About the Basketball Time Played Statistical Registration
"... Before a single free throw is attempted, A1 enters the game. The free throw is not scored, but there is a free-throw violation. The clock never starts and A1 leaves the game. The violation was against A1: how we must register the time played statistics ? And also, how to register if the violation was against another player ? ..."

eBA Statistical Registration=
We must register a game played to A1 since he had a violation and a turnover, as results of this foul. Enter ' 0 ' under minutes played. If the violation was against another player, therefore we don't charge A1 with a game played.

About a Traveling Violation, and a Forced or an Unforced Turnover
"... If a player, while holding the ball, touches the floor with a knee or any other part of the body other than hand or foot, what is the rule and the statistical registration ? ..."

Photograph: Matt Sullivan from The Star.com
If a player, while holding the ball, touches the floor with a knee or any other part of the body other than hand or foot, it results in a Traveling violation and a personal Turnover: forced or unforced ( without a defender interference ) depending upon the opponent action.
On the contrary, any action or pressure as result of the defender work, which causes the turnover, make it a Forced one.
If the action in the picture ends in traveling ( or any other violation...) against University of Louisville forward Jared Swopshire, on the centre, we must register a FORCED TURNOVER due to the pressure by Morehead State forward Maze Stallworth, on the right, who'll perform a FORCED STEAL.

Basketball History ~ Great Basketball Moments:
First Basketball Game in History... !

The first basketball game was played on December 21, 1891 in the YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, with 2 teams of nine players each.
Mr. Naismith acted as referee and Mr. Stebbins, the school's janitor, stood ready with a ladder to retrieve the ball out of the basket should someone score.
He did not get much exercise, because the final score was 1 - 0. This did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players, who had so much fun that they were hooked on basketball, named because peach baskets had been used for goals.
This is a unique drawing of a japanese student from the school drawn "during that game".

The Use of In-Depth Statistical Analysis in Basketball
From The Biz of Basketball By Nick Kappel
Download source here: ' The Use of In-Depth Statistical Analysis in Basketball '
"... While this sort of in-depth statistical analysis makes sense for a slow-paced game such as baseball, a faster-paced game like basketball would be much more difficult to keep up with.
Not only that, but baseball keeps track of situational statistics, such as a player's batting average with runners in scoring position, batting average with two outs, or batting average after an 0-2 count.
If you dig a little deeper, you will discover statistics such as Value Over Replacement Player (VORP). This stat reveals how much a player contributes to his team in comparison to a 'fictitious replacement player' ..."
"... In-depth statistics such as VORP aren't as commonly known in the game of basketball.
Fans may know game stats of their favorite player, such as how many points or rebounds he averages per game, or how well he shoots from the foul line. But nobody is keeping track of how much Kobe Bryant contributes to his team in comparison to a 'replacement player'. ..."
"... What's the most efficient shot to take besides a lay-up?
Easy, says Zarren: a three-pointer from the corner.
What's one of the most misused, misinterpreted statistics?
'Turnovers are way more expensive that people think,' Zarren says.
'That's because most teams focus on the points a defense scores from the turnover but don't correctly value the offense's opportunity cost' that is, the points it might have scored had the turnover not occurred. ..."
"... Player points per minute, team points per possession, rebound percentage.
These are examples of stats that Hinkie uses to analyze a potential trade or draft choice. ..."
"... floor-time stats (individual player plus/minus; how a team fares with a certain player on the floor), 5-man unit stats (most-used five-man combos and how they fare together), player pairs (stats looking at team performance with each two-man pair on the court) and many, many more that frankly are too difficult to explain.
Despite the growing use of statistical analysis in basketball, both Ainge and Hinkie acknowledged the fact that other variables are considered when making personnel or strategic decisions..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
The Alternate-possession Rule Must Change ?
" ... Why the alternate-possession rule must be changed ?
- An inspired defensive effort by a trailing team should not be undone because it's the other team's turn to take possession.
- An official's inability to consistently make a fair toss should not alter the rules of the game.
- The rule really penalizes a great defensive effort. You can make a great defensive play but late in the game Team B forces a jump ball, an alternate possession goes to Team A who scores the goal in the last second to win the game.
- When they try to make the game too fair, they take away the whole reason for competing. It shouldn't be a 'fair' factor. It should be whomever is aggressive enough to get his hands on the ball. That's the unknown about any sport. That's what makes the sport interesting.

Why changing the alternate-possession rule would not be efficient ?
- For the same reason it was established the potential for a toss that gives one team an unfair advantage over the other.
- A late-game jump ball, in an intense sequence, increases the possibility of injury to officials.
- At least some advantage is gained from tying up the ball, even if it is only reversing the possession arrow.
- The alternative is worse. In many instances, one or the other team has a dominant big man who almost always controls the tip. ... "

All our basketball statistics forums are plenty of this type of video-questions about statistics analysis: the statistician and / or the game analyst must register what happen in the game, and not to analyze the official's calls. Another people do this...
This is not an "correctable official error" case ( see this thread at eBA Forums ) neither we have possibility of giving a "team turnover" in order to avoid punishing a player twice ( see this thread at eBA Forums ).
Game is over, register the three-pointer missed by #11 White, and the offensive rebound and winning goal by the #33 white player under the basket and over the head of #30 Blue after a bad defensive move.

Chapters in the Basketball History:
Richard (Rick) Francis Dennis Barry III
Richard (Rick) Francis Dennis Barry III (born March 28, 1944, in Elizabeth, New Jersey) is a retired American professional basketball player.

Rick Barry - 1977
Master of the skill of Making A Freethrow
He is considered by many veteran basketball observers to be one of the greatest pure small forwards of all time as a result of his very precise outside shot, uncanny court vision, knowledge and execution of team defense principles, tenacious and ofttimes demanding will to win, and unorthodox but accurate underhanded "granny shot" free throw shooting.
Barry is one of few elite players who have altered their games without losing effectiveness; he broke into the professional ranks as a rebounder and all-purpose points machine before he morphed into a primary ball distributor and lethal perimeter threat.
Named one of the 50 Greatest Players in history by the NBA in 1996, Barry is the only player to lead the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), ABA and NBA in scoring for an individual season. In 1987, Barry was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Barry also ranks on the short list of greatest underdog players in basketball history, as his teams repeatedly overachieved despite marginal talent around him. Longtime NBA writer Paul Ladewski has referred to him as Ricky Balboa, a reference to Rocky Balboa, the prize fighter of motion picture fame who was at his best in the face of long odds.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
Reflexions about the Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out
How to make a statistical calculation of the player's missed playing time ascribable to fouls ?
Is there in the the eBA System some data about the player utilization and substitution set of rules in the foul trouble case ? That means to say, when they are sent to the bench and after which foul number ?
To calculate missed playing time ascribable to fouls, we must base our analysis in the following assumptions about player usage and substitution patterns:
In FIBA & NBA:
No change when a player commits his first foul.
Committing his second a player foul would be replaced and have to wait at the bench until the half of the second quarter.
A player committing his third foul would be replaced and would be a bench player until the third quarter.
With the critical (in FIBA) fourth foul committed a player would be replaced and have to sit until the beginning of the the fourth quarter.
In NBA:
A player committing his fifth foul would have to be out of the game until the half of the fourth quarter.

Now, how often do players foul out of a game ? When the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul happens ? Which percentage of the players with the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul are fouled out ?
- 49% of the 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA come with about 3 minutes left in the game: remember to consider, 40 minutes in FIBA and 48 in the NBA !
- 82% of all players who perpetrate a 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA do not foul out.
This is reasonable from the moment the studies from eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System demonstrates that even the most players having a tendency to foul lose only a few minutes per game because of their foul trouble. But they play the great majority of their minutes near the danger of fouling out.
The analysis of the different types of Foul Trouble, are studied in the eBA Basketball Statistics Register Clinic.

Allen Iverson Ends Short-Lived Retirement
From 20 Second Timeout By David Friedman
Download source here: ' Allen Iverson Ends Short-Lived Retirement '
"... Iverson's relatively modest statistics were actually pretty good for someone who has not played in an NBA game in a month and it is worth noting that he had the second best plus/minus number for the 76ers (-1, trailing only Iguodala's +1); in other words, the Nuggets did most of their damage when Iverson was not on the court. ..."
"... The game's outcome is hardly surprising; the Sixers were 5-15 prior to Iverson's arrival and had lost nine straight games. In fact, the Sixers have yet to win more than 41 games in a season since jettisoning Iverson early in the 2006-07 campaign; with Iverson onboard, they won at least 43 games in five of the seven full seasons prior to that and posted a .561 winning percentage (equivalent to 46 wins in an 82 game season) during the lockout shortened 1999 season, Iverson's third year in the league. ..."
"... Supposedly, Iverson's unwillingness to come off of the bench scared away most of his potential suitors but--as Iverson mentioned in his recent interview with John Thompson--prior to Iverson's arrival in Detroit there had never been a question about whether or not Iverson should be a starter. ..."
"... Whether or not you like Iverson, he has earned respect because of his productivity and because of how hard he plays. The reason that Berri's articles about Iverson are so detestable and the reason that I respond so forcefully to them is that it seems like Berri--a nobody in his primary field, someone whose work assuredly will not stand the test of time--is trying to make a name for himself as an NBA "stat guru" at Iverson's expense ..."
"... One of the great mysteries of the universe (or least the basketball universe) is why ESPN's Henry Abbott has seemingly made it his personal mission to heavily promote Berri's half baked basketball ideology; even other "stat gurus" are extremely skeptical about Berri's methodologies, yet Abbott incessantly links to Berri as if Berri has discovered the Holy Grail of basketball analysis. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
The Most Helpful Scorebook Stats before Going into the Locker Room ...!
Which are the most helpful scorebook stats, for example before going into the locker room at half time, according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, and why ?
Logically, the best and first indicator of the winner is to be sure that the team that has the most points is my proper team..., and only after that, I see the most helpful scorebook stats:

- defensive touches tracked and shots inside the paint... ( how aggressive are we playing ? );
- number of fouls called on each team... ( who shoots the most free throws ? );
- rebounds... ( are our rebounds at 40+ / 50+ per game and we own the boards ? );
- turnovers, steals... ( are the immediate gratification you are looking for in a game...);
- the shot chart for both teams by quarter ( are we shooting to many jumpers and not attacking the rim ? );
- the shots by 4, 8, 16, 20 & 24 seconds report ( is this game pace our game pace? );
- missed layups... ( all the other problems will get over that as soon as players start making layups !);
- deflections... ( are we getting good pressure in the passing lanes ? );
- turnover/assist ratio for players and turnovers/steals ratio for the team ( more assists and steals, OK ? );
- OER (offensive efficiency rating)= total points scored divided by total possessions;
- DER (defensive efficiency rating)= total points allowed divided by total possessions;
- these last two stats take the tempo of the game out of the equation and give you a true sense of how effective you are at scoring and stopping the other team.
In my opinion, everything else is post-game analysis as proposed in my eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
About the Transformed Data in a Basketball Game Analysis
"... How and why can we transform data from a basketball game analysis ..."
As we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic ONLINE, sometimes, we transform data from a basketball game analysis, for example, to make fit the number of turnovers from one team to the steal of the other in relation to the total of possessions adding it to the statistics of the "team player".
I've never been a "fan" of transforming data, because you need a reason for log transformation. There are many types of transformations too.
but now, if you decide to do a transformation, then you should do the hypothesis test using transformed data.
The reason I don't like transforming data, is because interpreting the results is always problematic: telling a head coach about the log of the data points will always get you a puzzled look, and this is not good.
If the data are skewed badly enough, then you may want to consider:
a.- finding probable causes for the "outliers" and removing them, or
b.- using a nonparametric method.
However, if there's a really, really good reason, then there are virtually unlimited ways to transform data, as we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic - just make sure you pick the one that meets your analytical needs....
See in our forum the transformed data topics and the exposition "Basketball Statistics and Statisticians" at eBA ONLINE.

Unforgettable Basketball Legends: Bob Cousy
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Robert Joseph "Bob" Cousy (born August 9, 1928 in New York City) is a former American professional basketball player. The 6'1", 175 lbs. Cousy played point guard with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Boston Celtics from 1951 to 1963 and briefly with the Cincinnati Royals in the 1969-70 season. Born to French immigrants, Cousy had a highly successful career with the Celtics, winning six championship rings, being voted into 13 All-Star and 12 All-NBA First and Second Teams and winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 1957. An excellent book was written ( see on the left ) by Bill Reynolds about 'Cousy: His Life and Career'. |
Bob Cousy - 1957 NBA MVP
Cousy played point guard with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Boston Celtics from 1951 to 1963 and briefly with the Cincinnati Royals in the 1969–70 season.
Cousy first demonstrated his basketball abilities while playing for his high school varsity team in his junior year. He obtained a scholarship to the College of the Holy Cross, where he led the Crusaders to berths in the 1948 and 1950 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament and was named an NCAA All-American for three seasons.Cousy was initially drafted as the third overall pick in the first round of the 1950 NBA Draft by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, but after he refused to report with the Blackhawks, he was picked up by the Boston Celtics.
Cousy had a highly successful career with the Celtics, winning six championship rings, being voted into 13 All-Star and 12 All-NBA First and Second Teams and winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 1957.
In his first 11 seasons in the NBA, Cousy led the league in assists eight consecutive times and introduced a new blend of ball-handling and passing skills, earning him the nicknames "The Cooz," "Houdini of the Hardwood", and—as he was regularly introduced at Boston Garden—"Mr. Basketball."
After his player career, he coached the Royals for several years, and even made a short comeback for the Royals at age 41. Afterwards, he became a broadcaster for Celtics games. He was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971, and in his honor, the Celtics retired his number 14 jersey and hung it into the rafters of the Boston Garden, where it has remained since.
Cousy was named to the NBA 25th Anniversary Team in 1971, the NBA 35th Anniversary Team in 1981, and the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996, making him one of only four players that were selected to each of those teams.

The Basketball Team Statistician as a Full-time Professional Career
"... From the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System requirements point of view the Basketball statistician must do this work on a full-time basis and must be eligible for a good compensation: as we are speaking about a professional career as a sports statistician. Although the reality show us that most persons who do sports statistics do this on a part-time basis and are paid, sometimes, only for the day for individual games.

It must be understood that the 'Basketball game analysis' is not a matter of collect sports results and provide the leagues and the media with significant information for their clients different and varied needs. ..."
"... The Basketball Team Statistician must have the skills to control, verify and examine once again his work all the time, in order to avoid mistakes.
He must confront all his work against the play-by-play, being vitally necessary a team work. ..."

"... Julius Erving put up the first--and most impressive--five-tool season. In 1975-76, he led the ABA in scoring (29.3 ppg) and ranked in the top seven or better in the league in each of the other four categories. He also placed eighth in two point field goal percentage and seventh in three point field goal percentage. ..."
"... Scottie Pippen’s five-tool season happened in 1994-95, year two of Michael Jordan’s first retirement. Pippen actually had slightly better numbers in 1993-94 but Horace Grant led the team in rebounding and blocked shots that year. Grant signed with the Orlando Magic prior to the 1994-95 season and his departure left a serious void in the paint, but Pippen’s all-around greatness helped to keep the Bulls afloat. ..."
"... Tracy McGrady became a five-tool player in 2002-03 by the narrowest of margins, averaging 1.653 spg (124 steals in 75 games), just eclipsing Darrell Armstrong’s 1.646 spg (135 steals in 82 games). McGrady, then playing for the Orlando Magic, led the NBA in scoring (32.1 ppg) and posted a healthy apg average (5.5).
His team leadership in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and blocked shots (.79) reflected the Magic’s weakness in the paint more than anything else, although his numbers were quite good for a guard, particularly one who carried such a heavy scoring load. ..."
"... Playing alongside Yao Ming in Houston, McGrady is unlikely to have another five-tool season. Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
The Applicability of a Statistical System for High School Basketball
In our Basketball Statistics eBA Clinics, the participants always ask about the applicability of our statistical system for high school basketball.
It is inevitable: last years high school students get scouters attention ! We read in one of our articles in the Scouting section an appeal to the high school students "to be sure to enjoy their High School Basketball experience, and sell-out for the team !
Some student/athletes over-emphasize the recruiting process and end up under-achieving because of the excessive pressure they put on themselves to impress recruiters, an over-emphasis upon statistics, or saving themselves for college. Work hard, hustle, and play your game to help your team!"

It is clear, from the name of our system and the site, that we are working for "basketball professional teams". I don't think that a complete statistical system must be applied in the High School, but about the fact that the high school coach must keep basics statistics we have no any doubt, specially on the last years.
And its use and results must be emphasized in the coaching program: that's mean, the use of the stats to help the player to improve himself in the rights areas and to assist the coach in the programming of his trainings more accurately.
Perhaps the clinics participants intended to ask if all this set of complex formulas of analysis are necessary at high school.... Please hear to this old basketball coach and statistician analyst: all the time you can.... work with your players on basketball fundamentals !
The future NBA Coach of your actual players will give, however secretly, the credit to You....!

Pro Basketball Prospectus 2009-10
By Bradford Doolittle and Kevin Pelton
"... For the last two seasons, Basketball Prospectus has been at the cutting edge of the NBA's statistical revolution, exploring how teams win and why as well as integrating plenty of old-fashioned tape and first-hand observation to analyze players and teams.
Now, we're following in the footsteps of our predecessors at Baseball Prospectus and our college counterparts by providing that same level of insight in book form.....
Doolittle and Pelton capture the thrills and frills of the upcoming pro-basketball season in this soon-to-be classic, Pro Basketball Prospectus 2009-2010. Basketball Prospectus serves as a meaningful guide for both the avid fan and the novice.
Pelton, a pioneer in the usage of APBR metrics in professional basketball, uses expert analysis to assess the viability for success of each franchise. Alongside the statistics is an upbeat narrative giving the reader an inside-look into the league. The book uses both trends, expert opinion and a keen knowledge of team personnel to forecast success. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
Defining Basketball Possessions and Basketball Plays
In our Basketball Statistics eBA Clinics, I have broadly defined a possession as a basketball instance which starts when one team gains control ( possession ) of the ball and ends when the team abandons the control of the ball.
Now, plays have the same characteristics as possessions, other than offensive rebounds establish anew play. Plays are not equal for both teams, because a team can shoot, miss, rebound the ball many times, resulting in several plays for one team and no play for the opponent.
Many times, plays are referred as possessions, therefore I recommend to be careful about the terminology. Number of plays can be counted or estimated as:
Plays= FGA + 0,44xFTA + TO
In a recent post I explained my opinion about the multiplying factor 0,44 coefficient, saying about that "...the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis, looking for exactness, register the real number of times the team reached the line for 2 or 3 free throws with the concept UP TO THE LINE, remarking between parenthesis the number of times the last throw was MADE. ...".
Finally, "play percentage" is the percentage of plays on which at least one point is scored.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions:
How are assists awarded in the NBA? How the eBA System register an assist?
"... How are assists awarded in the NBA? Is it a pass that results in a basket with no dribbles, one dribble, etc., in between? As in the NBA everything is different: are there specific guidelines for official scoring ? ..."
Basically, there is no difference with another leagues in this category, only the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System have a special treatment with the assists.
According to the NBA’s statisticians' manual, an assist is credited to the player tossing "the last pass leading directly to a field goal if, and only if, the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating immediate reaction toward the basket."
An assist can be credited if a receiving player takes a dribble, so long as he makes an immediate reaction toward the basket.
See in our forum the assists topics and the exposition "Basketball Assists Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

Sunday's Reflections on Basketball Statistics:
Free Throws Line Up - Rules Differences & Statistics Registration
At NF - National Federation (U.S. High School):
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- as many as 8 players can be on the lane (4 each side), and you could have 5 from one team, as any vacant spot can be filled by an opponent.
At NCAA, NBA, FIBA:
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- only a maximum of 5 players may be on the lane: 3 opponents of the shooter and 2 teammates.
At NBA:
c- the lowest 4 spots MUST be filled on the final throw.
At FIBA:
c- any of the spots may be empty, but must remain empty if the team entitled to them does not fill it.
At NF, NCAA, FIBA:
d- players not in marked lane spots, must remain outside the 3 point arc and behind the free throw line extended until the ball strikes the ring.
At NBA:
d- this part of the rule is somewhat more liberal.
Free throws are an organised process, for the statistician too. Let us see something about the basketball statistics register in this case. Really, is the shoot we have all the time to register data. The shooter takes his place behind the free throw line (4.5 metres or 15 feet from the basket). All other players must stand in their correct places until the ball leaves the shooter's hands:
The number of players allowed by the rule - according the last message - lines up along the sides of the restricted area (keyhole, paint, lane). These players are normally the ones that rebound the ball. Three or four line up on one side and two or four on the other. In all the rules, a defensive player always takes the place closest to the basket.
The remaining players, must remain behind the three point line and the free throw line extended (an imaginary line extended from the free throw line in both directions to the sidelines).
Leaving their designated places before the ball leaves the shooter's hands, interfering with the ball, and (for the defensive team only) attempting to put off the shooter, are all violations. In addition, the shooter must release the ball within five seconds (ten in the NBA) and must not step on or over the free throw line until the ball touches the ring.
- A violation by the shooter cancels the free throw and the statistician register a missed free throw and a team rebound for the opponents, in case of last free throw;
- a violation by the defensive team results in a substitute free throw if the shooter missed and no stats register in the possessions counting, only at the play-by-play relate - see eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System;
- a violation by the offensive team or a shot that completely misses the ring and backboard results in the loss of possession to the defensive team (only if it is on the last free throw), the statistician register a missed last free-throw and a defensive team rebound on FT for the defensive team.

About the Basketball Analysis and Basketball Numerology
From Yale Daily News By Robert Kruse
Download source here: ' M. Basketball | Analysis: Basketball numerology '
"... To answer this question, the team’s winning percentage of .400 would on the surface indicate that the Elis are slightly below average, with average being winning half the games played. Such an analysis is hampered, though, by the fact that the strength and quality of the team’s opposition highly influences what that team’s record will be. After all, good teams can have bad records by playing many great teams. ..."
"... According to calculations by Joe Lunardi of ESPN, Yale has played the 291st toughest schedule in the nation, meaning that the men’s basketball team has struggled despite playing a fairly easy schedule. At the same time, Harvard stands at 9-6 but has played the 331st toughest schedule, even considering their game against (and win over) No. 24 Boston College. That suggests the Crimson might be weaker then they appear at first glance. ..."
"... Combining a team’s record and strength of schedule into one measure, the NCAA developed the Rating Percentage Index (RPI) in 1981 to rank all basketball teams for the tournament. ..."
"... “In the NBA when all you are doing is playing basketball, statistics are more important,” Braswell said. “In the college game, people are a lot more up and down each game [since] if you have a lot of midterms one week, you can’t get in the gym a lot and your shooting percentage will go down.” ..."
"... “As far as assists and turnovers, the scorekeeper can affect it a lot,” Edwards said. “There are times that our teams go on the road and assists are barely kept. [Overall], I don’t think people should put too much emphasis on turnovers and assists.”
While the sources for such statistics can be dubious, Eli coaches nevertheless prepare their players with advanced scouting reports laden with statistical analyses for each game. ..."
"... But other players admitted that they do follow some statistics closely as a way to measure the team’s or their own individual progress. Guard Chris Andrews ’09 said he follows his assist-to-turnover ratio given his roles in protecting and distributing the ball as a point guard on the team. As a team, he explained the Elis have different goals. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
Reflection about Preventing Points from and Scoring More Points
I just explained in one of my last expositions in eBA CLINICS ONLINE that... "... as far as you analyze one's basketball team defense, In addition to all the formulas we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic, the principal question any statistician would have to ask is: what does the individual player do to prevent points from being scored ? and what does he do to enable his team to score more points than the other team ?
Steals and defensive rebounds are distinctly important in that context, since each takes a possession away from the opponent.
Fouls are important, since a good batch of the time they directly lead to the opponent getting free throws. Blocked shots, while interesting for the fans, is of borderline value, since it only decreases the other teams FG%, and does not assure a change of possession. A + / - chart, indicating the margin of points the teams scores in relation to their opponent when a player is on the court, would also be useful, since it allows us to compare individual players to their teammates and to other players around the league.
Getting steals and creating turnovers with a trapping, opportunist defense, getting a lot of deflections and a lot of loose balls, means to annul the opponent transition game, and shows full and continue activity of the defender players.
Also the basketball weight trainers understand that basketball training or basketball weight training must be designed to optimally elevate the vertical jump, speed, and stamina on the court. This means more blocked shots, steals and successful fast breaks which will translate to more team wins ! ..."

Sunday's Reflections on Basketball Statistics:
About the Statistics Analysis & Basketball Court Positions
From the point of view of the statistical analysis: how do we define a player's position ? Is it primarily a player's role in the offense ? A player's height ? A player's defensive range in terms of quickness, strength, and height ?
Is it possible to have two centers or point guards on the court, or does one of them become a '2' or '4' ? How significant is the difference between a 2 and a 3?
Which is the importance and the influence of the position in the basketball statistical analysis ?
From the moment that player's position is often left out of most basketball analysis systems, is there in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System the factor position as a parameter of a study ? How necessary are the traditional positions? Have the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System studies or theories presented that reinforce the convention of having a point guard, a second guard, a small forward, a power forward, and a center ?

It is absolutely necessary that we begin thinking in terms of roles rather than positions. Our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System describe and classify these roles and works in this terms.
As soon as possible we must trash traditional positional designations — at least with regards to our statistics analysis — and start working on something more important: player roles.
Basketball game developed so much from that time when positions were an early attempt to describe roles.
To refer nowadays to those traditional designations is a pass back. Not open to doubt that every team needs what traditionally is a point guard, a far-seeing, sure-handed player to initiate an offense once the ball has been brought upcourt.
But today, more and more teams plays with players who can't manage other point guard duties but are still used to initiate offense. Therefore, what the teams need is a player who will set up the offense and get the ball to where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.
You can call him a PG, but in terms of statistics analysis you can't forget to recognize the primary existence of roles.
This theme is developed in my first exposition "Statistics & Statisticians" at the Basketball Statistics Registration Course in eBA Clinics.

The Greatest Scoring Machines in Pro Basketball History
From 20 Second Timeout By David Friedman
Download source here: ' The Greatest Scoring Machines in Pro Basketball History '
"... When discussing the greatest scorers in pro basketball history it is only natural to look at career scoring average. Once a player scores 10,000 points or participates in 400 regular season games he is eligible to be ranked among the career points per game leaders. The list of career ppg leaders often combines retired veterans with active players in the prime of their careers. ..."
"... It is much more informative to broaden the discussion to include other relevant statistics. The accompanying chart compares 18 of the greatest scorers in pro basketball history at various stages of their careers. This article will focus primarily on three of these players: Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan. ..."
"... Whether or not Jordan passes Kareem in total points or slips behind Wilt in career scoring average, he will be remembered for what he did in his peak years. Jordan averaged 32.6 ppg in his first five seasons (11,263 points in 345 games) and was still at 32.6 ppg after seven seasons (16,596 points in 509 games).
He only dipped slightly to 32.2 ppg after 10 seasons (21,998 points in 684 games, including an 18 game season in 1985-86 due to a broken foot and a 17 game season in 1994-95 after his first comeback). Jordan has bested Chamberlain in two areas: 30-plus ppg seasons (eight to seven) and scoring titles (ten to seven). ..."
"... Julius Erving and Jordan are the only "mid-size" players of these five. Dr. J averaged 28.7 ppg in his first five seasons, all in the ABA. He won three scoring titles, once topping 30 ppg. His career average stood at 26.6 ppg after seven seasons and 26.1 ppg after ten. He finished his career with 30,026 points in 1243 games (24.2 ppg). ..."
"... Several of the great scoring machines sacrificed individual numbers in order to help their teams challenge for championships by becoming more balanced offensively: Wilt, Dr. J, Moses Malone, Oscar Robertson, Adrian Dantley—but no one exemplifies this more than Bob McAdoo, a three time scoring champion who became a sixth man for the Showtime Lakers and played on their 1981-82 and 1984-85 championship teams. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
Reflection about Statistics and Efficiency in Basketball
About efficiency in Basketball: "But is it even possible to say what constitutes efficiency in Basketball? More points in fewer minutes seems the most transparent analogy, but it’s not a terribly useful thing to know.
Obviously, efficiency relates to a player’s production, but a player can “produce” hundred of different things in five minutes of Basketball and we only keep track of that which is easy to count. And if we combine all of those measurements into one index, we have to make ridiculous assumptions like: four rebounds are worth three assists.
What would it mean to compile a team of extremely efficient players?
From what I can tell, it describes a team full of players who are particularly precious at accumulating more “numbers” in fewer possessions above all else. Less obvious strengths, like defensive presence, passing ability, and energy are deemed less important, making for what could be a homogeneous and uninteresting team.

Photograph: from 'Basketball Notes by Alex'
But this post is not meant to be an attack on John Hollinger, top of ESPN’s NBA writing staff, or 82games.com (who claim not to have discovered the definitive way to evaluate players).
The idea that everything can and should be quantified has led to using efficiency (of the sell and produce more at less cost variety) as the measuring stick for effectiveness.
This idea began in the business world and has bled into other areas, including sports and education. Among entirely too many important people, efficiency is equated with value and utility.
An efficient company or organization creates a cheaper and better product, benefiting company and society simultaneously. Everyone wins, at least from that perspective....." Read the complete post at freedarko.blogspot.com

Does the 3 second count continues during a basketball interrupted dribble ?
" ...Does the 3 second count continues during an interrupted dribble ? ..."
Commentary:
Yes: 3 seconds count continue during an interrupted dribble.
Here is the correction from the Case Book, page 66-67:
Rule 9.7.2: Delete the last three words "or interrupted dribble" in the second to the last sentence of the ruling.
It needs to be charged: rule 9-7-1 says: "when the ball is in control of his/her team...". You DO NOT lose team control during an interrupted dribble, only player control.

Journey "inside the numbers" for an exceptional set of statistical tools and rules that can help explain the winning-or losing-ways of a Basketball team. Basketball on Paper doesn’t diagram plays or explain how players get in shape, but instead demonstrates how to interpret player and team performance.
Dean Oliver highlights general strategies for teams when they’re winning or losing, and what aspects should be the focus in either situation. He describes and quantifies the jobs of team leaders and role players, then discusses the interactions between players and how to achieve the best fit. Oliver conceptualizes the meaning of teamwork and how to quantify the value of different types of players working together. He examines historically successful NBA teams and identifies what made them so successful individual talent, a system of putting players together, or good coaching.
Oliver then uses these statistical tools and case studies to evaluate the best players in history - such as Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, and Charles Barkley - and how they contributed to their teams’ success. He does the same for some of the NBA’s "oddball" players - Manute Bol, Muggsy Bogues, and Dennis Rodman - and for the WNBA’s top players.
Basketball on Paper is unique in its incorporation of business and analytical concepts within the context of Basketball to measure the value of players in a cooperative setting.
Whether you’re looking for strategies or new ideas to throw out while watching the ballgame at a sports bar, Dean Oliver’s Basketball on Paper will give you amazing new insights into teamwork, coaching, and success.

Sunday's Reflections on Basketball Statistics:
Are the Basketball Field Goal Percentages values going down ?
Are the FG% values going down ? From the values we studied at the current eBA 128 Basketball Statistics Analysis Course, corresponding to the archives since 1988, we can see that the FG% values are declining...
Is this due to better defenses, or to players entering the league lacking shooting fundamentals ?
Maybe this had something to do with the declining efficiency and productivity ?
1 - It's a combination of both reasons mentioned: defenses are better, or at least more complex than they used to be, and teams are more willing to sacrifice shooting from some players if those players are excellent defenders. But also more and more players are entering the professional leagues lacking the fundamentals of shooting.
2 - Overall FG% is declining primarily because more 3 pointers have been taken annually: despite more attempts the overall 3 points FG% has increased.
3 - But looking at Scoring FG% ( combining 2 pointers, 3 pointers, and Free Throws ) rather than overall FG%, the European leagues has had similar Scoring FG%s of 50.3% (in 98-99) to 53.4% (in 84-85), as it was years ago.
4 - New rule changes like hand checking, had opened up offenses and also the players take more high-risk, high-reward shots, so we can't say that shooting itself is worse.

Out of Context:
The Use of the Statistics by James R. Beniger
James R. Beniger, an associate professor at USC's Annenberg School of Communications, said it's better to decide which team is the best on the field -- not through the statistics. "As a statistician, I could find statistics to prove that USC is the best team in the country, and I could just as easily find some to show that another team is," said Beniger, who holds a master's degree in statistics from California.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
About the Need for Basketball Statistics
"I think the need for statistics stems from the fact that the popular US sports are designed for the armchair fan. This probably stems from the sheer size of the country - there aren't local derbys on the same scale as as European football, and fans don't travel to away games.
I'd suggest that fans who attend US sports do so thanks to the support of those watching on TV...... .
But things are changing, and football is gaining in popularity. I don't think that the lack of statistics will be a barrier, since the US appetite for celebrity is far greater.......
The statistics is merely consequence of the cultural factors that presents the sport to an audience understands the facts but not the emotion.......
( from a discussion developed in "The Filter" about "The Beautiful Game" )

Basketball Statistics Methods & Formulas:
Similarity Scores and The MVP IBM - IBM Watson Research Center Formula
Similarity Scores are a method of comparing basketball players to other players, with the intent of discovering who the single most similar historical player is to a certain player.
This method have been used to determine career paths and projected statistics for players. The logic behind this line of thought is simple: players often follow similar career trajectories to their most similar players, so the historical similar players' performance in years after the active player's current age should be a good predictor of that active player's future production.
Similarity scores are also used extensively in many statistical forecasting programs but is not used by the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.
MVP IBM - IBM Watson Research Center is one of the newest proposals in the area of the formulas to evaluate the efficiency and productivity at Basketball. It was presented by the IBM Watson Research Center together with the Technologies Commission of the NBA. This coefficient - MVPIBM - is calculated through the following equation:
MVP IBM = [ Points Made + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks -
( Field shots Made + Personal Fouls + Turnovers ) + ( Team Wins x 10 ) ] x 250 /
[ ( Points Made + Rebounds + Assists + Turnovers + Blocks -
( Field Shots made + Personal Fouls + Turnovers ) ]
This formula, with another fields formulas, are integrated in the 2nd. exposition of the Basketball Statistics Registration eBA Course: "Statistics Formulas Revision", at eBA CLINICS ONLINE.

October Case Study Conclusion in our Basketball Statistician's Digest:
"... A missed shot comes off the rim and bounces along the floor. A2 is in a position to pick up the ball when A3 fouls B3...
• (a) before A2 can touch the ball,
• (b) as A2 touches the ball or
• (c) after A2 gains control of the ball...
What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( forced, unforced, neutral, etc...) ? ..."

Conclusion:
In (a), credit Team B with a dead-ball TEAM rebound and register the continuation of the play.
In (c), credit A2 with an individual UNDISPUTED rebound and charge A3 with a UNFORCED turnover in addition of the NEGATIVE foul made by A3 and the POSITIVE foul received by B3.
In (b), the actions of the officials will determine the ruling.
If A2 had gained control, then the foul by A3 will be a player-control NEGATIVE foul and register a POSITIVE foul received by B3.
In this case, credit A2 with an individual UNDISPUTED rebound and charge A3 with an UNFORCED turnover.
If A2 had not gained control, then the foul by A3 will not be a player-control foul, therefore register a NEUTRAL foul made by A3, a POSITIVE foul received by B3 and credit Team B with a dead-ball TEAM rebound.
This Case Study was presented as every first day of each month, on September 1st., 2009 in our eBA Portal : were sent 723 answers, and 18 totally right, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.
was awarded to those who submitted the correct answers !

There is only one writer on the planet who possesses enough basketball knowledge and passion to write the definitive book on the NBA... more to the point, he's the only one crazy enough to try to pull it off...
Bill Simmons, the from-the-womb hoops addict known to millions as ESPN.com's Sports Guy, is that writer. And The Book of Basketball is that book.
Nowhere in the roundball universe will you find another single volume that covers as much in such depth as this wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining look at the past, present, and future of pro basketball.
From the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time, Simmons opens-and then closes, once and for all-every major pro basketball debate.
Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons's one-of-a-kind, five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball.
And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball.
Comprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), The Book of Basketball offers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game's finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler.

Friday Press Clippings:
NBA dives headlong into new era of statistical analysis
From NBA.com
By John Schuhmann
Download source here: ' NBA dives headlong into new era of statistical analysis '
"... For teams, there are several uses for such statistical analysis: Scouting for the Draft, evaluating potential trade or free-agent acquisitions and preparing for your next opponent. Not to mention evaluating your own team's strengths and weaknesses. ..." "... The latest development in basketball analytics was among the many topics that were discussed at this week's Board of Governors meetings in Manhattan. |
The league's owners watched a presentation of a new data warehouse tool called StatsCube, which the NBA has been developing over the last few years and which is now available to every team.
StatsCube has in it every point, rebound, assist, steal, block, turnover, missed shot, foul and substitution since the 1996-97 season, when play-by-play data first started being tracked courtside. The point in the game when each occurred, and what players were on the floor at the time, is recorded. Best of all, StatsCube can slice and dice the data so teams can analyze it instantaneously. ...."
"... Of course, there's still a limited amount of information available through play-by-play data. We know that Ray Allen made an 18-foot jumper and that Rajon Rondo passed him the ball, but we don't know if Allen was wide open or closely guarded. Did Vince Carter get caught up in a Kendrick Perkins screen, or was he helping out on a Kevin Garnett roll to the basket? And was Jameer Nelson putting enough pressure on Rondo up top? ..."
"... "Data is great," said Barr. "It's very powerful and the value that teams get out of it is growing, but at the end of the day, professional coaches, scouts and GMs want to see the video to verify that what the stats seem to be telling them is really telling them.
You want to do that final verification to make sure that your conclusions are valid." ..."
"... In the end, the best way to gain knowledge about players and teams is to combine every tool available. Coaches -- or fans -- might start at basketball-reference.com to determine if a team is strong or weak on either side of the ball.
They can then go to 82games.com to quickly see if they're better or worse with a particular player on the floor. Teams can run a query through StatsCube. And then they can check out the video on Synergy Sports. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
Points per Field Goal Attempt Formula: Concept & Application
In order to measure how strictly correctly a player or team is shooting we need statistics, and if possible a creative analysis of those basketball statistics.
Statisticians most often use the field goal percentage ( FG% ) to do it, but the added bonus of the three-point shot, for instance, isn't reflected in field goal percentage, and the ability to get to the free-throw line (where the points come much easier) is ignored as well.
"Points per Shot Attempt" (PSA): It's a stat designed to reflect the basics of good shooting: getting the greatest number of points from the fewest number of attempts. Points per shot attempt is simply points divided by shot attempts . Figuring shot attempts is like this: Add field goal attempts plus "Up to the Line" (for 2 or 3 free-throws). In case of analysis of another team and if you can't know how many times the player or the team reached the line, use (0.4 * FTA) instead.
PSA = Points / (Up to the Line + FGA)
Last years NBA league PSA average was something around 1.039 points per shot attempt, so by averaging, by example, 1.133 points per attempt, an average team gains a full point with every ten shots.
PSA is just as handy for rating individual players as it is for teams. Occasionally a player will break into the top ten who shoots nothing but dunks, but mostly it's the long shooters who are at the top of an individual PSA list.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
What causes a ball to be Out of Bounds ? - Rule & Statistics
"... What causes a ball to be Out of Bounds ? - What are the Basketball Rule & the eBA Statistics Registration ? ..."
About the NBA Rule:
• The ball is out-of-bounds when it touches a player who is out-of-bounds or any other person, the floor, or any other object on, above or outside of a boundary or the supports or back of the backboard.
• Any ball that rebounds or passes directly behind the backboard, in either direction, from any point is considered out of bounds.
About the FIBA Rule Nr. 5:
Art. 23 Player out-of-bounds and ball out-of-bounds.
23.1 Definition
23.1.1 A player is out of bounds when any part of his body is in contact with the floor or any object other than a players, on, above or outside the boundary line.
23.1.2 The ball is out-of-bounds when it touches:
• A player or any other person who is out-of-bounds.
• The floor or any object on, above or outside the boundary line.
• The backboard supports, the back of the backboards or any object above the playing court.
23.2 Rule
23.2.1 The ball is caused to go out-of-bounds by the last player to touch or be touched by the ball before it goes out-of-bounds, even if the ball then goes out-of-bounds by touching something other than a player.
23.3.2 If the ball is out-of-bounds because of touching or being touched by a player who is on or outside the boundary line, this player causes the ball to go out-of-bounds.
23.2.3 If a player(s) move(s) to out-of-bounds or to his backcourt during a held ball, a jump ball situation occurs.
Commentary: From the said above, we understand that the rules for both NBA and FIBA are quite the same: the ball can touch edges of the backboard, however when the ball touches back of the backboard (or the supports) it is out-of-bounds.
It is important, before closing this commentary, to read the related topic about Rule 4.35.2 at "Out of bounds: with BOTH feet ?" as part of this summary.
Once in a game under NBA based rules, a player recovered a loose ball at high speed near the side line, proceeded to dribble but was losing his balance trying to stay in bounds. The player in this case put the dribble down, touched out-of-bounds briefly, and then touched the ball again only after returning to the playing court. There was no call from the refs. In U.S.-based rules, one can make an argument for that being called out-of-bounds, but one can also make the case that it was an "interrupted dribble" and thus did not meet the criteria.

About the Use of Statistics and Statistical Analysis of Basketball

I will not always understand the machinations of some of the statistical jargon, but I am hopeful that a chapter that includes an honest and fair look at what is currently being done in this arena will be an excellent addition to my manuscript. ..."
"... Basketball is a sport that does not lend itself well to that end. There is nothing more spirited than a debate between Bob Knight and another coach regarding the relative merits of defense versus other factors. It is just a game that lends itself to a lot of options as to how it is played. ..."
"... In that light, if I wanted to better grab the attention of the NBA people, I would focus more on the relative than the absolute in evaluating a player, and I would focus on "players and lineups that can win" as opposed to players that are better or worse than each other. ..." ~ Tim Russell ~ russellratings.com

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts:
The Basketball Team Rebounds ~ Concept & Statistics
What exactly comprises and means a 'team rebound' ?
In each situation a shot is taken and missed and possession may or may not change, but the rebound cannot be credited to an individual so it counts as a 'team rebound' for whichever team is awarded the ball.
A team rebound is awarded to the opponent team to the player who attempted the shot if, before the buzzer sounded, no player had gained control of the rebound.
A team rebound is awarded to the team to which the ball is awarded out of bounds or at the free throw line as a result of a missed field goal attempt or a final free throw attempt. This includes circumstances when:
- the ball goes out of bounds without any player having secured possession;
- a final free attempt from a serial misses the rim;
- the shooter commits a free throw violation in a a final free attempt from a serial;
- a loose ball foul is called immediately following a missed field goal attempt or final free throw attempt;
- a last technical foul shot missed.

Photograph: George Nikitin from Golden State of Mind
A team rebound is awarded to a team that first gains possession following a jump ball when such a jump ball immediately follows a missed field goal attempt or a final free throw attempt, before any player is credited with an individual rebound.
A team rebound is awarded following a missed shot ( either field goal or last free throw ) when a live ball becomes dead due to the expiration of a period. A team rebound is credited to the opponent team to the player who attempted that shot.
About the differences between the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System and the NBA statistician's rules, for example, are developed in the eBA Clinics, and we'll discuss them in a next message in the eBA Forums.

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
Ball against the Backboard... Can this player begin a dribble.... ?
"... A player has not yet dribbled, throws the ball against a backboard and catches it again before the ball has touched another player. ...
Can this player begin a dribble.... ? ..."
Fundamentals of the Basketball Rule=
If a player deliberately throws the ball against a backboard ( not attempting a legitimate shot for a goal ), this is considered the same as if that player has bounced the ball on the floor. If the player then touches the ball again before it has touched ( or been touched by ) another player, this is considered to be the same as a dribble.
Basketball Game Rule=
After catching the ball ( ball comes to rest in his hands ) the player in this case may shoot or pass but may not begin a new dribble.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
In case the player in this case makes a new dribble has committed a violation and we register an unforced turnover.

Unforgettable Basketball Legends:
Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man ... called Charles Barkley... ?

Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man? is the most personal and important book Charles Barkley has written.
He lays himself open here, and because he does, he brings the same straight talk out of everyone with whom he engages in his journey around America to talk about the things that matter most and are the hardest to say - things having to do with race, and money, and identity.
Why is it that we can talk about all sorts of big issues, but when the subject of race is raised, we all freeze up ?
Charles Barkley - 1991-92: his last season with the 76ers
Barkley was a great Basketball player who was never afraid to speak his mind on any number of topics. In this book, he attempts to discuss the controversial issue of race in America by interviewing 13 prominent men and women from an assortment of fields. Sports columnist and TV host Michael Wilbon (Washington Post, ESPN) has acted as editor.

Basketball Statistician Digest:
Sunday's Reflections on Statistics ~ Possession Scoring Record System
Being designed to collect as much information as possible about a game, the Possession Scoring Record System let us calculate probabilities of scoring for both teams over equal number of trials. Focusing on the player with the ball, following the ball from player to player until the ball is turned over to the opposition through a shot attempt or turnover.
Let us follow an example: team A with ball possession, can score, commit a turnover, or not get a rebound, the team B gets the ball. For each opportunity that team A get to score, team B also get a chance.
This system sees by getting an offensive rebound, this keep alive its opportunity to score rather than producing another chance. Registering in this way, possessions are same number for both teams in a game. At the same time as each team has the same 40 / 48 minutes in a game to outpoint its opponent., each team has the same approximately 85 (in 40 minutes) / 100 (in 48 minutes) possessions in a game to outpoint its opponent.
In a non-overtime game, it is possible that each team will have as two more possessions than its opponents: see the reference to “1st. and last possession” at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
As was mentioned earlier, for this schools of thought on possessions, this formula is assuming that an offensive board "continues the possession", or "keeps the possession alive". On the second school of thought, including the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, prefer to think of offensive rebounds and securing another possession. In which case total rebounds would be used instead of defensive in any possession formula.
A scoring possession is defined as a possession on which one or more points are scored. Then – and this is another topic – we define the ratio of scoring possessions to total possession as “floor percentage”. Another formulas ( see 'eBA Formulas’ ) to study about this topic are:
Team Possessions = FGA - Oreb + TO + Up to Line Made ( see the eBA System )
Team Scoring Possession = any possession on which the team scores at least 1 point
Individual Floor Percentage = the ratio of a player's scoring possessions to his total possessions
Individual Scoring Possessions = contribution to a team scoring possession through field goals, free throws, assists, and offensive rebounds.
Individual Possessions = sum of a player's scoring possessions, missed shots and free throws that are rebounded by the defense, and turnovers. ”.
This is an excerpt of a module edited at the eBA 128 - Basketball Statistics Registration about "Basketball Possessions Analysis".

"... The most additional possessions one team can have vs their opponent in a game is one. If they get the starting possession and the ending one. Whether you win or not depends whether you score more points on your possessions.
I know this is obvious, but it's important. It should drive home the point that it's not how many points your team scores or holds the other team down to. It's how efficient you score yoru points or how inefficient you make your opponent...."
"... In my final precursor, let's talk about per minute statistics vs per game statistics. I used to not be a believe in per minute stats until someone put it to me this way.
If player A played 30 minutes in game 1 and scored 20 points and put up 10 rebounds, and his backup player B played 15 minutes in game 1 and 15 and game 2 and scored 20 points and grabbed 10 boards then they both played 30 minutes and had 20/10 over that stretch. ..."
"... I think my primary fault with PER is that, in my opinion, it may overvalue rebounders and usage a bit too much.
Reboundign is important, but the problem is rebounding is based so much on scheme. It's my feeling that there are far more uncontested rebounds than uncontested dunks in the game of basketball.
Thus players who play in the right system at the right possession collect more free rebounds than anyone else is able to collect free shots or other statistics. ..."
"... There are two primary flaws for TS%. First, it doesn't factor in turnovers, so a guy who throws the ball away like crazy will have an inflated TS% relative to his real offensive efficiency.
There's some good and some bad in that, because a PG who handles the ball shouldn't have his scoring ability taken away from turnovers generated trying to pass the ball. However, a guy who's making turnovers while trying to score should. ..."
"... For example, Michael Jordan had a huge usage rate, and that's a good thing for him. He's a dominant player and the team was helped by him taking 1/3rd of his teams possessions over his career.
Zach Randolph also has a high usage rate, and that's not such a good thing for his team, because Zach Randolph doesn't have a great TS%. His career average hovers around the league averaeg of 51-52%. ..."

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Concepts: Personal Fouls eBA Analysis
With the exception of the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, why fouls are generally not even considered in evaluating and efficiency formulas by the other statistical systems ?
There is a common misconception in the other basketball statistics analysis systems, specially at the live-game statistics, and personal fouls are generally not even considered when evaluating a player's talent.
This error or "statistics myth" raised because the false concept that it is assumed everyone commits those personal fouls and they are unavoidable.
Even, a foul means a defender has been caught out of position and has damaged his team by adding to a number that could eventually lead to free possessions via the Bonus.
But the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System have a rating of personal foul made and received and qualify each one as "good", "neutral" or "bad": the rating is explained in eBA Clinics Online and discussed in the "Statistics & Statisticians Board" in the forum, which is reserved for registered members.
Something like when 2 free throws are missed the foul actually becomes a positive for the fouling team much like a steal. If only one free throw is made it becomes a tie, nothing lost or gained. When 2 out of 3 free throws are made on the average the free throws become a negative for the fouling team.
The situation in which the personal foul was committed, plays an important role in this personal fouls eBA analysis ......

Basketball Registering Stats Referred Questions
Bad Dribble - It's Turnover... but is it a Steal ?
"... A1 is dribbling when he deal with the ball inefficiently and it bounces toward B2, how we register this play ? Steal from B2 ...? but he was not the " the initiator of the action causing the turnover"... ! ..."

Photograph: Youth Basketball Tips
Fundamentals of the Statistical Registration=
To earn a steal, the defensive player should be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor.
For NCCA and FIBA the steal should be a take-away, not just a recovery and not just a forced error.
For us, according to our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, the "forced error" concept is different at all. See: eBA CLINICS ONLINE.
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration=
A1 is charged with a turnover, and meanwhile NCAA & FIBA do not credit B2 with a steal as he did not initiate the action, I suggest the following:
analyze the action by means the game video-tape and credit B2 with a steal if there was although a minimal action of the player as the cause of the turnover, on the contrary a "team steal" will be registered.

Basketball Statistician Digest:
Out-of-context ~ The Excessive Reliance on Statistics
"...In many ways, the excessive reliance on stats to assess Basketball performances is the sports-related counterpart to that gloomy analysis.
Stats dissolve all the passion, energy and dynamics of each game in abstract, numeric quantities that could easily lead one to believe that every game is just like the other.
Recent attempts to put together comprehensive statistical indexes capable of "objectively" measuring players and teams performances - to the point where we could simply check the numbers and dispense with the game themselves - are the paroxysm of Basketball positivism.

The multifaceted, rich aspects that constitute the very essence of Basketball are set aside in the name of an irrational belief in an abstract formula.
Usually the perpetrators of such heresies are guys who smugly claim that their stats clearly rebuke .
At its worst, statistical analysis of pro sports degenerate into a set of foolish statements that are at best extremely dubious and yet are treated as "scientific claims".
Grown men who should really know better dish out atrocious claims such as "Rodman produced more wins that Michael Jordan"...."

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
A Starting Point for Analyzing Basketball Statistics
From The Berkeley Electronic Press
By Justin Kubatko, Dean Oliver, Kevin Pelton, y Dan T. Rosenbaum
Download source here: ' A Starting Point for Analyzing Basketball Statistics '
ABSTRACT:
The quantitative analysis of sports is a growing branch of science and, in many ways one that has developed through non-academic and non-traditionally peer-reviewed work.
The aim of this paper is to bring to a peer-reviewed journal the generally accepted basics of the analysis of basketball, thereby providing a common starting point for future research in basketball.
The possession concept, in particular the concept of equal possessions for opponents in a game, is central to basketball analysis. Estimates of possessions have existed for approximately two decades, but the various formulas have sometimes created confusion.
We hope that by showing how most previous formulas are special cases of our more general formulation, we shed light on the relationship between possessions and various statistics.
Also, we hope that our new estimates can provide a common basis for future possession estimation. In addition to listing data sources for statistical research on basketball, we also discuss other concepts and methods, including offensive and defensive ratings, plays, per-minute statistics, pace adjustments, true shooting percentage, effective field goal percentage, rebound rates, Four Factors, plus/minus statistics, counterpart statistics, linear weights metrics, individual possession usage, individual efficiency, Pythagorean method, and Bell Curve method.
This list is not an exhaustive list of methodologies used in the field, but we believe that they provide a set of tools that fit within the possession framework and form the basis of common conversations on statistical research in basketball.

Basketball Statistician's Digest: About the Home Teams Victories Percentage
"...... The home team wins about 70 percent of the time in college basketball, and we are doing our research - at eBA-ONLINE Clinics - referred to professional Basketball, based in these numbers.
Some made researches suggest that home court is worth as much as 12 points. But this assumption maybe NOT ALWAYS valid.
In the eBA Forums, we had still discussed about the "runs", "getting hot" and the "hot hand" which truly exist playing at home.
But there are also factors besides being supported by the crowd's energy. Fans sometimes underestimate the importance of a team having to travel to a road game. When we do the study on home court advantage at the eBA Clinics, we factor in the distance traveled to play the game.
Without any doubt longer distances ( especially when crossing multiple time zones ) are equivalent to inferior results.
The basic familiarity with the arena and rhythm of the day plays a critical role too: the court dimensions are exactly the same, but after some miles traveled and a day in a hotel room, to come up to the surface only to play basketball and shot some shots in not well known environment may be really the true opponent.
The research on the importance of home court advantage is being studied in the eBA Basketball Analysis Clinic, which current 'Basketball Statistics Register Course' began on Monday 7, September 2009. ......"

Basketball Statistician's Digest: Statistics Box Score Balance Error
"... We know that a properly completed box score should balance. The sum of the total number of individual, team and dead-ball rebounds for both teams should equal the total number of missed shots ( field and free ) for both teams.
What the statistician must do if the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found ? ..."
As you says a properly completed box score should be balanced. To make this determination, the statistician should add the total number of individual, team and dead-ball rebounds for both teams. This number should equal the total number of missed shots ( field and free ) for both teams.

A better balance can be achieved if rebounds are kept according to whether they are 'offensive' or 'defensive' rebounds. This must include both team and dead-ball rebounds. In this case, the sum of Team A’s offensive rebounds and Team B’s defensive rebounds must equal the total number of missed shots by Team A. Also, the sum of Team B’s offensive rebounds and Team A’s defensive rebounds must equal the number of
missed shots by Team B.
Neither check guarantees that there are no mistakes, but they do indicate that mistakes are unlikely. If the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found, the
eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System propose the following steps which may help:
1.- Check the dead-ball rebounds. Look at the number of two-shot fouls where the first FTA was missed.
2.- Check the team rebounds. Think about whether either team was awarded the ball for a throw-in when the ball went out of bounds after a shot.
3.- If you are working with live stats, if there was a feeling during the game that an individual should have been credited with another rebound, see if that will help. With the eBA System of Post Game Video Analysis, you'll have not this problem.
4.- Go back and decide whether another dead-ball rebound should be added.
5.- If the feeling is that the error is in the individual or team rebounds but there is no idea about which one or about which player, consider adjusting the team rebounds.
These suggestions are good if you are working with live stats and also can be used if there are too many rebounds.
And look for perfection, as we work with our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.

At NAYSI.com, one of our eBA recommended Sites we can read this ABC's of Coaching and Parenting Kids Through Sports, by Jack Hutslar :
Opportunities for adults to have a positive influence on children may consume only a few hours per week in a coaching environment. This is not much in comparison to the time that parents and teachers have to influence their children to do all of the right things.
Yet, coaches are among the more influential people in the lives of children.
These ABC’s identify some of the more important traits or principles that guide us in shaping our children into proper adults through sport.
Review these selections that follow. Help your children, your students, and your players develop a better understanding of the big picture.

T is for Teach. Coaches and parents can teach the fundamental skills and strategies of any sport to their offspring.
In most cases, youngsters are able to learn what they are taught.
This applies to sport, homework, manners, chores and responsibility. Yelling and screaming at their mistakes contributes little to their acquisition of skills.
Mistakes offer teachable opportunities. Determine what they need to know and teach it to them. Break it down into smaller bites, explain it or show them what to do. Then pat them on the back when they get it and when they show good effort.
Time. The best thing to spend on your child is time. This very simple concept is at the heart of teaching and learning, not to mention good relationships between parents, children and other significant adults.
The time that coaches and teachers spend with your child is a reason why that these non-family members are so well thought of by young players. ... Read more...

Basketball Statistician Sunday's Digest:
Some reflections about the 24 Seconds Statistics
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System registers the shooting by type, zone, number of players in the play, etc. and also records the second of the shooting possession: into the 4 - 8 - 16 - 20 or 24 seconds.
The complete topic with the analysis is uploaded at the courses of the eBA ONLINE Clinics, but this synthesis clarifies the question:
On average the shots are made between the 11 and 12 seconds of the shooting clock.
A 7.6% are taken between the seconds 1 and 8/9.
In the first half of the clock: first 12 seconds, a 57.1% of the shots are taken.

In the last quarter of the clock: last 6 seconds, only a 15.1% of the shots were registered; but, nevertheless, the best field percentage is obtained in the last three seconds of the 24 seconds shooting clock.
This research is based on more than 1000 Euroleague games, analyzed from 1988 ( when it was called European Cup ), and is presented in the eBA ONLINE Clinics, which current 'Basketball Statistics Register Course' began on Monday 07, September 2009.

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
What do we even mean by basketball "advanced stats"?
From Bullets Forever
Download source here: ' Basketball Advanced Stats? The Culture of Secrecy '
"... Interest in and use of advanced stats has made a great deal of progress in both NBA fandom and in NBA organizations over the last decade. It is, however, hard to pin down where the two intersect. This is mostly because there is a culture of secrecy surrounding organizations' use of statistics.
Teams have funded development of new data and of new ways of looking at old data, but, rather than publicizing what they find, they have (understandably) sought competitive advantage by keeping their findings private and proprietary. They are essentially trade secrets..."
"... I think, at this point, "advanced stats" can mean a lot of things to different people.*** Most basically, it seems to refer to anything other than the traditional box score stats. I think of this broad range as generally falling within several major categories on the current basketball landscape:
(1) stats that are themselves byproducts of or new ways of looking at conventional, box score numbers (let's call these "composites" and "situational stats");
(2) player "stats" that require the collection and presentation of game data beyond that previously collected ("expanded stats");
(3) stats that are based on the team outcomes of what happens on the floor while individual or groups of players are on the floor ("the plus/minus family"); and
(4) a catch-all of the murky universe of other observational stats ("designer stats"). ..."
"... Related to the composites are "situational stats," which are perhaps still the things you're most likely to encounter in an NBA game broadcast.
These can get silly fast, as they are the basketball equivalent of the good old baseball "batting average in day game late inning situations after striking out earlier in the game" obscurisms. I don't mean to dismiss them entirely.
It can undoubtedly be interesting to know how players really fare on meaningful, game ending possessions, and you can find other examples like that. I have my doubts about whether front offices are using this group, but one never knows about coaches. ..."
"... Expanded stats: Calling these "advanced stats" is in some sense a reach, as many coaches have for a long time tracked their players' performance in areas beyond the box score.
These can be things as basic as tracking "hustle plays," or "hockey assists," etc. They also might include things like "rotations made/missed" or "FG attempts defensed," or any other player-specific action that you can think to keep tally of. ..."
"... I'm probably throwing far too many things into this bucket and maybe I'll need to revisit and create more categories, but, for today's purposes, I'm using this to capture every other application of quantification or statistical analysis that doesn't fit in the above categories.
Everything from Flip's tracking of the outcomes of individual pages from his playbook, to Mark Cuban's charting of the refs, to studies of whether the "hot hand" really exists, can all go here.
Basically, if there is a question you can think to ask about player or team performance or game outcomes, there are ways you can (at least try to) frame it in terms answerable by observation and statistical analysis. This has probably been the biggest breakthrough of numbers into the NBA. ..."
"... Curiously, in baseball it seems the other way around--that advanced (different from situational) stats have been embraced by front offices (in picking players) more than managerial offices (in modifying strategy). Given the difficulties in overhauling NBA rosters compared with MLB rosters, thanks to the small drafts, shallow player pools, and salary cap, it is not surprising that an NBA coach might find more immediate use for creative stats on a day-to-day basis than would an NBA GM. ..."

Basketball Statistician's Digest: September Case Study Conclusion
"... When a player commits an offensive foul but he's still able to make the basket ?
When is forced turnover and when is unforced ?
What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System? ..."

Conclusion:
eBA Basketball Statistical Registration:
If a shooter has the ball, then makes illegal contact with the defender, a charging foul, and then releases the ball, the basket if made does not counts. This concept includes ALL basketball rules and leagues.
The so called "airborne shooter" rule have been experimented by US rules, and currently NBA, WNBA and NCAA use this rule, which extends the time period of offensive player control until an airborne shooter returns to the ground after releasing the shot.
In NCAA Men's rules and FIBA, if a shooter charges an opponent after releasing the ball, the basket, if made, shall count.
If the charge is "caused" by the defender's position and action, the turnover is charged to the shooter as a "forced" one, so the steal registered to the defender. In all the other cases, in which the foul is caused by a push or a wrong action of the shooter without real intervention of the defender, the turnover charged to the shooter and the steal registered to the defender are "unforced".
Among others, this case of statistical register is being studied and analyzed in the current Basketball Creative Analysis Seminar at eBA ONLINE.
This Case Study was presented on September 2, 2009 in our eBA Portal: were sent 823 answers, and 32 totally right, that's means including all the registrations.

Mike Krzyzewski and Rick Pitino attest to the benefits college basketball coaches glean from the pro level. Now college and high school coaches can get advice from top NBA coaches in the NBA Coaches Association’s upcoming NBA Coaches Playbook (Human Kinetics, September 2008). The first of its kind, the playbook offers a collection of proven methods and strategies from the NBA’s elite coaches on maximizing player and team performance.
“Winning basketball was and still is a matter of fundamentals and details, but you also need a tough attitude in order to reach the top,” says Basketball Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson.
In NBA Coaches Playbook, 28 successful coaches offer more than 450 Xs-and-Os diagrams and expertise, including tips from Phil Jackson on the fast break, Tex Winter on the triangle offense, and Pete Carril and Eddie Jordan on the Princeton offense.
Each chapter offers technical teaching points, practice drills, tactical nuances, or game-management tools that provide a coaching edge. The book’s “special plays” section should be especially popular among coaches seeking the out-of-bounds and last-second plays that work when the game is on the line.

Basketball Statistician Sunday's Digest:
Reflections about Statistics & Statisticians

"... It is correct that we have coaches that "are not stats guys", that only trust what they see, and they think they don't need a bunch of numbers to get in the way.
Others, use stats in various ways and are many which can speak about a tendex type formula.
Most of us, being in the basketball statistics analysis theme, and specially the analysis area, begin to understand that Basketball is a difficult game to quantify, in some degree because of the way the game changes through time, and partially because of the powerful impact of teamwork, with the constant moving interaction of 12 players and the ball.
We are the same people which understand that at some level, we use the available information to better understand the game: no one stat can explain everything, so the combination of the numbers and the plays appreciation, eBA statistics analysis basis, is by this time the correct way......"
"... Now, we know that Basketball has a lot of difficult areas of quantitative information when we translate a game into statistics. For example, categories as "allowed points - from 2, 3 and PF bonus"; "offensive rebounds allowed"; "turnovers - that aren't steals" and "good and bad personal fouls" - see our complete list of statistical analysis categories here, which are included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, are not accounted in the traditional statistical methods, specially those made at live game time.
Gathering and analyzing those categories of data will give us a sort of information, for example, about how many unguarded shots - no fast breaks plays - were taken by the opponents, and how many were allowed to us. This kind of info is the correct way in evaluating defense. ..."
