eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Unusual Event

In statistics, an unusual event is an event that has a low probability of occurring. ( Typically, but not always, it has a probability less than 5%. )
"...in terms of statistics, as we are discussing in the eBA Statistics Permanent Clinic, which of two events is the more unusual ? How we would decide, by example, which of the following two basketball events is the more unusual:
a. A 90 points scored game from Los Anageles Lakers.
b. A 100 points scored game from San Antonio Spurs. ..."

The first column shows the typical activity in each scene and the placement of the monitors. The other columns show examples of detected unusual events. We mark the median position of alerting monitors. In these scenes, the detected events gave rise to flows in an unlikely direction.
Please click here to see the enlarged image, opening a new Tab.
One would examine previous results records and note the relative frequency of 90+ point games for Los Angeles Lakers, and 100+ points games for San Antonio Spurs. Thus, relative frequencies are one method of estimating the probability of each event.
Note that the smallest frequency is the more unusual event. The more comprehensive explanation and relation with basketball themes are exposed at the eBA Basketball Basketball Statistics System.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Statistics never tell the whole story, but they don't lie, either.

Statistics: they never tell the whole story, but they don't lie, either.
At half time of basketball games anywhere, you can see coaches studying the stats sheet before addressing their respective teams.
The stats sheet provides all the incriminating evidence that the coach needs to see: who's being outplayed, who's got the hot hand from the three-point range and so on.
But I always remains in doubt.... stats quantify the game.... they never tell the whole story..... they don't lie..... but something is lacking.... either !

Therefore, the eBA Team states about the rankings: the ranking and ratio stats have a tremendous appeal to coaches and are very useful, specially at half time recess, but only if they are based on absolutely true statistical data.
In our opinion, if there are a simple doubt about the data, its preferable not to use this type of stats for a box score at a live game.
In another words, ranking or ratio stats must be applied only at the post game analysis work, particularly after the Video Analysis according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
With reference to my personal opinion about the use of those sophisticated and complicated formulas from the 'basketball-stats-gurus' applied by another systems
( our eBA system doesn't work that way ...), and actually understood by very few coaches, I shall reflect another Sunday...

Illuminating the Black Box:
Using Statistics to Understand Women's College Basketball

"... Personally, I like statistics because they help me to pinpoint reasons a team won or lost, see patterns that might have seemed like disconnected moments, and organize my thinking about the game.
However, while the use of statistics has definitely been growing among basketball enthusiasts, there are people who lament their use for good reason – they neither capture the full story of the game, nor the nuance of the type of "good basketball" ..."
"... The key however is to keep it all in perspective: statistics should be used to complement, not replace, the subjective beauty of games like basketball. ..."
"... Furthermore, while it’s hard enough to follow all of men’s basketball, it’s even harder to follow women’s basketball given that so few games are televised and so many less are even given in-depth coverage.
If nothing else, the statistics can tell us some kernel of a story about what happened in a given game or over the course of a given season that we would otherwise not have. ... "
"... For example, things such as ball movement, whether a team played together well, or whether or not a team actually played well and lost or played terribly and won are things that are difficult for the casual fan to see just looking a final scores and basic statistics. ..."
"... So here's the question that I've been struggling with and have come up with some tentative answers for after watching as many pre-season games as I could: how can we give the most accurate account of what’s happening in women’s college basketball – even in one conference – if it’s essentially impossible to watch every game due to fundamental barriers such as accessibility, time, and money? What might statistics say and not say in response to that question? ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Discussion about... When is it an Assist ?

About a discussion from the last Saturday at our eBA Statistics Forum "... A5 is dribbling around outside, he drops the ball into A7 in the post. A7 dribbles a bit (dribble of a center), tries to shake his defender, succeeds and scores. Does A5 get an assist ? ..."
Some excerpts from the conclusions:
... according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, an assist has to be "a major part of the play", which either finds the player already with a "positional advantage", or helps him or her get one ...
... if A7 is well covered and gets himself open, then no assist ...
... is time a factor? Time is not a factor - action is ...
... if A7 spends that entire 5 seconds preparing his position for his shot, then there is no assist ...
... if A7 grabs the ball without purpose to shoot ( looks around for a pass, etc, and then decides to shoot ), there is no assist ...
... to register an assist, the pass needs to lead to directly to the "act of shooting", but the eBA System is more flexible ...

... is the quality of the pass a factor? Yes, if the receiver of the pass has to try so hard as to change direction or action to catch the pass, may be an assist is not registered ..."
... if A7 receive the pass and then has to make a subsequent move to evade the defense and score, no assist is awarded; but if he pass along the defender as result of a great pass, an assist is registered ...
... if the receiver catches the ball with no intent to shoot (i.e., is flat-footed, in a holding or passing position) and then decides to shoot, then typically no assist is awarded; but you, as that player statistician, who knows his movements and can establish that those actions are habitual, may be an assist is awarded ...
... in layup situations, any pass that put the shooter into that "act of shooting" is an assist, just as the "continuation" calls on fouls ...
... live time statisticians consider it an assist when a player finds another player open and that player makes one basketball move or less before putting up a shot: if that player dribbles more than once to gain position or sits on the ball (whether he's dribbling or not), they don't consider it an assist ...
... the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System is capable to register an assist after some dribbles and also a double assist: look for the previous messages in this blog performing the 'Search' with keyword: 'assist' ...

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Applying the Plus Minus Rating and Our Definition

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System tries to compare team success to individual performance, applying reasonably simple methods.
If we want to apply the Plus / Minus Ratings to suggest how a certain sequence of players would perform on the floor against an average opponent, we must determine the sum of each of the five players.
We must perform the total sum of all of them and no average them. So the team's average plus / minus needs an adjustment be added, which is explained at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
This is our definition of the rating
Plus Minus = (on-court +/-) minus (off-court +/-)
These are all per-48 minutes measures. But we are asking ourselves and searching if it be better if the definition were the following...

Plus Minus Rating = (on-court +/-) minus (off-court +/-) plus (20% of average team +/-)
Alternatively, doing basketball analysis and not only stats-numbers, one could just normalize the Plus Minus Rating so that the average minutes-weighted rating for a given team was equal to the team's average plus/minus.
I think we have to to give the on-court and off-court numbers the same weight. If he did not do so, I am not sure how we would interpret the plus / minus rating.
Making the measure a per 100 possessions measure it's better rather than per 48 minutes: that's means, it's a very good thing anytime we are able to remove the effect of pace.
This topic is extended in the Statistics and Statisticians Board in the eBA Forum and the terminology is included in the eBA Basketball Encyclopedia.

"... Some NBA commentators enjoy cherry picking numbers to support their favorite storylines; for instance, Mike Wilbon long ago fell in love with the idea that the L.A. Lakers' success is directly linked to Kobe Bryant attempting less than a certain number of shots. ..."
"... Sarcasm aside, Wilbon's "theory" sounds less than convincing to anyone who is intelligent and thinks about the subject for at least 10 seconds. Field goal attempts are an odd way to evaluate a scorer, because FGAs can consist of "hand grenades" (shots fired up to beat the shot clock buzzer after a teammate passes the ball to a player right before the shot clock "explodes"), half court heaves at the end of quarters, late game shots launched in a flurry as a trailing team desperately tries to come back and other anomalies; the chicken-egg question that Wilbon never discusses is whether Bryant's "extra" field goal attempts cause losses (as Wilbon apparently believes), whether they are the result of Bryant picking up a heavier load in games that the Lakers are losing because his teammates disappeared or whether other factors are involved. ..."
"... I know that every TV and radio talking head has a stack of statistics and facts placed in front of him before each broadcast plus a producer constantly talking to him in his ear; what I simply cannot fathom is why so many people on TV and radio say things that just do not make sense and then try to support this nonsense with faulty and/or misleading data. ... "
"... Is it really that hard to think logically, are media members so devoted to storylines that they consider to be "higher truths" that they make intentionally misleading statements or do certain people simply lose all sense of pride/self respect regarding their work once they have "made it" (in terms of receiving huge salaries)? ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Calculating the Possessions Usage Rate

How can we calculate the usage rate in basketball ? Usage rate give you evidence about the number of possessions a player makes use of while on the court.
This statistic is a good indicator of how important is the role of a particular player has in the team's offense.
You must take only one individual player you want to analyze. Calculation for multiple players or teams can't be applied without doing the calculation individually.
Find at the boxscore or the stats sheet the following stats for the player who you have selected: field goal attempts, free throw attempts, assists and turnovers. If you are going to use multiple games, use the averages of each of these numbers.

Multiply free throw attempts by 0.44. The resulting number is known as adjusted free throws. As you know, the eBA System doesn´t apply the 0.44 coefficient.
If you are taking the live stats of the game go here to learn the eBA System about the eBA 'Up-to-the-Line' method.
Multiply assists by 0.33. The resulting number is known as adjusted assists.
Add adjusted free throws, adjusted assists, field goals attempted and turnovers. The resulting number is known as usage rate. While there are variations on how you arrive at usage rate ( and the eBA System has it's proper method, as studied at the eBA Clinics ), this is the way that is universal from league to league.
Using this method, you can compare players at any level to players in the NBA, FIBA and ULEB.

For a deep analysis go to eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
Compare usage rate between players to discover which players utilize their court time the most.
The higher the player's usage rate, the more possessions the player utilizes. However, a high usage rate is not always a positive indicator. If you are forming a team, you need to mix players with high usage rates with players with low usage rates to make sure everyone has the ball as much as they need it.

Rebound from several players at the same time
"... A missed shot is rebounded by several players at the same time. The ball eventually became tied-up/held, and the referee blows to indicate JUMP BALL. When the play stopped, there are three players from the same team holding the ball.
What's the correct administration of this situation? During the game and for the statistician according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."
eBA Basketball Statistical Commentary:
If the referee feels both teams were involved at one time with the "tie-up" then goes ahead and calls the held ball. There is no stipulation that mandates opposing teams still have to be holding onto the ball when the whistle blows.

eBA Basketball Statistics Registration=
But, if the referee feels sure only one team was involved, his options now are inadvertent whistle or a traveling violation.
If he thinks that a player had possession of the ball and shuffled feet, then he must call the violation, otherwise will explain the inadvertent whistle, will give the ball to the team in possession and will get on with the game as soon as possible.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
SCREEN on the BALL ~ Stationary Position ?

Some reflections about the controversial sreen on the ball... when a screen is set on the offensive player who is dribbling; had the defender to be in a stationary position at least one full stride away from the person he is trying to screen ?
What is the rule and in case of infraction, which type of turnover is charged according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ?
The defender must initially establish a legal guarding position. To establish this position, the player need to get both feet on the floor while facing his opponent. Once established, as long as the player maintains defensive position, the player does not have to be "stationary" or "planted" to draw a charge.
On the contrary to one of the Basketball myths, that "the defender has to be planted in a stationary position" we can say that in reality the defender must initially establish a legal guarding position. To set up this position he need to get both feet on the floor facing his opponent.

Once established, meanwhile the player maintains defensive position (throats crossed over the breast in order to avoid being beaten, in example), he does not have to be "standing still" or "planted" to pull a charge. The refs will generally call an offensive foul if a defender in a legal position makes contact in "the letters". Both feet do not have to be on the floor at the time of touch: the player could even be moving backwards to reduce strike risks.
Another Basketball myth says that "the defender must give the ball handler a step".
The rules philosophy is that the player with the ball must expect to be guarded. Being set up an initial guarding position, any distance short of contact with the ballhandler is legal.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration=
In both cases referred to both myths there is an exception with an airborne player: if the defender set up position while the ballhandler is in the air, a landing spot must be given to him.
If the ballhandler lands with both feet and then proceeds to contact the defender, the offensive player is responsible for the contact and a forced turnover against him is charged, meanwhile a forced steal is registered in favor of the defender, according to our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
When we are defending a player without the ball, it is a "screening" situation, which may require time and distance. In the cases referred in this topic, we call this "guarding" situations which only require that a legal position must be set up, which could be less than a step off.

"... What is the point of statistics, or for that matter, numbers? I think we can agree that numbers represent the relative value, or worth, of the subject in question.

Wins, in turn, measure the relative worth in relation to all the other teams in the league. Essentially, numbers in basketball are a simplified reference point to determine relative worth. ..."
"... Much of the analysis surrounding AS focuses on how owners and coaches use, or will use, them to make critical decisions regarding lineups, matchups and potential trades.
AS have even permeated so far as to influence game-time decisions through their employed stat heads at hand on the bench.

Blocked or Altered Shots Statistical Charging

The blocked shots are an area of doubts for the statisticians, how this actions are registered ?
The blocked shots as the fact of whether a pass or shot is being attempted, are areas of difficulty for the statistician.
The blocked shots are considered as attempts in the eBA Statistics Registration only if the offensive player was in the act of shooting before the ball was blocked.
If there is a doubt as to whether the player was intending to shoot, the eBA Statistics Registration shall be that he was not intending a shot.

For the overall function of the statistics analysis, the act of shooting is defined as an upward and/or forth motion toward the basket with the purpose of trying for a goal.
For a deep analysis go to eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.

By the way, remember these definitions from the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System: at the Block Shot (2nd. photograph) the ball doesn't leave the shooter's hand and we register Turnover for the shooter, Steal for the blocker.
When the shot is altered (1st. Photograph), the ball leaves the shooter's hand and we register a missed shot for the shooter and a Steal (Block) for the blocker.

"... An offensive player cross the court passing the lane through, a defender make contact with him but the referee calls the foul on another defensive player saying that this player pushed the teammate who contacted the offensive player.
I was in the conviction that the fouls was always on the player who makes the contact, that's means the player who pushes the opponent against the rules. ..."
eBA Basketball Statistical Commentary:
At the beginning the rules were as you relate: pushing a teammate in order to make him to contact an opponent, the player who pushed was responsible of the foul.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Linear Weights

There are several different types of linear weights out there, some of which have names.
TENDEX is the most common name, though the formula associated with this name depends on who is using it: see Formulas Revision in the Formulas section of our site.
Basically linear weights claims to obtain points or a mark from a formula (see our TENDEX at: eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ).

The result is scaled by a factor that accounts for whether the team or player played at faster or slower pace than normal, by a simple example.

Additional Comments about the Prouty Rating

The Prouty rating is a simple, yet effective, method of rating players which is based on averaging four areas: 'Offensive Efficiency', 'Total Offense', 'Possessions' and 'Win Rating'.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System relates this rating but does not applies it.
The various individual parts of the Prouty rating, you can read the formula in my post here: Basketball Statistical Formulas: The Prouty Rating, are based on a per minute basis and if you study the formula in the eBA Basketball Statistics Register Clinic, you'll see that there are four main sections:

• the Offensive Efficiency ( how many points you score per shot );
• the Points Per Minute ( how many points you score or help others score per minute );
• the Possessions Per Minute ( how many possessions you gain or lose your team per minute ); and
• the Win Effect ( how responsible you are to your team's win percentage, based on minutes per game ).

Friday Press Clippings:
The Value of Skepticism

From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' The Value of Skepticism & the Einstein's Theory of Relativity ' by David Friedman
"... Einstein's Theory of Relativity has led to countless scientific breakthroughs and greatly increased our understanding of the universe, yet physicists are still constantly running experiments to test it and make sure that it provides the most valid description of how gravitational fields work.
This is because real science is based on skepticism, doubt and questioning--not credulity, certainty and censorship of opposing ideas. ..."
"... The original author of the Arenas piece never really directed addressed my points--let alone attempt to refute them--but some other people offered their opinions and I have been responding to those comments over the past few days. ..."
"... The Basketball Reference.com blog used to contain a link to 20 Second Timeout but, oddly, after I posted my most recent comment there I noticed that the sidebar link to 20 Second Timeout had been removed. ... "
"... That's too bad, because the truth is that if the "stat gurus" refuse to listen to valid criticisms regarding their methodologies and conclusions then it is unlikely that they will ever achieve their goal of better understanding basketball (if, in fact, that is really their goal). ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
A Generalized Continuous Typology Of Playing Styles

"...To identify each player’s style is conceptually simple, but computationally somewhat more complex. ..."
The obvious question is whether players stay roughly the same from year to year over their careers, and if they don’t then to see if there’s a predictable pattern of movement.
"... These numbers are interesting on their own, but for the calculation of an index of style, they require further manipulation. In the league as a whole, the Scorer percentage is around 50%, the Perimeter percentage around 20%, and Interior 30%.

Thus, if using these percentages, the vast majority of players would appear to be very scoring-centered.
My concern here, in constructing a useful index, is to identify player propensities relative to other players, and for that, I calculate the percentile of each player’s percentages. ..."
Read the full analysis here: NBA playing style spectrum.
The graph shows the players relationships in a unique way. This fact lead me into a question, if the original style of play created by a group of players is due to that group relationship or is it just coincidence !

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Try For Field Goal - Act Of Shooting
"... What happens at the game and at the stats sheet when the throw of player A1 from behind the three-point line is deflected while on flight an opponent player or a teammate, both of whom located inside the three-point line ? ..."
eBA Basketball Statistical Fundamentals:
When the ball is thrown (passed) in the direction of the basket from behind the three point line with the possibility of entering the basket from above, is deflected by a defender located inside the three-point line, if the goal is successful, a three-point goal shall be registered.

"... A few words about “Give and Go: Basketball as a Cultural Practice” by Thomas McLaughlin. Through lunch, I read through a section grappling with the concept of whether your basketball team represents you. Mc Laughlin writes about how some basketball communities are organized on a local level. |
“They have a local history, with traditions and shared rituals, ways of thinking and feeling developed within an ongoing set of common experiences.
They operate under the assumption that their team represents them, that it articulates in a public spectacle the lived experience of the local community… fans commit their communal emotions to a team on a belief that they are playing by proxy, that they themselves have a stake in the outcome of the contest.”

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
The Rebound Rate Formula & the Rebounder Teammates

Frequently, new basketball statisticians ask me about the rebound rate formula.
They don't succeed to see where this method make correspondent and compatible with the quality of the rebounder teammates...
And, as always, I forward them to our eBA Basketball Statistics Encyclopedia to study the issue and find the answers to their questions...

"... Rebound Rate doesn't report for the degree of excellence of a player's teammates.
It is just the percentage of rebounds the player catched out of those accessible for him -- it does not take into consideration who you were contending for these rebounds.
That player teammates certainly have an effect upon that value, but the formula doesn't tell us how statistically significant it is. ..."

How to Scout a Basketball Game

From Associated Content
By Bill Hanks
Download source here: ' How to Scout a Basketball Game ' by Bill Hanks
"... Usually a scout will arrive as inconspicuously as they could to a game. They find a good place to sit where nobody will bother them.
However, a good and loyal fan will recognize them immediately. The scout will do his work and then make it a point to leave before the game is over. However, when they leave, they make it a point to be seen by everybody in the gym.
It is almost like saying, "this game doesn't matter, so I am leaving." If the game didn't matter, then why are they there scouting? ..."
"... As the game begins, count the number of players on the bench and court. Match them up with those on your program. Are they all there?
If not, find out why. Make notes of the gum itself. Checkout things like cleanliness of the floor, lighting, scoreboard, bench location, traffic of the crowd, closeness of the crowd, where do the cheerleaders stand, dressing room locations, and security.
Which basket do they like to shoot at? All of these are minor but, could become major factors, if you play there. ..."
"... Lastly, don't leave before the game is over. It is rude and shows a lack of class. Besides that, you might learn something about a last second shot for the game.
Knowing how to defense this could be the difference in winning or losing your game. Also after the game is over, see if the players are good sports or if there is any confrontations.
This helps because it could protect your players in heated situations. ... "
"... A good scout will realize that they can't solve everything. But, it does help prepare your team for your contest with them.
If you can disrupt their offense or defense by taking away one or two things, it could go a long way in winning your game. ..."
