Which team controls the game's pace ?

Which team controls the pace of the game ?
For instance, if Team A (90.6 poss/g) and Team B (96.7 poss/g) played, which team would control the pace ? As might be expected it would be somewhere in the middle (93.7 poss/g) or could one team give direction to the pace involving only main features ? By the way, which team has had the advantage of controlling the pace... the drudgery team or the up-tempo team?
Can a team to use pace as a strategic advantage ?

About the "Game Pace" factor:
The "Game Pace" is a factor which takes into account the fact that some teams play at a faster pace than others, and therefore individual statistics may be padded for players on those teams that do play at a faster pace.
Pace factor is an estimate of the number of possessions per 48 or 40 minutes by a team and its opponents.
It is calculated as follows:
Finally, writing 'pace factor' in the 'Search' option you can reach to all my previous posts about this thematic.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Fouled in the Act of Shooting & Missed Layup
"... A player was fouled in the act of shooting and missed the layup...
Does it count against that player´s FG% ?
And if so shouldn't you add his FT% to his FG% ? ..."
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
In terms of statistics keeping, according with the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System:

- if a player is fouled in the act of shooting, it DOES NOT count as a shot attempt and DOES NOT factor into their field goal %;
- FG and FT are independent stats as different categories: so, you can not count FTs as FG;
- a foul on a jump shot also not count against the shooter: if the shooter makes the attempt, then we register a make and an attempt, but if the shooter misses when fouled, we only note the "received foul" by the shooter (but NOT a missed attempt !), the foul made and the FT attempts with it´s result.
Why would you want to punish a player's stats for drawing contact and getting to the line ?

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Giving Explanations about Sort of Sample Gathered

"... When we discuss in the eBA Clinics Course about statistician's role, what the meaning of "giving explanations about what sort of sample was gathered, and how might that sample affect the result" ?
This topic is broadly discussed at these eBA Group of Sites: there is a general interpreted sensation that statistical knowledge is many times incorrectly used with intention, by finding ways to translate information from the observation that are favorably disposed to the presenter.

A famous quote, included in our front page, from former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli is "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
In truth , the well-known book "How to Lie With Statistics" by Darrell Huff identify many cases of deceptive uses of statistics, concentrating on graphs designed to deceive either deliberately .
By choosing ( or rejecting, or modifying ) a certain sample, results can be manipulated; throwing out bad data values or local anomalies is one means of doing so ( eliminating one or more low performance games of a certain player from his season balance, is a known example ).
This may be the result of without restrictions fraud or of complex, balanced and unintentional bias on the part of the statistician. Do you know the case of that point guard that at home plays, with the locals guys at the computers, had 11.1 assists per game... meanwhile on the road he served only 3.2 ? ..."

HAPPY DAYS !
Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year !
Twelve years ago this evening, on 24 December 1998, 20:00 GMT, a really scary big button in an old 386 Computer was pressed and the eBA-Stats.com Website went online for the first time.
This Website was the first component of the actual Basketball Statistical Creative Analysis eBA Stats Group and from a start of hits numbered in the thousands, the site now gets almost 20 million hits a year.
As always, an anniversary of our Basketball Statistical Creative Analysis eBA Stats Group, today we blow the 12th. candle..., is a good time to look back on the evolution of the Web and how our sites advanced...
But it’s a different website’s anniversary: we open today the eBA PERMANENT ( 24x7x365 ) Basketball Statistics Clinic and we invite our authors, reviewers, visitors and readers to join the eBA Team to celebrate with us our 12th anniversary.
eBA Stats Group turns 12 today.
Which, in human terms, means we are almost teenager !
In many respects, eBA Stats Group is a different website today from the "10-page volume 1 issue 1" that appeared in December of 1998.
However, when one reads the first (December 1998) and last (December 2010) editorial-articles of Founding Editor Prof. Roberto Azar, there is any doubt about why there should be an evidence of the right road we have well-traveled and what a ride it’s been.
The past 3 years have seen remarkable changes in the eBA Stats Group, both English and Spanish sections, and we now have 24 eBA Team Members in 11 different countries; together with 1264 Editors and 699 Publishers all over the world.
The new RFM (Registered Full Members) Editors being admitted
each week bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the eBA Group of Basketball Statistics Websites !.
We can bet the first founders and authors of eBA-Stats.com didn’t know how huge and important their creation would have become in just 12 years...
As we blow out 12 candles on the eBA-Stats cake, we go on counting new pages (29.731 today, 29.732...), articles, documents and sites:
the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis PERMANENT Clinic since today,
eBA Stats on Twitter since September 2009,
eBA Stats on Facebook since December 2008,
the eBA Basketball 'everything-here' Store since October 2007,
the eBA-Wiki Global Basketball Encyclopedia since January 2006.
the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis Blogs since August 2005,
the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis Clinics since December 2003,
the eBA Basketball Statistics Forum since December 2000...
All this work centralized by the eBA Basketball Statistics Portal
since December 24, 1998 ~ 20:00 GMT.
And this is reality THANKS TO YOU !

Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year !
eBA Stats Group wishes to everybody,
our publishers, editors and registered members,
our friends coaches participants in the courses and clinics,
our advertisers and sponsors,
our readers and thousands of daily guests,
our families, colleagues and personal friends...
A Happy Birthday, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
May the season bring you joy and good cheer!

"... However, even though the game's story is not particularly interesting I do have an interesting story from the game, namely my conversation with a veteran NBA scout who offered some very candid and insightful comments on a wide variety of subjects. He stated without equivocation that Bryant is the best player in the NBA ..."
"... When I told the scout the way that Coach Jackson answered my question about what it means to be an MVP level player he agreed completely, noting that there is a big difference between being a team's main option and being a team's second option: an MVP level player "performs under duress" (Jackson's phrase) in terms of overcoming nagging injuries, fighting through fatigue, dealing with physical play/double teaming defenses and still finding a way to lead his team to victories; a second option player is able to perform at a high level at times--particularly when the defense is tilted toward the first option--but he cannot sustain quite the same level as the first option can nor can the second option overcome quite as much "duress." ..."
"... Gasol's performance this season is an excellent illustration of the limitations of "advanced basketball statistics" and validates what I have been saying about Gasol for the past several seasons: Gasol is an excellent player but he is hardly an MVP level player. ... "
"... The scout agreed with my analysis and told me his own story of "stat guru" follies: a "stat guru" had said to him that the scout's NBA team should start the players with the five highest field goal percentages because field goal percentage is such an important statistic.
The scout chuckled and shook his head, incredulous that the "stat guru" did not understand/would not accept that high field goal percentages can be an artifact of a player's role on the team and that a well balanced starting five must include ballhandlers, shooters and big men: "What are we supposed to do, start five centers if those guys have the five highest shooting percentages?" ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
November 2010 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Different Situations
in a Basketball Blocked Shot... Case Study
"... A1 shoots and is fouled by B5....
• case a) The foul occurs before the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is made; or
• case b) the foul occurs before the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is missed; or
• case c) the foul occurs before the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is blocked by B3; or
• case d) the foul occurs after the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is made; or
• case e) the foul occurs after the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is missed; or
• case f) the foul occurs after the ball clearly is in flight and the shot is blocked by B3.
What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound, etc. ) ... ?"
Conclusion:
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
A blocked shot is credited to a player any time the player appreciably alters the flight of a FGA and the shot is not made and goaltending is not called, or while in the obvious act of shooting the ball is stuffed or knocked loose before it is in flight and no foul is called.
In addition to being in the obvious act of shooting, the shooting hand must be moving toward the basket in the shooting position or the shooter must be airborne and moving toward the basket with the intention of a dunk or lay-up and the ball must be in position for the shot.
If there is doubt about whether the player was in the act of shooting, the interpretation shall be that that player WAS NOT.
Philosophy: A blocked shot should be credited only when the shot clearly is in flight or the player is in the obvious act of shooting.
In cases where the ball is knocked loose before the player is in the act of shooting, the statistic in question should be a FORCED STEAL.

Photograph by Chris Graythen from Zimbio.com/
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
• In (a) and (d) charge A1 with a FGA and credit with a FGM and charge B5 with a BAD PERSONAL FOUL (allows a bonus throw );
• in (b) and (c) do not charge A1 with a FGA. Without a FGA, there can be no blocked shot credited in (c); only charge B5 with a PF;
• in (e) and (f) charge A1 with a FGA, B5 with a PF and credit Team A with a dead-ball rebound;
• in (f) also credit B3 with a blocked shot WITHOUT POSSESSION (since after the foul, the possession is on Team A side, for FT or an outbound throw in).
This Case Study was presented as every 15th. day of each month, on November 15th, 2010 in our eBA Portal : were sent 324 answers, 201 partial answers and 98 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Calculating the 'Rebound Rate' from the boxscore

How to calculate 'Rebound Rate' in basketball from the player's statistics boxscore according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ?
Rebound rate is a very useful statistic to make a division between good rebounders and poor rebounders.
This method give us the percentage of missed shots a player rebounds while on the court, but take into account that it doesn't function for entire teams: it only functions for individuals players.
Obtain the player's statistics whom you are going to analyze from the boxscore. To calculate with few mistakes the rebound rate, we need to know the total number of rebounds grabbed by that player along with the number of minutes the player played.

Come upon team stats for both the team the player you are analyzing and the teams your player went against: total number of rebounds for the team and the total number of rebounds for the opponent and total number of minutes the two teams played.
Add together the number of team rebounds for both teams. Multiply the result by the number of minutes the player played.
Multiply the number of rebounds the individual grabbed by the number of total team minutes played. Take this number, and divide it by the resulting number from the previous calculation. After dividing the two numbers, the result is the rebound rate for the player: that means the percentage of missed shots a player rebounds while on the court.
If you wish to examine and note the similarities or differences of multiple individuals, you need to complete these calculations each time to get the rebound rate for each individual player.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About an Inadvertent Whistle Statistical Registration Case
"... With 14 seconds left on the shot clock, defender B2 deflects the ball out of bounds.
A2 makes the throw-in and the ball is deflected by B1. With the ball bouncing freely on the floor, an official inadvertently blows his whistle.
1) to whom the ball is awarded;
2) shall the shot clock reset ?
3) how the statistician register this possession ? ..."
Basketball Rule Fundamental:
This case is a assemblage of a rule ( team control ) with a definition ( inadvertent whistle ): when an inadvertent whistle occurs and there was no player or team control at the time of the whistle the shot clock operator shall stop the timing device and reset the shot clock.

BasketbAll Rule Interpretation:
The ball is awarded to Team A according to the alternating procedure.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
The statistician work is only to register the two deflections, because the same original possession is being yet played.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Parameter

In mathematics, statistics, and the mathematical sciences, parameters are quantities that define certain characteristics of systems or functions.
When evaluating the function over a domain or determining the response of the system over a period of time, the independent variables are modulated, while the parameters are held constant.

The function or system may then be reevaluated or reprocessed with different parameters, to give a function or system with different behavior. Loosely speaking, then, parameters are constants in a narrow context but are variables in a larger context.
Moreover, whether a quantity is a parameter or a variable is generally determined by its role in a particular system or function, rather than by anything intrinsic to the quantity.
In non-technical contexts or in jargon, parameter may also simply be a synonym for criterion.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Calculating Standard Deviation in Basketball

"... The standard deviation is one of several indices of variability that statisticians use to measure of the spread or dispersion (the data values in a sample are not all the same.
This variation between values is called dispersion) among the measures in a given population.
To calculate the standard deviation of a population it is first necessary to calculate that population's variance. Numerically, the standard deviation is the square root of the variance.

Unlike the variance, which is a somewhat abstract measure of variability, the standard deviation can be readily conceptualized as a distance along the scale of measurement.
The more widely the values are spread out, the larger the standard deviation.
For example, say we have two separate lists of exam results from a team of 15 players; one ranges from 31% to 98%, the other from 82% to 93%, then the standard deviation would be larger for the results of the first exam. ..."

"... This probably makes good sense for a sport like baseball, which is full of discrete events that are easily measured. It is also understandable, however, that there is less of an edge to be gained from statistical analysis now that everyone is doing it.
Basketball, meanwhile, might seem too hectic and woolly for such rigorous dissection. It is far more collaborative than baseball and happens much faster, with players shifting from offense one moment to defense the next ..."
"... What’s the most efficient shot to take besides a layup? Easy, says Zarren: a three-pointer from the corner. What’s one of the most misused, misinterpreted statistics? “Turnovers are way more expensive than people think,” Zarren says.
That’s because most teams focus on the points a defense scores from the turnover but don’t correctly value the offense’s opportunity cost — that is, the points it might have scored had the turnover not occurred. ..."
"... Still, there remains a significant universe of basketball statistics that are simply not captured: each pass thrown and caught, each player’s position on the floor at a given time, any number of angles and proximities and nuances.
Zarren lusts after such data and is quietly pushing for a technological solution that would produce it. One possibility: embed the floor of each N.B.A. arena with electronic sensors and have the players wear microchips in their sneakers. ... "
"... A lot of things happen on a basketball court — picks, passes, defensive shifts — that aren’t routinely quantified. This is not to suggest that basketball teams don’t think statistically.
But only recently have a few teams begun to hire a new breed of stathead to scrutinize every conceivable variable. ..."

Recommended HS-level players Statistics

"...What category of our eBA basketball statistics would the coach provide reasons in favour for HS-level players ?
What performs as expected when applied and what doesn't ? ...
The components I recommend in the basketball statistics analysis at HS-level are the following:
At the team level: shooting ( as the most valuable factor to look at related to change for the better in shooting precision ), turnovers, rebounds and FT percentage.

At the player level: shooting ( as the most important individual statistic at the pro
level ), turnovers, rebounding, FT shooting on offense; fouls, forcing turnovers; rebounding and opponent shooting on the defensive end.
At the player level, it will be important to analyze which are the most valuable offensive players: that's means the players that can produce in an efficient manner with higher usage rates and which players need to be more characterized by careful choice with their shot in order to be effective.
At the High School level, the effective or Adj FG% = ( Total FG + 0.5 * 3ptFG ) / Total FGA is currently applied.

Free Throws ~ Shouting to the Shooter Cases
"... A1 is in act of a free throw shooting when an opponent attempts to distract him by shouting loudly or stamping feet heavily of the floor.
Which is the statistical rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System if the shot is successful and / or unsuccessful ? ..."
Basketball Rule Fundamental:
While the player is in the act of shooting for free-throws, opponents shall not be permitted to disconcert that player by actions such as waving a hand(s), shouting loudly, stamping feet heavily or clapping hands near the shooter.

BasketbAll Rule Interpretation:
To do so may result in a technical foul if the shooter is disadvantaged by the action, or a warning if the shooter is not disadvantaged.
In this scenery if the shot is successful a warning shall be given to the opponent and shall be communicated to coach B.
This warning shall apply to all players of team B for the remainder of the game for the similar behaviour.
But if the try is unsuccessful a technical foul may be charged to shouter.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:

Dr. Jack’s Leadership Lessons Dr. Jack Ramsay is one of the most respected basketball minds of his generation, and one of the most successful coaches He currently works as a pro basketball analyst for ESPN. This manual is more a recollection of the sport Ramsay knows and loves. |
Many of the author’s tips, directed to those who want to lead both on and off the court, include the need to set clear goals, develop self-confidence, make firm decisions and accept responsibility—certainly not original and often hackneyed.
The text becomes more interesting when Ramsay backs up his advice with anecdotes about such basketball greats as Pat Riley, Michael Jordan and 'Magic' Johnson.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Basketball Power Percentage: for individuals ?

"... Some additional comments referred to the Floor Percentage (use the Search option to read the previous posts) which is "scoring possessions divided by possessions".
For example, a player that scores on 6 of 9 possessions has a floor percentage of 0.555 = 6/9.
This method is used by the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System and applies to teams, meanwhile to individuals is more complicated because scoring possessions and possessions are more complicated to define for individuals.

Three ways about how to calculate Team Floor Percentage:
1. Sum the individual scoring possessions and total possessions and divide.
2. Apply the methods explained in this site at the "eBA Basketball Encyclopedia" in order to calculate the team scoring possessions and total possessions, then divide.
3. Use the Power Percentage. ..."

Flawed Box Score Numbers Can Lead to Faulty Conclusions

From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Flawed Box Score Numbers Can Lead to Faulty Conclusions " ' by David Friedman
"... but a play from Boston's 105-89 victory over Denver on Wednesday night caught my eye: Rajon Rondo passed the ball to Ray Allen in the right corner, Allen took two dribbles, drove from behind the three point line to the hoop, made a contested left handed layup--and Rondo received an assist ! ..."
"... An assist is supposed to reward the passer for helping to create a shot, not for simply being the last player to handle the ball before someone else shoots. ..."
"... I have never suggested--and do not believe--that the primary problem is "home cooking"; I think that the assist standards have been lowered across the board ..."
"... If, as I suspect, elite playmakers receive a certain benefit of the doubt across the board then things do not really even out over the course of the season--and this should be a great concern to both "old school" journalists/historians as well as to the "stat gurus." ... "
"... now even though I don't believe that he is legitimately averaging over 14 apg--but until the NBA vastly improves its scorekeeping standards I will look with a jaundiced eye at the most subjective box score numbers (assists, steals, blocked shots, turnovers) and I will also be most suspicious of "advanced basketball statistics" that are based on those faulty numbers. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Offensive Efficiency Statistics Elements

"...Once you have kept an account of a team's offensive efficiency: ...
... if I get rid of all the statistics from one player and then calculate anew the team efficiency, ...
... would I obtain something that serves to indicate the player's influence on the team as a single and complete entity ? ...
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System doesn't works in this way because the offensive efficiency is contingent upon a number of elements:

1.- Scoring Option / Replacement
2.- Assists / FG ( including passing and ability to get free )
3.- Assists / TO
4.- %FGA / Distance to the Basket ( which includes acuteness, the condition of being high, penetration and posted scoring abilities )
It's hard to make sense of your method because no player plays as a team on his own and by chance if that player is a top PG or a top F or C scorer from a poor team.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
1 versus 1 & no substitutes available
"... Game ( perhaps from an amateur or non professional
league ) in third extra period. Each team with only two players on court.
One player of each team jumps for the ball and both fall down, being both wounded and cannot continue the game.
So each team left with only one player. Which should be the referees decision and which the statistical register ? ..."
Basketball Rule's Fundamental=
A player may stay in the game even if he receive treatment in the case when there are no substitutes available.

In the case of a minor injury and can be treated on the court, the player should be allowed to continue without penalty.
If the player cannot truly continue because the injury is more serious, their team would lose the game.
In the described scenario, a situation which is very unlikely to occur, if each team was reduced to one player on the same play, it would be a double forfeit, with a final score of 0 - 0.
The eBA Statistical Registration is included in the Encyclopedia eBA - Case Studies.

Big Game, Small World: A Basketball Adventure In Bhutan the king has his own hoops tutor -- and basketball helped ward off a war. From China to the American Midwest, from the playgrounds of New York to the gyms of Europe, the quaint little sport that James Naismith invented in 1891 has leapt over boundaries and swept across language barriers around the globe. |
To capture this amazing phenomenon, Sports Illustrated senior writer and New York Times bestselling author Alexander Wolff traveled the world and chronicled the personalities, histories, tragedies, and comedies spinning around the sport of basketball -- and shows how its ferocity, power, and grace appeal to the human passions in us all.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Player Per Minute Efficiency Rate Statistics

"... Finding that statistics accounted on a per-minute basis tend to be fairly consistent even when a player changes her role and begins to play more minutes.
This allows for a level playing field in analogy of low-minute reserves (as long as they've played a fair number of minutes; most cut-offs are 250 or 500 minutes for the season) and starters.
Sometimes, you'll hear this referred to as a player's rate; his "scoring rate", for example, would be points per minute. Traditionally, this rate is multiplied by the 40 or 48 minutes in a game so the numbers make more sense.

Player per minute efficiency rate= Stat ( f.ex. Assists ) / Min * 40 or 48
The rating for each player is then adjusted to a per-minute basis, so that, for example, you can compare subs with starters , and also normalized for the team's pace. ..."

Statistics, probability and NCAA's "March Madness"

From Scientific American
By Larry Greenemeier
Download source here: ' Statistics, probability and NCAA's "March Madness" ' by Larry Greenemeier
"... For a study in the Journal of Gambling Business and Economics, Jacobson was trying to figure out whether the top three teams' seeding in each bracket at the beginning of the tournament is a good predictor of how far they will go in the tournament.
Jacobson analyzed data from NCAA tournaments dating back to 1985, which ended with a classic game that saw Ed Pickney's Villanova Wildcats beat the heavily favored, Patrick Ewing-led Georgetown Hoyas. ..."
"... The tournament's notorious unpredictability didn't stop Joel Sokol, a Georgia Tech operations research professor whose statistical model correctly selected last year's Final Four, championship game and overall tournament winner (the University of Kansas Jayhawks), from developing his own computer program. His picks? ..."
"... Beyond the college tournament, the game of basketball itself relies heavily on probability, particularly when rebounding.
In a study published a year ago in Nature Neuroscience, researchers at Rome's Sapienza University found that basketball players are nearly twice as good as sportswriters at predicting whether a shot will go in the basket, a predictive capability that helps the players put themselves in the proper position to grab a ball that clangs off the rim and start a fast break going the other way. ..."
"... When the researchers showed a group of players from Italy's professional basketball league, coaches, journalists and college students video of a player shooting free throws, 70 percent of the time the players made the correct call, compared to 40 percent for the writers. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Possessions Numbers Very High and Different Statistics

"... Looking at the boxscore of yesterday's games and applying this possession´s formulas:
Poss = (0.96*(FGA + TO - OREB +(0.44*FTA))
we reached to the following numbers
Team A: 105.4
Team B: 114.6
Is this correct ? How can be so different ? Should the "team rebounds" be added to the team total rebounds? Are they all defensive?
It seems like those numbers are too high, and can not be so different:
1 - The eBA Basketball Analysis System register the "team rebounds" and apply them to the team total in equal proportions to the offensive and defensive rebounds that are given in the team total.

In our reports, where we make a distinction between offensive and defensive team rebounds, team rebounds are included in the team total, but referred separately in a special column.
2 - As I said in the eBA Statistics Clinics, the free throw coefficient is only an estimate.
As we stated in this thread, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System looking for exactness, register the real number of times the team reached the line for 2 or 3 free throws with the concept UP TO THE LINE, remarking between parenthesis the number of times the last throw was MADE.
3 - Shots at the end of the period include - in box scores as your´s - "team rebound" that may add possessions that don't really exists - see for reference this thread.
Technical FTA are subtracted from the regular FTA, since they aren't really part of any possession. ..."
