Statistician's Digest:
If you're using statistics, you might as well use the right ones
From Third Quarter Collapse
Download source here: ' Interview With Bradford Doolittle '
"... The name Bradford Doolittle may not ring a bell to the casual sports fan (unless you're living in Kansas City), but if you're a reader of Basketball Prospectus, you'll certainly recognize this sportswriter. Mr. Doolittle does fine work for both The Kansas City Star and Basketball Prospectus - where he currently covers Kansas City sports teams (for The Star) and the NBA (for BP). ..."
"... I have no formal training in statistics. I've always been good with numbers, mostly thanks to playing lots of Statis-Pro basketball when I was kid. For the same reason, I got into spreadsheets when I was in college. Believe it or not, that led to me serving a six-year sentence as an accountant. I consider myself more of a writer because I majored in English, have a big library of books (that I've actually read) and (try to) write fiction. When it comes to sports, though, I don't know how you do credible analysis and/or commentary without using lots of statistics. And if you're using statistics, you might as well use the right ones. ..."
"... As a follow-up question, no matter how you slice it statistically (using advanced metrics), there is a clear trio at the top of the NBA standings being grouped together - the Celtics, the Magic, & the Lakers. Between the three, which team do you believe is the best of the bunch? Why? ..."

Statistician's Digest: Basketball Statistician First Steps ~ in Brief
"... What are in your opinion the first steps in entering the professional basketball world as a statistician ? ..."
It is not so simple to answer your question in a forum post, I would need a complete exposition....
That's the reason the first step would be qualification: take one of the eBA basketball statistics register courses, although there is a wait list: register and be patient !
Then start getting your first experiences while you are still at school.
Be volunteer to keep stats for any basketball team of your school. The coach and players will appreciate your help.
From there, you are very close to the next step and contact the sports office at the college you are attending and apply for a paid or voluntary position as a statistician for any basketball team available.
And the final step begins a new process, your permanent improvement and love for your work !

Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Buck Williams
Charles Linwood Williams (born March 8, 1960 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina), better known as "Buck", is a retired American professional basketball player. He was well known for his rebounding ability and trademark goggles.
"... Williams, 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m), ranks 13th all-time in NBA career rebounds.[1] His 17-year NBA career was highlighted by three All-Star Game appearances, a Rookie of the Year award, an All-Rookie team selection, an All-NBA second team selection and four selections to the first and second NBA All-Defensive teams. ..."

Buck Williams, 1982 Rookie of the Year with the New Jersey Nets
"... The New Jersey Nets selected him third overall in the 1981 NBA Draft, behind Olympic teammates Aguirre and Thomas. In his first season with the Nets, he averaged 15.5 points and led the team with 12.3 rebounds per game, helping New Jersey win 20 more games (a 44-38 win-loss record) than the previous year and earning 1982 Rookie of the Year honors. Williams established himself as a premier player at the power forward position over the next eight seasons with the Nets; in six of those he was ranked among the best three rebounders in the league, never averaging less than twelve rebounds per game. This period (1984) featured the Nets' best playoff effort since the ABA-NBA merger in 1976 - their first second-round appearance, where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks; not until 2002 did the Nets get past the first round of the playoffs again. ..."
"... In the twilight of his career, after the 1995-96 season, Williams moved back to the Atlantic Division, signing with the New York Knicks, where he played in a much more limited capacity, behind the frontcourt duo of Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley. He spent two years with the Knicks, but was forced to miss 41 games during 1997-98 season due to knee surgery (the first time in his career he missed more than 12 games in a season). Williams announced his retirement on January 27, 1999, holding career averages of 12.8 points and ten rebounds per game and a field goal average of 54.9 percent. During the course of his 17 year NBA career, Williams racked up more than 16,000 points and 13,000 rebounds — one of only seven NBA players to ever reach both marks.
Williams served as the president of the NBA Players Association from 1994 to 1997. The Nets retired his #52 jersey in April 1999.
In 2006 he was named as an inductee into the Rocky Mount Twin County Hall of Fame. ..."

Statistician's Digest:
The Use of In-Depth Statistical Analysis in Basketball
From The Biz of Basketball, by Nick Kappel
Download source here: ' The Use of In-Depth Statistical Analysis in Basketball ' By Nick Kappel
"... While this sort of in-depth statistical analysis makes sense for a slow-paced game such as baseball, a faster-paced game like basketball would be much more difficult to keep up with. Not only that, but baseball keeps track of situational statistics, such as a player's batting average with runners in scoring position, batting average with two outs, or batting average after an 0-2 count. If you dig a little deeper, you will discover statistics such as Value Over Replacement Player (VORP). This stat reveals how much a player contributes to his team in comparison to a fictitious 'replacement player'. ..."
"... What's the most efficient shot to take besides a lay-up? Easy, says Zarren: a three-pointer from the corner. What's one of the most misused, misinterpreted statistics? 'Turnovers are way more expensive that people think,' Zarren says. That's because most teams focus on the points a defense scores from the turnover but don't correctly value the offense's opportunity cost that is, the points it might have scored had the turnover not occurred. ..."
"... Despite the growing use of statistical analysis in basketball, both Ainge and Hinkie acknowledged the fact that other variables are considered when making personnel or strategic decisions......"

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Arvydas Macijauskas !
Arvydas Macijauskas (born January 19, 1980 in Klaipėda, Lithuanian SSR, Soviet Union) is a Lithuanian professional basketball player. He is currently in a court dispute with his former team Olympiacos BC of the Greek League.
Macijauskas is 1.93 m (6 ft 4 in) in height and he weighs 98 kg (215 lb). He plays at the shooting guard position. He is one of the most accurate 3-point shooters in the Euroleague, often maintaining season accuracy percentages around 50%.
He holds the second record of all time in consecutive successful free throws made in the Euroleague, making 94 in a row, before missing one on November 26, 2003, in a game against ALBA Berlin.
Macijauskas played in the Euroleague 2004-05 final game of the Moscow Final Four, after his team TAU Cerámica qualified for the championship game with a win over CSKA Moscow in the semi-final.
He signed a four-year contract worth €9 million Euros net with the Greek League team Olympiacos on July 20, 2006. He sustained an Achilles tendon injury on September 16, 2006, during a friendly game.
On the 31st of March 2007, he played for the first time in a friendly game, after his serious injury. He played his first two games after his serious injury against his former team, Tau Ceramica, scoring 2 points in the first game and 13 in the second game.
Macijauskas showed a great improvement from his injury and gave a terrific performance during the first two months of the Euroleague 2007-08 season. He was awarded the Euroleague's November MVP award. For the month of November that season, he had an average of 30 player ranking points per game and he shot 80% overall from the field.
In 2008, Macijauskas was accused by the club Olympiacos Piraeus for training with professional basketball players in 2007, where he got injured once more[1]. Because of Macijauskas continuous injuries, Olympiacos Piraeus want to cancel his contract without a compensation. The court is currently pending the judgement whether Macijauskas should get a compensation. Meanwhile, he cannot play in any team in Euroleague.

During 19 games played in the NBA with the New Orleans Hornets during the 2005–06 NBA season, Macijauskas scored a total of 44 points in 135 minutes, for a scoring average of 2.3 points per game.
His NBA Career highs are:
* Most points scored in one game: 8; New Orleans Hornets vs Atlanta Hawks.
* Total rebounds in one game: 3; New Orleans Hornets vs Atlanta Hawks.
Following the 2005-06 NBA season, Macijauskas returned to the Euroleague, and he later strongly criticized the NBA, his former team the New Orleans Hornets, and his former coach Byron Scott, saying, "I want to forget that year. Everything went wrong. A really bad coach, a bad franchise...The NBA isn't fun. Teams are no teams, there's no true commitment between the teammates. Everybody is always talking about money and business, so it seems it doesn't matter to win or lose."

Statistician's Digest:
Economics is Not a Science, Nor is Basketball Statistical Analysis
From 20 Second Timeout, a Blog by David Friedman
Download source here: ' Economics is Not a Science, Nor is Basketball Statistical Analysis ' By David Friedman
"... It is precisely that kind of wrongheaded thinking--and arrogance--that leads to much of the nonsense that is spewed by people who think (or at least claim) that they are scientifically analyzing basketball (I'm not sure if these guys know better but enjoy selling books and getting a lot of publicity for themselves or if they really believe what they are saying). Unfortunately, the general public suffers not only from illiteracy (or at least poor reading comprehension) but also from "Innumeracy." ..."
"... One tell-tale sign that these numbers are not the products of science is that you do not hear their creators speak of margin of error. If a scientific formula spits out the number 30.4 as a player value the reality is that there is a certain probability that the actual value is somewhat higher or lower than that--but the "stats gurus" rarely if ever mention this and they certainly don't emphasize this point as much as it should be emphasized; they like to promote the idea that their numbers are "exact" while observations by seasoned professionals (scouts and other talent evaluators) are subjective. ..."
"... "Stats gurus" plainly do not want to discuss or consider the fact that some of their most precious numbers--the raw data that they plug into their formulas, stats like assists, steals, blocked shots and turnovers--are subjectively recorded. During last season's playoffs, I did a detailed post demonstrating that Chris Paul's supposedly record setting playoff assist totals were in fact inflated by generous scorekeeping. ..."

Statistician's Digest: Five Thoughts That Won't Change Basketball Forever
From TrueHoop, a Blog by Henry Abbot
Download source here: ' Five Thoughts That Won't Change Basketball Forever ' By Henry Abbot
"... One of the key recent innovations in basketball statistics is pace. And I'm all for it. Pace matters in all kinds of ways, and at this point, it is probably just wholly pointless to worry about things like points and rebounds per game, when such stats are available per possession. ..."
"... Another little conundrum to do with possessions. By the definition that is commonly used, both teams have the same number of possessions in a game. My team has it, then your team has it, and back and forth. Except ... not exactly. ..."
"... Basketball watchers, myself included, are obsessed with the notion that good players perform well at the end of close games. I guess the thinking is that of course your team will be in close games that matter, so it's good to be ready for that.
But stat experts generally insist that it really doesn't make any difference when in the game you play well. If you play great in the first quarter, that same game that would have featured crunch time would quite probably be a comfortable lead for your team. So why obsess on players who close well? ..."
"... I am wondering if anyone out there knows all about marathon split times, and has all kinds of data to analyze. I'd be interested to know: Do champion runners tend to be faster at the end than the rest of the field? Or are they more commonly faster in some other part of the race? ..."
