Basketball Statistician's Digest:
September 2010 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Different Situations in a Basketball Turnover... Case Study
"... Team A is with possession of the ball and...
• case a) fails to get the ball into front court in the allotted 8 sec, or
• case b) fails to get off a shot in the allotted 24 seconds on the shot clock, or
• case c) fails to release in the allotted 5 seconds during a throw-in.
What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( forced or unforced TO; good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound, etc.) ... ?"
Conclusion:
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
The purpose of a turnover is to reflect statistically the times in which a team was given the ball and should have gotten some kind of shot but, before it could get any kind of shot, made some type of mistake that turned the ball over to the opponent.
A turnover can only be charged against the offense; that is, the team with the ball. A team becomes the team with the ball when it has control (including during free throws) or is entitled to the ball for either a throw-in or a free throw.
There will be some errors that will not result in the charging of a turnover because they did not involve the turning of the ball over to the opponent. Errors that occur at approximately the same time a team becomes entitled to the ball should not be considered turnovers. The team should have time to realize it has the ball before being charged with turnovers.

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
• In (a) if the TO is caused by the opponent full-court-team pressure, charge Team A with a Team FORCED TO and credit Team B with a FORCED ST.
In all the other situations, charge the player with an individual TECHNICAL TO and credit Team B with an UNFORCED Team ST.
All those registrations in the category '8 Sec Violation'.
• in (b) if the the shooter was responsible for not seeing the clock running out, charge THAT player with an individual UNFORCED TO and credit Team B with a UNFORCED ST.
In all the other situations, generally caused by the defense pressure charge Team A with a Team FORCED TO and credit Team B with a FORCED Team ST.
All those registrations in the category '24 Sec Violation';
• in (c) if the TO is caused by the opponent team pressure, charge Team A with a Team FORCED TO and credit Team B with a FORCED ST.
In all the other situations charge the player with an individual TECHNICAL TO and credit Team B with an UNFORCED Team ST.
All those registrations in the category '5 Sec Violation'.
Commentary:
In all three cases, there is a turnover. If the statistician thinks there is one player who is primarily responsible, charge that player with an Individual Turnover. If the statistician thinks that more than one player was responsible, charge Team A with a Team Turnover.
