eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Standard Error

In statistics, the standard error of a measurement, value or quantity is the standard deviation of the process by which it was generated, after adjusting for sample size.
In other words the standard error is the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample statistic (such as sample mean, sample proportion or sample correlation).
Standard errors provide simple measures of uncertainty in a value and are often used because:

• If the standard error of several individual quantities is known then the standard error of some function of the quantities can be easily calculated in many cases;
• Where the probability distribution of the value is known, they can be used to calculate an exact confidence interval; and
• Where the probability distribution is unknown, relationships like Chebyshev’s or the Vysochanskiï-Petunin inequality can be used to calculate a conservative confidence interval;
• As the sample size tends to infinity the central limit theorem guarantees that the sampling distribution of the mean is asymptotically normal.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About Basketball Deflections & Rebounds
"Most statistics you have to be careful of, given just raw numbers," said Jerry Krause, who charts various aspects of each game from the Gonzaga University, Bulldogs bench, "because they depend so much on the pace of the game. I'm more interested in percentages."
Among the most important numbers Krause supplies to his head coach are those relating to offensive and defensive efficiency. They are based on points per possession for both his team and their opponents.
"Those are what I really put a huge emphasis on at halftime or after a game," head coach Mark Few said. "As much as points and field-goal percentages can tell you, they can get skewed with a lot of free throws and things like that. But points-per-possession gives you a much better gauge of where your team is at, both offensively and defensively."
Few also puts plenty of weight on deflections, another number that does not show up in the box score. This number, according to Krause, is based on how many times a GU defender gets a hand, foot or any other body part on the Basketball.

"I believe offense, basically, is rhythm. And anything you can do to upset rhythm is not good for an offense." In addition, the number of deflections gives Few a good idea of his team's intensity level. "It's a great barometer for us," he said.
"When it's up, it means we're active, flying around and doing good things on the defensive end. When it's down, it usually tells us we're being too passive and reactive." Krause said this year's team has been surprisingly sluggish, as far as deflections are concerned.
The team goal is 35 deflections per game, but so far this season, his team is averaging just 27. "And that's way below what you would want as a norm," Krause said. Deflections, like offensive and defensive percentages, can be charted during a game.
Rebounding effort, however, is a bit more complicated, and can only be determined after watching video of the game as at the eBA Stats Basketball Statistical Register System.

Kobe Bryant's All-Star MVP Performance Provides a Flashback
-- and a Possible Playoff Preview

From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Kobe Bryant's All-Star MVP Performance Provides a Flashback--and a Possible Playoff Preview ' by David Friedman
"... Bryant showcased his full offensive repertoire but he did most of his damage in the paint, reminiscent of how he played in his younger days; in recent times, Bryant has conserved his legs (and his energy) by relying on his deadly midrange game, much as Michael Jordan did during his second three-peat years (1996-98). ..."
"... Bryant's exploits provided a flashback to the time when he not only singlehandedly outscored a championship-contending team for three quarters but he matched Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor by posting 45-plus points for four straight games and he averaged 43.4 ppg for an entire month, something that had not been done since Chamberlain routinely scored 40-50 ppg in the early 1960s. ..."
"... with the extra time off between playoff games he likely can maintain that per minute production even with increased minutes, so Bryant will probably again average around 30 ppg in the postseason, matching the exceptional, Jordanesque playoff numbers that he has posted during the Lakers' three straight trips to the NBA Finals. ... "
"... Bryant is not going to score 81 points in a game again or average 40-plus ppg for a month but there is no reason to think that he cannot dominate during a 25 game playoff run. ..."
"... Plus/minus numbers contain a lot of noise--particularly in small sample sizes--but if you watched the game you saw that Bryant had a much greater impact at both ends of the court than Durant, who was mainly content to shoot long jumpers. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
One Possession or Three Basketball Possessions ?

"...I have a perception about the possession begins whenever the team regains the ball and ends when they shoot or turn it over.
Let me give this example illustrating the difference throughout this game scenario. Team A has the ball and sets the offense to run a play. A3 get off a shot but it misses, and forward A5 rebounds the ball and passes it out to the guard A1. A1 restart again the offense and A4 shoot and miss a second time. A5 gets the rebound and puts it in.
The continuation possession statistical tendency says that Team A's offense produced a rating of 2.00 (one possession = two points). I think that the offense shows an efficiency of .67 (three possessions= two points).
Following-up this game scenario which rating more strictly correctly reflects that offenses efficiency in scoring ?..."

As stated in the eBA Statistics Clinics we can analyze possessions ( what you call continuation possessions ) as well as plays ( what you call "possessions" ):
The value of the "continuation possessions" is that they're approximately equal for a game. Teams take turns with the ball until the game ends. The team with the better offensive rating wins. In this evaluation theory, offensive rebounds increase offensive efficiency by giving a team more shots at the basket on some possessions.
The value of looking at "plays", can tell us how efficient is a team's offensive without taking an offensive rebound, which represent an unvalued analysis data for evaluating relative team strength.
For the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System a possession starts when Team A gets the ball and ends when Team B gets it back from them, being the "continuation" possession a little more useful because they're approximately equal in a game, on condition that all the references from the my exposition about the "Possessions Analysis" ( see the previous messages in this thread ) must be taken in account...

Last 2010 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Different Situations in a Basketball Turnover ... Case Study
"... A1 has control of the ball and then loses control or makes a bad pass. A5 attempts to save the ball from going out of bounds and....
• case a) A5 is not successful; or
• case b) A5 saves the ball by throwing it back into play and straight to B4; or
• case c) A5 saves the ball by throwing it back into play and B4’s aggressive action causes B4 to recover the ball; or
• case d) A5 gains control of the ball but as momentum carries A5 out of bounds, A5 throws a pass to A1 that is intercepted by B4’s aggressive action.
What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"
Conclusion:
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
The intention of a turnover registration is to show statistically the times in which a team was given the ball and should have gotten some kind of shot but, before it could get any kind of shot, made some type of error that turned the ball over to the opponent.
A turnover can only be recorded against the offense; that is, the team with the ball possession. A team becomes the team with the ball when it has control ( involving the free throws situations ) or is entitled to the ball for either a throw-in or a free throw.
Philosophy: There will be some mistakes that will not result in the recording of a turnover because those mistakes did not entail the turning of the ball over to the opponent.
Mistakes that happen around the same time a team becomes entitled to the ball should not be considered turnovers. The team should have time to comprehend correctly it has the ball possession before being recorded with turnovers.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
• In (a) charge A1 with an UNFORCED turnover and register A5´s action in the play-by-play report.
• In (b) charge A1 with an UNFORCED turnover and register A5´s action in the play-by-play report; but DO NOT charge a TO against A5 by no means ( typical error of the live stats ... ) !
• In (c) charge A1 with an UNFORCED turnover and a FORCED Steal in favour of B4. Also register A5´s action in the play-by-play report; but DO NOT charge a TO against A5 by no means !
• In (d) charge A5 with an UNFORCED turnover, but register the previous A1's action in the play-by-play report.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
What really DOES a blocked shot do ?
"... if each basketball shot carries with it an inherent statistical possibility of being a basket, a block is not necessarily 2 points prevented, since there is no guarantee that the shot that was blocked was going to be a basket, right ?
In the some way, steals avoid a shot opportunity for the opponent team , ok ?
Now, the question is, how the different defensive stops can be quantified ?
Basically, a block is not 2 points made impossible from the moment you have no surety that the shot you blocked was going to be a basket. According to the eBA Basketball Clinics, in most cases, the blocked shot was going to miss 49% of the time.

Nevertheless, really DOES a blocked shot do, is to take that 40-50% probability of converting a basket and transform it 0%. When a defender player blocks a shot, gaining the possession, it is not possible for the other team to score in that possession.
Now, let me analyze the steals: they similarly take off a shot possibility for the other team. Stealing a ball, your team take that possession and make it a 0% probability of opponent scoring, instead of the implicit 40% probability of scoring each possession contains potentially.
As a result of this analysis, I think that this can be quantified finding out the value of a shot attempt, being fully aware WHAT a block and a steal is preventing relatively exactly ( individual player shooting percentages, of course, have weight ) with relation to the full basketball statistics game analysis. ..."

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
The Percentage Probability of Scoring Statistics

Are there in the eBA Basketball System any statistics on the percentage probability of scoring coming after each extra pass on offense ?.
From some seasons ago, the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System keep statistics on the percentage chance of scoring following each additional pass on offense, but the amount of data is insufficient to expose the research.

By this moment, we can affirm that the defenses usually give up a scoring opportunity after three passes, but this is yet under study.
An outline of this topic is developed in the Permanent eBA Statistics Clinic.
The first results of our research are included in the current eBA Basketball Statistics System Book !

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
How to Calculate the Basketball Expected Wins

Expected Wins are calculated using a logistics regression model. The functional form of the model is:
Reference: WPct= Team Winning Percentage
log(WPct / (1 - WPct)) = ג1*log ( Team Points Scored / Team Points Allowed )
The estimated value of ג1 is approximately 14. Substituting into the formula above and solving for WPct yields:
....................exp (14*log ( Team Points Scored / Team Points Allowed ))
expWPct = ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
..................+ exp (14*log ( Team Points Scored / Team Points Allowed ))

which simplifies to:
.......................................( Team Points Scored^14 )
expWPct = ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.....................( Team Points Scored^14 + Team Points Allowed^14 )
Expected Wins are then calculated based on the team's Expected Winning Percentage. Using this formula for all BAA, NBA and ABA seasons, the root mean-square error (rmse) is 3.14 wins. Using an exponent of 16.5, the rmse is 3.48 wins.

Disqualifying Foul and Points Scored ~ The additional free throw
"... The player A4, in the act of shooting a 3 pointer, he releases the ball and the player B6 punches him with closed hand in his face, the ref whistles and simultaneously sounds the game clock buzzer to indicates the end of the game and the ball goes into the basket, the ref ratify the basket and disqualifies B6, informing about all the events to the game officials.
The question is how many additional free throws the player A4 will shot, one or two free throws ? Which is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."

According to our eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System when we have a situation of any foul continued by a goal we are speaking about an additional free throw, that's means, the player victim of the flagrant foul will throw a free throw and the game is over ( or goes into an eventual over time ); in this example the player made three points and a possible additional point more.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration=
A4, a Field Goal Made for three points + a Received Foul + a Free Throw Attempt.
B6, a Disqualifying Foul Made.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
The Second Assist & the Potential Assists Statistics

The second assist, the potential assists and the FGA assists concepts are developed and tracked in the eBA Basketball System from the very beginning of the eBA Stats Group ( almost 22 years ago ! ).
I am convinced about the register of the second and potential assists to understand the game better even if maybe not so important to the metrics and the evaluation formulas.
In my opinion, and in this manner works the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, we must be able to give two assists - like in hockey - on one play.

As said in a previous post, "many times, a point guard gives a great pass, and another player makes a pass that leads to the basket". The first pass should get some credit , because it can be more important than the second pass.
On the other hand, a great pass that leads to the shooter being fouled is not generally credited as an assist, and it should be, or no?

Illuminating the Black Box:
Stats Guru Eayrs Tries To Give Packers An Edge

From WFTV
By Chris Jenkins
Download source here: ' Stats Guru Eayrs Tries To Give Packers An Edge ' by Chris Jenkins
"... Eayrs compiles a statistical team profile on each upcoming opponent, listing specific things they do well and identifying areas where the Packers might have an advantage.
Then he turns a few of those nuggets into bullet points for coaches to present to players. ..."
"... "The referees have tendencies, just like the teams have," Eayrs said. "And so what we try to do is talk to the players about what a higher tendency of call they're going to (make)." ..."
"... On a key third-down play, an opposing defender stepped right into the space where his team wanted to throw the ball. Eayrs wondered how the opponent knew. So after the game, he asked a friend on the opposing coaching staff about the play. ... "
"... "There are a couple crews that almost every game they work, there's some type of a player conduct foul - personal foul, unnecessary roughness - and it'll almost always occur in the first 10 minutes of the game," Eayrs said.
"It's like they're kind of trying to send a message to players that this is, we want it tight within the rules, and there are others that will let them play, and then all of a sudden, they'll kind of take control of the game in the fourth quarter.
Those are the kind of things we're trying to know." ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Team Offensive / Defensive Rebounds

"... How we define a team offensive / defensive rebound in order to analyze what percentage of rebounds are team boards in comparison to player credited rebounds according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ?
To begin the discussion, we must find the correct and most comprehensive definition of a 'basketball team rebound'.
The NBA statisticians' manual under the rebound section describes 'team' rebounds as:
2. ...If, before the buzzer sounded, no player had gained control of the rebound, award a team rebound to the team whose player attempted the shot.
4. .... a.- To the team to which the ball is awarded out of bounds or at the free throw line as a result of a missed field goal attempt or free throw attempt. This includes circumstances when:

(I) the ball goes out of bounds without any player having secured possession;
(II) a free attempt misses the rim;
(III) the shooter commits a free throw violation;
(IV) the first free throw attempt is missed in a two shot free throw situation;
(V) a loose ball foul is called immediately following a missed filed goal attempt or free throw attempt;
(VI) a technical foul shot missed;
b.- To a team that first gains possession following a jump ball when such a jump ball immediately follows a missed field goal attempt or free throw attempt, before any player is credited with an individual rebound.
5. Following a missed shot (either field goal or free throw) when a live ball becomes dead due to the expiration of a period, credit a team rebound to the team whose player attempted that shot.
And now, with the right concept in mind, we'll begin the discussion about the statistical registration..."

Life and Sports Motivational Videos:
...IF by Rudyard Kipling ! ... Recited by Harvey Keitel
Learn to speak the truth and take responsibility for your actions or inactions that may cause an upset in your life. Do not place blame where it doesn't belong.
You make your own choices and placing the blame on others only exacerbates the problem.
You cannot learn from bad choices if you constantly blame others for your misgivings.
When life throws you curves from the side lines, steer around those curves, embrace them as a learning tool, and do not lose sight.
This poem is recited by Harvey Keitel and the music is 'Júpiter' from the suite 'The Planets' by Gustav Holst

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Basketball Inbounds Pass Situation
"... Team A made a FG. Team B takes the ball out of bounds, and the inbounds pass is stolen.
Therefore, Team B certainly not had possession of the ball in bounds. Does this considered as a possession for Team B, in view of the fact that there was a TO (for example, a possession-shaping consequence) ?
Or, it is barely one long possession for Team A?
What's the correct administration of this situation? During the game and for the statistician according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."

eBA Basketball Statistics Registration:
This situation is not hard to be analyzed. Decidedly a possession for team B.
There was a TO and a STL, therefore it's a possession.
As soon as the ball is stolen, is in a reflex manner in bounds and it scores for both teams. The possession type according to our Basketball Statistics Analysis eBA System is a 'pass+Steal possession' and we register a bad pass TO against the passer.
By the way, if you didn't count a possession it would make a mess of stats like [TO / possession]...
