Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Mirza Delibašić

Mirza Delibašić (January 9, 1954 – December 8, 2001) was a Bosnian basketball player. He was a born in Tuzla, located in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the former Yugoslavia.

Mirza Delibašić "Kindje" led his club KK Bosna Sarajevo to the Euroleague Championship in 1979. After leaving KK Bosna, Delibašić went to Spain where he along with Juan Corbalán, Wayne Brabender, Fernando Martín Espina, Dražen Petrović, and Arvydas Sabonis, is considered to be one of the best players ever to play for the "royal club" Real Madrid.

Mirza Delibašić, the sportsman of the 20th century in Bosnia and Herzegovina

En route to a place among the European greatest players, Mirza Delibašić has won everything there was to win with Yugoslavia including Olympic gold in 1980, European gold three times, World Championship gold in 1978, plus many titles in European club competitions.

In addition to having played together for their national team, Mirza Delibašić and Dražen Dalipagić have also played together for Real Madrid. Their performance in a 1981 Euroleague game vs. KK Cibona in Zagreb is only one of the many highlights of their careers.

Mirza Delibašić scored 33 and Dalipagić 30 points. The game appropriately finished with a two-on-one fastbreak with Delibašić making a behind-the-back fake pass to Dalipagić and passing by a defender for a two-handed dunk at the buzzer. Cibona fans put aside their team loss and showed their appreciation for Bosnian stars` performances with standing ovations at the end of the game.

In August 1983 He suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage and had to permanently retire from the sport he loved. He lived in Sarajevo throughout the 1992-1996 siege of the city. His final years were marked by persistent health problems due to his heavy drinking, which led to his death on December 8, 2001 in Sarajevo at the age of 47. Several thousand people attended his funeral in Sarajevo and KK Bosna renamed its arena in his honor.

In 2000, Mirza Delibašić was selected the sportsman of the 20th century in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A memorial basketball tournament is held every year in the Dvorana Mirza Delibašić. In 2007, he was enshrined in the FIBA Hall of Fame.

Statistician's Digest: Using statistics in basketball: the bar is higher

From Dan Rosenbaum NBA Blog
Download source here: 'Using statistics in basketball: the bar is higher ' By Dan T. Rosenbaum

"... Academic research, however, is pretty much on the side of statistics. Whether diagnosing patients or evaluating job candidates, human beings vastly overestimate their ability to make judgments, research shows. Numbers and analysis almost always make people better. ..."

"... The real question is whether the benefits of more data (often collected and analyzed in a more objective manner) outweighs the costs of a simplified model that necessarily ignores some aspects of reality. ..."

"... There's a sense in which basketball stats are much more related to economics than baseball stats are, which I always found a bit boring although incredibly accurate and powerful as a game predictor. Baseball is mostly about a small number of repetitive hand/eye coordination tasks, while basketball involves constant maximizing interaction between optimizing actors on the court. ..."

eBA Stats Group Marks 10 Years on the Web

Our First Year on the Web...
Ten years ago this evening, on 24 December 1998, 20:00 GMT, I pressed a really scary big button in an old 386 Computer and the eBA-Stats.com website went online for the first time. This site was the first site of the actual eBA Stats Group and from a start of hits numbered in the thousands, the site now gets almost 10 million hits a year...

The second birthday...
During 1999, the eBA-stats.com web site, which has been built as a Basketball in general and Statistics in particular labor of love, took its first steps onto the World Wide Web with the aunch of the forums, the clinics and the directories sections. ......

Our third candle...
It’s weird and unworldly to imagine the Web when we started this site. Yahoo started about 1994. Google appears just with us. Nobody worried about PageRank back then, but we were quite pleased to be listed from the first days in all the Internet Directories. Netscape 1.0 was released in December 1994, and Internet Explorer first appeared in 1995......

The fourth celebration...
The site boasted a number of online-only features: a basketball store, a forum where basketball people could post questions and answers and debate about basketball statistics analysis, and a link for readers to comment on case studies and send feedback to the editor.......

During the following years on the Web...
Though our original web page at geocities and xoom ( http://www.geocities.com/allstats/index.html ) - with the "famous" bouncing basketball... - are probably lost to the winds of time, here's a version of our page from the first years... sorry about the design !

Thanks to the Internet Archive and reliving one’s formative years, here's what the site looked like in eBA Stats 2002 and eBA Stats 2004 as well ! ......

Four years ago...

While the history of eBA-Stats is a well-covered topic throughout the site, the impact of the network age, which coincidentally began around the same time our analysis system was released, even today, year 2008, it's difficult to measure, but also something to reflect upon and celebrate in tandem with eBA's birthday: the eBA Stats Group was born !

The eBA-Stats.com® Group - Portal in eBA-Stats.com ~ Forums in eBAforums.com ~ Encyclopedia in eBAwords.com ~ Clinics in eBAclinics.com ~ Blogs in eBAblogs.com & eBA Store -
begins to become a primary source of information and services for basketball coaches at the game statistical analysis area. In these years of professional life, the eBA-Stats.com® Group became the quickest and modern road to that information

The candle number 8...
The eBA-Stats.com® site started as a one-site-10 pages labor of love, has grown beyond all expectations: today the eBA Stats Group is comprised by 5 sites and more than 15.000 pages (and still counting...) !

It is still a labour of love, and its popularity due to YOUR SUPPORT means that each month approximately four million pages are viewed !
Therefore we needed to migrate ( second time in one year...! ) to a new, best and exclusive VPS server, including a dedicated IP, which assured us a 100% uptime for the last years !

Nowadays...
Ten years later, I am taking a few moments for a deep breath and a little reflection: eBA-Stats.com® Group is one of the largest non-commercial & bilingual basketball statistics analysis group websites in the world...!

To close anyway this celebration, thanks to Yahoo,
we invite you to fun little Flash retrospective,
where Yahoo revisits 100 memorable icons and events from the
last 10 years of the web
... Enjoy !

Happy Birthday, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

eBA-Stats.com® Group wishes to everybody,
our publishers, editors and registered members,
our friends coaches participants in the courses and clinics,
our advertisers and sponsors,
our readers and thousands of daily guests,
our families, colleagues and personal friends...

( clicking here you can read it in all the languages spoken in our basketball statisticians community .... )

A Happy Birthday, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

May the season bring you joy and good cheer!

Onward ! ...

Our first ten years were about finding a voice, an audience, and a cause worth fighting for.
Please join us for what comes next.

We are together today, see you tomorrow !

...by the way, ten years ago also, on September 27 1998, Google, with three employees - Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Craig Silverstein, began life in a friend's garage...

Basketball News: Steps Forward for the FIBA Central Bureau

FIBA International Ranking
The Central Bureau of FIBA, the highest executive body of the International Basketball Federation, met at their fifth meeting of the term 2006-2010, in Geneva, Switzerland, being impressed by the quality of the presentations from China, Italy and Spain, the three candidate countries to host the FIBA World 2014.

Then the most important decisions of the meeting:

1. First FIBA World Club Championships for 2010:
The Central Bureau agreed that the first World Club Championship will be played in October, 2010 and will be an annual event with the best eight teams in the world.

Talks on this event continue and the Chinese cities of Chengdu and Nanjing have already expressed interest in playing host for this event along with other cities.

The Championship will be open for the five champions of the FIBA Area Tournaments (5 teams) and the runners-up of FIBA Europe and FIBA Americas. The last club will be invited by the hosting city (and approved by FIBA).

The 1st FIBA World Club Championship will be played in five days on the second week of October, 2010 and for a total of ten games. The winner will receive one million dollars.

2. 2009 WADA Code:
The new 2009 WADA Code (doping) was approved. FIBA Central Bureau also expressed concern at the practice and legality of the new requirements and are waiting to speak to WADA and other international federations.

FIBA Central Bureau also approved the start of testing outside competitions from 2009 onwards.

3. 2010 World Championship:
The FIBA Central Bureau received detailed reports of the World 2010 in Turkey, including a commitment of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the government together with the Federation of Turkey. The Central Bureau expressed concern about the feasibility of making the World Cup 2010 in Turkey, taking into account the aspects required to host an event as important as this.

The steps taken in the coming months will be crucial and will be monitored by FIBA.

4. Mexican Federation:
The FIBA Central Bureau acknowledged the Mexican Basketball Sports Association, chaired by Dr. Modesto Robledo Robledo, as the National Basketball Federation in Mexico.

The next meeting of the FIBA Central Bureau will be held on 23 and May 24 in Geneva, Switzerland where the host of the 2014 FIBA World Championshiop will be named.

Statistician's Digest:
A New Feature at Basketball-Statistics.com: Charting Defense

From Basketball-statistics Blog
Download source here: 'A New Feature at Basketball-Statistics.com: Charting Defense' by Jon Nichols

"... As I’ve mentioned before, there are many issues with the current stats out there intended to measure individual defense (including mine). The best way to really analyze a player is to watch the games and record your observations. ..."

"... Kobe Bryant picked up at midcourt by Ron Artest, he moves right off Gasol’s screen, room for Bryant in the lane as he goes up for the throw down! Artest gives up the bucket to Kobe, but is that really fair? What about Yao, should he have hedged the screen? Maybe Artest could have fought through or around it and stayed in front of Bryant. What about after that — shouldn’t Carl Landry have stepped in to contest Bryant’s shot or take a charge? Or was McGrady in position to step in? This is the problem with the defensive metrics available today. They mean relatively little when looking at individual plays, where every defender has a job to do, and one failure leads to the failure of the entire defense. ..."

"... Six categories will be charted: Pick and/or Roll Coverage, One-on-one, Help Defense, Turnover Attempts, Rebounds, and Leaving Open/Getting Back. Here’s a breakdown: ..."

DVD Review: Our eBA Best Seller 6 Months Ago
Basketball Skills & Drills
Lenny Wilkens Legacy Basketball Clinic Series - The Basics
By: Lenny Wilkens

DVD Description:

Basketball legend Lenny Wilkens, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach, is the engaging and expert host of this pair of instructional videos. Each tape, one focusing on skills of offense and one on skills of defense, follows a no-nonsense format: a friend of Wilkens, NBA coach Dick Helm, presents a brief lesson on a particular skill (such as specific nuances of dribbling or passing), and young athletes are shown performing the skill the way it should be done.

Then it's time for Wilkens to use his "chalkboard." The videotaped action is frozen while Wilkens draws on the screen with a "telestrator," literally highlighting particular points that require special attention. The coaches present a comprehensive set of skills, including ball handling, passing, and shooting on the offense tape, and pointers on stance, pressuring the ball, particular defensive maneuvers, and defensive rebounding on the defense tape.

The camera work is professional throughout, and a booklet that accompanies the tapes serves as both a table of contents for the tapes and a workbook, as it contains pointers on the skills covered in the video presentations. This is an excellent set of instructional tapes and would benefit any players who seriously want to improve their game.

Get in the game with Lenny Wilkens enhanced edition DVD of his classic basketball clinic series. Lenny and Dick Helm show you all you need to know to get your team to the playoffs! Legendary coach Lenny Wilkens teams up with Dick Helm to lay out the fundamentals of one of America's most dynamic and challenging sporting events: basketball.

Wilkens who holds the title as the most successful coach in the NBA (based on his impressive tally of wins) teaches beginner coaches and players how to run and read the floor handle the ball drive to the basket work with teammates and more. Includes the coach's video chalkboard. real strength is in its emphasis on teaching basketball fundamentals correctly.

Basketball Skills is an outstanding resource, potentially valuable to novice as well as experienced basketball coaches.

Statistician's Digest: Correlated Gaussian Statistics Method

We can calculate the winning percentage to points scored and allowed
using the "Correlated Gaussian Method" explained at the eBA System Area.

It is a method that relates winning percentage to points scored, points allowed, the standard deviations of points scored and allowed, and the correlation between points scored ( which can be replaced with offensive rating ) and points allowed ( which can be replaced with defensive rating ).

"Points scored" can be replaced with "offensive rating" and "points allowed" can be replaced with "defensive rating".
eBA Stats doesn't applies this method which is fully explained at the "Journal of Basketball Studies".

This method is discussed and defined too at eBA System - The Project.

About definitions and applications you can refer to the Global Basketball Encyclopedia.

Statistician's Digest: Here is the Bucks "true" winning percentage

From Bucks Diary
Download source here: Team Here is the Bucks "true" winning percentage

"... To find out, I calculated the efficiency differentials for every team the Bucks faced according to venue (home or away). I then flipped the numbers over (so that the Bucks opponents defensive numbers would be in the Bucks offensive column and vice versa). Then I took the resulting averages and ran them through the "expected winning percentage" formula I mentioned in the last post ..."

"... Now lets adjust their winning percentage to reflect that. If the Bucks were headed for a .500 season then given their schedule they should have a 0.437 winning percentage at the moment. The Bucks actual winning percentage is 0.375. Adjust that by .062 (theorizing that 0.437 is the team's actual "0.500 level" given their schedule) and you come up with a "true" winning percentage for your Milwaukee Bucks... fully adjusted for strength of schedule and road bias... of 0.438 ..."

John Stockton, a 10-time NBA All-Star
holds the NBA record for career assists with 15,806 (10.5 per game)

He holds the NBA record for the most seasons and consecutive games played with one team, and is third in total games played, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Robert Parish. Statistician's Digest:
Team Synergy Part 2: Ball Movement and Team Dynamics

From Rethinking Basketball
Download source here: Team Synergy Part 2: Ball Movement and Team Dynamics

"... After going through an amateurish statistical analysis of ball movement in the WNBA and NBA, I found that it might be valuable, but only one piece of a bigger picture.

I started out by looking at assisted field goal percentage (a/fg) and from there found a synergy statistic that seemed to have some descriptive (though not explanatory) value in terms of a team’s style of play. ..."

"... First, synergy differential doesn’t take turnovers into account and most coaches know that turnovers are extremely harmful. Second, it doesn’t take into account rebounding, something that many good teams do well – NBA and WNBA. Third there’s the problem with using assists as a means of analysis for anything – assists are assigned subjectively and are therefore inherently flawed. ..."

"... What I like most about this formula is that (as of now) it’s relatively simple to evaluate a team just looking at a box score: ..."

Basketball News:
Harlem Globetrotters and the NBA ~ Historic Strategic Agreement

The Harlem Globetrotters and the NBA reached a strategic partnership agreement by which it, the NBA, will attempt to promote the international recognition level of the Globetrotters, by working hand by hand with them.

Thus, the agreement provides the Globetrotters with the opportunity to participate this year in several acts at the upcoming 'All-Star' Event of the NBA, which will be held next February in Phoenix. The NBA also will also collaborate with the organization and structure of the Globetrotter’s events abroad.

"The Harlem Globetrotters are known around the world and synonymous with family entertainment, we are very pleased to close this collaboration agreement which we know will enhance our efforts to promote constant growth of the sport globally," said very satisfied Heudu Ueberrroth, president of Commercial Collaborations of the NBA.

No less enthusiasm showed Kurt Schneider, CEO of the Globetrotters, following the agreement. "The NBA has always been very good at finding unique ways to marry entertainment and basketball. We believe that our unique view of making basketball along with the wise, expert, and well-established infrastructure of the NBA will conceive an unbeatable combination for both sides," Schneider proudly stated.
