eBA Stats Group wants to wish Merry Christmas & Happy New Year !
HAPPY DAYS !
Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year !

Twelve years ago this evening, on 24 December 1998, 20:00 GMT, a really scary big button in an old 386 Computer was pressed and the eBA-Stats.com Website went online for the first time.

This Website was the first component of the actual Basketball Statistical Creative Analysis eBA Stats Group and from a start of hits numbered in the thousands, the site now gets almost 20 million hits a year.

As always, an anniversary of our Basketball Statistical Creative Analysis eBA Stats Group, today we blow the 12th. candle..., is a good time to look back on the evolution of the Web and how our sites advanced...

But it’s a different website’s anniversary: we open today the eBA PERMANENT ( 24x7x365 ) Basketball Statistics Clinic and we invite our authors, reviewers, visitors and readers to join the eBA Team to celebrate with us our 12th anniversary.
eBA Stats Group turns 12 today.

Which, in human terms, means we are almost teenager !

In many respects, eBA Stats Group is a different website today from the "10-page volume 1 issue 1" that appeared in December of 1998.

However, when one reads the first (December 1998) and last (December 2010) editorial-articles of Founding Editor Prof. Roberto Azar, there is any doubt about why there should be an evidence of the right road we have well-traveled and what a ride it’s been.

The past 3 years have seen remarkable changes in the eBA Stats Group, both English and Spanish sections, and we now have 24 eBA Team Members in 11 different countries; together with 1264 Editors and 699 Publishers all over the world.

The new RFM (Registered Full Members) Editors being admitted
each week bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the eBA Group of Basketball Statistics Websites !.

We can bet the first founders and authors of eBA-Stats.com didn’t know how huge and important their creation would have become in just 12 years...

As we blow out 12 candles on the eBA-Stats cake, we go on counting new pages (29.731 today, 29.732...), articles, documents and sites:

the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis PERMANENT Clinic since today,

eBA Stats on Twitter since September 2009,

eBA Stats on Facebook since December 2008,

the eBA Basketball 'everything-here' Store since October 2007,

the eBA-Wiki Global Basketball Encyclopedia since January 2006.

the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis Blogs since August 2005,

the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis Clinics since December 2003,

the eBA Basketball Statistics Forum since December 2000...

All this work centralized by the eBA Basketball Statistics Portal
since December 24, 1998 ~ 20:00 GMT.

And this is reality THANKS TO YOU !

eBA Stats Group wants to wish Merry Christmas & Happy New Year !
Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year !

eBA Stats Group  wishes to everybody,

Friday Press Clippings:
Lakers Jump on Pacers Early, Cruise to 109-94 Win

Basketball Statistician's Friday Press Clippings
From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Lakers Jump on Pacers Early, Cruise to 109-94 Win ' by David Friedman

"... However, even though the game's story is not particularly interesting I do have an interesting story from the game, namely my conversation with a veteran NBA scout who offered some very candid and insightful comments on a wide variety of subjects. He stated without equivocation that Bryant is the best player in the NBA ..."

"... When I told the scout the way that Coach Jackson answered my question about what it means to be an MVP level player he agreed completely, noting that there is a big difference between being a team's main option and being a team's second option: an MVP level player "performs under duress" (Jackson's phrase) in terms of overcoming nagging injuries, fighting through fatigue, dealing with physical play/double teaming defenses and still finding a way to lead his team to victories; a second option player is able to perform at a high level at times--particularly when the defense is tilted toward the first option--but he cannot sustain quite the same level as the first option can nor can the second option overcome quite as much "duress." ..."

"... Gasol's performance this season is an excellent illustration of the limitations of "advanced basketball statistics" and validates what I have been saying about Gasol for the past several seasons: Gasol is an excellent player but he is hardly an MVP level player. ... "

"... The scout agreed with my analysis and told me his own story of "stat guru" follies: a "stat guru" had said to him that the scout's NBA team should start the players with the five highest field goal percentages because field goal percentage is such an important statistic.

The scout chuckled and shook his head, incredulous that the "stat guru" did not understand/would not accept that high field goal percentages can be an artifact of a player's role on the team and that a well balanced starting five must include ballhandlers, shooters and big men: "What are we supposed to do, start five centers if those guys have the five highest shooting percentages?" ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
November 2010 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Basketball Statistics eBA Case Study
Different Situations
in a Basketball Blocked Shot... Case Study

"... A1 shoots and is fouled by B5....

• case a) The foul occurs before the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is made; or
• case b) the foul occurs before the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is missed; or
• case c) the foul occurs before the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is blocked by B3; or
• case d) the foul occurs after the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is made; or
• case e) the foul occurs after the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is missed; or
• case f) the foul occurs after the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is blocked by B3.

What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound, etc. ) ... ?"

Conclusion:

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

A blocked shot is credited to a player any time the player appreciably alters the flight of a FGA and the shot is not made and goaltending is not called, or while in the obvious act of shooting the ball is stuffed or knocked loose before it is in flight and no foul is called.

In addition to being in the obvious act of shooting, the shooting hand must be moving toward the basket in the shooting position or the shooter must be airborne and moving toward the basket with the intention of a dunk or lay-up and the ball must be in position for the shot.

If there is doubt about whether the player was in the act of shooting, the interpretation shall be that that player WAS NOT.

Philosophy: A blocked shot should be credited only when the shot clearly is in flight or the player is in the obvious act of shooting.

In cases where the ball is knocked loose before the player is in the act of shooting, the statistic in question should be a FORCED STEAL.

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:

• In (a) and (d) charge A1 with a FGA and credit with a FGM and charge B5 with a    BAD PERSONAL FOUL (allows a bonus throw );

• in (b) and (c) do not charge A1 with a FGA. Without a FGA, there can be no    blocked shot credited in (c); only charge B5 with a PF;

• in (e) and (f) charge A1 with a FGA, B5 with a PF and credit Team A with a    dead-ball rebound;

• in (f) also credit B3 with a blocked shot WITHOUT POSSESSION (since after the    foul, the possession is on Team A side, for FT or an outbound throw in).

This Case Study was presented as every 15th. day of each month, on November 15th, 2010 in our eBA Portal : were sent 324 answers, 201 partial answers and 98 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.

A Six Month Free eBA Full Member Registration
was awarded to those who submitted the correct answers !
