NBA Coaches Playbook: Mike Krzyzewski and Rick Pitino attest to the benefits college basketball coaches glean from the pro level. Now college and high school coaches can get advice from top NBA coaches in the NBA Coaches Association’s upcoming NBA Coaches Playbook. The playbook, the first basketball coaching book of its kind, offers a collection of proven methods and strategies from the NBA’s elite coaches on maximizing player and team performance. |
“Winning basketball was and still is a matter of fundamentals and details, but you also need a tough attitude in order to reach the top,” says Basketball Hall of Fame
coach Phil Jackson.
In NBA Coaches Playbook, 28 successful coaches offer more than 450 Xs-and-Os diagrams and expertise, including tips from Phil Jackson on the fast break, Tex Winter on the triangle offense, and Pete Carril and Eddie Jordan on the Princeton offense.
Each chapter offers technical teaching points, practice drills, tactical nuances, or game-management tools that provide a coaching edge.
The book’s “special plays” section should be especially popular among coaches seeking the out-of-bounds and last-second plays that work when the game is on the line.

Same Knight, Different Channel In Same Knight, Different Channel, Jack Isenhour takes him at his word. |
Bob Knight’s sentiment was in step with the core value of "there is no substitute for victory" at West Point, where soldiers were being trained to fight and win the next war.
So it came as little surprise following Knight’s 18-8 record in his inaugural 1965-66 season-a season in which the twenty-five-year-old hot-headed coach berated officials,
totaled chairs, and got into his first shouting match with an athletic director-that West Point chose to keep the young Coach Knight on.
What’s a tantrum or two in the name of winning? With that, "Bobby T" was born. Knight’s bad-boy persona-the hair-trigger temper, the acting out, and the defiance-was codified as at least tolerable, if not acceptable, behavior.
Relying on firsthand experiences and interviews with teammates, administrators, and Knight himself, Isenhour traces the pattern of misbehavior established during Knight’s inaugural year at West Point, during his last days at Indiana, and to his reemergence at Texas Tech.
The result is the most even-handed portrait of Knight to date. In a narrative both lively and irreverent, Same Knight, Different Channel demonstrates who Knight is today and shows how he was shaped by his experiences at West Point, ending with a thought-provoking discussion of just what it takes to play, coach, and win in the high-pressure world of college basketball...."
Jack Isenhour an award-winning television journalist, was a seldom-used guard on Bob Knight's first Army basketball (1965-66). His premise is that the Knight we know today--controversial, temperamental, successful--was forged by his tenure at West Point when he became the Cadets' head coach at the ridiculously young age of 25.
The raw material was there: a fierce competitor in high school and college, Knight was the kid skidding around the court diving after loose balls.
When Army coach Tates Locke resigned to take another position, he recommended that his young assistant succeed him. Knight's inherent competitiveness flourished at West Point during the Vietnam era. He developed a style--stifling defense, patient offense--that maximized the skills of players who were not big and not heavily recruited.
Filled with great anecdotes from former players and Isenhour's self-deprecating replays of his time--yesterday and today--with Knight, this is a compelling look at the early career of a man who will soon become the winningest college coach in history.

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
The Pitfalls of Statistical Analysis: Basketball vs. Baseball
From Raptors HQ
Download source here: ' The Pitfalls of Statistical Analysis: Basketball vs. Baseball '
"... Statistics can lie. Which statistics we chose to measure and which ones we choose to ignore will often paint us a picture that can be detrimental to our analysis. It is always preferable to have a larger sample size and more measurements, but it is sometimes unavailable or too time-consuming and cost-prohibitive to do so. ..."
"... Statistics will be used to lie. What we choose to show to people from available statistics becomes important as people have an inherit trust in numbers. How we present the numbers also affects how people perceive a situation. ..."
"... In baseball, we have a sport that is clearly defined between offensive and defensive categories. What one player does when he is out in the field or at bat seldom affects the other. A baseball player's role is well defined.
When you are hitting the ball, you can measure certain kinds of statistics that only pertain towards hitting the ball and when you're running the bases, there's another set of statistics that only measure your effectiveness at running the bases.
In fact, it can be argued that baseball is a team sport that relies on the individual performances of players rather than players all working together at the same time, all the time. ..."
"... In contrast, basketball is a sport that is always reliant on the other players on the court who are with you at the same time.
On offense, having a clear lane to the hoop for an easy basket relies on your 3 point threats drawing their defenders out to the perimeter, a perfect pick set by your big man, and a partial clear out under the basket so your wing can have room to score.
Each player has a part to play at the same time in the possession, but in the stats registered in NBA.com, we only ever concentrate on the points scored or the assist made. ..."
"... Assists: They're defined as a pass that directly leads to a basket, but they're often left to the scorekeeper's subjective discretion.
Unlike assists in hockey, assists in basketball are hard to cover because they happen quickly and with around 100 combined shots taken in an NBA game, there is little time to go back and correct errors .
Add to the fact that there have been reports of inflated stats and it all equals to some questionable numbers. Too often though, it's a series of passes that leads to a basket while only the final pass that's scored. ..."
"... Finally, Fouls Incurred would be another good measure of a player's prowess to enter the paint and draw fouls. Yes, foul shots already do some of the work, but to have an accurate breakdown that measures how many fouls a player has drawn from their opponent would give a more accurate picture.
For example, if one looks at free throws attempted, it doesn't tell which resulted in two foul shots and which resulted in mere penalties. Foul shots also do not measure fouls drawn in a non-shooting situation. The inclusion of this statistic may encourage more players to attack and be more aggressive...."

Coaches Digest: Why basketball is a 5 on 5 sport ?
Why basketball is a 5 on 5 sport ?
Why we never play just 4 on 4 game or 6 on 6 ? Why it's an impair sport ?
Actually, the first game wasn't 5 on 5. When Dr. Naismith invented the game, the entire court was filled.
There are stories of games with as many as 60 people playing at the same time. The dribble did not exist.
Basketball is a game that slowly evolved into its present form. In the beginning, it more closely resembled indoor soccer - except that it was played by passing with the hands instead of feet.
Women originally played 6 on 6 with with the floor divided in three parts. There were two guards, two forwards and two centers. Guards never shot in the game, and the forwards, could dribble only twice. However, the defense couldn't swipe at the ball unless it was in the lane.
You can see how the position names we use today are based on that early configuration.
Crazy rules, but it produced some outstanding basketball. For more details, go to Granny Basketball where this style is still played today.
Dr. Naismith did not like the eventual 5 on 5 format- he felt it was too much sprinting for individuals and worried that the physical strain was more than a player could handle without serious physical repercussions.

Basketball Statistician's Digest: The Statistical Profile of a Title Team
From 20 Second Timeout By David Friedman
Download source here: ' The Statistical Profile of a Title Team '
"... What is the statistical profile of an NBA championship team? Hall of Famer Hubie Brown has always emphasized the importance of point differential. Hank Egan told me that the first statistic he looks at is defensive field goal percentage. An examination of the statistics of NBA championship teams since 1990 shows that these two categories are indeed strong indicators that a team will be successful. ..."
"... It is often said that defense wins championships and the strong rankings of recent championship teams in the category of defensive field goal percentage certainly lends credence to that thought. Still, the object of the game is ultimately to put the ball in the basket, so a championship team must be able to generate at least some offense. In fact, championship teams tend to rank toward the top of the league in scoring. ..."
"... Another pattern that is readily evident with even a cursory glance at the accompanying chart is that scoring has plummeted in the NBA, from 107.0 ppg in 1990 to a low of 91.6 ppg in the lockout shortened 1999 season.
As of 2006-07, recent rules changes that were intended to increase scoring still had not boosted that number back to triple digits. Yet, despite this obvious trend, the relative relationship between the champion’s scoring and that of the rest of the league has not changed much. ..."
"... What about rebounding? That is not included in the accompanying chart because how a team ranks in total rebounds largely correlates with the pace at which that team plays (i.e., how many missed shots are available to be rebounded).
The significant thing to note is that every one of these champions outrebounded their opponents by at least 1.6 rpg except for the two Houston teams and the 2002 Lakers. That Lakers squad outrebounded their opponents by a little more than 1 rpg, while both Houston teams were outrebounded by their opponents..."
"... Perhaps the "strangest" of these champions is the 1993 Chicago Bulls, a team that ranked 11th in field goal percentage, 15th in defensive field goal percentage, 15th in scoring and is one of only six champions in the past 18 years to score fewer points per game than the league average.
That Bulls team had a couple things in its favor, though: a good point differential (fourth best in the league) -- and a guy named Michael Jordan, who had a certain ability to do special things at the end of close games..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: The Cost of Throwing Away Free Throws
From The Wages of Wins Journal By John Branch
Download source here: ' The Cost of Throwing Away Free Throws '
"... If we look at the NBA we can see evidence for why coaches should ignore free throw shooting. From 1977-78 to 2007-08 the correlation between a team’s free throw percentage and team winning percentage is only 0.18. In other words, free throw percentage explains only 3% of team wins [correlation is r, explanatory power is r2]. Given these numbers it’s clear that teams should just ignore free throw percentage. ..."
"... Perhaps the most famous poor performer at the line is Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq entered the league in 1992-93. Across the next 16 seasons (ending with the 2007-08 campaign), O’Neal posted a 0.307 WP48. Certainly this is an excellent mark (average is 0.100). But relative to the following sample of all-time greats, Shaq comes up a bit short: ..."
"... Of course, hitting free throws – by themselves – are not enough to win games. You also have to efficiently shoot from the field, rebound, create turnovers, and avoid turnovers. So coaches do have to focus on more than free throws. But if it’s true that coaches can change free throw percentage (and I am not sure this is the case), then they are throwing away points by not spending more time on this issue. ..."
"... That gives me hope. I have been under the false assumption that divulging too much data evens out the competition to the point that if you publicly develop a superior method you would help the competition too much. Instead it seems that people are too stubborn. That's a good thing for someone like me. I hope Berri does not respond to anything Cuban says.
Though if I were in his position I might point out that if Cuban’s coach had “listened” to win score in 2007 then they would not have sat one of their most productive players(Eric Dampier) for a series against a lesser opponent and lost in the first round when they were one of the best teams of all time. But that's just me. ..."
"... Mr. Berri writes about a lot of players being under or overrated. Inevitably overrated player is put in a situation where his “worth” must be proven and fails ( cough Iverson cough Kobe ). Inevitably underrated player gets a chance to prove his worth and succeeds ( cough Billups cough Garnett ). ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: August Case Study Conclusion
"... The player A4, in the act of shooting a 3 pointer, he releases the ball and the player B6 punches him with closed hand in his face, the ref whistles and simultaneously sounds the game clock buzzer to indicates the end of the game and the ball goes into the basket, the ref ratify the basket and disqualifies B6, informing about all the events to the game officials .
The question is how many additional free throws the player A4 will shot, one or two free throws ?
What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System? ..."

Conclusion:
Commentary=
According to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System when we have a situation of any foul continued by a goal we are speaking about an additional free throw, that's means, the player victim of the flagrant foul will throw a free throw and the game is over ( or goes into an eventual over time ); in this example the player made three points and a possible additional point more.
eBA Statistical Registration=
A4, a field goal made for three points + a received foul + a free throw attempt.
B6, a Disqualifying foul made.
There is no registering of a turnover , because there is no another possession in this case.
This Case Study was presented on August 2, 2009 in our eBA Portal: were sent 546 answers, and 9 totally right, that's means including all the options.
