Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year !
This year, as we blow out the 13 candles on our anniversary cake, our positive thoughts go to all daily visitors, registered members, partners and colleagues who have confided in our talent and supported us over this thirteen years of successful activities.
The history of the eBA Stats Group is well-documented in our sites, including 'our old sweet home' corner at our eBA Portal.
But rather, if we consider our 13 years with a candle pattern, it might be of some value to remember a development per candle as we blow out them all in celebration...
In the frame of mind of top-13 lists then, let's do a candle countdown, each candle representing an important moment since the birth of the eBA Stats network age.
Candle Thirteen: Thirteen years ago this evening, on 24 December 1998, 20:00 GMT, a really scary big button in an old 386 Computer was pressed and the eBA-Stats.com Website went online for the first time....
Candle Twelve: This Website was the first component of the actual Basketball Statistical Creative Analysis eBA Stats Group, nowadays a group of 11 Websites !, and from a start of hits numbered in the thousands, the sites now get almost 20 million hits a year.
Candle Eleven: The Basketball Statistics Forums site from the eBA Stats Group, surpassed this year the number of 5,000 involved members and is the most active basketball statistics analysis forum in the web with an average of 1,000 unique visitors a day !
Most of the threads are reaching the 100,000 views !
Friday Press Clippings:
Wilt Chamberlain: The Numbers Don't Lie

From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Wilt Chamberlain: The Numbers Don't Lie ' by David Friedman
"... Many of the things asserted by basketball "stat gurus" offend my ears (and mind) more than the sound of long fingernails scraping a chalkboard but one piece of nonsense that particularly bothers me is when a "stat guru" attempts to "normalize" one player's numbers to supposedly determine how that player would have performed in a different era.
For instance, a popular "stat guru" declaration is that Michael Jordan's 37.1 ppg average in the 1986-87 season--when "adjusted" for pace--is actually superior to Wilt Chamberlain's record-shattering 50.4 ppg average in the 1961-62 season. There are many problems with this deceptively simple comparison: ..."
"... There is a big difference between saying that Jordan's 37.1 ppg is proportionally greater than Chamberlain's 50.4 ppg based on pace and definitively asserting that Jordan's 1986-87 scoring feat was greater than Chamberlain's--but basketball "stat gurus" have no qualms about making extraordinary claims without providing extraordinary proof, which is the very opposite of the approach that authentic scientists and researchers take ..."
"... In my pro basketball Pantheon I did not attempt to rank players from different eras but simply selected the 10 players who excelled when compared to the players from their own eras; how much a player dominates his own time is a significant indication of true greatness. ..."
"... Pace alone is not an adequate explanation for how far Chamberlain's records are ahead of not just what any other pro basketball players have accomplished but also how much more dominant his performances are than the record-setting performances of all-time greats in other sports. ..."
"... Robertson is right that it is important not just that NBA history be told but that it be told by competent people; my contribution to that effort is displayed in the right hand sidebar of this website and I truly hope that someday my hard work and dedication to preserving and telling these stories will reach the widest possible audience, supplanting the gossip and nonsense that poses as journalism today at far too many magazines and websites. ..."

Before any player from Team B is handed the ball, Team B's Coach is called a technical foul for some reason, let's say an illegal player's change ( ... or throwing a chair across the floor ...).

West by West: My Charmed, Tormented Life by Jerry West and Jonathan Coleman A pressure-embracing superstar with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1960s and 1970s, West (called “Mr. Clutch”) was so revered that the NBA used his silhouette for its famed logo. After a legendary Hall of Fame playing career, West became the Lakers’ general manager, helping to assemble squads that won eight world championships in the 1980s and 2000s. Such lofty accomplishments did little to abate a self-destructive competitive spirit and crippling bouts of depression, the results of a miserable childhood in West Virginia. |
West’s beloved older brother, David, was killed in the Korean War; their father regularly beat the skinny, younger, West, inspiring a murderous, unforgiving hatred.
“And the real enemy is myself, “ writes West, in this candid and self-reflecting autobiography.
That willingness to share, however, extends little beyond his tortured soul, as he holds back in detailing his occasionally tense relationships with coaches like Phil Jackson and Pat Riley and storied players such as Kobe Bryant (who declined to be interviewed for the book).
West’s reluctance to detail his dealings with others coupled with the authors’ anecdotal style lead to a lack of perspective and narrative heft that doesn’t befit the rich, complex life of such an iconic sports figure.

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
When we record an assist in the following cases ? ~ Concept & Statistics
"... When is it an assist according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in the following cases ?
1 - Team A is passing the ball around the perimeter and A2 (the last player to touch the ball) makes a 3 from the corner. Does A1, the teammate who passed him the ball and asked the ball in return, get an assist ?
2 - A3 inbounds the ball (after a made opponent basket) passing to his teammate A4 an all-the-court pass away. A4 (behind the defense) dribbles once and then dunks the ball. Does A3 get an assist ?
3 - A5 is dribbling around outside, he drops the ball into A7 in the post. A7 dribbles a bit (dribble of a center), tries to shake his defender, succeeds and scores. Does A5 get an assist ? ... "

Case 1: Without any doubts, register an assist to A1. If A2 miss the shot and A1 was in a very good shooting position, therefore, this is a 'Potential Assist' from A2.
Case 2: Without any doubts, register an assist to A3. Certainly, from an outbounds situation there is no possibility of 'Potential Assist' if A4 misses the shot, but it is case of 'Missed Assist'.
Case 3: We have to see the play, generally the live statistics does not register at all an assist in this case. The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, applies the following rule:
if A7 is well covered and gets himself open, then no assist. In all the other circumstances, we register A5 with an assist.

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
November 2011 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Attempting to Make a Throw-in... Case Study
" ... A1 is holding the ball out of bounds and is attempting to make a throw-in. However, the inbounds pass ...
(a) lodges on the rim,
(b) comes to rest on the flange of the basket, or
(c) goes through the basket.
What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"
Conclusion:
Basketball Statistics Philosophy:
The purpose of a turnover is to reflect statistically the times in which a team was given the ball and should have gotten some kind of shot but, before it could get any kind of shot, made some type of mistake that turned the ball over to the opponent.
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
A turnover can only be charged against the offense; that is, the team with the ball. A team becomes the team with the ball when it has control (including during free throws) or is entitled to the ball for either a throw-in or a free throw.
There will be some errors that will not result in the charging of a turnover because they did not involve the turning of the ball over to the opponent.
Errors that occur at approximately the same time a team becomes entitled to the ball should not be considered turnovers.
The team should have time to realize it has the ball before being charged with turnovers.
eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:
• In all cases, this is a violation and Team B will be awarded the ball. Charge A1 with a FORCED TURNOVER, but no field-goal attempt;
• in (c) the basket does not count, so no field goal made or attempted should be charged.
This Case Study was presented as every 15th. day of each month, on November 15th, 2011 in our eBA Portal: were sent 1,267 answers, 116 partial answers and 985 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.
was awarded to those who submitted the correct answers !

Each season is covered in plentiful detail, with a special focus on the top teams, great players, and postseason performance.
"... The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) recently voted to admit two new members, the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University, which will bring the number of schools in the league to 14.
There is a great deal of speculation that the conference would like to add two more members to make divisions of eight teams each, which is a logical step for scheduling purposes.
But a little historical perspective on the history of the ACC should give pause to advocates of expansion. ..."

Friday Press Clippings:
Commisioner Stern Should Not Have Voided the Chris Paul Trade

From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Commisioner Stern Should Not Have Voided the Chris Paul Trade ' by David Friedman
"... Remember the old Saturday Night Live skit about "Bad Idea Jeans"? The NBA created a real-life version a year ago when it assumed ownership of the troubled New Orleans Hornets franchise.
What could possibly go wrong when the league office--which is supposed to impartially run the NBA's affairs without showing favor to any team or player--is in charge of a specific team? ..."
"... After word of the proposed deal had already leaked out, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that the league had voided the entire transaction, supposedly for "basketball reasons."
There is much speculation about who may have pressured Stern to take this action: perhaps "small market" owners do not want to see the Lakers profit at the expense of the Hornets or perhaps "large market" owners do not want to see Paul go to the Lakers because they had their own designs to woo Paul either now or after this season. ..."
"... The Dream Team was fun to watch in 1992 in the Olympics but if the NBA's rules permitted a handful of wealthy owners to buy up all of the elite players then the NBA would indeed become nothing more than the Harlem Globetrotters versus the Washington Generals.
Abbott and others say that competitive balance has never existed in NBA history but that depends on how you define competitive balance with regard to pro basketball. ..."
"... However, the actual skill set evaluation of the proposed Chris Paul trade is going to be largely ignored because of the serious implications of how the trade was cancelled.
I wonder how many casual NBA fans even realized that the NBA has owned the Hornets for the past year, let alone thought about all of the potential ramifications of this: not only is it a bad idea for a league to own a team but the fact that for more than a year the NBA has searched in vain for a suitable owner tends to reinforce the contention that the league did in fact have a broken business model under the terms of the old CBA. ..."
"... The NBA may be back but it is hardly in good shape: the compressed 66 game season is going to be tough to watch--featuring a lot of out of shape and/or fatigued players--and whatever happens on the court is likely to attract less attention than the off court dramas surrounding Howard and Paul. ..."

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview.
38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrators James Braithwaite and Alex Kurina have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack.
A spellbinding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short and won the 2009 Emmy for 'New Approaches' (making it the first film to win an Emmy on behalf of the internet).

2 Seconds To Go, 2 Points Ahead and Last Free Throw
...A well known game situation: 2 seconds to go, 2 points ahead and last free throw. The player intentionally misses the free-throw according with the indications from the bench to avoid a complete 2 seconds possession for the opponent. He succeed and they win the game. Can this action be registered in such way that we don't "punish" the shooter's Tendex with a -1 because of the missed free throw ?
What is the Statistics Tracking Rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book ? ...
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
If you are performing the analysis by means of video, and you are not sure about those "bench indications". you have no alternative and must register the missed free-throw.

If you were present at this game, and you heard or saw clearly the coach's indications, you may use the "Team Player" option to register the missed throw, registering this action in the "play-by-play" report.

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
The Basketball Team Rebounds ~ Concept & Statistics
What exactly comprises and means a 'team rebound' ?
In each situation a shot is taken and missed and possession may or may not change, but the rebound cannot be credited to an individual so it counts as a 'team rebound' for whichever team is awarded the ball.
A team rebound is awarded to the opponent team to the player who attempted the shot if, before the buzzer sounded, no player had gained control of the rebound.
A team rebound is awarded to the team to which the ball is awarded out of bounds or at the free throw line as a result of a missed field goal attempt or a final free throw attempt. This includes circumstances when:
- the ball goes out of bounds without any player having secured possession;
- a final free attempt from a serial misses the rim;
- the shooter commits a free throw violation in a a final free attempt from a serial;
- a loose ball foul is called immediately following a missed field goal attempt or final free throw attempt;
- a last technical foul shot missed.

Photograph: Basketball Notes by Alex
A team rebound is awarded to a team that first gains possession following a jump ball when such a jump ball immediately follows a missed field goal attempt or a final free throw attempt, before any player is credited with an individual rebound.
A team rebound is awarded following a missed shot ( either field goal or last free throw ) when a live ball becomes dead due to the expiration of a period. A team rebound is credited to the opponent team to the player who attempted that shot.
About the differences between the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System and the NBA statistician's rules, for example, are developed in the eBA Clinics, and we'll discuss them in a next message in the eBA Forums.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Second Chance Points

As you surely noticed, the participants at the eBA CLINICS ONLINE rewrite, correct, enhance and update every thread at our Basketball Statistics Forums, as part of their practical work. Now we are merging all the unitary messages and similar ones in a common thread ( thus reducing the number of topics ): and the threads are categorized according to the eBA Basketball Analysis System contents, which is a more practical approach to the search at the Basketball Statistics Study Forums.
"....When a team shoots a high percentage from the floor, the number of second chance opportunities will distinctly be smaller, but the efficiency of the second chance possession is not a function of the number of second chance opportunities in a game.
Consequently, if teams have higher efficiency during second chances than first chances, a team's game efficiency, taking all the different aspects into account, is nearly always increased only because the offensive rebounding. By contrast, since that relationship appears alternating, the important objective of collecting and evaluating data is in the bonus possessions produced by the net offensive rebounding differential.
A well balanced team would be more effective on second chance points than on first chance points because, on most first chance possessions, the defense is accomplished and the offensive team must attack the set defense to find their scoring opportunities.
In whatever manner, with possessions that go on with an offensive rebound, the defense is often lacking order at the instant of the rebound, and these possessions often end with either a foul [the most effective method of scoring] or a tap-in or other relatively easy shot.
Only when the offensive team decides to withdraw the ball back out following an offensive rebound and run its half court offense would the defense have an opportunity to reset itself.
Concisely, to resume this post, teams obtain more easy scores in second chance possessions than in first chance possessions, so they must be registered and analyzed as it was explained and is included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System. ...." Friday Press Clippings:
The Tempo-Free Basketball Statistics

From Black Shoe Diaries
By Eric Gibson
Download source here: ' The Tempo-Free Basketball Statistics ' by Eric Gibson
"... Coach Chambers is trying to change the perception of Penn State basketball, so I'm going to take a stab at increasing the knowledge of Penn State basketball fans.
This will be BSD's introduction into tempo-free statistics for the game of basketball.
Hopefully some of you will have seen some of this lingo before around the interwebs and already understand it. ..."
"... Who are the masterminds? The pioneer of modern tempo-free analysis is Dean Oliver. He wrote Basketball On Paper in 2002 and proceeded to become the first person to land a full-time statistical analyst position in the NBA. ..."
"... What are Tempo-Free Stats? To be quite simple, they are what they say they are, free of tempo. The tempo of the game of basketball can obviously influence any of the traditional statistics like points, rebounds, and assists.
If there are more possessions in a game, there will be more shots (and misses), leading to more points, rebounds and assists, and so on. Quantifying the pace of a game allows us to proportion traditional statistics, so that they're fairly assessed across the board. ..."
"... Efficiency: This statistic is a true measure of a team's offensive and defensive ability. It is measured in two ways, although I just primarily use one. The method I like to reference is Points-Per-Possession, which as it says, takes points divided by a game's possessions.
A team's offensive/defensive 'rating' or 'efficiency' is the other measure which takes points scored per 100 possessions. Usually breaking even is the average mark for these two statistics. Anything under 1.00 or 100 is good defense/bad offense, and vice-versa. ..."
"... This is a very raw introduction to TFS (also known as APBRmetrics), but these are the most commonly cited statistics, while offering a good primer to grasp the basic concept.
You might come across different numbers for these statistics on other websites, but easily the go-to source for TFS is KenPom's site.
His numbers for some of these stats are going to be different than if you calculate them yourself with the equations I listed. ..."
"... TFS can also be applied individually to players. That would take another 1,000 words to explain, so you can just refer to KenPom as he explains all the wonderful stats he compiles on each team's page.
If you're really interested, just start browsing through his archives to see some of the crazy stuff he comes up with, like an automated scheduler that would raise interest in hoops at the beginning of the year or the minute-by-minute win probability graphs he tracks for every D-1 game. ..."

NBA Lockout Enters "Nuclear Winter"

From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' NBA Lockout Enters "Nuclear Winter" ' by David Friedman
"... The NBA lockout entered uncharted territory today when the Players Association rejected the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) proposal. Players Association Executive Director Billy Hunter and Players Association President Derek Fisher did not submit the league's offer to a membership vote but instead, after consulting with various lawyers and agents, decided unilaterally to end the collective bargaining process and declared their intention to disclaim interest; decertification, the option the media focused on, is a lengthier process than disclaimer, which is effective immediately. ..."
"... What this means for the fans is simple: it is very unlikely that there will be a 2011-2012 NBA season. This should not shock anyone who has followed this situation; the NBA lockout has proceeded much like I predicted it would months ago when I said that it would last "until the owners and players agree to fundamentally restructure the league's failing business model." ..."
"... It is interesting that many mainstream media commentators have completely taken the players' side. I understand the argument that the players create a lot of value with their unique talents and thus deserve to be highly compensated and I also understand that some people are skeptical of the NBA's accounting (or of accounting methods in general) but it is mystifying that some people apparently believe that the NBA owners should operate under a business model which results in them losing money or that the owners should be obligated to pay out well over 50% of their revenues when they are not making a profit. ..."
"... The players and their media sycophants keep saying that the players cannot be expected to "give back" any more money to help the owners. Not only does this assertion indicate a failure to understand the collective bargaining process--the players are not "giving back" anything but rather negotiating a new CBA in the wake of the expiration of the previous CBA--but it fails to acknowledge the reality of the economic situation. ..."
"... If the players are not willing to sacrifice their "guaranteed profitability" then they are in no position to criticize the owners--each of whom has invested substantial capital--for wanting to correct a business model that resulted in two thirds of the teams not being profitable. Another unreasonable expectation that the players have is that in addition to their "guaranteed profitability" they also want to have tremendous freedom to go to any other team. ..."
"... I fully realize that the NBA will never adopt the tiered system mentioned above but the point is that what the players are asking for is completely out of touch with reality. They don't seem to understand that millions of Americans are struggling to just get by and that it is unseemly to force the NBA to cancel the season because NBA players can't feed their children on $8 million per year. ..."
"... Taking the players' side in this dispute means believing the following things:
1) The NBA has a healthy business model even though the San Antonio Spurs--arguably the best managed team in the league, if not all of professional sports--are losing money (according to Forbes the Spurs lost $4.7 million in 2009-10, the last season for which complete data is available).
2) An agreement that would result in an average annual salary of $8 million per year is tantamount to enslaving the NBA's players. ..."

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Statistical Classification

In machine learning, statistical classification is the problem of identifying the sub-population to which new observations belong, where the identity of the sub-population is unknown, on the basis of a training set of data containing observations whose sub-population is known.
Therefore these classifications will show a variable behaviour which can be studied by statistics.
Thus the requirement is that new individual items are placed into groups based on quantitative information on one or more measurements, traits or characteristics, etc. and based on the training set in which previously decided groupings are already established.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About Statistics & Statisticians... and Coaches that "are NOT stats guys"

"... It is correct that we have coaches that "are not stats guys", that only trust what they see, and they think they don't need a bunch of numbers to get in the way.
Others, use stats in various ways and are many which can speak about a tendex type formula.
Most of us, being in the basketball statistics analysis theme, and specially the analysis area, begin to understand that Basketball is a difficult game to quantify, in some degree because of the way the game changes through time, and partially because of the powerful impact of teamwork, with the constant moving interaction of 12 players and the ball. ..."

"... We are the same people which understand that at some level, we use the available information to better understand the game: no one stat can explain everything, so the combination of the numbers and the plays appreciation, eBA statistics analysis basis, is by this time the correct way......"
"... Now, we know that Basketball has a lot of difficult areas of quantitative information when we translate a game into statistics. For example, categories as "allowed points - from 2, 3 and PF bonus"; "offensive rebounds allowed"; "turnovers - that aren't steals" and "good and bad personal fouls" - see our complete list of statistical analysis categories here, which are included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, are not accounted in the traditional statistical methods, specially those made at live game time.
Gathering and analyzing those categories of data will give us a sort of information, for example, about how many unguarded shots - no fast breaks plays - were taken by the opponents, and how many were allowed to us. This kind of info is the correct way in evaluating defense. ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Reflections about Statistics Lies, Uses and Misuses of Statistical Graphics

Last saturday, at the weekly meeting of the eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking Annual Clinic we were discussing the topic of the statistics lies which was initiated by the exposition "Statistics & Statisticians" at eBA ONLINE.
Here is the opinion of Paul H. Kvam and Joel Sokol from their work "Teaching Statistics with Sports Examples":
Statistical lies are most frequently committed in graphical form, where the eyes can be more easily deceived by spurious trends suggested in a picture. A common abuse is manipulating scales on charts and graphs by truncating, censoring or transforming the axis values.
The next figure shows two different charts showing an increase in average attendance at NCAA Women's Soccer games between 1998 and 2003. The first (blue)chart is the default Microsoft Excel chart; many statistical software packages, in fact, will restrict both axes to a small set of values that contains the data, which helps the reader focus on chart differences more clearly. However, it also removes the scale of difference from the picture, which has potential to mislead readers who pay little attention to the axis labels.
Two different charts showing average attendance
at NCAA Women's Soccer (season) matches
The reader's sense of proportion can be manipulated further with image-based charts, which are standard in sports publications. As an example, the figure below graphs the season wins for the New England Patriots using clip-art in place of vertical bars.

Regular season wins for the New England Patriots, 2002-2003
While the height of the football icons corresponds to the information the graph is meant to communicate, the size of the footballs does not; the Patriots improved 56% in wins between 2002 and 2003, but the increase in area of the football icons is over 140%.

Friday Press Clippings:
The Perfect Futility of Basketball Analytics

From New York Times.com
By Rob Mahoney
Download source here: ' The Perfect Futility of Basketball Analytics ' by Rob Mahoney
"... Those in the world of basketball analytics are tasked with the impossible: to convert a complex game of interrelated and inextricable factors into simple measures of player and team performance.
There’s no question that the efforts to develop those measures have intensified in the last few years, but despite every advance toward the coveted “one-number metric” –- a single rating that can accurately describe a player’s impact on the floor or a team’s relative standing -– basketball’s answer to sabermetrics comes with limitations and caveats.
No stat in basketball is perfect, regardless of the complexity of its formulation. ..."
"... The defining contribution of advanced stats in the N.B.A. won’t be some magical number that makes bar stool debates irrelevant.
That goal is a noble one, but wasn’t described as “impossible” in the paragraph above for rhetorical emphasis alone; in all likelihood, it can’t be done.
Basketball has too many convoluted variables for any quantitative analyst to devise an end-all value measure. ..."
"... The status quo is never good enough, and the way we think about and examine the game can always be improved upon.
That’s always been the case, but only by accepting the limitations of the current analysis are we able to push forward. ..."
"... Each of those measures should be treated as if it has the potential to be the mythical one-number metric.
Not because that goal is reachable or possible in any way, but because the level of criticism and creativity that often follows will take the collective understanding of the game further. ..."
"... Those who fail to see the big picture will focus on the mark that the asymptotic curve of basketball analytics will never reach, while ignoring all other growth in the process.
The measures themselves are imperfect, but they’re perfect in promoting further research.
None of the advanced stats we have today are ideal, but they bring us closer to the pinnacle of our comprehension of the N.B.A. ..."
"... Discussing the recent quantitative advances in basketball as the “analytics movement” or the “advanced stats movement” is inaccurate.
Movements have points of conclusion, either because they meet their goals or due to complete dissolution, but what the analytics world has introduced into the game is capable of enduring forever.
The one-number metric is a red herring. Intellectual curiosity and the insatiable appetite for better statistics are the real products of the basketball analytic culture. ..."

Carolina Basketball: A Century of Excellence By Adam Lucas With Foreword by Dean Smith, and Afterword by Roy Williams North Carolina State loyalists might take offense, but Adam Lucas' Carolina Basketball focuses exclusively on one team and it isn't the Wolfpack. Like NCS, North Carolina University has a century-long basketball tradition. (As Lucas notes, it didn't begin propitiously: In its first season, the Tarheels were forced to request the return of the team's stolen basketball.) |
Boasting six national championships and scores of Hall of Fame coaches and players, Carolina Basketball has come a long way from the first season--when the campus newspaper published a notice asking an unknown culprit to return the team's basketball.
With stories, sidebars, and over 200 photos, this 256-page history covers the first hundred years of one of college basketball's greatest teams.

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About The Grinnell College System Principles

Grinnell College is a small liberal arts college in Grinnell, Iowa, USA. It was founded in 1846, when a group of transplanted New England Congregationalists with a strong social-reformer orientation formed the 'Trustees of Iowa College'.
Grinnell basketball teams is one of the teams with more offensive records in the high school national level - NCAA - Midwest Conference - Division III - and in February 2005, Grinnell became the first Division III school to broadcast a non-championship basketball game on national television when it faced off against the Beloit Buccaneers on ESPN 2.
Grinnell College's basketball team attracted ESPN's due to the team's unique style of playing basketball, known simply as "The System."
In a fashion much like an ice hockey match, Coach David Arsseneault's "system" incorporates a continual full-court press, a fast-paced offense with a lot of fast-breaks, shooting in less than 12 seconds after a ball steal, an emphasis on offensive rebounding, a barrage of three-point shots, and substitutions of five players at a time every 35 to 40 seconds, playing between 15 to 17 players every game.
"The System" has been criticized for not teaching the principles of defense, in spite of the pressing defenses which are applied.

Photograph: from "College Fanz"
However, under "The System," Grinnell has won three conference championships over the past ten years and have regularly placed in the top half of the conference.
Coach Arseneault's teams have also set numerous NCAA scoring records and several individuals on the Grinnell team have led the nation in scoring, steals or assists. In the 2008 season the team was first with 117.3 points and 16 steals per game.
These are the principal 5 principles of "The System":
The team must shoot at least 94 times per game; At least half of this shoots must be from three points; Minimum we must throw to the basket 25 times more than the opponent; Offensive rebounds must be at least a 33% of the total of our throws; The team must force the opponent to 32 turnovers with a pressing defense.
There is no relation from this "system" with our eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, out of it's application in the statistical data analysis.

The Hustle: One Team and Ten Lives in Black and White by Doug Merlino Expecting a conventional basketball book? Look elsewhere... ! Although the central focus is ten members of a biracial boys basketball team, freelance journalist Doug Merlino, in his first book, is writing about race relations and the changing socioeconomic experiences and expectations of five black and five white kids who came together in 1986 to form an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team in Seattle. |
The book provides remarkable insight into the fortunes and misfortunes of the ten kids who shared a court but never a dream. For Merlino, who was on the team, the titular hustle is the drive to achieve in today's competitive economy. Readers will witness the omnipresent racial divide in Seattle and the nation, in the workplace, and in a secondary school setting.
The chapter on Seattle's Lakeside School, a private K-12 institution, is compelling reading for today's parents and educators. The former teammates whom Merlino traced up to the present include a prosecutor, a financial manager, a preacher/teacher, a writer, a street hustler—and a murder victim.
VERDICT: This book, both memoir and social analysis, is an essential read as a recent social history and personal story of America.

10 Most Useless Statistics in Professional Sports

That’s because nothing conveys an understanding of, an abiding reverence for, and an unassailable expertise in, our favorite athletic pastimes than quoting lots of stats. ..."
"... More insidious are those “official” stats by which an athlete’s value is actually measured, yet really don’t tell us much. Here is my list of the 10 most useless statistics in professional sports: ..."
"... Wins (by a Pitcher) – The idea that a pitcher has that much determination in whether his team wins or loses defies reason. Example ..."
"... Time of Possession – This statistic was intended to be indicative of a football team’s ability to control the ball and, by extension, the outcome of the game. How often, though, ..."
"... Holds (by a Middle Reliever) – This stat is supposed to reflect the effectiveness of middle relief or set-up pitchers in a save situation, but ..."
"... Saves (by a Closer) – For much the same reasons as with the above stat, really. This one is simply awarded to the guy who pitches last for the winning team. The parameters are arbitrary and ..."
"... QB Rating – Impressive at least insofar as its herculean effort to quantify a quarterback’s value. But honestly, does anyone actually understand how this rating is quantified? ..."
"... MVP – Apart from being chosen via purely subjective criteria, Most Valuable Players tend to come from teams that have the most success. While this may seem logical at first blush, it doesn’t take into consideration the fact that the more successful teams generally aren’t that reliant on just one player. High Intensity Strength Training
Series 4-Pack
By Michael Bradley
"... Bring up the topic of the exercise methodology called High Intensity Training by Michael Bradley amongst strength coaches and athletes, and you’ll get a wide range of opinions and no shortage
of passion.
This style of training is controversial in some circles, and the only way to train in others.
The merits of HIT have been debated for almost forty years, and
to this day discussions of the subject can bring the proponents and opponents of HIT to the point of a blowup.
High Intensity Training starts with effort, truly maxim effort. You’ll find that if you train to a point of maximum effort, there’s a limit to both the amount of sets of an exercise that you can do productively and the total amount of sets you can do in a workout.
And if you train very hard -- hard enough to force your body to adapt -- then you’ll find that you’ll have to take more time to recover from that training. It’ll become obvious that you can’t train every day. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Avoiding Out of Bounds Ball & Shooting Case Statistical Tracking
... During a game the ball was going out-of-bounds on the sideline near the baseline on the A Team end of the court. An A Team player tried to save the ball by throwing it forcefully into the legs of a B Team defender so it would bounce out off of him. The B Team defender dodged the ball, which bounced high and:
1) The ball goes in;
2) Almost went into the basket (it hit the rim) and finally goes out;
The A team player was behind the 3 point line when he threw the ball.

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Dean Oliver's Four Factors Concepts

"... Essentially, the four factors are the building blocks to the efficiency formula.
Efficiency data gives you an idea of the quality of a team’s offense or defense, but the four factors tell you why a team is good or bad when they have or don’t have the ball.
Here’s a breakdown of how each statistic on this concept is calculated…
Effective field goal percentage is like regular field goal percentage except that it gives 50% more credit for made three-pointers.
eFG% = (.5*3FGM + FGM) / FGA
Turnover percentage is a pace-independent measure of ball security.
TO% = TO / Possessions
Offensive rebounding percentage is a measure of the possible rebounds that are gathered by the offense.
OR% = OR / (OR + DRopp)

Keep in mind that rebounding percentage is computed from box score data which does not contain team rebounds. Therefore, the figures shown here may differ slightly from calculations made on the rebounding totals provided by a team.
Finally, free throw rate captures a team’s ability to score from the line.
FTRateoff = FTM / FGA
FTRatedef = FTA / FGA
Defensive FTRate uses FTA in the numerator since the defense has little control on the percentage of free throw attempts made by the opposition.
The four factors concept is based on the research from Dean Oliver, author of the book and eBook Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis, and you can read Dean’s more detailed explanation of the four factors in the exposition by Prof. Roberto Azar from eBA-Stats about "Basketball Formulas Revision" in eBA ONLINE CLINICS....."

The incident, he believes, surely spared the then sixteen-year-old African American from prison and/or an early death. It transformed him in other ways, too. He attended college and made wheelchair basketball his passion - ultimately becoming a star athlete and playing on the U.S. National Wheelchair Basketball Team. |
In "Wheelchair Warrior", Melvin Juette re-constructs the defining moments of his life with the assistance of sociologist Ronald Berger.
His poignant memoir is bracketed by Ronald J. Berger's thoughtful introduction and conclusion, which places this narrative of race, class, masculinity, and identity into proper sociological context, showing how larger social structural forces defined Juette's experiences.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Game and the Numbers ...we don't care if you never score !

"We don't care if you never score a point, If you make plays and help your team win, you don't have to score..." says Wayne Winston, a professor in the Operations and Decisions Technology Department at Indiana University.
"Use the mathematical tools of quantitative analysis to go beyond the box score and discover the hidden factors that contribute to victory..."

"You couldn't run a team completely on statistics, but anybody from the old school who doesn't pay attention to them is probably in the wrong.
Everyone's looking for an edge. And this kind of information can give you one..."
"The game moves so fast that unless you have somebody tabulating this and analyzing it properly, you're just not going to know. A lot of coaches think they know more than they do....."
"Basketball's a team sport, and lots of things aren't tracked," Winston says. "Like taking the charge, going through a screen, tipping a ball to your teammate, saving a ball from going out of bounds....."
"The information is a good reference point, but unlike in baseball where there are definable variables that enable a team to select players wisely, there are no such variables identified yet in Basketball. Personally, I think it's because we don't collect the right data..."
These refections are included in the module edited at the eBA Clinics about "Statistics & Statisticians"

Why Better Teams Lose ?

From Hoop Theory
By David
Download source here: ' Why Better Teams Lose ? ' by David
"... Matt once told me that “the biggest fallacy in sports is that the better team will win.” This is an interesting statement, especially in light of the unexpected results from the early rounds of the NBA Playoffs this year. Matt’s statement can be understood in two ways. ..."
"... The second way to look at Matt’s fallacy is actually more interesting. Variance tells us that the better team won’t always win, but the truth is we don’t know who the better team actually is. To explain this point, it will be helpful to use the playoffs as a vehicle. ..."
"... This means that win-loss records and point differentials are imperfect exogenous indicators of who the better of two teams is. The very nature of being “better” than another team is relative; it depends entirely on the comparison between the two teams.
Knowing how well each team played against the rest of the league tells us something, and is often a good indicator of who will win between two teams, but it’s not perfect, and nuance escapes it. ..."
"... We could look at how two teams played against each other during the regular season, but the sample size is just too small to say anything meaningful.
The 4 games two conference rivals play during the regular season do not give us enough data to say meaningful things about which team is superior, and we have even less data on individual player matchups.
After factoring in other variables like injuries, fatigue, and varying degrees of effort we aren’t left with much information to make meaningful predictions about a playoff matchup. ..."
"... As Justin has pointed out, we need better ways to manipulate smaller data sets; until we can draw meaningful conclusions from fewer observations we are handicapped in predictive analysis. That doesn’t mean we won’t get there, and this is certainly something we’ll be working on in the future. ..."
"... Each possession has a variance of about 1 point, so if we assume possessions are independent events (not a great assumption and certainly something you should check in the data, but ok as a starting point) the point differential on 800 possessions has a variance of 800 or a standard deviation of about 28.
This overly simple analysis seems to imply that the Mavs may be just as good as the Lakers (even in this particular matchup), but just ran two standard deviations over expectation over the course of the series. Such a 2 sigma event is rare, but might still happen almost 2.5 percent of the time (If they really are equally good teams the Lakers might have beat the Mavs by 56 points over the course of 4 games 2.5 percent of the time). ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Ball against the Backboard... Can this player begin a dribble.... ?
"... A player has not yet dribbled, throws the ball against a backboard and catches it again before the ball has touched another player. ...
Can this player begin a dribble.... ? ..."
Fundamentals of the Basketball Rule=
If a player deliberately throws the ball against a backboard ( not attempting a legitimate shot for a goal ), this is considered the same as if that player has bounced the ball on the floor. If the player then touches the ball again before it has touched ( or been touched by ) another player, this is considered to be the same as a dribble.
Basketball Game Rule=
After catching the ball ( ball comes to rest in his hands ) the player in this case may shoot or pass but may not begin a new dribble.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
In case the player in this case makes a new dribble has committed a violation and we register an unforced turnover.

About the Blocked Shot ~ Blocked or Altered Shot ?

The blocked shots are an area of doubts for the statisticians, how this actions are registered?
The blocked shots as the fact of whether a pass or shot is being attempted, are areas of difficulty for the statistician.
The blocked shots are considered as attempts in the eBA Statistics Tracking only if the offensive player was in the act of shooting before the ball was blocked.
If there is a doubt as to whether the player was intending to shoot, the eBA Statistics Tracking shall be that he was not intending a shot.
By definition (see our Global Basketball Encyclopedia ) a blocked shot occurs when a defensive player successfully and legally deflects a shot from an offensive player by touching and rejecting the ball on its way to the basket, and before it has reached its highest point, in order to prevent from a field goal.
In order to be a legal action, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward. It is heading downward when the defender hits it, it is ruled a goaltending and counts as a made basket.

We have an altered shot when a blocker changes the shooter shot causing the shooter to miss the basket.
In our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System we register a Block Shot when the ball doesn't leave the shooter's hand: Turnover for the player in possession, Steal for the blocker; and we have an Altered Shot when the ball leaves the shooter's hand, so we register a missed shot for the shooter & a steal - block for the defender.

Friday Press Clippings:
Kevin Pelton Blows Minds: Age Adjusted Defensive Efficiency

From Blazer's Edge
By Benjamin Golliver
Download source here: ' Kevin Pelton Blows Minds: Age Adjusted Defensive Efficiency ' by Benjamin Golliver
"... Recently when asked to explain our defensive issues I came up with the following areas for improvement.
Weakside defense.
Handling of pick and rolls.
Recognizing and executing rotations.
Point guard defense.
Lateral defensive speed.
Bad fouls.
Communication.
Closing out on shooters.
So, yeah, Pretty much everything. Likewise, when asked the root of the problems listed above, I wrote. ..."
"... I asked him: "You know how it's easy to subjectively look at young players and notice their defensive faults? And how it's equally easy to look at older players and call them savvy veterans? This seems way too simple. And you know how some people argue that experience is an explanation for a young team's defensive struggles and others mock that argument as simply an excuse? Do you think you could settle that debate? It seems really subjective."
KP2 responded, "You know me. I absolutely hate subjectivity caused by an absence of statistics." He paused, rubbing his fingers on his temples, before continuing, "Numbers are very powerful. They can solve most debates." ..."
"... First things first, KP2 starts with Defensive Efficiency. What's Defensive Efficiency? It's a simple way to measure how succesful teams are at stopping their opponent from scoring.
For example, John Hollinger's Defensive Efficiency rating measures the number of points a team allows per 100 possessions. To see his ratings, you must have ESPN Insider, but to give you an idea: Boston rates 1st, Portland rates 18th and Sacramento rates 30th.
KP2's Defensive Efficiency Rating is very similar to Hollinger's only he adjusts the formula slightly to account for team offensive rebounds. In case you're interested in the specifics, here's what he does... ..."
"... Next he calculated a weighted age for every team at the end of their season (and up to the current point for this season). He did this by taking total minutes played that season for each player on the team.
On the Blazers, a team that features so many rookies in its rotation, the weighted age is quite a bit smaller than nearly every other team from 2001-2002 to the present.
Using weighted age also eliminates any impact of having Raef Lafrentz's Expiring Contract on the inactive list. We are looking only at the weighted ages of players that are on the court producing. ..."
"... AEDR aims to answer the question: based solely on the team's age relative to the rest of the league, what should we expect their defensive efficiency to be? For the Blazers, a young team whose standard defensive efficiency is 109.8, their AEDR is 111.3.
In other words, based solely on the age of their personnel, we should expect the Blazers to play less efficient defense than they actually do.
The next step from Age Expected Defensive Efficiency Ratings is to calculate the real golden goose: Age Adjusted Defensive Efficiency (AADR).
What will AADR answer for us, according to KP2.. ..."
"... There is a demonstrable relationship between age and defensive efficiency. By one measure, we can estimate that age accounts for approximately 18.8% of defensive efficiency when surveying all teams from 2001-2002 to the present.
Age is certainly a factor that should be considered when assessing a team's defense, however coaching and personnel are most likely more critical factors. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Throw-in Crossing the Plane Statistical Tracking
... Some question about throws-in rule and statistical registration:
A1 is awarded a throw-in. While holding the ball, A1's hands crosses the plane of the boundary line so that the ball is above the in-bounds area. B2 catches the ball that is in A1's hands or taps the ball out of A1's hands.
How we rule this situation and register the statistics according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book ? ...
Commentary About the Rule=
Before a thrower-in has released the ball on a throw-in, it is possible that the throwing-in motion could cause that player's hand(s) with the ball to break the plane of the boundary line separating the in-bounds area from the out-of-bounds area. In such situations, it continues to be the responsibility of the defending player to avoid interfering with the throw-in by contacting the ball while it is still in the hands of the thrower-in.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
B2 has interfered with the throw-in, thereby delaying the resuming of the game. A warning shall be given to B2 and communicated to coach B and this warning shall apply to all team B players for the remainder of the game. The repetition of a similar action by any team B player may result in a technical foul.
In the described case in the question, no statistical registration is made, but if it was called a technical foul, a UNFORCED TURNOVER is charged against the offender player in the category "TF".
About the Video Analysis=
One commentary about the rules to resume this topic: the defense may not break the plane of the line, if so they will receive a warning and then a technical foul. If the defense breaks the plane and touches the ball or the player BEFORE THE BALL IS RELEASED across the plane the penalty is a technical foul. When we analyze a basketball game we must have the video analysis help to decide the responsibility of each one of the player in this situation.
All the terms in this answer are explained widely at The eBA Basketball System Book and in eBA Clinic ONLINE.

Video Case Study:
Basketball 3-pointer annulled because 24 seconds
"... Legal 3-pointer annulled: this is the 1998 NBA Finals Game Six - Chicago Bulls 87 Utah Jazz 86. Here you have two cases of shooting over the end of the 24 seconds: in the second case of the clip there is no problem of register. But in the first I have doubts: the basket was annulled but the replay shows that the shooting was legal: what's the register of this play ? We penalize the player with a missed field goal ?
How the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register this play ? ..."

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Basketball Steals Statistical Tracking

Kendall Ponder wrote in the Basketball Coaching Forum: "I decided years ago to give the steal to whoever came up with the ball.....
Both the player who tips the ball and the player who was in correct defensive position to come up with the ball made positive plays to get the ball.
I don't split steals but I do give half a steal if a player ties up the ball. It doesn't happen enough to make a difference is a players avg steals per game but it makes sense to me to do it that way....."
Rick Allison answers: "I'm sorry if this may seem offensive, but...the last post (and some other previous) is what I find intriguing and, unfortunately, widely prevalent in the world of Basketball coaching/training (actually, the world in general).
That is, people expressing less than informed opinions in a manner that suggests that they are somehow valid, without providing adequate evidence of what authority or proof supports their assertion. It is closely akin (I believe) to the coaching style of "just do it that way because I said so".

So what are you basing your assertion on? You said, "I really don't like personal interpretation for stats", yet it seems that is what you are doing unless you have access to a different (than NCAA) official statistician' s manual that supports your assertion.
The rationale that we don't give a player a steal if he/she strips a ball and the opponent retains possession is not valid reasoning, because a steal implies a change of possession which did not occur in your rationale example.
I respect your opinion (well-intentioned) , but this is a good example of the kind of influence that fosters the spread of misinformation. We must all strive to be more informed when we make assertions in this way. Re-check your sources and rationale, if possible.
Now, sometimes we base our opinions on what we think is valid information, but later turns out to be otherwise. I've also been a victim of this... we all make mistakes... nothing wrong with that (I believe)...but how you present your assertions is important.
I know this comes off as a "holier than thou" post and some might find it offensive, but I think it is important and needs to be said in this forum. Too often, coaches think that because they have been coaching for many, many years, that assertions they make should not be questioned or that they don't ever have to check the rule book or other sources.
It never hurts to check your assumptions and assertions." Rick Allison from LoneStar Basketball Academy.
