Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About Measuring Basketball Players
The central objective of Basketball analysis is to try to find a way to measure the value of individual players.
The form that this usually takes is to look at each statistic, and assign them particular values. If a player scores 20 points, that’s worth so much. Each assist is worth so much, etc. And at the end, you add up all the numbers to get a value.
Meanwhile, in any case, we are going to analyze team values, for a few reasons. First, because the game is played at a team level. It doesn’t really matter how any individual player does—results are determined by how the team does.
Second, it’s hard to tell how important someone’s assists were, without looking at how the rest of the team performed.
By looking at the team level first, those effects are automatically factored in. And lastly, they’re easily available online and provide large enough samples to be statistically significant.

The most necessary statistic for any additional analysis, is the number of possessions a team gets in a game. Points scored doesn’t tell the whole story, because different styles of play will lead to different numbers of possessions.
If a team play slow-down ball, almost running the shot clock to zero each possession, then there will be fewer total possessions in the game.
Essentially, this shortens the game, since the real length of the game in practical terms is how many possessions each team gets.
A basic misconception in analysis and broadcasting, treat as equivalent points scored and points given up with offensive and defensive quality, without properly normalizing for possessions.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Throw-in ~ Official or Scorekeeper Error
"... Team A is entitled to a throw-in under the alternating possession rule.
An official and/or the scorekeeper makes an error and the ball is erroneously awarded to team B for the throw-in.
What is the rule ?
Which is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."
Rule's Fundamental=
The team that does not obtain control of the ball on the jump ball at the beginning of the game will be awarded the ball for a throw-in from out-of-bounds at the place nearest to where the next jump ball situation occurs.

Commentary=
Once the ball touches or is touched by a player on the court, the error cannot be corrected.
Team A does not lose its alternating possession throw-in opportunity as a result of the error and is entitled to the throw-in when the next alternating possession situation occurs.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
Nothing to report at the stats sheet, but the "one possession difference" because of the refs error, must be registered at the "play-by-play" report.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Ternary Plot

A ternary plot, ternary graph, triangle plot, simplex plot, or de Finetti diagram is a barycentric plot on three variables which sum to a constant.
It graphically depicts the ratios of the three variables as positions in an equilateral triangle.
It is used in physical chemistry, petrology, mineralogy, metallurgy, and other physical sciences to show the compositions of systems composed of three species.
In population genetics, it is often called a Gibbs triangle or a de Finetti diagram. In game theory, it is often called a simplex plot.

A ternary plot can be used to examine relations between four or more dimensions where three of those dimensions represent components of a mixture (i.e., the relations between them is constrained such that the values of the three variables add up to the same constant).
One typical application of this graph is when the measured response(s) from an experiment depends on the relative proportions of three components (e.g., three different chemicals) which are varied in order to determine an optimal combination of those components (e.g., in mixture designs).

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Analysis of Disputed & Undisputed Basketball Rebounds
I am going on with the thematic of my last Sunday Reflexions: about the basketbal rebounding.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis chart the rebounds situation by
• how many players for each team are in the area of where the ball is for the potential rebound
• and from those players how many make an attempt to dispute the rebound.
The number of players that each team send to the board is deeply analyzed here.

We register:
• if the rebound is undisputed (against no other player);
• even disputed ( 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc.); or
• with numerical advantage (2 vs. 1, 3 vs. 2, etc.);
and we give a different rebounding rate taking in account only the disputed ones.
We classify the rebounds according to the shots:
• from three-Pointers;
• two point jump shots outside of the paint,
• into the paint; and
• from free-throws.
In all the shots: whether from right, center or left.
And finally we chart where the missed shot is rebounded:
• long rebounds;
• medium rebounds; and
• short rebounds,
• whether from right, center or left.
All this reflexion is no other thing that the contents index of one of the discussions at the Permanent Clinic of Basketball Statistics at eBA ONLINE: "Analyzing Basketball Rebounds".

Advanced Statistics: Game Changer?

From Stacheketball
By Patrick Lo
Download source here: ' Advanced Statistics: Game Changer? ' by Patrick Lo
"... What is the point of statistics, or for that matter, numbers? I think we can agree that numbers represent the relative value, or worth, of the subject in question. In effect, the more numbers, or statistics, that we have to measure value, the closer the perceived value gets to the actual value. Here the perceived value is the value based on all the information available as a whole whereas the actual value is the intrinsic, arguably unquantifiable, value. ..."
"... Much of the analysis surrounding AS focuses on how owners and coaches use, or will use, them to make critical decisions regarding lineups, matchups and potential trades. AS have even permeated so far as to influence game-time decisions through their employed stat heads at hand on the bench.
This convenience has proven invaluable to GMs like Cuban and Morey who consider their stat heads part of the coaching staff. ..."
"... We all have this unfortunate, but undeniable side that both yearns for and thrives off instant gratification.
For this exact reason I envision AS drastically affecting the way players not only play, but train for, the game. Dwight Howard serves as a fitting example as someone who would benefit greatly. ..."
"... As the article points out, a majority of Howard’s blocked shots end up out of bounds. As a result, the opposing team essentially gets another opportunity to score, albeit with less time. Another problem that arises from his block-happy ways is his tendency to basically hand free points to the opponent via goaltends.
Howard’s height coupled with his vertical leap allows to block shots most NBA players wouldn’t even attempt and yet at the same time he’ll swat shots he has no business touching. With AS in place Howard will see that he doesn’t need to block shots to be a defensive presence. ..."

Basketball Referred Concepts:
Special Efficiency Values for Playoffs

" Does the eBA Basketball Statistics System have a specific method or basic efficiency equation in terms of scoring or Points per Possession for the Playoffs time ? "
Which is the real question:
- we are trying to compare the playoffs numbers with the regular season numbers ...
- we are trying to analyze the effect of playing the same opponent for many consecutive games ... or
- we are trying to analyze points per possession ?
After the regular season, playoffs time, the fatigue have an effect upon shooting more than any other stat and effective shooting % moves downward and lower.
The best players on both teams play more minutes and marginal players disappear in essence either in effectiveness or actual court appearance.

A determined playoffs series may have differences with the regular season or from series to series, no not differences at all.
Two determined high-scoring teams may give an enlarged production at all the statistics categories, but the possession value does not have direct relation with any "playoffs conversion" rate.
It is possible to apply during the playoff the following experimental formula:
Shooting Efficiency= Total Points / { FGA + ( ( FTA + Bonus FTA ) / 2 }
Rates or efficiencies should be calculated for each series, and weighted differently as the playoff round progress.
An equation must be based on the players who are analyzed against the opposition and are only considered in the context of that one series.
Resuming this topic and according to eBA archives of 10 past years in the playoffs series, for the finals players tend to do worse than their regular season production/efficiency and rates tend to be around 91.4 % of what they were in the regular season, with conversion rates of 98%, 96%, 94% and 92% which could be alternatively applied for each of 4 rounds of playoffs.

Make THE Difference ... ! by Matt Devine
TMB Bank have launched a new brand vision "Make THE Difference" by making a film to inspire people to start thinking differently. With a hope that they will start to Make THE Difference to their own world. It doesn't have to be big, but a little can create positive changes.
This film is based on a true story. In 1986 a football team that lived on a little island in the south of Thailand called "Koh Panyee". It's a floating village in the middle of the sea that has not an inch of soil. The kids here loved to watch football but had nowhere to play or practice. But they didn't let that stop them. They challenged the norm and have become a great inspiration for new generations on the island.

Basketball Practice
By Steve Donahue
Steve Donahue is an American college basketball coach and the current men's basketball coach at Boston College.
Exactly on March 6, 2010, Donahue's Cornell team defeated the Brown Bears to clinch their third consecutive title and fourth in team history.
This guaranteed an automatic bid for Cornell in the 2010 NCAA basketball tournament, in which Cornell was given a 12-seed in the East region. Cornell went on to win two games in the tournament, defeating 5-seed Temple and then 4-seed Wisconsin, both victories by double digit margins, to advance to the Sweet 16, the first Ivy League team to advance this far since 1979 (when Penn reached the final four). There they fell to the 1-seed Kentucky Wildcats, ending their historic run.
This team featured several lauded seniors, including point guard Louis Dale, who finished as the third highest scorer and top assist man in Cornell history; center Jeff Foote, whose presence in the middle was essential to Cornell's success; and forward Ryan Wittman, who finished as the top scorer in Cornell men's basketball history (and the 5th highest scorer overall in Ivy League's men's basketball history) at 2,028 points.
Donahue received the Clair Bee Coach of the Year Award for his accomplishments during the 2009-2010 season.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About The Value of Basketball Rebounding Rate and the
Percentage of Available Rebounds
What's the value of 'Rebounding Rate'? Unmistakably it gives us the percentage of available rebounds that a certain player grabbed.
But, the question is if the 'Rebounding Rate' does keep an account for the degree of excellence of rebounders on a team. As always, we go to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System to get the answer.
Having a greater than normal rebound rate on a remarkable rebounding team is produces a stronger effect than a slenderly higher rating on a bad rebounding team.

Rebounding Rate - RbR - estimates the percentage of available rebounds a player grabbed out of those available to him. So, it doesn't concede the truth to what the other teammates are doing on the boards.
Rebounding Rate - RbR doesn't report the quality of a player's teammates and it does not consider who you were fighting for these boards. Player's teammates certainly have an effect upon that value, but I don't know how important it is.
Rebound Rate = (Rebounds x Team Minutes) / [Player Minutes x (Team Rebounds + Opponent Rebounds)]
Finally, how to define a relation showing how individual rebounding affects team rebounding ? A "better" rebounder is one that make better the team's rebounding.

Download source here: ' MLB "Stat Guru" Phil Birnbaum Explains Why "Advanced Basketball Statistics" Don't Work ' by David Friedman
"... Phil Birnbaum is a "stat guru" who primarily focuses on baseball, a sport whose discrete, one on one encounters between pitchers and batters lends itself much more readily to accurate statistical analysis than a free flowing five on five sport like basketball. Birnbaum has taken a look at "advanced basketball statistics" and he is not impressed by what he found: ..."
"... I don't think the stats work well enough to be useful. ..."
"... the raw box score numbers themselves are very subjective (I have mainly focused on assists but the same could be said for blocked shots, steals and, to some degree, even rebounds, depending on how the official scorekeepers define tips, etc.). ... "
"... Birnbaum notes that minutes played "is probably the closest representation you can get to what the coach thinks of a player's skill," so this is an indication that--contrary to the constant bleating by "stat gurus" like Dave Berri and their media sycophants like Henry Abbott--NBA coaches actually do have some idea about what they are doing. ..."
"... 'But, just picking up a box score or looking up standard player stats online, and trying [to figure out] from that which players are how much better than others (the approach that 'Wins Produced' and other stats take)...well, I don't think you're ever going to be able to make that work.' ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
To Calculate 'Turnover Ratio' from the Box Score

"... How to calculate 'Turnover Ratio' if you have only the boxscore data ? ..."
To discover or decide which players on a basketball team are the best at keeping well the ball, you can use turnover ratio.
Turnover ratio is the percentage of player's possessions that result in the player perpetrating a turnover.
Discover the stats for the player that you wish to analyze. You can analyze a specific game, a specific season or a player's entire career.
The turnover ratio works for any sample size. Clearly, the larger the sample size, the more useful the statistic.
Detect the following stats for a player: turnovers, assists, field goals attempted and free throws attempted.
Make sure you get each stat from the same sample size. For example, if you are going to analyze a single game, each stat should be from the game in question.

Multiply free throws attempted by 0.44. Add to that number the total number of field goal attempts. As you know, the eBA System does not apply the 0.44 coefficient.
If you are taking the live stats of the game go here to learn the eBA System about the eBA 'Up-to-the-Line' method.
Take the number from the previous pace and add the number of turnovers and the number of assists. The resulting number is known as the total number of possessions.
For the more comprehensive eBA formula of 'Possessions' go to Basketball Possessions: About the Concept.
Multiply the number of turnovers by 100. Then take the resulting number, and divide it by the total number of possession. This final number is the turnover ratio. Round the number to the nearest tenth of a percentage point.
Note the similarities or differences of the player's turnover ratio to similar players to discover how each player makes sense in terms of keeping well the ball.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Throwing the Ball off the Backboard
"... If a player throws the ball off the backboard ( but not the rim ), runs several steps, and then catches the rebound in the air as in this clip and tips it back in or dunks it before landing, is that 'traveling' ?
What's the technical at the end of the clip, because the ball off the backboard ?
Whatever your answer, what is the rule ?
And... Which is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."
Rule's Fundamental=
The play as seen in the clip, shall be legal since the backboard is equipment located in the offensive half court of the Offensive Team, which a player of this team is entitled to use.
On the second way, the game analyst may allow himself to register only the FGM in the Dunk category and ignore the first part of the play ("since the backboard is equipment located in the offensive half court") if he feels it a was "show-time play" and not a shooting attempt, and wants to register the "real" possessions number.
Commentary=
The reason of the T at the end of the clip, is the player throwing the ball to the gallery after the conversion, and it is no referred to the FGM action, which, as said, is legal.

BASKETBALL and Life: a collection of sing-song poetry based on growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn and a six-decades career as Official Scorer in the ABA ... Erving, Shaquille ONeal and Michael Jordan. By Herb Turetzky "There were holes in the floor that were big enough for me to put my foot in," then and now, the Nets scorekeeper, Herb Turetzky, says. After a while, Gene Rhodes, the Colonels' coach said, 'Even the yahoos back in Kentucky wouldn't play on this floor.' (ABA commissioner) George Mikan had no choice."
"He had those bad knees, but could've I made the wrong business decision with Julius?" Boe said. "Looks like I did. I knew he was a great player, but I didn't know how great he was. In balance, it was probably a bad decision."

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Fallacies of the Basketball eFG%
"... First what is eFG% ?: In laymen terms, it's a shooting statistic that takes into account 3 point shots by counting them as 1.5 field goals.
So for example if Kobe Bryant shoots 4 of 12 from the field, all 3 point shots, his FG% is 33% and his eFG% is 50%.
And if Elton Brand makes 6 of 12 shots, his FG% and eFG% are 50%. Both players score 12 points in this scenario.
The formula looks like this:
eFG% = (FGM + .5 * 3PM ) / FGA
eFG% is useful for showing a player's shooting efficiency. Both Bryant and Brand use 12 shots to net 12 points and by this method, Bryant is not penalized for attempting the more difficult 3-pointers.
So what’s wrong with eFG% ?
eFG% fails to recognize the impact of successes and failures. In the example above, Bryant failed 8 times by missing 8 shots while Brand only failed 6 times.
Hence, Bryant's 50% eFG is not equal to Brand's 50% eFG and if given the choice between the two, I would always choose the latter unless I was the opposing coach.
Why make the distinction when both players scored 12 points on 12 attempts ?
Because, during the game, succeeding is more valuable than failing and missing shots is detrimental on many levels.
1. Missed shots kill team momentum. Basketball is a game of runs and nothing ends a run quicker than sending one off the side of the rim. Conversely, swishing one through the net only adds to momentum, rhythm, and player confidence.
2. Missed shots lessen crowd enthusiasm. How many times have we seen crowd excitement grow with each successive basket only to be deflated by a failed attempt? Countless by my observation.
3. Missed shots often result in over-the-back fouls (on the bigs) or reaching fouls (by the disappointed shooter).
4. Missed shots are a success to the defensive team and a victory to the defensive player (hardly feelings you want your opponent to enjoy).
5. Missed shots are a golden opportunity for the defensive team to fast break, thereby, creating easy baskets and the ever-frustrating ‘touch’ fouls.
Imagine missing 8 out of 12 shots against the Phoenix Suns, who look to run on every occasion. Basketball minds know the very best time to initiate a fast break is on missed shots and steals. And, given the explosive nature of the Suns, providing them with eight potential opportunities is dangerous and counterproductive.
Conversely, making a basket allows your defense time to re-set and prepare for the next possession not to mention all the other intangibles that come from successful attempts.
Because eFG% ignores this impact of missing shots, it should not replace the tradition FG% measurement. Many Basketball forums, however, blindly quote eFG% as the end all shooting statistic. And while I certainly see its value, I cannot understate the importance of makes versus misses and success versus failure during the course of a Basketball game ..."

Basketball Referred Concepts:
The Hop Step Definition

Hop Step: A particular move which can create excellent shot chances and more variety in player's arsenal.
Player begins to drive to the basket with his strong hand. When ready to hop, bounces the ball hard.
At the same time, jump off his foot that is opposite to the ball.
In mid-air, hold the ball with both hands being sure to land on both feet at the same time ( if not, it is traveling ).

When the player is closer to the basket, he shoots it or dish it for an easy bucket.
If the defender is playing the shooter to a certain side, he must hop to the opposite direction.
For example, if the defender is playing the shooter to the right, then hop to the left.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About FTA, Personal Fouls & Officials
"... Are there at the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System Archives any statistical record of FTA and Personal Fouls inconsistencies during regular season games and playoff games ?
My real question is at what point does the deviation between fouls called on two teams become statistically outside the domain of convention ?
In like manner, is there a point where the difference with some standard measurements becomes so great that it is so statistically improbable that it is an indicator of a game refereed clearly in the favor of one team ?
This is a good topic when the media is demanding an unfairly behaviour of certain basketball officials. ..."

Applying the information available from boxscores, with the crew of 3 officials included, using 22 years quality of data, we found nothing at the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System Archives.
No individual official, as a factor in the crew of 3 model, had an important effect on the number of FTA and Personal Fouls in a game.
Some other numbers seem to link fouls called to single officials, rather than the crew of 3 officials we had to use in our model.
Concentrating on single officals would make bigger the power of any analysis, for sure, but I still consider unlikely that the results would be statistically significant.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About Basketball Possessions & the 'Pace Factor'
When talking about basketball statistics analysis, is really the 'pace' the best factor to evaluate the cheerful compliance of a team to run ?
I think it better bespeaks which teams, ascribable to endowment or strategy, force turnovers, rebound defensively well, and drop out a good opponent shooting percentage.
Possessions per game is a estimate for pace not processed or subjected to analysis.

At primary glance, a infancy of a sequence agrees with required knowledge about group speed. Phoenix plays fast. New York plays fast. Boston as great as New Orleans lend towards to essentially fool around in a half court. We can some-more scientifically consider a differences in in in in between Speed Index as great as Pace Factor by plotting them opposite a singular another. The subsequent graph plots a disproportion in in in in between group Speed Index as great as Pace Factor (where Pace is normalized around 100 as well).
Unsatisfactory offensive rebounding teams will look quicker than they in actual fact are, as will good defensive rebounding teams: due to the fact that offensive rebounds for one or the other team result in longer possessions, which entails a smaller number of possessions per 40 or 48 minutes.
A high FG% by one or the other team also changes downward offensive rebounds and therefore exaggerates possessions per minute.

Interpreting Advanced Statistics in Basketball

From Back Picks
By ElGee
Download source here: ' Interpreting Advanced Statistics in Basketball ' by ElGee
"... Thanks to the recent statistical movement in major sports, basketball now has its share of “advanced” metrics to dazzle the eye and confuse the mind. All the new acronyms can be a little overwhelming at times: PER. WS. APM. TNT. OK, so the last one’s a TV network, but there are enough formulae that we need genius George Costanza to explain things: (video) ..."
"... Your explanation of WP didn’t show any flaws, for sure not connected with scoring. If any only that rebounders are more valuable than inefficient scorers.
And it’s completely not true that it’s easier to have big APM numbers in weaker teams ..."
"... The point is it’s easier to have a bigger impact on a weaker team. I included APM in that sentence, because, for APM models I’ve read, my understanding of the mathematics is that it’s still not correcting for that phenomenon. ... "
"... Every unique 5 v 5 lineup is an event, but players are still bound to their own teammates. Duncan can’t also play with KG’s teammates, no? ..."
"... As I mentioned in my overview of popular advanced basketball statistics, Wins Produced has serious problems as an individual player valuator. Yet despite its massive ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
To foul or not to foul ? A Neutral Foul that Changes to Good

"... A team lead by three with ten seconds or so remaining. The opponent team is with ball control.
And here we have the dilemma created for the coaches with the three-point shot: to foul or not to foul before the opponents can attempt a three... but it is a question of other coaching forums...
The question is, if the coach send a player to foul an opponent to put them on the free throw line to shoot just two FT, for the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, assuming this is not a 'BAD' foul, is an example of a 'GOOD' or a 'NEUTRAL' foul ?

Basically we have here a neutral foul ( as stated, never a bad foul in this case ) that will be converted in 'good' if the opponent shooter miss at least one of the throws, that's means fulfill the objective of the committed foul.
For the explanation of these concepts you must go to this thread at eBA Forums ( among much others, use the search option with 'good bad neutral foul' ): About Shot Attempts & Fouls; and for the application consult at eBA Clinics ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About an Assist in two Passes ~ Double Assist
"... Player A1 makes a great full court pass to A2 who only has to hand-off the ball to A3 for an uncontested lay-up that is made.
How the assist is recorded in accordance with the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."
Commentary=
Go to this thread of our eBA Forums: Assists ~ Made, Potential & Missed to read the discussions and definitions about the eBA Double Assist concept.

eBA Basketball Statistics Registration=
It's all depends from where are you seeing the game:
- if the game is under FIBA or ULEB rules, even though the pass from A1 created the basket, it was not the last pass before the score. An assist to A2 is registered.
- if the game is in the USA (NBA or NCAA) no assist is registered, because A2's deflection is not considered ball control.
- for the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, if A2 was in shooting situation and "give up" the throw in favour of A3, awards an assist to A1. In any other situation, an assist to A2 is registered awarding a "double assist" to A1.
