Examining Defense ~ The Defensive Four Factors
From Basketball Geek By Ryan J. Parker
Download source here: ' Examining Defense ~ Defensive Four Factors '
"... The real goal in all of this is to get an idea of how coaching and player ability affect overall defensive efficiency and the individual stats that are collected. Because of this, I will be strictly focusing on each team’s most used lineup. ..."
"... One important assumption in all of this work is the notion that a team’s goal is to minimize their defensive efficiency. A team’s true goal is to maximize their net efficiency (offensive efficiency - defensive efficiency), but we will not be focusing on this for now. ..."
"... By most used, I mean the lineup that was on the court for the most defensive possessions. To make things a little easier, I have chosen to estimate possessions instead of count them. I hope this does not prove to be a mistake, but for the interested, I used the “simple” formula for estimating possessions as defined in ..."
"... Shooting, by no surprise, has been shown to be the most important factor. This factor is often analyzed using effective FG%. I, however, am biased against effective FG%. It is not actually a percentage, and I find it to have no useful mathematical properties (that I’m aware of, at least). Thus I feel compelled to use a shooting statistic that I can make more sense out of. ..."
"... The results from this sample show that, with respect to defensive efficiency, shooting is worth 56%, turnovers 18%, rebounding 7%, and free throws 18%. It’s certainly worth gathering a larger sample to truly put some sort of importance weight on each factor, but for this sample it is at least worth looking at. ..."

Difference Between the Two Halves of the Season
Related to my last Thursday Message:
"... players generally perform better on their home floor, but friendly scorekeepers often inflate their home stats. How the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis controls this situation ? ..."
Home teams may be, typically, better than away teams. Looking at home-away games during the first half of the season, the game trends indicates home teams often outmatch away teams.
This indicates that in the first half of the season, home teams are in a general and inherent manner stronger than away teams, in a relation of 70-75% of winning percentage.
During the second half, this difference related to the home teams is matched and home and away teams winning percentage are equals to the same degree. This reality brings to the conclusion that winning percentage of home teams concurrently goes down during this time.
Why this difference between the two halves of the season ?

"Imagination has a great deal to do with winning."
"Everybody wants to take responsibility when you win, but when you fail, all these fingers are pointing."

This is only the index of the "Steals Charting" chapter from my exposition about 'Steals Analysis' at eBA ONLINE Clinics. Each principle is fully explained and discussed at that exposition throughout concepts, examples and case studies.
"... eBA Rebound Charting Principles:
A - Steals Dispute Situation:
1. Undisputed steals: 1 or more players from the same team are in the proximity of where the ball is stolen.
2. Disputed steals: the same number of players dispute the ball ( 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc.)
3. Steal under favorable conditions : our team has more players disputing for the ball ( 2 vs 1 , etc.)
4. Steal under unfavorable conditions: our team has less players in the dispute ( 1 vs. 2 , etc. ) ..."

1. Stealing from the dribble;
2. Stealing off the pass;
3. Stealing off a post player; ..."
"... D - Steal Analysis:
1. Non-steal forced turnovers: to pressure an offensive player into traveling, a double dribble, a bad pass, or drawing a charge.
2. Steal forced turnovers.

The No-Stats All-Star ~ Statistical Anomaly
From The New York Times Magazine By Michael Lewis
Download source here: ' The No-Stats All-Star ~ Statistical Anomaly '
"... Here we have a basketball mystery: a player is widely regarded inside the N.B.A. as, at best, a replaceable cog in a machine driven by superstars. And yet every team he has ever played on has acquired some magical ability to win. ..."
"... The virus that infected professional baseball in the 1990s, the use of statistics to find new and better ways to value players and strategies, has found its way into every major sport. Not just basketball and football, but also soccer and cricket and rugby and, for all I know, snooker and darts — each one now supports a subculture of smart people who view it not just as a game to be played but as a problem to be solved. Outcomes that seem, after the fact, all but inevitable — of course LeBron James hit that buzzer beater, of course the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl — are instead treated as a set of probabilities, even after the fact. The games are games of odds. ..."
"... Like professional card counters, the modern thinkers want to play the odds as efficiently as they can; but of course to play the odds efficiently they must first know the odds. Hence the new statistics, and the quest to acquire new data, and the intense interest in measuring the impact of every little thing a player does on his team’s chances of winning. In its spirit of inquiry, this subculture inside professional basketball is no different from the subculture inside baseball or football or darts. The difference in basketball is that it happens to be the sport that is most like life. ..."
"... Taking a bad shot when you don’t need to is only the most obvious example. A point guard might selfishly give up an open shot for an assist. You can see it happen every night, when he’s racing down court for an open layup, and instead of taking it, he passes it back to a trailing teammate. The teammate usually finishes with some sensational dunk, but the likelihood of scoring nevertheless declined. “The marginal assist is worth more money to the point guard than the marginal point,” Morey says. Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much. Players love the spectacle of a ball being swatted into the fifth row, and it becomes a matter of personal indifference that the other team still gets the ball back. ..."

"... Why Jason Kidd averaged 9.3 assists at home last year and 7.3 on the road. It's why Ben Wallace averaged 3.0 blocks at home and 1.7 on the road. True, players generally perform better on their home floor, but friendly scorekeepers often inflate their home stats. How the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis controls this situation ? ..."
Most observers of college basketball believe that home teams experience an advantage over away teams. This could be due to an intrinsic advantage for the home team, such as familiarity with the environment and crowd support. Alternately, it could result from an intrinsic disadvantage for the away team, such as the disrupting effect of travel on a team's schedule and routine.
Using a variety of methods, it is possible to express in units of points the home court advantage: during the 2003-2004 Division I men's season, it was registered for home teams a record of 2617-1294-246, meaning that home teams win about two-thirds of their games. For this analysis, the games with overtime(s) are referred as ties.

"... If a player that is going out of bounds throws the ball off the other teams player but he was already out of bounds... whose ball is it ? And which is the stats rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System: turnover or steal ? ..."

Rule Fundamentals: Rule 7-2-1: The ball is caused to go out of bounds by the last player in bounds to touch it or be touched by it, unless the ball touches a player who is out of bounds prior to touching something out of bounds other than a player.
Game Rule: Give the ball to the team that threw the ball off the other team.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration:
A Unforced Turnover is charged to the team which caused the ball to go out of bounds, and a Team Steal for the team which receives the ball and the possession.

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Michael Jordan !

Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963) is a retired American professional basketball player and active businessman. His biography on the National Basketball Association (NBA) website states, "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." Jordan was one of the most effectively marketed athletes of his generation and was instrumental in popularizing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.
"... After a stand-out career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jordan joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as one of the stars of the league, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, illustrated by performing slam dunks from the free throw line at Slam Dunk Contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness." He also gained a reputation as one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat." Though Jordan abruptly retired from basketball at the beginning of the 1993-94 NBA season to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998) as well as an NBA-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995–96 season. Jordan retired for a second time in 1999, but he returned for two more NBA seasons in 2001 as a member of the Washington Wizards. ..."
"... During the Bulls' playoff run in 1993, controversy arose when Jordan was seen gambling in Atlantic City the night before a game against the New York Knicks. In that same year, he admitted to having to cover $57,000 in gambling losses, and author Richard Esquinas wrote a book claiming he had won $1.25 million from Jordan on the golf course.
In 2005, Jordan talked to Ed Bradley of the CBS evening show 60 Minutes about his gambling and admitted that he made some reckless decisions. Jordan stated, "Yeah, I’ve gotten myself into situations where I would not walk away and I’ve pushed the envelope. Is that compulsive? Yeah, it depends on how you look at it. If you’re willing to jeopardize your livelihood and your family, then yeah."
When Bradley asked him if his gambling ever got to the level where it jeopardized his livelihood or family, Jordan replied, "No." ..."
"... On January 19, 2000, Jordan returned to the NBA not as a player, but as part owner and President of Basketball Operations for the Washington Wizards. His responsibilities with the club were to be comprehensive, as he was in charge of all aspects of the team, including personnel decisions. Opinions of Jordan as a basketball executive were mixed. He managed to purge the team of several highly paid, unpopular players (such as forward Juwan Howard and point guard Rod Strickland), but used the first pick in the 2001 NBA Draft to select high schooler Kwame Brown, who did not live up to expectations and was traded away after four seasons. ..."

Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Bob Lanier
Robert Jerry "Bob" Lanier, Jr. (born September 10, 1948), nicknamed The Dobber, is a retired American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA.
"... Lanier was born in Buffalo, New York. He played competitively at Buffalo's Bennett High School where he graduated in 1966, and collegiately at St. Bonaventure University, in Olean, New York.
Lanier was a three-time Converse All-America selection (1968-1970), and in 1970, he led St. Bonaventure to the NCAA Final Four, however, he was injured late in the regional championship game and did not participate in Bona's national semi-final loss to Artis Gilmore-led Jacksonville University. That year he was named Coach and Athlete Magazine player of the year, and the ECAC Player of the Year. ..."

Bob Lanier, 1984 ~ at the last game before retirement
"... Lanier was drafted number one overall by the National Basketball Association's Detroit Pistons and was named to the All-Rookie Team following the 1970-71 season. He starred for Detroit until being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 1980. In his five seasons with the Bucks, they won the division championship each year. The same year he retired, in 1984, he was awarded the Oscar Robertson Leadership Award. ..."
"... In his 14 NBA seasons, Lanier averaged 20.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while shooting a respectable 51.4 percent from the field. He played in eight NBA All-Star Games, and was named Most Valuable Player of the 1974 game. Lanier was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and had his #16 jersey retired by both the Pistons and the Bucks.
In 1994-95, he became interim head coach of the Golden State Warriors for 37 games after Don Nelson stood down, in which he compiled a 12-25 win-loss record. ..."

About the "Game Pace" factor: The "Game Pace" is a factor which takes into account the fact that some teams play at a faster pace than others, and therefore individual statistics may be padded for players on those teams that do play at a faster pace.
Pace factor is an estimate of the number of possessions per 48 or 40 minutes by a team and its opponents. It is calculated as follows:

Bracket Building ~ Using Tempo-Free Stats
From Basketball Prospectus
Download source here: ' Bracket Building ~ Using Tempo-Free Stats '
"... Possession-based stats remove the bias of playing tempo from the assessment of a team's offensive or defensive effectiveness. Eliminating the influence of tempo assumes, however, that there isn't any inherent value in playing the game faster or slower that supercedes efficiency. It's a reasonable assumption, but is it true, particularly in the pressure cooker of March Madness? Does an up-tempo style of play lead to tourney overachievement, or are more deliberate teams more likely to exceed seed expectations? ..."
"... For years, I argued against the old sports adage that "defense wins championships" in the NCAA tournament. The raw points-scored and points-allowed numbers seemed to indicate that offensive firepower was a much more reliable indicator of a deep tourney run than defensive stinginess. When I ran the possession-based defensive efficiency numbers through PASE analysis, however, I discovered that defense actually does matter. ..."
"... Some of the other surprising stats on this list involve pre-tourney momentum and winning percentage. For once, the pundits appear to be right: teams that are hotter coming to the dance do overachieve. I never would've imagined that raw winning percentage mattered, but the numbers don't lie. All five of the tourney champs--and 16 of 19 semi-finalists--have owned a record better than .796. ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: Assists ~ Made, Potential & Missed
"... After taking a defensive rebound, B5 makes a full court pass to B1 who misses a lay-up but has enough time to easily score from the rebound. Which is the statistical register ? Is there a potential assist in this play according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis ? ..."

No, it is not a potential assist case, from our statement that potential assist is the pass to another player, being oneself in a good shooting position, which misses the shot. B5 was not in shooting position at all in the moment of the pass.
Commentary from my Exposition at eBA Clinic:
" ... For the passer only counts as a possession if the shot goes into the basket. Had the passer shot the ball himself, it would counts in the direction of possession usage, careless of whether the shot went in. But when he passes it off to a teammate, the stats register this possession for him as an assist only if the shot goes in: so, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register for this passer a "potential assist" at the game analysis chapter. ... False Double Foul Statistical Registration
"... A1 is fouled on the arm by B1 as he taps the ball towards the basket following a teammate’s field goal attempt bounces off the ring. A1 then comes down violently into B2 who has legal position before the ball passes through the basket.
The second official calls the foul on B1 and the first official calls a player control foul on A-1.
The two officials confer one with the other from the moment that they both have called a foul.
What is the proper ruling and the correct statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."

Rule Interpretation: This situation is a false double foul. A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and then perpetrates a player control foul. Because of the player control foul by A1, the goal is declared null. Since A1 was fouled in the act of shooting, A1 is awarded 2 free throws with no line up on the lane for the reason that the ball will remain dead after the free throws. The ball is awarded to team B for a throw in on the end line at the spot nearest to where the foul occurred, in this case on the free throw lane line extended spot throw in.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration:
We register as following
1 - the missed FG of A1's teammate;
2 - an Offensive Rebound from A1 (the tap);
3 - a made foul against B1;
4 - a received shooting-foul in favour of A1;
5 - the 2 free throws from A1 which ends the Team A's possession; and finally
6 - the player control foul by A1 which begins the new possession for Team B.

The Best Basketball Quotes: Phil Jackson
"The ideal way to win a championship is step by step."

"In basketball -- as in life -- true joy comes from being fully present in each and every moment, not just when things are going your way."
"People think I would never take on a team that has no legitimate chance to win a championship, ... This is one of the major misconceptions about me. Success can be measured in many different ways. . . . Either way, I would find the challenge invigorating."
"Winning is important to me, but what brings me real joy is the experience of being fully engaged in whatever I'm doing."

"... We hear all the talk about how turnovers are hurting this team, and anyone who has a whit of basketball IQ knows that it's true. But sometimes, it's hard to figure out just how much they are hurting, and if all turnovers are created equal. ..."
"... Obviously, these are troubling statistics. We are giving the opponent an opportunity to score an average of 21.8 points per game plus surrendering the opportunity to score 25 for ourselves. That amounts to 46.8 points per game, and is more than the averages of Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson put together. ..."
"... Just look at how much turnovers alone are contributing to the opponent's score. If we had managed to cut turnovers by 25%, that would represent a net gain of 6.25 points, plus a net loss of 5.5 points for the opposition, for a total of 12 additional points. ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: Altered Shot and Basket Cases
"... A1 shoots and the shot is touched by B2 in an attempt to block the shot. The ball continues into the basket.
How we register this play and the action of B2 ?
Which is the statistical rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ..."

Rule Interpretation: From the moment the ball went straight into the basket, B2’s touching it did not change its flight in an appreciable manner.
eBA Basketball Statistics Registration: Dismiss the touching, charge A1 with an FGA and credit him with a FGM, but do not credit B2 neither with a blocked shot nor an altered shot.

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Vlade Divac !
Vlade Divac (Serbian Cyrillic: Владе Дивац, pronounced [ˈvlaːdɛ ˈdiːvaʦ]) (born February 3, 1968 in Prijepolje, Serbia, Yugoslavia) is a retired Serbian professional basketball player who spent most of his career in the United States' NBA. At 7'1", he played center and was known for his passing skills. Divac was among the first group of European Basketball players to transfer to the NBA in the late 1980s and is one of Euroleague's 50 greatest contributors. Divac is one of the only three players in NBA history to record 13,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists and 1,500 blocked shots, with the two others being hall-of-famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon.
Aside from being noticed for his basketball abilities, Divac is also known as a great humanitarian, helping children his native country of Serbia, as well as in Africa. On October 16, 2008, Divac was appointed as a government adviser in Serbia for humanitarian issues.
"... After the 2003-04 NBA season, he became a free agent. He signed a deal to return to the Lakers and was part of a grand plan to overhaul Laker basketball. The Lakers, following a defeat in the NBA Finals, had traded away or released most of their players, including Shaquille O'Neal, Gary Payton, Karl Malone, Derek Fisher and more; Divac was supposed to fill that void. However, Divac suffered back problems and was unable to play for most of the season, and even when he returned, was only able to play about nine minutes per game, averaging 2.3 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game in 15 games, he played 8 games early in the season and 7 more in the final month of the season. On 14 July 2005, Divac announced his retirement, ending his sixteen-year basketball career. ..."
"... In June 2006, through his friendship with Predrag Mijatović, Divac linked up with Ramón Calderón as part of the lawyer's candidate bid for the presidency of Real Madrid polideportivo. When Calderón closely won the club elections on July 2, 2006, Divac was introduced as the head of operations at Real Madrid basketball club.
However, Divac's role in the club's day to day operations is largely symbolic, and even he himself admitted as much in a March 2007 interview for Croatian weekly Globus: "I literally do nothing and I only serve as part of the royal club's image. I only accepted the job because of Mijatović, who is currently the football director at Real". ..."
