Basketball Statistician's Digest:
Analysis of how coaches, scouts and the media reward statistical production
and the statistical importance of non-statistical evaluations
From Basketball Statistics.com By Scott Sereday
Download source here: ' Analysis of how coaches, scouts and the media reward statistical production and the statistical importance of non-statistical evaluations '
"... The 2008-2009 NBA season preview for ESPN the Magazine compared analysis of players, coaches, general managers, statheads and fans as each defended why they “know best.” This gave me the idea of attempting to use some of these sources to “fill in the gaps” that statistics don’t account for. As statistical measurements and analysis progress, these gaps can be explained in a more unbiased form. ..."
"... In my first model I used the independent variables ... with a couple modifications. I eliminated several insignificant variables and used statistics per 100 possessions rather than per 40 minutes. I also didn’t use minutes per game as a variable since it can be viewed as a product of how coaches see the game. Finally, I didn’t weigh by player minutes, player possessions or any clutch/garbage aspects. ..."
"... a team is expected to score more points per 100 offensive possessions at a rate defined by the applicable (estimated) coefficient. For example, suppose that Player A and his Team A are identical to Player B and his Team B in every way except that Player A accumulates one more offensive rebound per 100 offensive possessions than Player B. This model assumes that when Player A is on the floor, Team A is expected to score 0.778 points more per 100 possessions then Team B is expected to score when Player B is on the floor. ..."
"... Another observation is that an assist is much more valuable on close shots and an assisted shot is much more valuable if it is from long range. This is likely explained by the increased scoring expectation obtained from making an assist type pass to a 3 point shooter versus a lay up shooter.
A pass to a direct lay up attempt greatly improves scoring chances over the expectation before that pass was completed. However, a pass directly leading to a 3 point shot only moderately increases scoring expectations, so much of the weight should be attributed to the 3 point scorer. Interestingly, the coefficient for an unassisted 3 pointer actually exceeds 3 points. ..."
"... This model indicates that, given a similar result, the taller a player is, the more his offensive involvement can help his team. Notice that this variable decreases the “value” attributed to offensive rebounds, while it increases the “impact” of steals and turnovers, among others.
This is the result of the correlation between these statistics and height (and possibly shot frequency). When I compared the impact of the versatility index, I noticed the addition of this statistic did not have any real impact on unassisted 2 and 3 point jump shots made and turnovers. It also had little impact on free throws, missed shots and steals. ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: The Illegal Defense in the NBA
Illegal Defense: A rather nebulous NBA rule that was called irregularly. It's designed to prevent the use of the zone defense, today legal in the NBA, it was more like a 3-second violation for the defense, in which no defender can stay in the lane for more than, well, 3 seconds. If you were on defense and were not aggressively guarding someone, you could not spend more than 3 seconds in the key at a time.
The term Illegal Defense has replaced Zone Defense in NBA usage. The rule now in place, supported by guidelines, defines approved coverage by defensive players and teams. Violations of these rules and guidelines will be noted as Illegal Defense.
a. Illegal defenses which violate the rules and accepted guidelines set forth are not permitted in the NBA.
b. When the offensive team is in its backcourt with the ball, no illegal defense violation may occur.
The illegal defense guidelines needed to be eliminated because they have become problematic. They are problematic for our fans, who don't understand the rule.
They are problematic for the officials, who admittedly have had difficulty administering the rule. And finally, the teams have used the guidelines in a way that produces isolation basketball. Teams identify areas on the floor that they can use to their advantage in a given offensive matchup and this produces a real sameness of play amongst a lot of the teams. With isolation Basketball, a lot of NBA teams began standing around.
There is little player movement, there is little ball movement, and there is a decreasing amount of fastbreak opportunities. These developments began with the misuse of the illegal defense guidelines and therefore they needed to be eliminated. By eliminating them, the desired result is to get a game that once again is based on passing, cutting, player movement, and ball movement. A game that hopefully produces fastbreak opportunities because that is the way our game should be played.

This Week Basketball DVD eBA DVICE:

The Complete Guide to Man-to-Man Defense
By Bob Knight
Step onto the court with coaching legend Bob Knight, former head coach at Texas Tech and Indiana University, as he teaches you everything you need to know about playing man-to-man defense. In this two-disc set, you will see Coach Knight, over 900 career wins and 3X National Championship Coach, as you've never seen him before as he personally demonstrates how to get your team down on the floor and ready to stop your opponent.
This style of defense will create a stifling, dominating and mentally fatiguing experience for your opponent. Working with defenders on the ballside, Knight, Five Final 4 appearances and 4X National Coach of the Year, emphasizes not just denying the ball, but creating an atmosphere of denial throughout the entire offensive possession.
Progressing into help-side defense, Knight, 1984 US Men's Olympic Coach (Gold Medal), demonstrates how critical it is to play defense as a team. He stresses the importance of blocking out and demonstrates how to execute a proper block out. Knight gives you a glimpse into his unique style of defensive conversion with his on-court teaching and demonstrations.
He also includes footage of a practice and two full games to study these techniques in action. Throughout the video, Knight provides coaching gems you will not find anywhere else. Teach your team the same defensive principles that propelled Bob Knight to over 900 wins and three national titles.

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
Game Theory: When it comes to athletic prowess, don’t believe your eyes.
From The New Yorker By Malcolm Gladwell
Download source here: ' Game Theory ~ When it comes to athletic prowess, don’t believe your eyes. '
"... But how do we know that we’re watching a great player? That’s an easier question to answer when it comes to, say, golf or tennis, where players compete against one another, under similar circumstances, week after week. Nobody would dispute that Roger Federer is the world’s best tennis player.
Baseball is a little more complicated, since it’s a team sport. Still, because the game consists of a sequence of discrete, ritualized encounters between pitcher and hitter, it lends itself to statistical rankings and analysis. Most tasks that professionals perform, though, are surprisingly hard to evaluate. ..."
"... Basketball presents many of the same kinds of problems. The fact that Allen Iverson has been one of the league’s most prolific scorers over the past decade, for instance, could mean that he is a brilliant player.
It could mean that he’s selfish and takes shots rather than passing the ball to his teammates. It could mean that he plays for a team that races up and down the court and plays so quickly that he has the opportunity to take many more shots than he would on a team that plays more deliberately. ..."

"... In “The Wages of Wins” (Stanford; $29.95), the economists David J. Berri, Martin B. Schmidt, and Stacey L. Brook set out to solve the Iverson problem.
Weighing the relative value of fouls, rebounds, shots taken, turnovers, and the like, they’ve created an algorithm that, they argue, comes closer than any previous statistical measure to capturing the true value of a basketball player.
The algorithm yields what they call a Win Score, because it expresses a player’s worth as the number of wins that his contributions bring to his team. According to their analysis,..."
"... If a rookie increases his scoring by ten per cent—regardless of how efficiently he scores those points—the number of votes he’ll get will increase by twenty-three per cent. If he increases his rebounds by ten per cent, the number of votes he’ll get will increase by six per cent.
Every other factor, like turnovers, steals, assists, blocked shots, and personal fouls—factors that can have a significant influence on the outcome of a game—seemed to bear no statistical relationship to judgments of merit at all. It’s not even the case that high scorers help their team by drawing more fans. As the authors point out, that’s only true on the road. ..."
"... We become dance critics, blind to Iverson’s dismal shooting percentage and his excessive turnovers, blind to the reality that the Philadelphia 76ers would be better off without him.
“One can play basketball,” the authors conclude. “One can watch basketball. One can both play and watch basketball for a thousand years. If you do not systematically track what the players do, and then uncover the statistical relationship between these actions and wins, you will never know why teams win and why they lose.” ..."

Lies, Damn Lies & Statistics: Can John Hollinger Be Trusted?
From Pacman Jonesin By Drew Decker
Download source here: ' Lies, Damn Lies & Statistics: Can John Hollinger Be Trusted? '
"... I’m going to break from the regular format this afternoon and briefly wade into the shark-infested waters of statistical analysis. Yes, I know that only fervent members of PETA are more rabid than stat geeks but it’s a risk I’m willing to take. ..."
"... My biggest gripe with statistics concerns the sport of basketball. Wunderkind GM Daryl Morey can seemingly do no wrong in the eyes of all but the most casual NBA observer.
John Hollinger, ESPN’s resident mad scientist, and his beloved PER (Player Efficiency Rating) is considered to be an expert in statistical analysis. My question is why? ..."
"... Now, I love Carly Landry as a player. His soft touch around the basket, work ethic and ability to come up with offensive rebounds (and loose balls) are incredibly valuable attributes. However, at that time no sane person could argue that Landry was even one of the top 100 players in the NBA. Hollinger stuck to his guns though…and his formula. What, pray tell, is the magical PER formula? Glad you asked…here you go: ..."
"... Back on July 18th I started reading an interesting blog post about the inefficiencies of basketball stats…and just finished it a few minutes ago. The word long doesn’t do the post justice.
That said, it was an insightful article that delved into a number of carefully thought out statistics/methods to better measure a player’s true impact. Unfortunately, I don’t think any of them answered the most important questions:
1) Can a guy play and
2) Does he make his teammates better? ..."
"... Data manipulation isn’t a viable alternative as far as I’m concerned. Sharks be damned. I’m going to come out and say it: NBA basketball isn’t conducive to statistical analysis.
Just remember this post six months from now when Hollinger is extolling the virtues of Trevor Ariza and telling you that he’s the best player in the league. He’s not and it isn’t even close. ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: July Case Study Conclusion
"... Team A has the ball in bounds. A1 double dribbles and the official indicates the violation.
Before any player from Team B is handed the ball, Team B's Coach is called a technical foul for some reason, let's say an illegal player's change .
What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System? ..."

eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
Team A will be awarded two free throws for an indirect technical, so we register:
1.- charge A1 with a turnover ( forced or unforced: see 2.- );
2.- register a Team steal in favour of Team B: if a close defense of a player of Team B caused the double dribble , this player is awarded with a Forced Steal ) and the A1's TO will be forced );
3.- charge Team B with a Team Turnover in the category 'technical foul against bench or Coach';
4.- register a Team Steal in favour of Team A, which give the possession of the awarded free throws.
This Case Study was presented on July 7, 2009 in our eBA Portal: were sent 1.129 answers, and 89 totally right, that's means including the four registrations.

The Last Season: Jackson’s chronicle of his final season as the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers moves as crisply as a well-executed fast break. Under his direction, the Lakers won three NBA titles, but failed to reach the championship round in 2003. Determined to make another run at the finals in the 2003–2004 season, the Lakers added Hall of Fame players Karl Malone and Gary Payton to a team that already featured superstars Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. |
But instead of producing another ring, the Lakers were crushed in the finals by the Detroit Pistons.
That the Lakers even reached the last round of the playoffs was a feat given the turmoil that surrounded the team (involving the animosity between Shaq and Bryant, and Bryant’s rape charge).
Phil Jackson briefly critiques the Lakers’ biggest games of the regular season and analyzes each playoff performance, providing fresh insight without boring readers with
play-by-play accounts.
He peppers the narrative with pungent observations of his stars—and it’s no surprise that he saves his sharpest criticisms for Bryant. While Shaq could be difficult to deal with, Jackson contends, he was ultimately a team player.
And although Shaq and Bryant reached a truce in the season’s final months, Jackson sees Bryant as the epitome of today’s selfish player, a "callous gun for hire."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: What I’ve Learned Over the Past Year
From Basketball Geek By Ryan J. Parker
Download source here: ' What I’ve Learned Over the Past Year '
"... The rough outline of a theoretical model for the probability of winning a basketball game at the team, unit, and individual level gave me a lot to think about in terms of how a team comes together to score points. ..."
"... Adjusted plus/minus is something that took me a long time to fully wrap my head around. My naive points added contribution helped me figure it out.
My modeling skills have come a long way since then, but at that time working with things like grouped data and the like were not second nature to me, but now they are.
I think we can throw points added in the trash, but it was an important step in the direction of figuring out adjusted plus/minus. ..."
"... Basketball on Paper’s skill curves are an informative look at how a player’s efficiency relates to their role in the offense, and you too can create them yourself (even though the exact way Dean created the curves is still locked away in his vault). ..."
"... My post on referee efficiency ratings turned out to be one of the best learning experiences all year. Refs are always a touchy subject, and I didn’t provide evidence to make some of the statements I made. As one reader pointed out, referee stuff is “very hard to do right”.
He’s right, and the discussion that followed based on this post was very informative.
I feel that I’ve yet to acquire the tools needed to do a ref analysis real justice, so I’ve left it alone for now. ..."
"... While working on a presentation for an upcoming talk about sports rating, I realized that I’ve yet to really try to predict anything. When we talk about why one model might be better than another, one aspect has to do with predictive capabilities. ..."

Dancing Basketball: Michael Jackson & Michael Jordan in 'Jam'
"Jam" is a song by Michael Jackson from his 1991 Dangerous album. The single was re-released in 2006 as part of Jackson's Visionary: The Video Singles collection.
"Jam" is a mix of aggressive or hard funk, dance and rap, or funk hip hop. The bridge features a rap performed by Heavy D (of the group Heavy D & the Boyz).
The music video of the song featured NBA legend Michael Jordan (the other "MJ").
The song was also featured on the Chicago Bulls'—Jordan's team at that time—1992 NBA Championship video "Untouchabulls". The song was used as the opening number on Jackson's Dangerous World Tour.
The song re-entered the UK charts in 2006, reaching number 22.
The music video for "Jam" takes place within an indoor basketball court, where Jackson teaches basketball legend Michael Jordan how to dance, and in return, Jordan teaches Jackson how to play basketball.
Special effects have Jackson throwing a basketball from a window and scoring in the hoop at the opposite end, as well as Jackson scoring by tossing the ball behind him and kicking the ball into the hoop with his heel.
This extended versions of the video include Jackson teaching Jordan how to do the physically complicated moonwalk dance technique.
The rap duo Kris Kross makes a cameo appearance, as does Heavy D (who performs a rap during the bridge).

Anthology of Statistics in Sports The book by Jim Albert, Jay Bennett, and James J. Cochran Anthology of Statistics in Sports, contains 36 articles which are organized, along with eight introductory articles, in one volume with six parts, each on a different sport or theme: football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, statistical methodologies and multiple sports. |
Each part includes a short introductory article followed by anywhere from three to nine articles.
Edited with newly written material from the editors and other notable contributors which introduces each section of the book, and a chapter with suggestions on using the articles in the classroom is included.
In the title of Chapter 19, Patrick D. Larkey, Richard A. Smith, and Joseph B. Kadane proclaim that "It's Okay to Believe in the 'Hot Hand'." meanwhile Amos Tversky and Thomas Gilovich declare an opposing view in Chapter 21, "The Cold Facts about the 'Hot Hand' in Basketball."
Robert Hooke takes a philosophical approach in Chapter 31, "Basketball, Baseball, and the Null Hypothesis," to speculate on why statisticians such as Tversky and Gilovich don't observe the "hot hand" phenomenon even though intuition and experience shout that it must exist.
