Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Bad Dribble - It's Turnover but Steal ?
"... A1 is dribbling when he deal with the ball inefficiently and
it bounces toward B2, how we register this play ?
Steal from B2 ....? but he was not the " the initiator of the action causing the turnover"
What about the proper ruling and the statistical registration in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ? ..."
Basketball Statistics Registration Fundamentals=
To earn a steal, the defensive player should be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. For NCCA and FIBA the steal should be a take-away, not just a recovery and not just a forced error. For us, according to our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, the "forced error" concept is different at all. See: eBA ONLINE.

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
A1 is charged with a turnover, and meanwhile NCAA & FIBA do not credit B2 with a steal as he did not initiate the action, I suggest the following:
analyze the action by means the game video-tape and credit B2 with a steal if there was although a minimal action of the player as the cause of the turnover, on the contrary a "team steal" will be registered.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
NBA teams follow lead of baseball

"... The basic principle in many of the basketball stat formulas is how efficiently players use possessions.
The object is to get players who take better shots, commit few turnovers and grab the highest possible percentage of rebounds. It's not just looking at players who score and rebound the most, but who do so with the fewest chances.
The more efficient offensive and defensive possessions a team has, the more points it will score and the fewer it will give up.
So all is explained? Not exactly...

Friday Press Clippings:
Team USA Faces Major Challenge in FIBA World Championship

From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Team USA Faces Major Challenge in FIBA World Championship ' by David Friedman
"... The FIBA World Championship begins on August 28. This competition rarely receives much publicity in the United States but for many basketball-minded nations it is very important, equal to--if not even greater than--the Olympics in terms of prestige; American kids who play basketball dream of winning an NBA championship but kids in other countries dream of leading their homeland to the FIBA World Championship title. ..."
"... Team USA has historically not fared well in this event, finishing first just three times in 15 FIBA World Championship appearances (in contrast, the U.S. men's national basketball team has captured 13 of a possible 17 Olympic gold medals); the last U.S. team to earn a FIBA World Championship gold medal was the 1994 squad (the so-called "Dream Team II") led by a star-studded cast including Shaquille O'Neal (18.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg), Reggie Miller (17.1 ppg, .526 3FG%), Dominique Wilkins (12.6 ppg) and Joe Dumars (12.6 ppg). ..."
"... Most FIBA teams rely on the ability to drive to the hoop, draw in the defense and then kick the ball out to open three point shooters. In order to be successful, Team USA's guards must control dribble penetration.
Also, Team USA's defense must be "on a string" when opposing teams run screen/roll actions, because otherwise their opponents will either shred Team USA with wide open layups or bombard them from three point range. ... "
"... FIBA play is more physical than NBA play, particularly on the perimeter; expect to see opposing teams be very physical with Durant, who did not fare well in the first round of the 2010 NBA playoffs versus Ron Artest's bump and run defense.
No FIBA team has an individual defender who is as skilled and as strong as Artest but the FIBA rules allow for a lot more contact than NBA rules do so it will not be easy for Durant to rack up 25-30 ppg while shooting a good percentage from the field and he likely will not be granted as many free throw attempts per game as he receives in the NBA. ..."
"... The nightmare scenario for Team USA (other than an injury or foul trouble sidelining Durant) is for an opponent to carve them up with screen/roll plays, hit a high percentage of three point shots and use physical defense to frustrate finesse wing players such as Durant and Gay.
Team USA's players are mostly young and inexperienced and could get that "deer in the headlights" look if an opposing team hits them with a 10-0 run. Team USA lacks a lock down perimeter defender--a role that Bryant filled brilliantly in the 2008 Olympics--and does not have a defined go-to scorer other than Durant. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
A Basketball Blocked Shot - Attempt or No Attempt ?

In basketball, a block (short for blocked shot) occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a shot from an offensive player.
The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.
In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward. If it is heading downward when the defender hits it, it is ruled a goaltending and counts as a made basket.
A goaltending is also called if the block is made after the ball bounces on the backboard.

At the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System: in the case of altered shot, when the ball leaves the player's hand we register an attempted shot for the shooter and a steal at the category 'Altered Shot" for the defender.
In the case the ball doesn't leaves the player's hand we have a turnover ("blocked shot") and a steal ("Block") respectively.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Player Regularity in Certain Category

A basketball coach is interested not only in the player's average performance in certain game's category (points made or rebounds grabbed), but in his regularity in that category.
Certainly, an irregular player may be scoring his maximum points in an important game, but it's possible the contrary too.
In spite of the importance of the regularity, the official basketball statistics doesn't reflect this characteristic.
How the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System register the player's regularity ?

The player performance throughout a whole season will be evaluated by means of iso-elastic function which is greatly explained in a work of Alejandro Esteller-Moré: "A note about the statistics sports about the regular players" in a PDF document ( in spanish ) which may be reached clicking on the title and where he propose to use the well-known social welfare function of Atkinson (1970) to evaluate the performance of a player in any category.
"... Probably, many basketball coaches (and supporters) prefer those players that score a regular amount of points in each game to those other players that, though on average do equally well or even better, are more irregular. However, sports statistics do not reflect regularity.
In order to take into account this characteristic seriously, we propose to use the well-known social welfare function of Atkinson (1970) to evaluate the performance of a player in any category. Alejandro Esteller-Moré ..."

How is it that with hundreds of college scholarships available to women who play basketball, and national and regional television exposure as never before, and some serious money being thrown at college women's coaches, that there's not enough depth in the women's game for anyone to challenge the Connecticut Huskies? ..."
"... One look at that collection of universities, not a one of them named Louisiana Tech or Old Dominion, and you thought you could safely proclaim that big-time college athletic departments finally cared about women's hoops, and depth and balance would soon follow. ... "
"... But UConn's dominance at what should be the most competitive time in the history of women's sports raises a question: Just what, exactly, is going on at the 331 other NCAA Division I schools that field women's basketball teams? As we know, no one has come within less than 10 points of UConn since it last lost in the 2008 Final Four.
For comparative purposes, when the UCLA men's team won 88 in a row in the early 1970s, 16 of those victories were by single digits, including two one-point wins. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Basketball Second Chance Points Statistics

Second Chance points doesn't appear at the regular stats score-sheets.
Out of USA statistics, second chance points doesn't appears in the classical stats sheet that you know and are used to, still today.
But they appears in a central manner at the Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis eBA System, and are analyzed by original play, seconds to go and players involved in the play.

Another important contribution of the Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis eBA System is to take the second chance points not only as a stats quantity, but as a percentage of the total of rebounds taken, offensive and defensive, own and opponents.
You can see it by yourself this analysis in the above mentioned area, as in Game Highlights" (PDF Document).

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About Field Goals Made and Equivalent Basketball Game Situations

"... Does made field goals always represent a change of possession according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ?
Made FG about at all times conduct to a change of possession, whilst on the contrary missed FG may precede to offensive rebounds, which extends the possession. That's the reason why the missed FG have a minor possession value than made FG.
This statement includes rare instances that does not conform to a generalizations as flagrant fouls, shots made at the buzzer, or shot made with a following foul shot missed and rebounded by the offense.
The complete analysis of this topic and all these situations are developed in my exposition about "Basketball Possession Analysis" in the Basketball Statistics Registration eBA Clinics ONLINE. ..."

"... Are all the Game Situations Equivalent ? Have all game situations the same quantity, value, or measure ? Is the quality to score a basket in the beginning of the 3rd. quarter the same as the quality to score a basket in overtime ?
Do game analysts think that there are situations in the game in which a special situation of the game could have an effect upon player production, as closing minutes of close games and playoff games ?
Not all game situations are registered by us with the same quantity, value, or measure. There are teams that use a plus/minus system that is weighted by both time of the game and how close the game is in score.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System works having some weight to time and situation of a score which would be of interest to our coaches.
How coaches manage the replacement of his players with fouls (at every level of the game) and time outs in the closing minutes are an example which is discussed in the this board "Statistics & Statisticians" > Specific Game Situations Analysis. .."

Kobe Bryant's Impact on the Lakers
Goes Far Beyond What Statistics Can Measure

From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Kobe Bryant's Impact on the Lakers Goes Far Beyond What Statistics Can Measure ' by David Friedman
"... Quantifying something is very valuable, if it is truly possible to accurately do so--but there is no value in quantifying something if adequate measuring tools do not exist.
I frequently use basketball statistics as a tool to illustrate a point about the performance of a player or a team but I make sure to indicate the limitations of what basketball statistics can quantify; for instance, while I do sometimes mention assist totals and averages I have also documented that assists are very subjective..."
"... A "stat guru" can tell you that Kobe Bryant is more valuable than Shannon Brown but no one needs to do a scientific study to figure that out--and it seems like many "stat gurus" struggle with the concept that Kobe Bryant is more valuable than Pau Gasol, which is really funny considering how Gasol somehow morphed from a one-time All-Star into--by some accounts--the most versatile big man in the NBA simply by joining forces with Bryant a little more than two seasons ago..."
"... after all, at this point the NBA is struggling just to properly keep track of the basic box score statistics that are the raw numbers that go into the formulas invented by "stat gurus."
How can a "player rating" be definitive when it includes assist, turnover, steal and blocked shot numbers that are highly subjective? Even rebounds can be fishy at times when there are taps/tips. ... "
"... in his book The Jordan Rules, Sam Smith noted that Jordan would ride his teammates very hard in practice because he wanted to weed out anyone who was weak minded; Jordan figured that if you could not stand up to him on the practice court then you would disappear during crucial moments in a game..."
"... There is no way to quantify leadership, heart, work ethic, determination--but that does not mean those things don't exist. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Per-minute Statistics ~ Player Contribution Measure

Time played is a parameter not used with frequency in player's valuation although it is included in the box stats.
To relate player's valuation with his minutes played will give us his "efficiency", degree of cooperation into the team and with his teammates, interesting factor for the coach, the player
and the game analyst.
The team's 'efficiency' per minute is obtained by dividing the valuation points, taken from the statistics, by the possible play minutes ( 40 or 48 ) and the mean of player's efficiency per minute by dividing newly by 200 or 240 ( total minutes played by 5 players on the court ).
The result compared with the player's individual ( valuation / minutes played ) and multiplied by his minutes in play will give us his efficiency or degree of cooperation over or under the team's mean.

From the moment that you can have only five players on the floor at one time, which invariably leads to some players seeing more action than others, how can you measure the contribution of players who play less and thus have fewer points, rebounds, and so on, than the starters?
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System uses the per-minute stat to measure a player's value in terms of any other raw data stat for players with a low range of minutes played.
Say that one player scores eight points in a game, however, plays only eight minutes.
His per-minute scoring average is one point per minute, which extrapolated to a 40-minute game, would be 40 points per game.
But, actually, nobody in the NBA, WNBA or Euroleague, for that matter - averages 40 points per game. Suddenly, those eight points looks more impressive.
Although coaches find the per-minute stat helpful in evaluating players, but it has its limitations. Longer time periods belongs surely to the best players, and shorter time periods may yield misleading stats.
"... Imagine a player that scores a three-pointer in his first minute of play and then sat out the rest of the game. Does anyone truly believe that he would've scored 144 points (3 x 48) in that game had he played the 48 minutes ? ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Simultaneous Fouls and the Alternating Possession Rule
"... A1 attempts a 3-point jump shot and is fouled by B1 before landing on the court. While the ball is in the air A2 fouls B2 whilst attempting to get position for the rebound.
Both teams are in the bonus. There is an interval of not less than a second between the whistle of each official.
What about the proper ruling and the statistical registration in the eBA System ? ..."
This situation must be regarded simultaneous fouls by definition. As we know, in case of simultaneous fouls there is no free throws shooting.
The official goes to the point of interruption to decide which team had control of the ball and where they would get the ball.

In this play neither team had control of the ball because it was in the air, therefore the official applies to the alternating possession procedure to determine which team have control for the throw in, in a spot which must be nearest to where the ball became dead.
eBA Statistical Registration=
If the alternating possession rule is in favour of the team which had the ball control ( in the example, Team A ), we register only the committed fouls and the same possession goes on.
If the alternating possession rule is in favour of the team which had not the ball control ( in the example, Team B ), we register the committed fouls, a team steal for Team B and a Team TO against Team, in order to begin a new possession.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Video Game Analysis ~ Guidelines & Rules

The game is over: the game analyst works with his video and detects a turnover of our team caused by a referee's error.
Let's say a loose ball fight between our player in the offense and a defender: this player touches the ball which goes outbounds, but a ref calls the contrary.
Which is the game analyst register according the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System: it's a turnover, without doubt, but we penalize the player's individual rating because a ref's error ?
This question refers to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System creation: the game analyst must give the report to the Coach based in each situation analysis, and not only, as in the case above, to the ref calls.

In the specific event of our example: the play was concluded, the possession was reverted, the ball is in opponents' hands. There is a turnover, the game analyst certifies throughout the video analysis that there was and error on referee' s decision, but he can't punish the player again with the TO register.
eBA Statistical Registration=
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System registration is one "Team Turnover": this register doesn't affects the possessions balance nor punishes, as said, the player again.

Friday Press Clippings:
Pace and Possessions by Phil Londen

From Basketball Free for All
By Phil Londen
Download source here: ' Pace and Possessions ' by Phil Londen
"... For being such critical statistics, pace and possessions are rarely referenced except in the most general sense. ..."
"... Pace is simply an estimation of the number of possessions a team has per-48 minutes (length of regulation game). ..."
"... What then, precisely, is a possession? A possession is a team’s uninterrupted control of the basketball and can only end in a variety of ways (a possession is different than a play; a possession can encompass multiple plays).
A possession can end with a made field goal, a defensive rebound, a turnover, or in a foul being called. ... "
"... In order to estimate the number of possessions, you simply pick one team and use their numbers from the box score to run the calculations.
It doesn’t matter which team you use, as the number of possessions are roughly the same (although one team could have a couple of possessions more than the other team).
Both the simpler and more accurate calculations provide similar numbers of 86.6 possessions and 85.0 possessions, respectively. ..."
"... In general terms, it is important to recognize that pace can distort statistics by judging teams based upon different numbers of attempts, for example.
It is important to recognize when to use pace-adjusted statistics (Offensive and Defensive Ratings for example) and when to use raw statistics (points per game or points allowed per game for example). ..."
"... Imagine the fastest paced team in the league and the slowest paced team played against each other. If the fastest team won the game and the game was played at a fast pace, you could point to the pace and say that the fastest team dictated the pace of them game to their advantage. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Calculating Offensive Rebounding Percentage in Basketball from a Box Score

Offensive rebounding percentage is a very utilitarian statistic in determining the worth of players. But the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System states that the number of total offensive rebounds can be useful, but it isn't as accurate as the OR% ~ offensive rebounding percentage.
To come upon a player or team's offensive rebounding percentage from the data of a box score, you must:

• Specify the range of your calculations: it is possible to apply the offensive rebounding percentage to examine and note the similarities or differences of multiple teams or multiple players; nevertheless, you need to do these calculations individually. Look for and gather a series of players or a series of teams to assess the similarities and calculate each series one by one.
• Find at the box score the statistics necessary for supply the offensive rebounding percentage calculations: the number of offensive rebounds, the number of team offensive rebounds and the number of defensive rebounds by the opponent.
• Determine the sum together of the number of team offensive rebounds plus the number of defensive rebounds the opposing team grabbed. This arithmetic addition of these two numbers is known as the total number of rebounds available.
• Perform a division with the number of offensive rebounds, from the player o the team, depending on what you are calculating, by the total number of rebounds available. The quantity obtained by calculation is the OR% ~ offensive rebounding percentage for the team or player.
• Keep on these calculations as many times as necessary. Once you have done a set of these calculations, only now you have the right data to start comparing the players or teams and detect which players or teams are the best at recovering offensive rebounds.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Deflection is one half of one Steal ?
"... Defender B1 deflects a pass from A1 in direction of B2, who finally catch the ball. Did B1 or B2 get credited with the steal in this situation ?
Unmistakably, when a defender intercepts and controls a pass, or where he looks for and gathers the ball fairly from the dribbler, these situations are a unique steal... but what about when a defender deflects a pass to a fellow member of his own team ?
If the team plots a freestanding deflections category, we'll have any problems and the actions of B1 will be registered and recognized, but, on the contrary, if B2 doesn't catch the ball, the deflection is nothing because the Team A would merely secure and keep the possession.
Has the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System any way to give each player half a steal in situations where a ball is deflected or deprived and concludes in the hands of a a fellow member of his own team ? ..."

It's OK! Some coaches take stats of the deflections. More often than not, the player with the most deflections at the end of the year is usually the player who is named the team top's defensive player. Deflections may never find their way into the official box score statistics, but it is found at our Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis eBA System and you can bet that coaches understand their importance!
About the Concept=
When we speaks about deflection, we refers the action of causing any pass to stray from its intended course, without getting yet the ball possession.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration=
Here you have a good example about the analysis of a deflection: "Forcing an opponent Turnover". The register of the deflections forcing an opponent turnover is deeply developed ( clicking ) here..
References=
In principle I don't believe that registering a steal by halves being correct because the reasons developed at the Basketball Statistics Register Course in eBA ONLINE and will be continued in the right topic: Steal Statistics: Cases & Register at the Processing Statistics eBA Forums Board.

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Statistical Regression

Given a pair of related measures ( X and Y ) on each of a set of items, the term "regression" is used to characterize the manner in which one of the measures (for example the Y measures) change as the other measure ( in this case, the X measure) changes.
For any set of related measures, it is possible to specify a line that approximates the mean of the Y measures for those items with a given X measure.
By revealing how the mean of the Y measures change as the various X measures change, this line is understood to describe the regression of Y on X.

It is noteworthy that for the same set of related measures there is always a second regression line that describes the regression of X on Y.
The regression line is the predicted value of Y for each value of X.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Are all basketball rebounds created equal ?

We know the eBA Registration System rules about contested and uncontested rebounds qualification, and also the credit of the rebounds by zones and number of players in the play.
But, the question is: all the rebounds are created equal ?
Gaining a rebound than would have gone to another teammate and gaining one of these highly contested rebounds should have different values.
Creating extra possessions for your team can sometime be less easily perceived than the stats state indirectly.
How the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System express as a number or measure or quantity who are those players that help a team gain those additional extra possessions ?

Just in the actual "live Chat" from the Annual eBA Clinic, ( every Saturday 08:00 and 21:00 GMT ) we are working on this concept: the creation of extra possessions for one´s team can sometime be less easily perceived than the stats suggest, so we are looking for new ways to discover and to quantify those players that help a team gain those additional extra possessions.
I think the best way to assign province and responsibility' assignment for possessions with few mistakes is based on the how many possessions end up in positive and negative results as a consequence of TO, steals, FG%, etc. But we have to consider that there are players who have impact to a very great degree on possessions that are not well measured by the traditional statistics.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System is an excellent way to get or measure the impact those role players perform but don't get credit for in the stats sheet. The statistics analysis do an excellent work of revealing us which players do and do not gain those "extra" possessions for their teams, as well as indicating us those players who lose a lot of possessions for their teams without returning those numbers back.
