Basketball Statistician's Digest: Keeping Stats ~ Backcourt Violation ?
"... I think this is a Backcourt Violation... But the play goes on... so ? What is the interpretation of the whole play according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."
If and only if this occurred "during the last two minutes of the fourth period and/or any overtime period," this is a legal play, and the correct call (NBA 8.III.e).
From NBA Rule 4 Section VI: Frontcourt/backcourt status is not attained until a player with the ball has established a positive position in either half during a throw-in in the last two minutes of the fourth period and/or any overtime period.
From NBA Rule 8 Section III: During the last two minutes of the fourth period and / or any overtime period, the ball may be passed anywhere (frontcourt or backcourt) on the court.
There was no violation. The referees made the right call.
You can read the Backcourt Rule in the eBA Forums in this message.

Basketball Playoffs Statistical Differences by At the Hive
From At the Hive
Download source here: ' Playoffs Statistical Differences '
"... People have a lot of vague conceptions about the playoffs. It's more physical. More defense is played. Half court offense is far more prevalent than transition offense. It's harder to shoot, since attempts are contested more heavily...
Time to put some numbers on those claims. ..."
"... teams step up their D in the postseason. 2004 produced a stunning rate of defensive efficiency while 2006 seems to have been an aberration. Overall, though, offensive game plans need to be more complex than in the regular season ..."
"... The pace is significantly slowed in the postseason. It's also interesting that slower paced teams have performed very well in the playoffs through the course of the last decade while faster pace teams have tended to fizzle out ..."
"... Field goal defense seems to be the number one component, leading to that decline (especially consider that teams improve turnover rate and rebound rates stay almost constant) ..."
"... There's no real difference in playoff and season turnovers. It seems counter intuitive at first. However, the slower pace could explain some of this, since teams are far more deliberate in how they use their possessions. Thus, turnover rate is one of the few offensive statistics that isn't adversely affected ..."
"... Television and rest= I think the biggest difference in the playoffs is that both players and referees know that every game is televised nationally and watched by many more people. “Superstars” want to impress the new audience, so impressive one-on-one antics get more play. Defenders don’t want to be 'posterized': so they commit more fouls ..."

An Interview With Neil Paine, Basketball-Reference by Eddy Rivera
From Third Quarter Collapse By Neil Paine, Basketball-Reference
Download source here: ' Interview With Neil Paine Part I ' ~ Part II
"... Readers of Third Quarter Collapse should recognize Paine's name, as he was the gentleman that helped create two what if scenarios with former Orlando Magic player, Grant Hill. The first scenario he ran (over at the BBR blog) involved Hill individually and the second scenario he ran (here at 3QC) involved Hill collectively with his former Orlando teammates. In case you haven't been able to read either of the articles, I highly suggest checking them out. They answer a lot of questions for Magic fans, with regards to 'what could have been' had Grant stayed healthy, in his prime, during his tenure with Orlando. ..."
"... he does a ton of dirty work behind the scenes and "assists" me if I ever need a certain database query, and I "finish the play", so to speak, by researching, analyzing, and writing about the data. As far as the main site goes, ..."
"... I think we're always going to tinker with the advanced stats section and add new and better metrics as we find or invent them. That said, I don't think it's necessarily going to include proprietary metrics (like WARP) that people can readily find on great sites like Basketball Prospectus, especially when we already have a similar stat in Win Shares. ..."
"... One thing he did that I liked the most was to connect "pure" adjusted plus/minus (which uses no box score input) to box score numbers, which I felt had a nice application when it came to historical players. Right now we don't know what Larry Bird or Magic Johnson's pure adjusted +/- was, but ..."
"... I think it can definitely be refined by adding additional variables like height, weight, age, and experience, all of which were absent from the initial regression. It's all about finding factors in the traditional stats that better reflect a player's impact on point differential, and I think things like height and experience in particular -- combined with the rest of the player's stat line, of course -- can help shine a light on some of the "hidden" value that isn't captured in the box score. But that's still the major difference between statistical +/- and pure APM: it has to rely on the box score, which, as you know, doesn't count as many actions as we wish it did. ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: If the Some of the Numbers are Bogus
then how "Advanced" are "Advanced Stats"?
From 20 Second Timeout By David Friedman
Download source here: ' "If the Some of the Numbers are Bogus then how "Advanced" are "Advanced Stats"? '
"... Most of the so-called "advanced stats" are based on taking box score numbers--points, shooting percentages, rebounds, assists, steals, blocked shots, turnovers--and assigning particular weights to each category and/or converting per game numbers into per minute numbers that are adjusted for "pace" (one exception to this is plus/minus, which simply tracks the point differential when a player is on the court and compares it to the point differential when he is not on the court). ..."
"... Of course, the reason that "stat gurus" shy away from doing this is that they have no way of calculating a margin for error because they don't have a way to quantify how reliable the boxscore numbers may be, nor do they want to seriously consider the possibility that the weightings that they assign to those numbers may be less than perfect..."
"... many "stat gurus" seem to have thinly veiled agendas pertaining to how the game "should" be played, which kinds of players (guards or big men, rebounders or scorers, "high volume" players who are not "efficient" or "low volume" player who are "efficient," etc.) are most valuable and how competent (or, to be more precise, incompetent) they consider NBA GMs, coaches and scouts to be. ..."
"... Tony Parker's Seven Assists ~ Drew Gooden hook shot, 4:21 1st q: Incorrect; Gooden caught the ball on the wing, faked out a defender who was closing in on him, took two dribbles, turned 3/4 away from another defender and made a jump hook. Gooden created the shot with his one on one skills. ..."
"... I don't think that there is an NBA conspiracy or a New Orleans conspiracy involved with how assists are officially tracked; for whatever reason, scorekeepers are awarding assists more liberally than the rulebook says that they should. This would tend to favor players who are primarily playmakers, but that does not mean that there is a deliberate effort to favor one player in particular. ..."

The False Dichotomy Of Advanced Statistics
From Mouthpiece Blog By Eamonn Brennan
Download source here: ' The False Dichotomy Of Advanced Statistics '
"... Because there is not a person on the face of the planet who both understands the sophisticated analysis of basketball and thinks it’s a fad. It’s here to stay, and the sooner you’ll embrace that reality, the faster you’ll be able to gain useful insight from it. ..."
"... He said he “worried that sometimes you can get too bogged down in the numbers,” and that his strategy for learning about the game was by watching basketball day and night. He said he preferred to record games and watch them on the treadmill, which I would totally do if I didn’t hate treadmills. ..."
"... Teams are getting answers to all kind of questions. Only in the age of the spreadsheet can coaches know, beyond shooting from the hip: Which point guards turn the ball over the most when you trap the pick and roll? Which free agent power forward is the most efficient offensive rebounder from the weak side? Which players score at a vastly lower rate when going left? ..."
"... Some of the people I affectionately call "the stat geeks" have real answers to those kinds of questions. And while the coaches of teams with in-house stat geeks and custom databases might not change their routines quickly, don't you hope they spend the time learning about how the best of these statistics can be implemented? Would you really rather your team make decisions based on box-score statistics? ..."
"... For a sport like basketball, where so much of the game is slippery and infinite, stats will never replace the knowledge — not to mention happiness — you can get from merely watching the game ..."

Conclusion of the Basketball Statistics Case Studies 14
presented on March 1, 2009 in the eBA Portal
"... "... Player A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and is awarded free throws. Due to injury provoked at the contact, player A1 is not able to shoot the free throws:
1) Who determines the replacement shooter for Player 1 ?
2) How the stats-man proceeds the statistical register in this case according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ? ..."

In all rules except NBA, the coach of Team A makes the decision. In the NBA the opposing team can select a player from Team A if the player is injured but not because of an unsportsmanlike act like the foul itself.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration=
A1 is credited with a foul received and the entering player with the free-throws attempts. This dissimilar situation ( a shooting foul received without free-throws attempts, that's means a player possession without end ) must be clarified in the play-by-play report.
