Pro Basketball Prospectus 2009-10 by Bradford Doolittle and Kevin Pelton

Pro Basketball Prospectus 2009-10
By Bradford Doolittle
and Kevin Pelton

For the last two seasons, Basketball Prospectus has been at the cutting edge of the NBA's statistical revolution, exploring how teams win and why as well as integrating plenty of old-fashioned tape and first-hand observation to analyze players and teams.

Now, we're following in the footsteps of our predecessors at Baseball Prospectus and our college counterparts by providing that same level of insight in book form.....

"... This book came as a real surprise to me. I'm not a huge basketball stats junkie, but I soon found out quickly that you don't have to be to enjoy this book.

For any fan of NBA basketball this is an essential read. It has detailed commentary on every player in the league, which are not only insightful and informational but
also very interesting to read! ..."

Bradford Doolittle and Pelton capture the thrills and frills of the upcoming pro-basketball season in this soon-to-be classic, Pro Basketball Prospectus 2009-2010. Basketball Prospectus serves as a meaningful guide for both the avid fan and the novice.

Kevin Pelton, a pioneer in the usage of APBR metrics in professional basketball, uses expert analysis to assess the viability for success of each franchise. Alongside the statistics is an upbeat narrative giving the reader an inside-look into the league. The book uses both trends, expert opinion and a keen knowledge of team personnel to forecast success. ..."

Friday Press Clippings:
Playing the Basketball Numbers Game

From Raptors Club.com/ By Fox Sports
Download source here: ' Playing the numbers game '

"... 'I always say there's a gut you have to listen to,' he said. 'It's your gut instinct on draft picks, on trades, on who might play and give you a chance to win that night.' ..."

"... Just as baseball fans long ago began to recognize that traditional statistics were lacking, Basketball fans and insiders alike are on the same path. ..."

"... Triano points to blocked shots and steals as ambiguous statistics and places charges taken and deflections made as more valuable numbers that don't show up in a box score.

The goal for quantitative analysis now is to determine how everything interacts on the floor. As Morey says: "We want to know if a guy was open because of bad defence or was he open because one of our guys set a good screen.". ..."

"... About a third of NBA teams are already heavily invested in quantitative analysis and another third - such as the Raptors - are dabbling, says ESPN.com columnist John Hollinger, who helped popularize the approach for fans. ..."

"... The best known of a crowd of like-minded analysts, his signature breakthrough was PER - or Player Efficiency Rating - a catch-all measure for player performance.

It set the league average at 15 and recognizes LeBron James - his PER of 31.7 in 2008-09 was third best in the past 35 years - as an emerging legend. ..."

"... It's not clear how many of the league's players are paying attention to the shift, but mention that teams of very smart people are trying to figure ways to measure the so-called "little things" and their interest piques. ..."

"... Many of those questions are being raised by Basketball's new stat geeks - such as the two young men with laptops in hand who sat in at the Raptors' practice last week and made their pitch to management later - and sometimes the answers are confusing at first. ..."

Friday Press Clippings:
About the Basketball Analysis and Basketball Numerology

From Yale Daily News By Robert Kruse
Download source here: ' M. Basketball | Analysis: Basketball numerology '

"... To answer this question, the team’s winning percentage of .400 would on the surface indicate that the Elis are slightly below average, with average being winning half the games played. Such an analysis is hampered, though, by the fact that the strength and quality of the team’s opposition highly influences what that team’s record will be. After all, good teams can have bad records by playing many great teams. ..."

"... According to calculations by Joe Lunardi of ESPN, Yale has played the 291st toughest schedule in the nation, meaning that the men’s basketball team has struggled despite playing a fairly easy schedule. At the same time, Harvard stands at 9-6 but has played the 331st toughest schedule, even considering their game against (and win over) No. 24 Boston College. That suggests the Crimson might be weaker then they appear at first glance. ..."

"... Combining a team’s record and strength of schedule into one measure, the NCAA developed the Rating Percentage Index (RPI) in 1981 to rank all basketball teams for the tournament. ..."

"... “In the NBA when all you are doing is playing basketball, statistics are more important,” Braswell said. “In the college game, people are a lot more up and down each game [since] if you have a lot of midterms one week, you can’t get in the gym a lot and your shooting percentage will go down.” ..."

"... “As far as assists and turnovers, the scorekeeper can affect it a lot,” Edwards said. “There are times that our teams go on the road and assists are barely kept. [Overall], I don’t think people should put too much emphasis on turnovers and assists.”

While the sources for such statistics can be dubious, Eli coaches nevertheless prepare their players with advanced scouting reports laden with statistical analyses for each game. ..."

"... But other players admitted that they do follow some statistics closely as a way to measure the team’s or their own individual progress. Guard Chris Andrews ’09 said he follows his assist-to-turnover ratio given his roles in protecting and distributing the ball as a point guard on the team. As a team, he explained the Elis have different goals. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
About the Rule & Statistics of a 3-pointer Attempt & Simultaneous Foul

" ...We have this situation: when player A2 attempts a 3-pointer, after the ball leaves his hands, opponent B1 fouls A1 in the lane and the referee calls it.

What should be the call and the statistician's registration:
A1 foul received ? A2 3-pointer attempt ? A1 or A2 goes to the line ? ..."

Duke inbounded the ball length of the court and Christian Laettner hit the storied shot that is now shown every year at tournament time.
Photograph: rush the court

Commentary:
The basket is good: it counts. Now:

1) if the team B is not in the penalty / bonus, team A is given possession of the ball for a throw in;

eBA Statistical Registration: 3 points made for A2 and Forced Turnover for B2.

2) if the team B is IN the penalty / bonus, A1 goes for the free throw line and not shooter A2;

eBA Statistical Registration: same stats as above and game goes on with free throws.

All the terms in this answer are explained widely at The Global Basketball Encyclopedia and in eBA ONLINE.

Photograph: Nike.com

Happy Birthday Amar'e !

Amar'e Carsares Stoudemire
Position: Forward-Center
Height: 6'10"  ~  Weight: 245 lbs.
Born: November 16, 1982 in Lake Wales, Florida, USA
High School: Cypress Creek in Orlando, Florida
College: University of Memphis
Coaching record: Drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the 1st round (9th pick, 9th overall) of the 2002 NBA draft.

Amar'e Carsares Stoudemire (born November 16, 1982 in Lake Wales, Florida) is an American professional basketball player for the NBA's Phoenix Suns. He is a 6-foot-10-inch (208 cm) and 249-pound (113 kg) power forward/center.

Stoudemire won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 2003, made four appearances in the NBA All-Star Game, made first-team All-NBA Team in 2007, and won Bronze Medal with the United States men's national basketball team at the 2004 Olympic Games.

Stoudemire's first name had previously been listed in the Phoenix Suns media guide as "Amaré" or "Amare", but it was changed to "Amar'e" in October 2008. Stoudemire told NBA.com that his name had always been spelled "Amar'e", but the media had been spelling it incorrectly since he joined the NBA.

Off the court: In November 2008, Stoudemire received the NBA's Community Assist Award, for his work with his Each 1, Teach 1 Foundation, and its efforts to provide safe drinking water in Sierra Leone by funding the building of water wells in impoverished villages. Stoudemire visited the country in Summer 2008, making visits to water well sites and meeting with President Ernest Bai Koroma and the rest of the cabinet.

Sunday's Reflections on Basketball Statistics:
About the Statistics Analysis & Basketball Court Positions

From the point of view of the statistical analysis: how do we define a player's position ? Is it primarily a player's role in the offense ? A player's height ? A player's defensive range in terms of quickness, strength, and height ?
Is it possible to have two centers or point guards on the court, or does one of them become a '2' or '4' ? How significant is the difference between a 2 and a 3?
Which is the importance and the influence of the position in the basketball statistical analysis ?

From the moment that player's position is often left out of most basketball analysis systems, is there in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System the factor position as a parameter of a study ? How necessary are the traditional positions? Have the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System studies or theories presented that reinforce the convention of having a point guard, a second guard, a small forward, a power forward, and a center ?

About the Statistics Analysis & Basketball Court Positions
Image: Sim-Hoops.com

It is absolutely necessary that we begin thinking in terms of roles rather than positions. Our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System describe and classify these roles and works in this terms.

As soon as possible we must trash traditional positional designations — at least with regards to our statistics analysis — and start working on something more important: player roles.

Basketball game developed so much from that time when positions were an early attempt to describe roles.
To refer nowadays to those traditional designations is a pass back. Not open to doubt that every team needs what traditionally is a point guard, a far-seeing, sure-handed player to initiate an offense once the ball has been brought upcourt.

But today, more and more teams plays with players who can't manage other point guard duties but are still used to initiate offense. Therefore, what the teams need is a player who will set up the offense and get the ball to where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.
You can call him a PG, but in terms of statistics analysis you can't forget to recognize the primary existence of roles.

This theme is developed in my first exposition "Statistics & Statisticians" at the Basketball Statistics Registration Course in eBA Clinics.

Friday Press Clippings:
The Greatest Scoring Machines in Pro Basketball History

From 20 Second Timeout By David Friedman
Download source here: ' The Greatest Scoring Machines in Pro Basketball History '

"... When discussing the greatest scorers in pro basketball history it is only natural to look at career scoring average. Once a player scores 10,000 points or participates in 400 regular season games he is eligible to be ranked among the career points per game leaders. The list of career ppg leaders often combines retired veterans with active players in the prime of their careers. ..."

"... It is much more informative to broaden the discussion to include other relevant statistics. The accompanying chart compares 18 of the greatest scorers in pro basketball history at various stages of their careers. This article will focus primarily on three of these players: Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan. ..."

"... Whether or not Jordan passes Kareem in total points or slips behind Wilt in career scoring average, he will be remembered for what he did in his peak years. Jordan averaged 32.6 ppg in his first five seasons (11,263 points in 345 games) and was still at 32.6 ppg after seven seasons (16,596 points in 509 games).

He only dipped slightly to 32.2 ppg after 10 seasons (21,998 points in 684 games, including an 18 game season in 1985-86 due to a broken foot and a 17 game season in 1994-95 after his first comeback). Jordan has bested Chamberlain in two areas: 30-plus ppg seasons (eight to seven) and scoring titles (ten to seven). ..."

"... Julius Erving and Jordan are the only "mid-size" players of these five. Dr. J averaged 28.7 ppg in his first five seasons, all in the ABA. He won three scoring titles, once topping 30 ppg. His career average stood at 26.6 ppg after seven seasons and 26.1 ppg after ten. He finished his career with 30,026 points in 1243 games (24.2 ppg). ..."

"... Several of the great scoring machines sacrificed individual numbers in order to help their teams challenge for championships by becoming more balanced offensively: Wilt, Dr. J, Moses Malone, Oscar Robertson, Adrian Dantley—but no one exemplifies this more than Bob McAdoo, a three time scoring champion who became a sixth man for the Showtime Lakers and played on their 1981-82 and 1984-85 championship teams. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
Reflection about Statistics and Efficiency in Basketball

About efficiency in Basketball: "But is it even possible to say what constitutes efficiency in Basketball? More points in fewer minutes seems the most transparent analogy, but it’s not a terribly useful thing to know.

Obviously, efficiency relates to a player’s production, but a player can “produce” hundred of different things in five minutes of Basketball and we only keep track of that which is easy to count. And if we combine all of those measurements into one index, we have to make ridiculous assumptions like: four rebounds are worth three assists.

What would it mean to compile a team of extremely efficient players?

From what I can tell, it describes a team full of players who are particularly precious at accumulating more “numbers” in fewer possessions above all else. Less obvious strengths, like defensive presence, passing ability, and energy are deemed less important, making for what could be a homogeneous and uninteresting team.

Statistics, Efficiency and Success in Basketball... Florida holds up the trophy !
Photograph: from 'Basketball Notes by Alex'

But this post is not meant to be an attack on John Hollinger, top of ESPN’s NBA writing staff, or 82games.com (who claim not to have discovered the definitive way to evaluate players).

The idea that everything can and should be quantified has led to using efficiency (of the sell and produce more at less cost variety) as the measuring stick for effectiveness.
This idea began in the business world and has bled into other areas, including sports and education. Among entirely too many important people, efficiency is equated with value and utility.

An efficient company or organization creates a cheaper and better product, benefiting company and society simultaneously. Everyone wins, at least from that perspective....." Read the complete post at freedarko.blogspot.com

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
Does the 3 second count continues during a basketball interrupted dribble ?

" ...Does the 3 second count continues during an interrupted dribble ? ..."

1952-1953 ~ Senior Basketball Game Beck School against Central in Beck Gymnasium ...
Photograph: Beck Collegiate

Commentary:
Yes: 3 seconds count continue during an interrupted dribble.
Here is the correction from the Case Book, page 66-67:

Rule 9.7.2: Delete the last three words "or interrupted dribble" in the second to the last sentence of the ruling.

It needs to be charged: rule 9-7-1 says: "when the ball is in control of his/her team...". You DO NOT lose team control during an interrupted dribble, only player control.

All the terms in this answer are explained widely at The Global Basketball Encyclopedia and in eBA ONLINE.

This Week Basketball Book & eBook eBA DVICE !
Basketball on Paper ~ Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis by Dean Oliver

Basketball on Paper:
Rules and Tools
for Performance Analysis
By Dean Oliver

"... I wrote the book under the influence of award-winning books like "Guns, Germs, and Steel," "Good to Great,"
and "Ender's Game."

Now that it's 3 years after Basketball on Paper went to press, a couple years after the description here was written, and a year or more after the book got me a
job in the NBA, I wanted to add an updated description.

I wrote the book in the hopes of presenting a scientific _method_ for approaching basketball.

By "method", I mean that it doesn't present a magical all-encompassing rating for players, but rather a _structure_ for basketball as genetics provided a
structure for understanding life and biology. ...... "

"... The possession-based concept introduced early in the book allows you to evaluate strategy, the chemistry of a team, and, yes, who are better players. It doesn't matter whether it's the NBA, WNBA, college, high school, or the international game - the methods apply and I've applied them. The book focused on the NBA and WNBA because that was where the statistics were most readily available going back more than a year or two. That is changing and I have already seen foreign leagues incorporating my work into their game.

This structure does introduce formulas, nothing more complicated than the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division that I learned through baseball cards when I was 10 years old. For coaches who want to avoid these, I actually recommend reading the last chapter first because it summarizes the conclusions of the previous chapters.

For people interested in player evaluation, the book has numerous lists of player stats, how many wins and losses they contributed, and how they did it. This includes players as far back as Bill Russell, but as recent as Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, and Allen Iverson.

For baseball fans, I should say that Bill James' work on Win Shares in baseball paralleled mine in basketball, though we did take slightly different approaches. Bill has even said of the book, "Excellent writing. There are a lot of math guys who just rush from the numbers to the conclusion. . .they'll tell you that Shaq is a real good player but his team would win a couple more games a year if he could hit a free throw.

Dean is more than that; he's really struggling to understand the actual problem, rather than the statistical after-image of it. I learn a lot by reading him." I am happy to say that experts in statistical evaluation of baseball (like Bill), football (like Aaron Schatz and Ben Alamar of Pro Football Prospectus), and basketball are all communicating about the common goals we have for doing scientific evaluation of team sports, where analogies to business team environments and global politics abound.

I realized as I wrote the book that there were a million projects that I could do from what is in the book. Those projects have come about and grown even before I joined the Seattle Supersonics in October of 2004. Evaluating strategy has grown so much from the basics in this book. Player evaluation, especially as they move from one league to another, has evolved. And, with the experiment of the 2004-05 season, I got to show how the work significantly helps coaching a team.

That season, I joined the Sonics with a fixed roster that was universally picked for last in their division. I worked with the coaches, management, and players to provide a different perspective to their own backgrounds, one that complemented their own expertises. At the end of the season, we won our division, we upset the experts by winning our first round series, and we gave the ultimate NBA champions one of their toughest playoff battles.

I felt that we should have won the championship -- perhaps naive, but also a measure of the belief I had in not only the work in Basketball on Paper, but also in the ability of the staff and players I worked with.

Now that I do work in the NBA and apply new tricks of the trade, I can't really write another book sharing my secrets. But Basketball on Paper contains the framework, the basic insights, and a lot of the numbers for understanding a lot more about the beautiful game."
Dean Oliver

Out of Context: The Use of the Statistics by James R. Beniger

Out of Context:
The Use of the Statistics by James R. Beniger

James R. Beniger, an associate professor at USC's Annenberg School of Communications, said it's better to decide which team is the best on the field -- not through the statistics. "As a statistician, I could find statistics to prove that USC is the best team in the country, and I could just as easily find some to show that another team is," said Beniger, who holds a master's degree in statistics from California.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
About the Need for Basketball Statistics

"I think the need for statistics stems from the fact that the popular US sports are designed for the armchair fan. This probably stems from the sheer size of the country - there aren't local derbys on the same scale as as European football, and fans don't travel to away games.
Statistics Comments I'd suggest that fans who attend US sports do so thanks to the support of those watching on TV...... .

But things are changing, and football is gaining in popularity. I don't think that the lack of statistics will be a barrier, since the US appetite for celebrity is far greater.......

The statistics is merely consequence of the cultural factors that presents the sport to an audience understands the facts but not the emotion.......

( from a discussion developed in "The Filter" about "The Beautiful Game" )

Basketball Statistics Methods & Formulas:
Similarity Scores and The MVP IBM - IBM Watson Research Center Formula

Similarity Scores are a method of comparing basketball players to other players, with the intent of discovering who the single most similar historical player is to a certain player.
This method have been used to determine career paths and projected statistics for players. The logic behind this line of thought is simple: players often follow similar career trajectories to their most similar players, so the historical similar players' performance in years after the active player's current age should be a good predictor of that active player's future production.
Similarity scores are also used extensively in many statistical forecasting programs but is not used by the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.

MVP IBM - IBM Watson Research Center is one of the newest proposals in the area of the formulas to evaluate the efficiency and productivity at Basketball. It was presented by the IBM Watson Research Center together with the Technologies Commission of the NBA. This coefficient - MVPIBM - is calculated through the following equation:

MVP IBM = [ Points Made + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks -
( Field shots Made + Personal Fouls + Turnovers ) + ( Team Wins x 10 ) ] x 250 /
[ ( Points Made + Rebounds + Assists + Turnovers + Blocks -
( Field Shots made + Personal Fouls + Turnovers ) ]

This formula, with another fields formulas, are integrated in the 2nd. exposition of the Basketball Statistics Registration eBA Course: "Statistics Formulas Revision", at eBA CLINICS ONLINE.

October Case Study Conclusion in our Basketball Statistician's Digest:

A Missed Shot and Simultaneous Fouls... Case Study

"... A missed shot comes off the rim and bounces along the floor. A2 is in a position to pick up the ball when A3 fouls B3...
• (a) before A2 can touch the ball,
• (b) as A2 touches the ball or
• (c) after A2 gains control of the ball...

What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( forced, unforced, neutral, etc...) ? ..."

Jorge Garbajosa #15 of Spain chases down a loose ball against Rimantas Kaukenas #4 of Lithuania during a men's semifinal baketball game at the Wukesong Indoor Stadium on Day 14 of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on August 22, 2008 in Beijing, China....
A Loose Ball in a Photograph from Zimbio.com

Conclusion:
In (a), credit Team B with a dead-ball TEAM rebound and register the continuation of the play.

In (c), credit A2 with an individual UNDISPUTED rebound and charge A3 with a UNFORCED turnover in addition of the NEGATIVE foul made by A3 and the POSITIVE foul received by B3.

In (b), the actions of the officials will determine the ruling.
If A2 had gained control, then the foul by A3 will be a player-control NEGATIVE foul and register a POSITIVE foul received by B3.
In this case, credit A2 with an individual UNDISPUTED rebound and charge A3 with an UNFORCED turnover.

If A2 had not gained control, then the foul by A3 will not be a player-control foul, therefore register a NEUTRAL foul made by A3, a POSITIVE foul received by B3 and credit Team B with a dead-ball TEAM rebound.

This Case Study was presented as every first day of each month, on September 1st., 2009 in our eBA Portal : were sent 723 answers, and 18 totally right, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.

A Six Month Free eBA Full Member Registration
was awarded to those who submitted the correct answers !
