eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology: Parameter

eBA Encyclopedia Statistics Terminology
In mathematics, statistics, and the mathematical sciences, parameters are quantities that define certain characteristics of systems or functions.

When evaluating the function over a domain or determining the response of the system over a period of time, the independent variables are modulated, while the parameters are held constant.
The function or system may then be reevaluated or reprocessed with different parameters, to give a function or system with different behavior.

statistical parameter

Loosely speaking, then, parameters are constants in a narrow context but are variables in a larger context.

Moreover, whether a quantity is a parameter or a variable is generally determined by its role in a particular system or function, rather than by anything intrinsic to the quantity.

In non-technical contexts or in jargon, parameter may also simply be a synonym for criterion.

Read More more details about this definition and another statistical terms at our new Statistics Terminology Glossary.

Pivotal Basketball 'No Moves Needed' NEW TRAININIG COURSE by Christian Mueller

Pivotal Basketball 'No Moves Needed' by Christian Mueller
Basketball Training Course

About this Course
"... The biggest difference between a Mid-Major college program and High-Major is the size of the bigs. There are many more solid guards across the country but finding skilled post players is a difficult challenge all the smaller programs must overcome.

Isn't that the challenge you face at your high school? Few college coaches have been able to overcome the challenge as successfully as Coach Mueller. He was able to take undersized, lower ability post players and turn them into All-Conference players not once or twice, but 5 times!

Each of these young women utilized the Pivotal knowledge and skills necessary to gain the best scoring position possible, increase scoring average significantly, get to the foul line more often, and shoot a higher field goal percentage. This instructional course will help you: ..."

the full review, watch the full live footage and book this course!

"... Mueller’s specialty is coaching post play. In his first four years coaching in college, five of his post players were recognized as 1st-Team All-Conference. Two signed professional contracts to play overseas. One was an honorable mention All-American. And still another finished her career ranked 18th all-time in career FG percentage. ..."

Basketball coaches: do you want more high percentage shots and increased trips to the foul line? No Moves Needed is a basketball coaching video designed specifically for post players.
Learn how to give your post players the pivotal skills and knowledge they need for success. What’s unique about our methods is that they’ve been retooled to fit the women’s basketball game.

Coach Mueller will take you through the entire teaching progression he’s used to consistently get his teams to have the best post play in the various conferences in which he’s coached.
The beauty of the Pivotal method is that it teaches post players to create easy scoring opportunities on the fly amid whatever offense you’re running. The defense is always wrong and with the Pivotal method you’ll finally be able to make them pay!

About the Most Helpful Scorebook Stats before Going into the Locker Room ...!
and Basketball Actuality News Video in our Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Most Helpful Basketball Scorebook Stats before Going into the Locker Room ...!

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
Which are the most helpful scorebook stats, for example before going into the locker room at half time, according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System,
and why ?

Logically, the best and first indicator of the winner is to be sure that the team that has the most points is my proper team..., and only after that, I see the most helpful
scorebook stats:

- defensive touches tracked and shots inside the paint... ( how aggressive are we playing ? );

- number of fouls called on each team... ( who shoots the most free throws ? );

- rebounds... ( are our rebounds at 40+ / 50+ per game and we own the boards ? );

- turnovers, steals... ( are the immediate gratification you are looking for in a game...);

- the shot chart for both teams by quarter ( are we shooting to many jumpers and not attacking the rim ? );

- the shots by 4, 8, 16, 20 & 24 seconds report ( is this game pace our game pace? );

the Most Helpful Basketball Scorebook Stats
The Most Helpful Basketball Scorebook Stats to Discuss into the Locker Room
in a Photograph by Christopher Dabe / BE

- missed layups... ( all the other problems will get over that as soon as players start making layups !);

- deflections... ( are we getting good pressure in the passing lanes ? );

- turnover/assist ratio for players and turnovers/steals ratio for the team ( more assists and steals, OK ? );

- OER (offensive efficiency rating)= total points scored divided by total possessions;

- DER (defensive efficiency rating)= total points allowed divided by total possessions;

- these last two stats take the tempo of the game out of the equation and give you a true sense of how effective you are at scoring and stopping the other team.

In my opinion, everything else is post-game analysis as proposed in my eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.

Basketball Statistics Questions: Basketball Full Season Per Minute Statistics don't Round

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions:
Basketball Full Season Per Minute Statistics don't Round

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
"... When a player is on the floor for 3 minutes and 31 seconds, the official boxscore enumerate it as 4 minutes.

How the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book tracks the influential impact on the per-minute numbers when multiplied throughout the whole season have those lost 30 seconds ? ..."

First of all, there is an open topic about "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board where I'll continue the discussion. But after going there, here you have some thoughts about:

One or some short term data analysis will be determined by random chance. We have studied this issue at the eBA Clinics Chats, and reached to the conclusion that the full season stats don't round game by game, so it's a reasonably exact parameter.

The median for Kobe's shots per minute this season is 0.7. (As always, we're factoring in free throw trips.) In fact, when Kobe shoots more 0.7 shots per minute in a game, the Lakers' offense is slightly better than when he shoots less than 0.7 shots per minute.<br />
There's more data to this effect. It's true that in the aggregate the Lakers have performed better offensively when Kobe is not on the floor, by about five points per 100 possessions. But raw on-off data is extremely noisy, as it doesn't at all account for the other nine players on the court or those replacing the players in question. That's why analytic types much prefer adjusted plus-minus. The best current public iteration for that is ESPN's Real Plus-Minus. In that measure, Kobe rates at +1.47 on offense. <br />

It is assumed that throughout a full season there are as many round-downs as round-ups which would take out significant error or bias by amount of time played but there might be a bit of noise in outlying player game logs.

The discussion continues in the topic: "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board.

All the terms in this answer are explained widely at The eBA Basketball System Book and in eBA Clinic ONLINE.

Reflexions on Basetball Statistics: The Basketball Defensive Rebound Efficiency

Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Some Reflexions about the Basketball Defensive Rebound Efficiency

basketball 24 Seconds Statistics
"... Talking about turnovers, for example, you might hear someone say, "Our team perpetrated 18 turnovers. That's not very good."

It might not be, but you'd have to know more about the way the game was played to reach that conclusion. 18 turnovers against a slow-down team would be awful. 18 turnovers against  a quick-pace squad would be accomplishable. ..."

"... There's a stat called 'defensive rebound efficiency' that is  used in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System -- it measures the amount of defensive rebounds taken down from missed shots.

Some Reflexions about the Basketball Defensive Rebound Efficiency
Photograph: The LLaBB

There's a similar idea we apply in eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System as 'offensive rebound efficiency', which simply measures the amount of available offensive rebounds that a team gather.

One area where that stat breaks down, however, is that it's hard to take free throws into account just by looking at the box score because there's no way to know which missed shots could result in an offensive rebound.

This is Kawhi Leonard’s defensive shot chart for the 2013-14 season. Think of it as the inverse of a conventional shot chart: It reflects the shooting behavior of players when Paul was defending them. The sizes of the symbols on the chart correspond to shot frequency; the color of the symbols represents shot efficiency. These defensive shot charts do a good job of showing the relevance of individual defenders. Players like Leonard reduce the effectiveness of whoever they’re guarding. Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Points per Field Goal Attempt Formula: Concept & Application

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Points per Field Goal Attempt Formula: Concept & Application

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
In order to measure how strictly correctly a player or team is shooting we need statistics, and if possible a creative analysis of those basketball statistics.

Statisticians most often use the field goal percentage ( FG% ) to do it, but the added bonus of the three-point shot, for instance, isn't reflected in field goal percentage, and the ability to get to the free-throw line (where the points come much easier) is ignored as well.

"Points per Shot Attempt" (PSA): It's a stat designed to reflect the basics of good shooting: getting the greatest number of points from the fewest number of attempts.

this chart provides a useful baseline that we can use to evaluate individual shooting performances. By overlaying players’ shot constellations, we can estimate the expected total number of points that an average NBA shooter would produce, based on where he took his shots; then we can compare a particular player’s actual yield against it. Points per shot attempt is simply points divided by shot attempts . Figuring shot attempts is like this: Add field goal attempts plus "Up to the Line" (for 2 or 3 free-throws).

In case of analysis of another team and if you can't know how many times the player or the team reached the line, use (0.4 * FTA) instead.

PSA = Points / (Up to the Line + FGA)

Last years NBA league PSA average was something around 1.039 points per shot attempt, so by averaging, by example, 1.133 points per attempt, an average team gains a full point with every ten shots.

PSA is just as handy for rating individual players as it is for teams. Occasionally a player will break into the top ten who shoots nothing but dunks, but mostly it's the long shooters who are at the top of an individual PSA list.

This formula, with another fields formulas, are integrated in the 2nd. exposition of the Basketball Statistics Registration eBA Course: "Statistics Formulas Revision", at eBA ANNUAL CLINICS ONLINE.
