Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated
Are the individual statistics of good players on bad teams underrated in raw form ?
Are the individual statistics of bad players on good teams overrated in raw form ?
Some reflexions to begin the discussion:
1) Most teams without their best player will turn down the averages than with and probably lower than league average with the best players still included, so an adaptation must be overdone it in the team analysis in the cases of best players off.
2) There is team influence on player FG% and the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis performs adaptations either in the score or in the evaluation of the score. But our System takes always in account that the player is utmostly agent or cause of the shots he takes.
3) A player on a bad team may take more hard shots and fewer not hurried ones and vice versa on a good team, so the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis takes all of these shots out and analyze the remaining shooting precision.
4) Efficiency connected with statistics might become greater on a better team when the defense needs to move outward and defend so many other menaces. However, from another point of view, the percentage of touches might grow worse. When you're encircled by better players, you might get less touches than if you are the exclusive talent on a bad team.
5) And finally, good teammates among the good players will still get some recognition, bad teammates on the court will not gain as many bonus points and look inferior in individual ratings because of their unsatisfactory influence on other teammate shooting.

Friday Press Clippings: Statistics and the Human Element
From Basketball Statistics.com
by Jon Nichols
Download source here: 'Statistics and the Human Element '
"... How far can we go? Can we truly measure everything that goes on in a basketball game? More importantly, can we use those measurements to evaluate individual players and project how they will do on other teams?
As crazy as that may sound, I would bet there are a few people out there that think it’s possible. Play-by-play and game tracking data open up many possibilities. Throw in shot charts and you can come up with a whole bunch of different numbers. ..."
"... My hypothesis is this: numbers do the best job of conveying how a player has performed in the past and how he will do in the immediate future, since this will most likely be dictated by his past performance. If a guy has been shooting 45% on three-pointers this season, there’s a good chance he’ll make some long range shots against you if you leave him open. ..."
"... In addition, scouting isn’t as subjective and random as you may think. Jack Mula, formerly of the New England Patriots, discussed how the team always used “systemic scouting” to establish their dominance. With this system, the coaches made it clear what they needed from each position, and it was the scouts’ job to find players that met this criteria. ..."
"... To sum it up, it’s all about balance. Teams that are relying solely on subjectivity and scouting are probably making a big mistake, and the same thing goes for teams that only use numbers (although I doubt any of those teams exist). The premise of Composite Score is that when multiple people have different ideas about the same thing, they’re all probably right about some of the issues, so you need to combine all of their knowledge. The same thing goes for the interaction between scouting and statistics. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
About the Points Created and the Player Contribution
How much value is placed on an assist ? Like the problems with rebounds and blocked shots, standard formulas try to arbitrarily assign a value to assists that would give credit to the 'assistant' and simultaneously take the same account of credit away from the 'assisted'. Assists, though, unlike rebounds or blocked shots, have a definite scoring possession associated with them: there is no assists without points scored.
An individual floor percentage could be a way for not only evaluate the offensive efficiency of players, but also to calculate the points created by each player.
"Individual Floor Percentage"= scoring possessions by a player divided by his total possessions.
"Player's Scoring Possessions"=
field goals that weren't assisted on
+ a not specified percentage of his field goals that were assisted on
+ a not specified percentage of his assists
+ free throw made that represent a team scoring possession.
"Player's Total Possessions"=
all his scoring possessions
+ his missed field goals
+ free throws that weren't rebounded by his team
+ turnovers.
The question to go on with this topic resides in the value of that "not specified percentage" in each field.

About the Bench Scoring Percentage - Value & Analysis
"... How to measure the influence over the 'Bench Points Percentage', in the case of a season starter which in any o some games, by some reason of injury or coach decision, come from the bench and plays nearly its minutes played average ? ..."
A relevant contribution of the eBA System is to take the bench points of our team AND from the opponents not only as a Stats quantity, but as a center part of a game basketball analysis.
You can see it's analysis and discussion of the Bench Points Percentage Stats at the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis area, which includes, among others, the following aspects:
Bench Scoring= game's total, by quarter, at each quarter by separate, at game' last five minutes, shooting averages, changes quantity by game, etc. from our team and from the opponents teams all over the season.
Commentary: The Bench Scoring Stat are more relevant at the college level. Most players who goes on to the NBA may scores 20 points a game at least once a season. Nevertheless, many a winning college team gets exposed in the NCAA for its lack of depth at their bench.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Basketball Free Throw Modifier Statistics
A typical formula to calculate the basketball possessions is:
Possessions= FGA Field Goals Attempted -OR Field Goals Attempted +TO Field Goals Attempted +0.4* Free Throws Attempted
In those traditional statistics systems, because two free throws do not always equal one possession (for example, in some situations one or three free throws may be awarded), they employs the multiplier 0,44 ( and sometimes 0,5 ) for free throws attempted, which is not always exact.
Free Throw Modifier: Basketball analysts express statistics in terms of possessions, so they need to make an adjustment for the fact that two free throws do not always constitute a possession. Three-point plays, three-shot fouls, and technicals all increase the number of free throws per possession. Therefore, those analysts need to use something less than 0.5 when multiplying by free throes to calculate possessions and revealed that the appropriate multiplier is 0.44.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis looking for exactness, register the real number of times the team reached the line for a serial of 2 or 3 free throws with the concept UP TO THE LINE , remarking between parenthesis the number of times the last throw was MADE.
This concept is fully explained and discussed at eBA CLINICS ONLINE.

"... I calculated the average net rating (offensive rating minus defensive rating) of all lineups featuring a player with an Adjusted Plus-Minus of greater than three at each position. ..."
"... The easiest way to understand this is to look at it graphically ..."
"... Things get especially interesting when you look at the home/road splits. At home, small forwards still reign supreme. However, the little guys essentially catch up to the big men in terms of importance.
On the road, though, it appears having a solid interior is crucial. The importance of great guards is minimized greatly and centers and power forwards are well ahead of the rest of the pack. ..."
"... A second concern might be the quality of players in each position among those that qualify. In other words, if there are 20 point guards with an Adjusted Plus-Minus above three but they’re all at 3.01, it’s no surprise that they’ll look worse than the other positions. ..."
"... Three of the positions (point guards, power forwards, and centers) are bunched together, one is clearly lower than the rest (small forwards), and one is clearly higher (shooting guards). This evidence further supports the original conclusion I made that small forwards are the most important.
After all, we have the weakest group to choose from at that position yet they still have the most positive effect. On the other hand, there are a lot of excellent shooting guards in the NBA, yet their impact is much less significant. And still, I have yet to find an excuse for point guards. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
When is a Forced or an Unforced Turnover ?
We have a turnover when your team has the ball, and you lose it to the other team. A turnover can come in the form of a stolen pass, a pass that you throw out of bounds, it can be where they steal the ball away from your dribbler, it can be where you have a player stand in the paint for over three seconds, etc., etc, etc.

Photograph: Chris Russell ~ Dispatch.com
When the turnover does occurs or when a bad shot is forced during an ON BALL screen situation, that's means there is a direct influence of an opponent action: the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System refers to it as a FORCED TURNOVER. When the turnover does occur WITHOUT any opponent influence or interference: a bad pass you YOURSELF throw out of bounds, we call it an UNFORCED TURNOVER.
The value of the turnover, doesn't vary in our metric, being the same for both types, but the eBA System report give to the coach the total quantity and percentages of Forced and Unforced Turnovers by separate, leading so to a deeper analysis of our possessions.
The pages of the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, recently uploaded, shows the applicability and reports with reference the Forced and Unforced Turnovers.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About the Concept: 'Histogram'
"... What is a histogram? ..."
A histogram is a way of summarising data that are measured on an interval scale (either discrete or continuous). It is often used in exploratory data analysis to illustrate the major features of the distribution of the data in a convenient form. It divides up the range of possible values in a data set into classes or groups.

Graphic: eBA Basketball Encyclopedia
For each group, a rectangle is constructed with a base length equal to the range of values in that specific group, and an area proportional to the number of observations falling into that group. This means that the rectangles might be drawn of non-uniform height.

Basketball Book Review:

Leading with the Heart
By Mike Krzyzewski - Coach K
The book has four sections--"Preseason," "Regular Season," "Postseason," and "All-Season"--and each of those has four chapters.
Each chapter begins with three quotes ("Too many rules get in the way of leadership" leads off chapter 1), and ends with bulleted tips summing up the chapter's message. Between the quotes and the bullet points are anecdotes about Duke Basketball games and (occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside Basketball.
What you come away with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great Basketball coach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quin Snyder are probably going to become great Basketball coaches, and how anyone who's currently a coach can become a better coach....

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Points per Possession Basketball Statistic
Many coaches are now using what is called Points/Possession, or Turnovers/Possession. The Pts./Poss. is an impartial reliable stat when all things are considered.
However it doesn't take into account the optimal pace as which a team plays. Team A that receives 90 points may actually produce a better defensive efficiency than team B that allowed 80 points: in a fast paced game, Team A received 90 points but in 90 possessions.

Photograph: Kobe Bryant. Respect.
This means their defensive efficiency was 1.0. Team B on the other hand received only 80 points but in a much slower paced game in 60 total possessions. That is a defensive efficiency of 1.3 actually worse than team A who allowed ninety points.
Points per possession is a completely good stat but what is more important is to break it down into ranges such as an offensive or defensive efficiency when you score or allow 90-100 points, 80-90, 70-80 and so forth. The parameter we will find is that the team have better offensive and defensive efficiency ratings when he plays at its team's optimal pace. The eBA System do this break down in his "Quarters Reports", when the game is Analyzed every 5 minutes by separate.

NBA Truths by David Friedman
From 20 Second Timeout
By David Friedman
Download source here: ' NBA Truths by David Friedman '
"... What criteria are properly used to evaluate the so-called "supporting casts" of great players?
Some people still insist that Michael Jordan single-handedly carried the Chicago Bulls to six championships, despite the fact that Jordan had one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players by his side during each of those title runs--and despite the fact that Jordan's career playoff record sans Scottie Pippen is 1-9.
That is not a misprint--the player who is often called the greatest of all time won exactly one playoff game without having Pippen as a teammate. ..."
"... There is no doubt that Michael Jordan belongs on the short list of players who could legitimately be given the somewhat mythical title of "greatest basketball player of all-time" (I say "somewhat mythical" because there is no realistic, objective way to compare a shooting guard who played under 1990s rules and conditions with, say, a center who played under 1960s rules and conditions--such comparisons can be fun and occasionally even enlightening but they can never be conclusive).
Is it really necessary to try to artificially enhance Jordan's "case" for all-time greatness by falsely demeaning the skill sets, talents and contributions of his teammates? ..."
"... Note that it is possible to make an objective, skill set based comparison of Bryant and James without saying much--positive or negative--regarding their teammates.
So why do some people insist on making asinine statements to the effect that if James were a Laker the Lakers would win more than 70 games or that if Bryant were a Cav the Cavs would not be as good as they are now?
It is fascinating to observe how so many commentators rush to denigrate James' "supporting cast" in much the same fashion that Jordan's "supporting cast" has been belittled over the years. ..."
"... Gasol is clearly a skilled big man but he is not any more skilled now than he was two years ago. What changed is that Gasol no longer carries the burden of being his team's best player; Kobe Bryant has that responsibility for the Lakers, meaning that Gasol can post up without being double-teamed as frequently and Gasol can get an open face up or slashing opportunity almost any time he wants simply by setting a screen for Bryant and waiting for his man to trap Bryant.
That is why Gasol's shooting percentage has soared and that is why Gasol's offensive rebounding is at career-high levels: Bryant attracts so much defensive attention that Gasol (and other Laker bigs) often have a free run to the offensive boards.
Here is a challenge for all of you "stat gurus" out there: find out how many NBA bigs increased their offensive rebounding productivity in their ninth and tenth NBA seasons. Gasol did not suddenly learn new rebounding tricks; he simply has an easier path to the offensive boards now. ..."

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
About the Steals Concept and Statistical Registration
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally gains control of the ball from an offensive player. This can be done by deflecting and controlling, catching, or batting (to a teammate) a pass or dribble of an offensive player. A steal may happen while the offensive player is dribbling, holding the ball, or by intercepting a pass. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.
Stealing the ball requires concentration, good anticipation, speed and fast reflexes and good hustle, all common traits of a good defender. However, like blocked shots, steals aren't always a perfect gauge of a player's defensive abilities. An unsuccessful steal can result in the defender being out of position and unable to recover in time. Therefore, a steal is a gamble. And a steal usually leads to a fast break, the most exciting play in the sport.
If an offensive player loses possession of the basketball due to a steal, he/she is recorded as making a turnover and the defender is recorded with a steal, forced or unforced depending upon the play development.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System registers, in addition to the traditional stats, the points made from the forced and unforced steals done during the game. This number is not always similar, as people usually thinks, to the opponent's points off turnovers.
There is no necessarily prototypical position from which a player may get many steals from. While smaller, quicker guards tend to accumulate the most steals, there are many exceptions. For example, forward Rick Barry led the NBA in steals in 1974-75, and for many years center Hakeem Olajuwon lead his team in the category, consistently ranking among the league's leaders. Therefore, the eBA System registers the area and the whole situation where the steal occurred.
Steals were first recorded in the NBA's 1973-74 season. Kendall Gill ( on December 26, 1976 ) and Larry Kenon ( on April 3, 1999 ) are tied for most steals in a regular season NBA game with eleven.
The most steals in an NBA season is 301 by Alvin Robertson in 1985-86.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About the Statistical Registration of a Shooting Foul
"... If a foul is committed on the shot, ( made or missed ) does the shot attempt get averaged into your field goal percentage? ..."
Two Situations in the question:
1.- If a foul is committed on a shot and the shot is made: the shot attempt GET averaged in the field goal percentage as a "Field Goal Made" and the possession is ended and counted. We have a Foul Made and a Foul Received, too.
2.- If a foul is committed on a shot and the shot is missed: the shot attempt DOES NOT GET averaged in the field goal percentage, from the moment the player receives two or three free-throws from the line and the possession is not ended.
For the possessions count in this situation: if the last free-throw of a serial ( of 2 or 3 ) is made the possession end with a "Up to the Line Made" for shooter's team ( see Global Basketball Encyclopedia for terminology; and see the example at the pages uploaded at the eBA System ).
If the last free-throw of a serial ( of 2 or 3 ) is missed, the possession end with a Defensive Rebound. An Offensive Rebound gives, you know, a second chance option. Foul Made and Foul received are counted, too.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About Basketball Statistics and Statisticians Lies
Stats don’t lie. Seriously. If Joe Blow scores 20 points in a game, he scores 20 points. If he does it on 10 for 36 shooting with 12 turnovers, and Johnny Analyst praises Joe Blow’s brilliant offensive performance, then it’s Johnny Analyst doing the lying, not the stats.

Offensive and defensive rebounding are different things.
I mean, it was 14 years ago that the NCAA began distinguishing between offensive and defensive rebounds.
It was a major advancement in stats keeping. Yet, with the exception of Fran Fraschilla, analysts will simply refer to a team’s “rebounding” either qualitatively or quantitatively, which often is misleading.
These are two distinct, albeit related, skills. Offensive rebounding requires individual effort. Defensive rebounding is more team oriented.
Florida is a great defensive rebounding team. They are not a great rebounding team - they are less than great on the offensive end. (Ken Pomeroy)

Most of them think that they have taken good training in terms of decision-making and that their coaches have helped them, although some declare this is an innate ability.
Players say they feel quite confident when they must resolve 1x1 situations, as well as they state it is necessary to ‘read’ the defense and, consequently, decide what to do. Outside players, who also make other moves to throw, are important in these situations.
Centers prefer beginning a 1x1 attack with their back to the basket. As for picks, they think their decisive capacity must be improved. All of them state it is essential to ..."
