Statistician's Digest: Who gets really the credit for the steal ?
When we have really a steal ? Which are the guidelines ? For example:
Player A1 from Team A bats the ball away from a player on the Team B, but finally A2 from the Team A gets possession of the ball.
Who gets the credit for the steal ? A1 or A2 ?
We are just studying this statistical category in the eBA ONLINE Basketball Statistics Clinic: the steals. Just to begin the discussion, some definitions:
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally gains control of the ball from an offensive player. This can be done by deflecting and controlling, catching, or batting (to a teammate) a pass or dribble of an offensive player. A steal may happen while the offensive player is dribbling, holding the ball, or by intercepting a pass. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.
This a classical definition. The eBA conception is given in the Basketball Statistics Analysis Course and will be applied in the answer. And now, we are prepared for this question, A1 or A2 ? ...
