 fewer rebounds by
teammates. ... "
"... That means that only 39 percent of center rebounds are "real", in the sense that the other team would have got them if not for the center's efforts.
If a center is (say) 20 rebounds above average for the season, then, on average, you should estimate that 12 of those rebounds would have been grabbed by a teammate anyway. ..."
"... The variance in team rebounds per game is LESS than the variance in rebounds per game by the center alone ! ..."
"... Every additional rebound taken by the point guard reduces the rest of the team's rebound total by ... almost exactly one rebound: .96, to be exact. ..."
"... Taken at face value, that means that 24 out of 25 times, when a point guard gets a rebound, it's because the rest of the team deliberately leaves it for him! ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
How Often a Player Handled the Ball ?

... How can we calculate how often a player handled the ball ? ...
To calculate how often a player handled the ball on offense we have two ways:
1.- to count all the times he first gained possession of the ball while on offense;
2.- to register what he did with the ball (how he got rid of it) each time he had the ball.
A well known formula in other system, proposes this calculation of the player's touches:

(FGA + AST/X + FTA/Y + TO)
But in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, we understand that we must consider another elements: offensive fouls, double fouls, jump balls, technical fouls, etc. which occur only occasionally but must be included.
Another element not applied in that formula, are the defensive rebounds because rarely does a player score immediately after getting a defensive rebound, dribble the length of the court, and score.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, includes the defensive rebounds, and also the offensive rebounds, after which there is a basket.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About Rebound Percentage or Rebound Rate ?
It seems to be a minor terminological problem: in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System we find the terms "rebound percentage" or simply "reb%", meanwhile in another systems it is used "rebound rate".
Applying "reb%" implies that this is essentially a measure of the ratio of taken rebounds to rebounds opportunities. While "rate" seems to be more related to per-minute or even per-possession rebound totals.
In another systems, '% of rebound opportunities', has been interpreted in a few ways.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System have a disposition to consider rebounds collected by our team were never as 'available' as those obtained by the opponent.
That's means, I consider that, analyzing rebounds, your players should be fighting their opponents for the board fighting their teammate for each rebound.
Statistically, against weaker-rebounding teams, players tend to get more rebounds meanwhile sharing rebounds with teammates causes the analyzed player to get a smaller number of rebounds.
From the statistics point of view a player's Reb% is -- percentage of total rebounds --, but not necessarily an acceptable measure of relative ability to rebound.
See this example:
100 Rebounds in a FIBA game ~ Team A obtains 60 and Team B 40.
Players A1 and B1 each get 10 Reb in 20 Min. Since they each played half the game, their Reb% is 10/50 = 20.0
But if we measure by a scale to opponent rebounds only, then A1 got 10 of 60 (16.7), while B1 got 10 of 40 (25.0). This methods give us great deviations.

Sabermetric Basketball Statistics are too Flawed to Work

From Sabermetric Research
By Phil Birnbaum
Download source here: ' Sabermetric Basketball Statistics are too Flawed to Work ' by Phil Birnbaum
"... Now that I think I understand why Lewin and Rosenbaum got the results they did, I have come to agree with their conclusions. Correct me if I'm wrong, but logic and evidence seem to say that sabermetric basketball statistics simply do not work very well for players. ..."
"... I'm willing to be proven wrong. A lot of basketball analysts, all of whom know a lot more about basketball than I do (and many of whom are a lot smarter than I am), will disagree.
I know they'll disagree because they do, in fact, use the stats. So, there are probably arguments I haven't considered. Let me know what those are, and let me know if you think my own logic is flawed.... "
"... More importantly, it's not random, and it's not the same for all players. Some rebounders will cover much more of other players' territory than others.
So when player X had a huge rebounding total, we don't know whether he's just good at rebounds, whether he's just taking them from teammates, or whether it's some combination of the two. ..."
"... Most of the new statistics simply treat FG% as if it's solely the achievement of the player taking the shot, when, it seems, it is very significantly influenced by his teammates. ..."
"... Similarly, when Carmelo Anthony increases all his teammates' shooting percentages by 30 points, *and it's the teammates that get most of that credit* ... that's a serious problem with the stat, isn't it? ..."
"... But, just picking up a box score or looking up standard player stats online, and trying from that which players are how much better than others (the approach that "Wins Produced" and other stats take) ... well, I don't think you're ever going to be able to make that work. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Statistical Analysis of Basketball Assists
... Another obvious element is that this metric is somewhat dependent on how often a team made three-pointers, because the circumstantial numerical evidence that so many three-pointers are assisted.
It is not surprising at all that three-pointers tend to get more assists, having a portion of two-pointers which are "un-assistable", the result of put-backs and tip-ins, while few threes are shot off of the dribble.
Another evidence in our assist analysis maybe a good shooting team that doesn't score often on put-backs, so there were more two-point assist opportunities.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, is able to give two assists - like in hockey - on one play. Many times, a point guard gives a great pass, and another player makes a pass that leads to the basket.
The first pass gets a credit in the game analysis chapter - no at the stats numbers ! -, because it can be more important than the second pass. On the other hand, a great pass that leads to the shooter being fouled is credited as an assist.

In the case of free throws, eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register the assist if the fouled player makes both (or the three) throws or one of them.
But in this case, in our rate we give the assist a qualification of one point for each free throw made.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System registers the following stats about Assists, in addition to the Made and Received ones:
Defensive assists, missed assists, potential assists, assists in paint, assists outside of paint, within each, assists leading to jumpshots, assists leading to layups, assists leading to foulshots, and within each of these, are they part of fastbreak or not. ...

Crazy Basketball: A Life In and Out of Bounds By Charley Rosen With Foreword by Phil Jackson "... My first formal game was in a ninth-grade tournament at Junior High School No. 44, where my class (of intellectually gifted students) was trounced by class 9-14, a low-IQ team of unruly young men who’d been left back several times and who shaved every day. My main memories of playing in the cold, windy schoolyard were of wearing my long pants with my shirttails flapping, of getting razzed for being so clumsy as to stumble over a foul line, and later getting beaten by my father for tearing my pants. |
Even so, I was recruited to play with my classmates in a local community center league.

The 2011 NBA Championship will be determined on the court over the next couple months; during the playoffs, the NBA will periodically announce the winners of various individual honors: media members vote for every award except the All-Defensive Team (selected by NBA head coaches) and the Executive of the Year (chosen by NBA executives in polling conducted by the Sporting News). ..."
"... The various "advanced statistics" describe which players performed in a manner most closely conforming to the biases of a particular "stat guru" (some "stat gurus" use formulas that favor rebounding, while others favor scoring or some kind of nebulously defined "efficiency"); people who like good stories frame seasons, teams and players in narrative terms (conveniently disregarding any statistics and/or facts that do not fit the chosen narrative). Both approaches are highly subjective, but... "
"... I prefer to select award winners based on a logical analysis of all relevant factors, including statistics, observation of games (a heretical act according to at least some "stat gurus") and historical context; using logical analysis does not mean that I am always right or that I have successfully removed any traces of unconscious bias but it does mean that I value being right over being popular and that I have done my best to render unbiased judgments. ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
February 2011 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Different Situations in a Basketball Assist... Case Study
"... A2 passes to A4 who is breaking for the basket and A4
shoots and scores. .....
• case a) A2 was free to get a shot but A4 was also free when he got the pass; or
• case b) A4 was well guarded and had to make a move to get free; or
• case c) A2 was well guarded and A4 was guarded but had no problem getting
the shot off; or
• case d) A2 was free to get a shot and A4 was guarded but had no problem getting
the shot off.
What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA
Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"
Conclusion:
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens
to be followed by a field goal. It should be a conscious effort to find the open
player or to help a player work free.
There should not be a limit on the number of dribbles by the receiver. It is not even necessary that the assist be given on the last pass. The
eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System works with the 'Second Assist' concept.
There is no restraint on the distance or type of shot made, for these are not the crucial factors in determining whether an assist should be credited. Nevertheless, the eBA
System register both factors: distance of the assist and type of shot assisted made.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
• In (a) credit A2 with an FREE ASSIST and A4 with FGM. In this case, if A4 misses his shot, we should credit
A2 with a POTENTIAL ASSIST !
• In (b) do not credit A2 with an assist but credit A4 with FGM.
• In (c) it will be a matter for the statistician to decide the relative importance of the pass. If the statistician thinks that the pass gave the shooter enough advantage to shoot, then an assist should be credited to A2 and also credit A4 with FGM
• In (d) credit A2 with a COMMON ASSIST and A4 with FGM. In this case, if A4 misses his shot, we should credit A2 with a POTENTIAL ASSIST !
This Case Study was presented , on February 24th, 2011 in our eBA Portal: were sent 214 answers, 67 partial answers and 139 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Points Off Turnovers: Definition & Statistics
"Points off Turnovers" are the points given by our TO or made by the turnovers forced to the opponent. Forcing turnovers is great, but you have to score points when you get those extra chances!
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System records the Points off Turnovers in those two senses.
Some turnovers are continuing action plays (bad passes) and some are interrupted by a stoppage in play (travels, charging fouls, etc) .
Do we count points off of turnovers in each situation even when the defense has a full opportunity to establish itself?
If a shot is missed after the turnover followed by an offensive rebound and a subsequent score, is that still 'points off of the preceding turnover"?
In other words, when does the opportunity to create points off of a turnover end?

We can read at this eBA Recommended Site: CyberSports USA the following:
"Similar to points scored and rebounds, the number of turnovers is a misleading statistic. For turnover statistics to be of value the number of offensive possessions must be considered.
Turnovers percentage (turnovers/possessions) is the true indication of a team's ball handling performance. Normally, you would like to keep your turnovers percentage under 10%.
However, if you play an up-tempo game you can expect a higher turnover percentage (15% to 20%). This higher turnover percentage, in most cases, is offset by a higher field goal percentage resulting from more transition lay-ups.
When analyzing ball handling performance, it is also vital to look at the number of opponent points allowed off turnovers. Similar to an offensive rebound, teams must capitalize and score off turnovers for them to be of value.
If a team recovers and makes a defensive stop after a turnover, that turnover is cancelled or erased. Conversely, on defense, you need to evaluate the opponent’s turnover percentage and the points you are scoring off their turnovers."
For a deep analysis go to eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Shot & Foul ~ Change due injury & Statistics
"... Player A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and is awarded free throws. Due to injury provoked at the contact, player A1 is not able to shoot the free throws:
1) Who determines the replacement shooter for Player 1 ?
2) How the statistician makes the statistical registration in this case in accordance with the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ? ..."
Commentary About the Rule=
In all rules except NBA, the coach of Team A makes the decision. In the NBA the opposing team can select a player from Team A if the player is injured but not because of an unsportsmanlike act like the foul itself.

The injured player may remain in game with a time-out ( Rule 3-3-5, 6 ). If A1 is required to leave the game for blood or injury, the rule permits him to remain in the game if his team calls a time-out ( 60 or 30-second ), and the situation can be corrected by the end of the time-out.
Teams may use successive time-outs to correct the situation if permitted by rule and if adequate time-outs remain. Under this rule, if a team desires to utilize a time-out and can rectify the situation by the time the ball will be put back in play, the affected player may remain in the game, and in this case, to shot the free-throws by himself.
Naturally the only way a player required to leave the game due to injury or blood can remain in the game is if his team is granted at less one time-out.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration=
A received personal foul for A1, a made personal foul for team B player, change in the time determined by the game clock and the free throws, finally, there are registered to the player who shoots them, if this was this question's doubt.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Discrete Random Variable

In probability and statistics, a random variable or stochastic variable is, roughly speaking, a variable whose value results from a measurement on some type of random process. Formally, it is a function from a probability space, typically to the real numbers, which is measurable. (For finite probability spaces, the measurable requirement is superfluous.)
Intuitively, a random variable is a numerical description of the outcome of an experiment (e.g., the possible results of rolling two dice: (1, 1), (1, 2), etc.) Random variables can be classified as either discrete (a random variable that may assume either a finite number of values or an infinite sequence of values) or as continous (a variable that may assume any numerical value in an interval or collection of intervals).
A random variable's possible values might represent the possible outcomes of a yet-to-be-performed experiment, or the potential values of a quantity whose already-existing value is uncertain (e.g., as a result of incomplete information or imprecise measurements).

Intuitively, a random variable can be thought of as a quantity whose value is not fixed, but which can take on different values; a probability distribution is used to describe the probabilities of different values occurring. Realizations of a random variable are called random variates.
Random variables are usually real-valued, but one can consider arbitrary types such as boolean values, complex numbers, vectors, matrices, sequences, trees, sets, shapes, manifolds, functions, and processes. The term random element is used to encompass all such related concepts.
A related concept is the stochastic process, a set of indexed random variables (typically indexed by time or space).

1. Deflections for turnovers;
2. Defensive Penetrations Allowed - zone, player and game situation;
3. Defensive Penetrations stopped - in the area ? after the dribble ? etc. ...;
3. Assists in paint, outside of paint, leading to a layup, etc. ...;
4. Rebounds in traffic, Rebounds from free throws, etc. ...;
5. Turnovers - forced, unforced y rule violation turnovers by type (traveling, 3"...), etc.
6. Rebounds - disputed or undisputed; with numerical advantage; according to shots; side of the backboard; distance from the backboard, etc.
7. ... etc.

And, with reference to the minutes played stat, remember that, when using 48-minutes stats, the larger the difference in minutes played, the less reliable this comparison will be.
Although eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System uses this method, on the later same idea: the fewer minutes a player has played, the less likely his per-48 stats are to reflect what he'd do in extended time.

Friday Press Clippings:
Why can't basketball stats nerds separate the superstars from the ball hogs?

From State
By Dave Johns
Download source here: ' Why can't basketball stats nerds separate the superstars from the ball hogs? ' by By Dave Johns
"... The statisticization of basketball is a relatively new enterprise. Its modern incarnation is usually traced to Dean Oliver, a Ph.D.-trained statistician who started scrutinizing the game on a per-possession basis in the 1990s and derived the so-called "Four Factors" that make for hoops success: shooting, turnovers, rebounds, and free throws. ..."
"... But these metrics are limited by the available data. Not only does the box score fail to capture defense adequately—it tells us about blocks and steals and nothing else—but its tallies are polluted with hidden interaction effects. Take rebounds ..."
"... What's more, an offensive superstar allows his teammates to shoot more selectively, because they can always pass him the ball late in the shot clock, with the confidence that he can use his athleticism to get off a decent attempt.
Of course, this theory may be leaving out important elements of the game, such as player fatigue and the need to stay healthy. ..."
"... Today about half of NBA teams work with statisticians, and they tend to outperform those that don't. But the heyday of the all-in-one advanced-box-score stat may actually be behind us; coaches now chart players' strengths and weaknesses using services that slice up piles of game film into digestible pieces. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Keeping Stats ~ Rebounding the Own Missed Shot
"... Not a difficult question: can a player shooting the ball rebound their own miss even if it does not touch the rim or backboard ?
A more difficult question: what is the statistical registration of the whole play according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."
Rule's Fundamental=
When the ball is shot, after it has left the hand of the shooter, it is in possession of neither team. Therefore anyone, including the shooter, can catch the ball, resume dribbling or pass or shoot. The referee must determine that it was actually a shot.
This rule is referred by the NCAA ( casebook 2009 page 45 A.R. 110. NCAA rule book rule 4-68.1, and 4-15.4.c ) and is recognized by all the leagues, with the exception of the NBA where it is sometime called 'traveling' ... and sometimes not !.

Commentary=
If the referee determine that it was not a shot, that's means the player deliberately thrown the ball against a backboard ( not attempting a legitimate shot for a goal ), after catching the ball ( ball comes to rest in his hands ) the player in this case may shoot or pass but may not begin a new dribble.
If a player deliberately throws the ball against a backboard ( not attempting a legitimate shot for a goal ), this is considered the same as if that player has bounced the ball on the floor. If the player then touches the ball again before it has touched ( or been touched by ) another player, this is considered to be the same as a dribble.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
In case the player in this case makes a new dribble has committed a violation and we register an unforced turnover.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Rebounding Percentage, Standard Deviation and Adjusted Points per Game
This Sunday's Reflections includes short answers to important short questions about the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
"... How can I evaluate my team's quality at rebounding opportunities ?..."
Here you have the formula for a team's rebounding percentage:
Off%= (Own OR) / (Own OR + Opponent's DR)
Def%= (Own DR) / (Own DR + Opponent's OR)
Tot%= (Own Total Rebs) / (Own Total Rebs + Opponent's Total Rebs)
For the applicability and discussion of the formula, go to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.

"... How might the standard deviation of a normal distribution as a player season statistics be greater than the mean ? ..."
If some scores are negative, the mean could be very small despite a large SD.
The mean could be anything, even negative. Standard deviation is always positive.
"... What is really the "Adjppg" ( Adjusted Points Per Game ) ? ..."
Adjusted points per game (Adjppg) is just points per possession times the league average of possessions per team per game. This scales its yearly average to be as the league average for PPG -Points per Basketball Game.
This method applies in a straightforward manner to teams. It has never been applied to individuals.
For a deep analysis go to eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
