Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About the Basketball Time Played Statistical Registration
"... Before a single free throw is attempted, A1 enters the game. The free throw is not scored, but there is a free-throw violation. The clock never starts and A1 leaves the game. The violation was against A1: how we must register the time played statistics ? And also, how to register if the violation was against another player ? ..."

eBA Statistical Registration=
We must register a game played to A1 since he had a violation and a turnover, as results of this foul. Enter ' 0 ' under minutes played. If the violation was against another player, therefore we don't charge A1 with a game played.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About a Traveling Violation, and a Forced or an Unforced Turnover
"... If a player, while holding the ball, touches the floor with a knee or any other part of the body other than hand or foot, what is the rule and the statistical registration ? ..."

Photograph: Matt Sullivan from The Star.com
If a player, while holding the ball, touches the floor with a knee or any other part of the body other than hand or foot, it results in a Traveling violation and a personal Turnover: forced or unforced ( without a defender interference ) depending upon the opponent action.
On the contrary, any action or pressure as result of the defender work, which causes the turnover, make it a Forced one.
If the action in the picture ends in traveling ( or any other violation...) against University of Louisville forward Jared Swopshire, on the centre, we must register a FORCED TURNOVER due to the pressure by Morehead State forward Maze Stallworth, on the right, who'll perform a FORCED STEAL.
See in our forum the forced / unforced topics and the exposition "Basketball Points Off Turnovers" at eBA ONLINE.

Basketball History ~ Great Basketball Moments:
First Basketball Game in History... !

The first basketball game was played on December 21, 1891 in the YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, with 2 teams of nine players each.
Mr. Naismith acted as referee and Mr. Stebbins, the school's janitor, stood ready with a ladder to retrieve the ball out of the basket should someone score.
He did not get much exercise, because the final score was 1 - 0. This did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players, who had so much fun that they were hooked on basketball, named because peach baskets had been used for goals.
This is a unique drawing of a japanese student from the school drawn "during that game".

The Use of In-Depth Statistical Analysis in Basketball
From The Biz of Basketball By Nick Kappel
Download source here: ' The Use of In-Depth Statistical Analysis in Basketball '
"... While this sort of in-depth statistical analysis makes sense for a slow-paced game such as baseball, a faster-paced game like basketball would be much more difficult to keep up with.
Not only that, but baseball keeps track of situational statistics, such as a player's batting average with runners in scoring position, batting average with two outs, or batting average after an 0-2 count.
If you dig a little deeper, you will discover statistics such as Value Over Replacement Player (VORP). This stat reveals how much a player contributes to his team in comparison to a 'fictitious replacement player' ..."
"... In-depth statistics such as VORP aren't as commonly known in the game of basketball.
Fans may know game stats of their favorite player, such as how many points or rebounds he averages per game, or how well he shoots from the foul line. But nobody is keeping track of how much Kobe Bryant contributes to his team in comparison to a 'replacement player'. ..."
"... What's the most efficient shot to take besides a lay-up?
Easy, says Zarren: a three-pointer from the corner.
What's one of the most misused, misinterpreted statistics?
'Turnovers are way more expensive that people think,' Zarren says.
'That's because most teams focus on the points a defense scores from the turnover but don't correctly value the offense's opportunity cost' that is, the points it might have scored had the turnover not occurred. ..."
"... Player points per minute, team points per possession, rebound percentage.
These are examples of stats that Hinkie uses to analyze a potential trade or draft choice. ..."
"... floor-time stats (individual player plus/minus; how a team fares with a certain player on the floor), 5-man unit stats (most-used five-man combos and how they fare together), player pairs (stats looking at team performance with each two-man pair on the court) and many, many more that frankly are too difficult to explain.
Despite the growing use of statistical analysis in basketball, both Ainge and Hinkie acknowledged the fact that other variables are considered when making personnel or strategic decisions..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About a NOT valid basket counted as GOOD... Official´s Win ?
"... This are the Triway Titans Basketball last 30 seconds of the 2007 season. The video analysis shows clearly that the basket is NOT valid, so what for the analysis ? How we register this play ? Official´s winning ? ..."
All our basketball statistics forums are plenty of this type of video-questions about statistics analysis: the statistician and / or the game analyst must register what happen in the game, and not to analyze the official's calls. Another people do this...
This is not an "correctable official error" case ( see this thread at eBA Forums ) neither we have possibility of giving a "team turnover" in order to avoid punishing a player twice ( see this thread at eBA Forums ).
Game is over, register the three-pointer missed by #11 White, and the offensive rebound and winning goal by the #33 white player under the basket and over the head of #30 Blue after a bad defensive move.
The only thing you can do is a commentary about this situation in the play-by-play report, for example, about the the bad defensive move of #30 Blue in the rebound defense...

Chapters in the Basketball History:
Richard (Rick) Francis Dennis Barry III
Richard (Rick) Francis Dennis Barry III (born March 28, 1944, in Elizabeth, New Jersey) is a retired American professional basketball player.

Rick Barry - 1977
Master of the skill of Making A Freethrow
He is considered by many veteran basketball observers to be one of the greatest pure small forwards of all time as a result of his very precise outside shot, uncanny court vision, knowledge and execution of team defense principles, tenacious and ofttimes demanding will to win, and unorthodox but accurate underhanded "granny shot" free throw shooting.
Barry is one of few elite players who have altered their games without losing effectiveness; he broke into the professional ranks as a rebounder and all-purpose points machine before he morphed into a primary ball distributor and lethal perimeter threat.
Named one of the 50 Greatest Players in history by the NBA in 1996, Barry is the only player to lead the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), ABA and NBA in scoring for an individual season. In 1987, Barry was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Barry also ranks on the short list of greatest underdog players in basketball history, as his teams repeatedly overachieved despite marginal talent around him. Longtime NBA writer Paul Ladewski has referred to him as Ricky Balboa, a reference to Rocky Balboa, the prize fighter of motion picture fame who was at his best in the face of long odds.

Allen Iverson Ends Short-Lived Retirement
From 20 Second Timeout By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Allen Iverson Ends Short-Lived Retirement '
"... Iverson's relatively modest statistics were actually pretty good for someone who has not played in an NBA game in a month and it is worth noting that he had the second best plus/minus number for the 76ers (-1, trailing only Iguodala's +1); in other words, the Nuggets did most of their damage when Iverson was not on the court. ..."
"... The game's outcome is hardly surprising; the Sixers were 5-15 prior to Iverson's arrival and had lost nine straight games. In fact, the Sixers have yet to win more than 41 games in a season since jettisoning Iverson early in the 2006-07 campaign; with Iverson onboard, they won at least 43 games in five of the seven full seasons prior to that and posted a .561 winning percentage (equivalent to 46 wins in an 82 game season) during the lockout shortened 1999 season, Iverson's third year in the league. ..."
"... Supposedly, Iverson's unwillingness to come off of the bench scared away most of his potential suitors but--as Iverson mentioned in his recent interview with John Thompson--prior to Iverson's arrival in Detroit there had never been a question about whether or not Iverson should be a starter. ..."
"... Whether or not you like Iverson, he has earned respect because of his productivity and because of how hard he plays. The reason that Berri's articles about Iverson are so detestable and the reason that I respond so forcefully to them is that it seems like Berri--a nobody in his primary field, someone whose work assuredly will not stand the test of time--is trying to make a name for himself as an NBA "stat guru" at Iverson's expense ..."
"... One of the great mysteries of the universe (or least the basketball universe) is why ESPN's Henry Abbott has seemingly made it his personal mission to heavily promote Berri's half baked basketball ideology; even other "stat gurus" are extremely skeptical about Berri's methodologies, yet Abbott incessantly links to Berri as if Berri has discovered the Holy Grail of basketball analysis. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About the Transformed Data in a Basketball Game Analysis
"... How and why can we transform data from a basketball game analysis ..."
As we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic ONLINE, sometimes, we transform data from a basketball game analysis, for example, to make fit the number of turnovers from one team to the steal of the other in relation to the total of possessions adding it to the statistics of the "team player".
I've never been a "fan" of transforming data, because you need a reason for log transformation. There are many types of transformations too.
but now, if you decide to do a transformation, then you should do the hypothesis test using transformed data.
The reason I don't like transforming data, is because interpreting the results is always problematic: telling a head coach about the log of the data points will always get you a puzzled look, and this is not good.
If the data are skewed badly enough, then you may want to consider:
a.- finding probable causes for the "outliers" and removing them, or
b.- using a nonparametric method.
However, if there's a really, really good reason, then there are virtually unlimited ways to transform data, as we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic - just make sure you pick the one that meets your analytical needs....
See in our forum the transformed data topics and the exposition "Basketball Statistics and Statisticians" at eBA ONLINE.

Unforgettable Basketball Legends: Bob Cousy
![]() ![]() |
Robert Joseph "Bob" Cousy (born August 9, 1928 in New York City) is a former American professional basketball player. The 6'1", 175 lbs. Cousy played point guard with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Boston Celtics from 1951 to 1963 and briefly with the Cincinnati Royals in the 1969-70 season. Born to French immigrants, Bob Cousy had a highly successful career with the Celtics, winning six championship rings, being voted into 13 All-Star and 12 All-NBA First and Second Teams and winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 1957. An excellent book was written ( see on the left ) by Bill Reynolds about 'Cousy: His Life and Career'. |
Bob Cousy - 1957 NBA MVP
Cousy played point guard with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Boston Celtics from 1951 to 1963 and briefly with the Cincinnati Royals in the 1969–70 season.
Cousy first demonstrated his basketball abilities while playing for his high school varsity team in his junior year. He obtained a scholarship to the College of the Holy Cross, where he led the Crusaders to berths in the 1948 and 1950 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament and was named an NCAA All-American for three seasons.Cousy was initially drafted as the third overall pick in the first round of the 1950 NBA Draft by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, but after he refused to report with the Blackhawks, he was picked up by the Boston Celtics.
Cousy had a highly successful career with the Celtics, winning six championship rings, being voted into 13 All-Star and 12 All-NBA First and Second Teams and winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 1957.
In his first 11 seasons in the NBA, Cousy led the league in assists eight consecutive times and introduced a new blend of ball-handling and passing skills, earning him the nicknames "The Cooz," "Houdini of the Hardwood", and—as he was regularly introduced at Boston Garden—"Mr. Basketball."
After his player career, he coached the Royals for several years, and even made a short comeback for the Royals at age 41. Afterwards, he became a broadcaster for Celtics games. He was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971, and in his honor, the Celtics retired his number 14 jersey and hung it into the rafters of the Boston Garden, where it has remained since.
Cousy was named to the NBA 25th Anniversary Team in 1971, the NBA 35th Anniversary Team in 1981, and the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996, making him one of only four players that were selected to each of those teams.
Sunday's Reflections on Basketball Statistics:
The Basketball Team Statistician as a Full-time Professional Career
"... From the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System requirements point of view the Basketball statistician must do this work on a full-time basis and must be eligible for a good compensation: as we are speaking about a professional career as a sports statistician. Although the reality show us that most persons who do sports statistics do this on a part-time basis and are paid, sometimes, only for the day for individual games.

It must be understood that the 'Basketball game analysis' is not a matter of collect sports results and provide the leagues and the media with significant information for their clients different and varied needs. ..."
"... The Basketball Team Statistician must have the skills to control, verify and examine once again his work all the time, in order to avoid mistakes.
He must confront all his work against the play-by-play, being vitally necessary a team work. ..."
"... The Basketball Team Statistician must be capable to read and understand a technical statisticians guide and make deep analysis having the ability to make sound decisions during the game. ..."

The Ultimate "Five Statistics Tool" Basketball Players
From 20 Second Timeout By David Friedman
Download source here: ' The Ultimate "Five Statistics Tool" Basketball Players '
"... Julius Erving put up the first--and most impressive--five-tool season. In 1975-76, he led the ABA in scoring (29.3 ppg) and ranked in the top seven or better in the league in each of the other four categories. He also placed eighth in two point field goal percentage and seventh in three point field goal percentage. ..."
"... Scottie Pippen’s five-tool season happened in 1994-95, year two of Michael Jordan’s first retirement. Pippen actually had slightly better numbers in 1993-94 but Horace Grant led the team in rebounding and blocked shots that year. Grant signed with the Orlando Magic prior to the 1994-95 season and his departure left a serious void in the paint, but Pippen’s all-around greatness helped to keep the Bulls afloat. ..."
"... Tracy McGrady became a five-tool player in 2002-03 by the narrowest of margins, averaging 1.653 spg (124 steals in 75 games), just eclipsing Darrell Armstrong’s 1.646 spg (135 steals in 82 games). McGrady, then playing for the Orlando Magic, led the NBA in scoring (32.1 ppg) and posted a healthy apg average (5.5).
His team leadership in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and blocked shots (.79) reflected the Magic’s weakness in the paint more than anything else, although his numbers were quite good for a guard, particularly one who carried such a heavy scoring load. ..."
"... Playing alongside Yao Ming in Houston, McGrady is unlikely to have another five-tool season. Few current players have the skills to even think of accomplishing this and those who do play alongside a teammate who specializes in one or two of the five categories; for instance, LeBron James will not lead Cleveland in rebounding or blocked shots as long as Zydrunas Ilgauskas is on the team. ..."
"... "Five-Tool" Players led their teams in PPG, RPG, APG, SPG and BPG in the same season.
"Multiple-Tool" Players led their teams in PPG, RPG and APG before the NBA and ABA officially began recording steals and blocked shots ..."
