Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
Defining Basketball Possessions and Basketball Plays
In our Basketball Statistics eBA Clinics, I have broadly defined a possession as a basketball instance which starts when one team gains control ( possession ) of the ball and ends when the team abandons the control of the ball.
Now, plays have the same characteristics as possessions, other than offensive rebounds establish anew play. Plays are not equal for both teams, because a team can shoot, miss, rebound the ball many times, resulting in several plays for one team and no play for the opponent.
Many times, plays are referred as possessions, therefore I recommend to be careful about the terminology. Number of plays can be counted or estimated as:
Plays= FGA + 0,44xFTA + TO
In a recent post I explained my opinion about the multiplying factor 0,44 coefficient, saying about that "...the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis, looking for exactness, register the real number of times the team reached the line for 2 or 3 free throws with the concept UP TO THE LINE, remarking between parenthesis the number of times the last throw was MADE. ...".
Finally, "play percentage" is the percentage of plays on which at least one point is scored.
