Personal Foul: A First-Person Account
of the Scandal that Rocked the NBA
by Tim Donaghy

The media has speculated and sports fans have debated, but until now no one has known the real story. Personal Foul takes an in-depth look at former NBA referee Tim Donaghy and the betting scandal that rocked professional basketball.

Containing never-before-seen documentation and correspondence between the league office, referees, coaches, players and owners, this is the decisive book that reveals exactly what was done and how it all happened. Which games were affected and how? Is it true that referees targeted particular players? Just how much did the NBA know and when? How did the mafia get involved?

Personal Foul answers all of these questions and more. Thrilling and poignant, Personal Foul takes the reader on the journey of one man wrestling his own demons and shines a light on a culture of gambling and "directive" officiating in the NBA that promises to change the way sports fans view the game forever.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
Which is the Real Value of a Steal ?

"... Some analysis systems works upon the argument by which steals are the best defensive play there is, and that it's value will show up on the offensive end, based on the theory that steals lead to easy baskets.

... Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez, left, attempts the steal from Memphis Grizzlies guard Greg Buckner (7) in the first half of an NBA basketball game Tuesday, April 7, 2009, in Memphis, Tenn. ... AP Photo/Lance Murphey
Photograph: thespec.com

Now, my question is which is the real value of a steal from the point of view that the confirmed and permanent risking for steals costs the defense about as many points defensively ( in open shots and help fouls ) as they get in easy baskets from successfully stealing the ball and converting. ..."

An interesting question and here you have some data for the discussion:
The eBA Basketball Statistics Archives tell us that players who get steals are the most valuable when they are forwards and centers or are players who don't shoot a lot. Nevertheless, that said, I think that players who get steals, on average, tend to be valuable at EVERY position and careless of how much they shoot.

With reference to those players who are "permanent risking for steals", take into account that players who gamble may also hurt their team, but that does not identify the main part of players who get lots of steals. And as we stated at the eBA Clinics last year, to analyze team statistics to measure the value of players ONLY with certain attributes may lead to deceptive results.

Relationship between the Pedagogical Variables
of Coaching a Mini-Basketball Team

From Revista de Psicología del Deporte
By María Cañadas, Isabel Parejo, Sergio J. Ibáñez, Javier García, & Sebastian Feu
Download source here: ' Relationship between the Pedagogical Variables of Coaching a Mini-Basketball Team '

"... This study arises from the importance of analyzing the coaching process and knowing how to coach in the first stages of sports initiation.

The purpose of this study was to analyze how a basketball coach establishes teaching the game phases in youth categories, through the relationship between the pedagogical variables that define each of the
coaching tasks. ..."

"... The importance of analyzing coaching situations resides in the fact that these situations imply practice conditions through
which players acquire and execute sportlearning content. The teaching of team sports receives much attention by researchers.

There is a need to know how the processes of teaching a sport, both in the educational environment as well as the athletic environment, although it appears that until now there have not been clear, conclusive responses. Basketball is a sport of cooperation and opposition in which there are two game phases which are determined by possession of the ball. ..."

"... There are principles for sport teaching that help coaches design training tasks. The majority of these are based on theoretical
aspects, which presents a problem when trying to apply them to real training situations. For that reason, experts propose the analysis of the training process with the goal of generating knowledge that arises from practice. ..."

"... Statistical analysis. For the statistical analysis, the computer packet SPSS 15.0 was utilized. First, a descriptive analysis of the game phase variable was carried out.

To analyze the relationship between the variables, a non-parametric inferential analysis (chi -square and cont ingency coefficient) was carried out. Through the value from the corrected standardized
residuals (RAS), the differences between the variables were interpreted (>|1.96|)...."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
About the Points Off Turnovers Concept

More of the third of all regular season games played, are "decided by" points off turnovers. When we Analyze a Basketball game and it is said here that turnover scores were the "deciding factor" in a game, eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System means that the turnover points led to one team wining the game and the other losing, and without such turnovers, the won-lost result have been switched.

UAA's Nicci Miller, left, and Sarah Herrin, right, force a turnover during the Seawolves 100-48 season opening victory over the Vulcans at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Sunday, November 15, 2009.
Photograph: adn.com

Points are attributable to turnovers in one of two ways - directly or indirectly. By "directly" leading to a score, eBA System mean that a fumble recovery or interception was returned for a fast break attack, and a score in the first 4/6 seconds of the shooting clock ( see the Shot Clock ).

Consequently, by "indirectly" leading to points, we mean that a fumble recovery or interception return immediately led to a set offense play which culminated in a field goal in the second sequence of the shooting clock, after 6/8 seconds play till 24; the turnover did not produce any points in and of itself, but the opponent team did score on the ensuing offensive play.

( Excerpt from the introduction to my exposition "Points Off Turnovers" at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinics. )

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Available Rebounds and the Basketball Rebound Percentage

In the case that a team does miss a shot, it can prolong its possession and give itself an additional chance to score by rebounding its own misses. Team rebounds per game, team offensive rebounds per game, etc, are not a worthwhile stat, that a statistical myth:

Oreb% = Offensive Rebs / (Offensive Rebs + Opponent's Defensive Rebs)

In this way, we only measure how many rebounds a team catches based on what's available.

For example, if you use "team offensive rebounds per game," a team that shoots 30% is probably going to catch a lot of offensive rebounds, whether they're a good rebounding team or not.

If you use Oreb%, you're looking at a ratio of how many rebounds a team grabbed compared to how many were available.

pictures
Photograph: Vedia PhotoStream

Rebound percentage: The percentage of all available rebounds that a player or team catches, often fails into offensive rebound percentage and defensive rebound percentage.

This is a better measure of rebounding physical ability than rebound rate because it adjusts for game pace, although total rebound percentage is distortioned by the ratio of offensive and defensive rebound opportunities.

Therefore, a team with a really great defense will have its total rebound rate artificially exaggerated because defensive rebounds are much easier to catch.

Usually, rebound opportunities are estimated for players based on the team's rebound opportunities per minute, but play-by-play data as that used by the eBA System can identify a player's exact opportunities.

Rebound percentage for teams = Reb / ( Reb + OPPReb )

Rebound percentage for players =
( Reb * Min ) / (( TMReb + OPPReb ) / ( TMMin / 5 ))

"The Basketball Rebound Analysis and Statistical Registration" )

Friday Press Clippings:
Hayes, Adelman, and Morey: Taking Stats Seriously at 'The Dream Shake'

From The Dream Shake By Matt Oalxyz
Download source here: ' Hayes, Adelman, and Morey: Taking Stats Seriously '

"... Now, here is what I mean when I say we should take stats seriously. In some sense, this attitude is created from a failure to really believe what the statistics say.

Adjusted Plus-Minus and a variety of other metrics have consistently shown Chuck to be one of the best defensive players in the league over his career, and they really do mean that. They do not mean this in some nuanced way. They simply mean that, when Chuck is on the court, the Rockets defend better than when he is sitting on the bench.

And so, if one is tempted to say that Chuck will have trouble with Greg Oden, Andrew Bynum, or even guys like Gasol or Dirk (though let me say that everyone is going to have trouble with Dirk and Gasol, though I'd bet smaller, quicker players like Chuck might have an easier time against them, and I think this was born out in the playoffs last year), that temptation ultimately stems from a failure to take what the statistics say seriously. ..."

"... Combine all these variables and what do we have? According to a formula called "Expected Win Probability When Going For It," Pattani believed that the Patriots had an 80.5 chance of winning the game. By punting, they had a 79.0 chance of winning.

So my argument (made on Monday's podcast) that Bill Belichick should have "played the percentages and punted" was technically wrong. Barely. Belichick did play the percentages if you took those percentages at face value.

I am not disputing the numbers or the methods for achieving them. But ..."

"... Here's the issue: the stats say that the payoff was higher by going for it, and they really do say that, and to disregard them because they say something that seems to deny the assumptions you've made about football since your childhood is to utilize statistics merely as a way to confirm your own biases.

If we're going to accept some of what advanced stats have to say, we should be willing to accept what those same stats have to say about more general things. Yes, context matters, and if the statistical analysis keeps going against the grain and contradicting perceived experience, then something may be awry, but we should not jump to that conclusion just because the expected win tables contradict what your high school football coach or John Madden told you about winning games. ..."

"... We're conditioned, perhaps by the experience of the Stats Revolution in baseball, that there's going to be a great deal of resistance among the NBA establishment towards this sort of thinking.

I think, however, that the baseball experience was, for whatever reason, somewhat unique. Maybe it was unique because of the sort of people who own baseball clubs and comment on baseball teams, but in any case baseball statistics developed very differently from basketball stats.

Sabermetrics started with Bill James doing all of his statistics by himself, placing an ad in the Sporting News, and sending out binders of his abstracts to the people who responded to the ad. There was resistance to baseball stats from the start, enough that teams didn't start using computers to look at basic statistics until the mid-80s, and that was only (if I remember right) the White Sox, who employed STATS Inc.

Perhaps because baseball stat geeks went against the established "small ball" recipe for success, they encountered a lot of hostility, but it's not as if this view was unheard of. It was pioneered by Branch Rickey, utilized by Earl Weaver with great success, etc...."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
The Basketball Statistician's Digest ~ The Formula TENDEX

TENDEX - by Dave Heeren (1988): The TENDEX is one the coefficients of player efficiency evaluation more used by the Basketball coaches, and was the basis of the work of the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, created in the same year, and between the first systems in apply this evaluation mean.

This coefficient was developed by Dave Heeren in 1988 and is the methodological basis of an annual publication (Basketball Abstract) where the efficiency of all the players of the NBA are evaluated.

Tendex=
Points Made + Total Rebounds + Assists + Blocks + Steals
- Turnovers - Missed Shots

On 1990, Manley, one of the most renowned American Basketball analysts, applies the same linear equation -only changing the factor's order-, calling it Individual Efficiency to evaluate the efficiency o his players:

Individual Efficiency=
Points Made + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks
- Missed Shots - Free Throws missed - Turnovers

Currently the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System applies this formula in a different way developed in our eBA Statistics Clinics.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Created Field Goal Percentage - The Goal Percentage w/out Assists

The cFG% ( created Field Goal Percentage ) is a stat applied by the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System which has the same formula as the FG% ( click here to this topic ) except that only field goals which are unassisted and which occur at least 5 seconds after an offensive rebound are counted.

The Created FG% is an attempt to measure how well a player can create his own shot without the benefit of those situations. Therefore, when we make the calculation of this statistic, assisted shots and shots from offensive rebounds are not counted. The whole fundamental of this statistics is just being discussed in the eBA 2010 Clinic's live chat.

Friday Press Clippings:
The Evolution of the Usage of the Three Point Shot

From 20 Second Timeout By David Friedman
Download source here: ' The Evolution of the Usage of the Three Point Shot '

"... The ABA is thought of as a run and gun league that featured guards launching three pointers from all angles, but ABA teams actually did not shoot that many three pointers--at least compared to NBA teams since the 1988-89 season.

In the ABA’s first season (1967-68), the Pittsburgh Pipers led the league with 243 three pointers made; in 2005-06, Ray Allen alone made 269 triples. In 1967-68, ABA teams averaged 111 three pointers made in 390 attempts. ..."

"... After the NBA-ABA merger in 1976-77, the three point shot went into mothballs for several seasons, largely because many established NBA owners did not want to incorporate anything from the ABA into their league.

Eventually, the NBA Board of Governors relented and the three point shot made its NBA debut in the 1979-80 season. ..."

"... The NBA did not warm up much to the three point shot the next year, either. In fact, three pointers made and attempted both plummeted dramatically from their already low levels.

At that time a player had to make at least 25 three pointers to qualify for the three point shooting percentage title; only eight players reached that mark in 1980-81. ..."

"... The three pointer slowly gained more acceptance in 1985 and 1986. In both of those seasons the NBA produced a full complement of 10 players on its three point field goal percentage leaderboard.

This is when Bird really started to utilize the three pointer as a weapon, ranking fourth in makes (56) and second in percentage (.427) in 1985 and first in makes (82) and fourth in percentage (.423) in 1986. ..."

"... Rick Pitino became the Knicks’ head coach in 1987-88, fresh off of taking Providence to the NCAA’s Final Four. Pitino was one of the first college coaches to take advantage of the three point shot and he brought that same philosophy to the NBA. ..."

"... In 1994-95 the NBA made a rules change that resulted in a tremendous increase in three point shots: the three point arc had been 23 feet nine inches from most spots and 22 feet in the corners but the league shortened that distance to a uniform 22 feet.

Now it seemed like virtually every NBA player thought that he was a three point shooter. ...."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About a Basketball Team Control Foul Statistical Registration

"... A1 shoots but fouls B1 (a) before the ball is in flight or (b) after the ball was in flight. ..."

Elaine Powell had a really great game with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. She also made a play at making the WNBA's plays of the week with her half-time buzzer beating midcourt heave to cut the Fever lead to 4 going into the locker room.

eBA Statistical Registration=
case a ) The ball was dead before it was in flight, so charge A1 with an UNFORCED TURNOVER (offensive foul) - not with a FGA - and a personal foul made. B1 is credited with a FORCED STEAL (charge drawn) and a personal foul received.
The official action: it will be signalled as a "team control foul".

case b ) Charge A1 with a FGA and a personal foul made. B1 is credited with a personal foul received.
The official action: will not indicate team control.

I look at them like, 'Fool, you're crazy.'
These guys are talking about some glass. We call it 'eating glass.'

That's all they like to do. They will run over the coaching staff and the referee and half the team there to get that rebound - at all costs...." Karl Malone

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Talking about Basketball... the Home Court Advantage Really Exists

Home teams may be, typically, better than away teams. Looking at home-away games during the first half of the season, the game trends indicates home teams often outmatch away teams.

This indicates that in the first half of the season, home teams are in a general and inherent manner stronger than away teams, in a relation of 70-75% of winning percentage.

During the second half, this difference related to the home teams is matched and home and away teams winning percentage are equals to the same degree. This reality brings to the conclusion that winning percentage of home teams concurrently goes down during this time.
Why this difference between the two halves of the season ?

On the remark that average score margin is highly mutually related to the quality of being able to win, we must take into consideration that average score margin can be adjusted for force of games agenda and variations in day-to-day ability.

A 2/3 winning record of home teams is often cited as attest that home court advantage really exists. But all the analysis records neither validate nor contradict that the home court advantage exists, only give us the necessity of a way to calculate it more carefully.
