"Bo Ryan is not only one of the great coaches in our game, he is also one of the great personalities. I have tremendous respect for him and really enjoy his perspective on college basketball and student-athletes. He's the kind of person you could enjoy your son playing for." "Bo Ryan is one of the game's finest coaches, and he has come up the ranks the hard way, and the right way. Ryan is substance over flash, and has developed his skills and philosophy outside of the spotlight. |
Because of his success, Ryan now lives in the spotlight. Ryan is proof positive that a steadfast belief in core principles and an enduring will to compete can carry you to the top. Ryan is really talented, too, a fact that is too often overlooked. Bo Ryan is the real thing."
Jay Bilas, ESPN College Basketball Analyst
Book Description
Bo knows hoops. As a member of the exclusive 500-win club, University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan has the second highest winning percentage among active coaches (with at least 500 victories) in college basketball, second only to North Carolina's Roy Williams. Ryan's formula for success can be traced back to UW-Platteville, where he won four national championships during a memorable 15-year run punctuated by two undefeated seasons.
But there was still another hill to climb for Bo Ryan, the all-time winningest coach in Division III history.
After a short layover at UW-Milwaukee, where he coached the Panthers to their first back-to-back winning seasons in eight years, Ryan welcomed the challenge of proving himself all over again at the Big Ten level.
And it didn't take long for Ryan to make his mark with the University of Wisconsin basketball program. In his first season, he guided the Badgers to their first share of the conference title in 55 years.
Since then, Ryan has raised the bar to unprecedented heights, leading the Badgers to the four winningest seasons in school history.
Ryan's first six teams averaged 23.7 wins per season, capped by the program's first ever No. 1 national ranking and a school record 30 victories in 2006-07.
The victory record was broken the next year as the 2007-08 team finished 31-5.
Ryan's competitive fire, attention to detail and commitment to executing the fundamentals has been at the core of his success, along with his signature Swing offense. And it all serves as a valuable road map for young coaches.
In his autobiography Another Hill To Climb Ryan talks about the many people who have influenced his journey, beginning with his formative years in Chester, PA., where the 'street-smart'' Ryan nurtured his point guard mentality.
Known as a fascinating storyteller, Ryan also talks about the hurdles and the highlights that accompanied each step, and the importance of developing a plan that will transcend any level of competition.

Statistician's Digest: The Importance of Efficiency in Basketball Analysis
From Jon Nichols in NBA Draft
Download source here: NBA Draft ~ The Importance of Efficiency
"...Most people who use advanced basketball statistics would be able to tell you why it’s often more useful to look at measures of efficiency instead of number totals. For example, when looking at how good a team is at offense, it’s better to look at offensive efficiency (how many points a team scores per 100 possessions) than points per game. That’s because offensive efficiency is adjusted for pace, and since teams trade possessions back and forth, it does not really matter how quickly you score. What matters is making the most out of every possession and forcing the opposing team to waste their possessions. ..."

Basketball News: Andres Nocioni Proud about his country, Argentina
The Argentinean forward Andrés Nocioni has a solid career in the NBA playing for the Chicago Bulls, yet he feels honored for being able to play for his country, Argentina, at international tournaments.
He said in an interview that he still felt the high of winning the Bronze at the Olympic Games even though he was injured and Manu Ginobili was not able to play at their final game due to an injured foot.

Several days after obtaining the third place at the Olympic Games, where the United States captured the Gold and Spain the Silver, FIBA announced their new world ranking where it was revealed that Argentina was position at the first place in the world.
“I feel a lot of pride for being part of the team that help my country reach the first place in World Basketball in the eyes of FIBA, even more so because we are not a traditionally basketball country." Nocioni said.
FIBA rewarded Argentina for their consistency at international tournaments, having obtained second place at the 2006 World Championship in Japan, Olympic Gold at the 2004 Games in Athens and now the bronze in the last edition of the Olympic Games at Beijing.
Nocioni added "One thing is for sure: I have not played my last game with my National Basketball Team."

Statistician's Digest: Operationalizing Interestingness in Basketball
From David Sparks in The Arbitrarian
Download source here: The Arbitrarian ~ Operationalizing Interestingness
"...Obviously, there are innumerable ways to conceptualize "interestingness" in basketball--amount of interpersonal drama, perhaps, or exciting style of play--but today I'm going to present a series of different takes on interestingness, and apply these measures to the NBA. ..."
"... First, since several of the following definitions of interestingness rely on it, I want to define a very simplistic and abstracted way of predicting game outcomes. First, imagine that you have two coins, each of which has a 50% chance of landing on heads, and a 50% chance of landing on tails. What are the odds of the various possible outcomes from flipping both simultaneously? ..."
"... One final means of defining interest as we head into the 08-09 season, is potential. Every player, at any given time, has a certain level of productivity, and this level of productivity varies in generally predictable ways: usually it takes several years in the league to climb to peak productivity, which is maintained for several more years, before a decline sets in. Typically, players are their most productive in the middle of their careers--rarely do they peak in their rookie year, and even more rarely do they leave the league at the top of their game. ..."

One-on-one: Rudy Fernandez in America
"On Sunday, I'll travel to America to begin my career with the Portland Trail Blazers.
I played in my second Olympics at the Beijing Games with the Spanish and had very good displays in several contests, including a narrow title-game defeat to the United States...
I am prepared to go up against the best players in the world at club level, too." Rudy Fernandez said.
"This is a unique experience that I wanted to live,".
"Whether it goes well or not, I will have at least had the chance to experience it. To return early would not be a failure. I am prepared for that challenge." Fernandez said.

"The coach has a lot of confidence in me and wants me to be an important member in the team,".
"My aim is to play minutes."
"My mother will accompany me on my trip to America and live with me for the first two years." Rudy concluded.
Fernandez averaged 13.1 points per game in Beijing, although in Spain's toughest clashes he was far more influential.
In an overtime win over China, Fernandez had 21 points and in the semi-final against Lithuania, he poured in 18.
In the gold-medal showdown with Team USA, Fernandez made five three-pointers and finished with 22 points.

Basketball News: The rules for the FIBA 33

The National Basketball Federation of Panama (FEPABA) has announced that they are considering establishing a tournament in the capital city of that country based on the rules for the FIBA 33 just before the current year ends.
The tournament will make use of the new rules set out by FIBA for a variation of the game which consists on playing in a half court with just four players (3 players and one substitute), a referee and a couch per team. A game for this rules, will be completed in three sets of five minutes in which the teams will try to reach the goal of 33. Whoever ends up with the most wins. The game will also have three game officials at the desk and a shot clock set at 14 seconds.
This variation on the game has been approved by FIBA and it will be proposed for world class competitions and will have its debut at the first Summer Youth Olympic Game, at Singapore in 2010. 20 National Teams, both men and women, will be playing at that tournament.
If approved, FEPABA foresees that the tournament will take place this very same year anywhere from October to November. The tournament will hold games for both Men and Women divisions and will try to have representation from every corner of the Federal District and will try to move on to the national level by the summer of 2009.

Basketball News: Last Comments from Mexico and Puerto
The LNBP goes live at Mexico
After a five month break, last Wednesday was the kick off for the National Professional League of Mexico (LNBP) with three new teams for this season: Loros de Colima, Potros ITSON and Estrellas Indebasquet.
Los Loros have veteran player, center Juan Valenzuela, and prized US import players, Leroy Davis, who played at Georgia Tech, Marlo Dumont, who saw action with TCU and Byron Burnett, of the Florida International University.
Meanwhile, Potros signed Cedric Patton, who had a solid season with the Caballeros de Culiacán and also signed Joe Chapman, graduate from Marquette University with an outstanding stint in the Czech Republic's Professional basketball league, averaging 13.1 points per game.
Moreover, Estrellas de Indebasquet home town will be Mexico City, a town without a professional team since the 2005 season. The boast several local veteran players such as Rafael Sandoval and Alfonso Lopez.
José Juan Barea, the MVP
As expected, the NBA's Dallas Mavericks point guard, José Juan Barea, became the most valuable player of the 2008 edition of the Centrobasket Championship, closing the event with 111 points, 12 rebounds, and 32 assists.

“It feels very nice to have won this trophy, but it falls short to winning the championship along with your country's teammates, which was the goal and happily we were able to make it happen. We had a great rival with the US Virgin Islands, who played very well; we also fell under the heavy hand of fatigue but to our fortune, our bench was able to come on the court and give us the help we needed to finish the championship. This and the fact that everyone was effective were the key factors for our triumph”, explained Barea at a press conference.
Puerto Rico head coach, Manuel Cintrón, praised his players for their competence. “They all deserve praise for their commitment at every game, it was not easy to play these tournaments as they are very physically demanding to any team. They all did good.”, said Cintrón.

Statistician's Digest: Team & Dead-ball Rebounds Definition
A team rebound is credited to the team that is entitled to the ball for a throw-in if the ball has gone out of bounds after a missed goal but before there was player control. However, this does not include cases where the ball is out of bounds because it passes over the backboard or touches the supports or back of the backboard, the ceiling, or overhead equipment or supports, unless the ball was touched by a player after the missed goal but before the ball was out of bounds.
A dead-ball rebound is credited whenever the ball is dead after a missed goal but before it meets the conditions for an individual or team rebound. It is credited as follows:
(1) To the team that is entitled to the ball for a throw-in or a free throw.
(2) To the team that shot the ball if the ball becomes dead due to the expiration of time or if the ball was shot after the expiration of time.
(3) To the team into whose basket a defensive player tips a missed shot.
(4) To the team into whose basket an offensive player deflects a missed
shot without intent.
(5) To the team that first gains possession of the opening jump ball after a missed free throw awarded for a technical foul.
There is a distinction between team and dead-ball rebounds. There can be no team rebound unless the ball has gone out of bounds without a player first earning an individual rebound. If the ball becomes dead before it meets the requirement for either an individual or a team rebound, then a dead-ball rebound is credited.
Why we keep dead-ball rebounds at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ? Because team rebounds reflect team rebounding ability, while dead-ball rebounds do not. In national rankings, individual and team rebounds are included, but dead-ball rebounds are not. Analysis of game statistics indicates that each—team and dead-ball rebounds—accounts for about five percent of a team’s rebounds. Therefore, if dead-ball rebounds are counted as team rebounds, it could affect the possessions account and the national rankings.

Basketball News:
Argentina's Head Coach Sergio Hernandez Uncertain Future

Argentina's Head Coach for the previous three summers, Sergio Hernandez, does not know at the moment if he will continue to be the team's guide and mentor, even after returning from the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a Bronze Medal in the Games Basketball Tournament.
The thing is that his contract with the CABB (Basketball Confederation of Argentina) reached end of life at the end of the 2008 Olympic games. In an interview with Buenos Aires, Argentina, news outlet, Olé, he said that he still doesn't know whether he will continue to lead Team Argentina or not.
“The cycle has ended and there could be a contract renewal or not. But, to be completely frank, at this moment in time, that is something that is not taking a lot of space in my mind. Right now I have to lower revolutions, take some down time and let the results from Beijing take its course. This is also a time where the Confederation must analyze and decide on what they want to do.", explained Hernandez, who at the moment is also the mentor of the FIBA Americas League first edition Champion, basketball club Peñarol and before that was the driving force behind the, also Argentinean basketball club, Boca Juniors.
Hernandez came in to take the reins of the team after Rubén Magnano, who was Head Coach for the team at the 2004 Olympics at Athens, Greece, and left Team Argentina to lead basketball club Real Madrid of the ACB League in Spain. “Gonzalo Garcia, Guillermo Narvarte and Julio Lamas are first class coaches. I had the privilege of having them as assistants. I think that any of them could and would be excellent for the position of head coach for the team", said Hernandez.
