Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Free Throw Modifier Statistics
A typical formula to calculate the basketball possessions is:
Possessions= FGA Field Goals Attempted -OR Field Goals Attempted +TO Field Goals Attempted +0.4* Free Throws Attempted
In those traditional statistics systems, because two free throws do not always equal one possession (for example, in some situations one or three free throws may be awarded), they employs the multiplier 0,44 ( and sometimes 0,5 ) for free throws attempted, which is not always exact.
Free Throw Modifier: Basketball analysts express statistics in terms of possessions, so they need to make an adjustment for the fact that two free throws do not always constitute a possession. Three-point plays, three-shot fouls, and technicals all increase the number of free throws per possession. Therefore, those analysts need to use something less than 0.5 when multiplying by free throes to calculate possessions and revealed that the appropriate multiplier is 0.44.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis looking for exactness, register the real number of times the team reached the line for a serial of 2 or 3 free throws with the concept UP TO THE LINE , remarking between parenthesis the number of times the last throw was MADE.
This concept is fully explained and discussed at eBA CLINICS ONLINE.
