Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
One Possession or Three Basketball Possessions ?

Let me give this example illustrating the difference throughout this game scenario. Team A has the ball and sets the offense to run a play. A3 get off a shot but it misses, and forward A5 rebounds the ball and passes it out to the guard A1. A1 restart again the offense and A4 shoot and miss a second time. A5 gets the rebound and puts it in.

The continuation possession statistical tendency says that Team A's offense produced a rating of 2.00 (one possession = two points). I think that the offense shows an efficiency of .67 (three possessions= two points).

Following-up this game scenario which rating more strictly correctly reflects that offenses efficiency in scoring ?..."

As stated in the eBA Statistics Clinics we can analyze possessions ( what you call continuation possessions ) as well as plays ( what you call "possessions" ):
The value of the "continuation possessions" is that they're approximately equal for a game. Teams take turns with the ball until the game ends. The team with the better offensive rating wins. In this evaluation theory, offensive rebounds increase offensive efficiency by giving a team more shots at the basket on some possessions.

The value of looking at "plays", can tell us how efficient is a team's offensive without taking an offensive rebound, which represent an unvalued analysis data for evaluating relative team strength.
