Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Pierluigi Marzorati
Pierluigi Marzorati (born September 12, 1952 in Figino Serenza) is a basketball player from Italy, who won the silver medal with his national team at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Yugoslavia turned out to be too strong for Italy in the final: the match ended 77-86.
He eventually played 278 matches for Italian national team scoring 2209 points. He won 1983 European Championship and three bronze medals at the Eurobasket 1971, Eurobasket 1975 and Eurobasket 1985.
He is considered one of the best points guards of all time in Europe.

He was one of the key players of the Pallacanestro Cantù team (which he played for from 1969 to 1991), winning 2 Italian league titles (in 1975 and 1981), 2 European Basketball Champions' Cups (in 1982 and 1983), 4 Korac Cups (in 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1991), 2 Intercontinental Cups (in 1975 and 1982) and 4 Cup Winners' Cups (in 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1981).
He first announced his retirement in 1991 after playing his whole career for Pallacanestro Cantù. He became a vice-president for the club and served in that capacity until 1996.
In July 2006 he decided, aged 54, to come back to top class competitions with Pallacanestro Cantù for the 70th anniversary of the team. On October 6, 2006, he finally appeared in an official match for Cantù, playing two minutes in Serie A league match against national champions Benetton Treviso, then won 70-69. This way, he became the first basketball player in history to have played official matches in five different decades, as well as the oldest professional basketball player to have ever taken part in an official match.
In 2007, he was enshrined in the FIBA Hall of Fame, and in 2008 Marzorati chosen as one of 50 Greatest Euroleague Contributors.

Basketball 2008 Olympic Games: The Battle of the 9 Gates
Still Enchanted by Beijing we remember today this video from May 2007, when Nike China and DMG (Dynamic Marketing Group), China’s largest independent advertising agency, organized an epic street ball tournaments to unearth the best young ballers in Beijing.
Held over three intense days, only the most Baqi of ballers made it to the final inside the walls of the Forbidden City. Preliminary games were played around the Forbidden City gates, hence the title of the tournament, 'The Battle of the 9 Gates'.
Inspiration was drawn from the capital's imperial heritage, street ball culture and the arrogant Baqi style of Beijing basketball. The campaign incorporated multi-media spanning from recruitment drives to artist-collaborations, music, videos, and post-final celebrations.

One-on-one: "We walked this far" with Yao Ming
"I am disappointed that China lost to Lithuania and missed out on the semi-finals at the Beijing Games but also I believe that the national team had played better basketball than ever before." Yao Ming said.
"I am glad, although I have regrets. Lithuania pressured us into making missing a lot of shots. Lithuania played very well. We didn't play well."
"It's unfortunate that we didn't make it to the semi-finals. We had not made it that far and reached the aim of breaking China record."

"We were determined to fight, I think that through our courage, we walked this far but we were limited by our capabilities."
"I was the flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony and did have some good moments in all of the games, including wins over Angola and Germany."
"I totally enjoyed the Olympic experience," he said. "I have been able to compete with great players and teams."
"At least we have closed the gap a little bit, we have lifted our competence." Yao concluded.

They are lead by head coach Silvio Santander. At Veracruz, they faced, on the 15th of August, the Halcones Rojos, and finally will close their exhibition tour by facing the twice champions of the LNBP, Halcones UV Xalapa.

In this engaging book about Boston's Charlestown High School basketball team, Swidey, a staff writer for the Boston Globe Magazine, explains that being part of the Charlestown program was no guarantee that a kid would become a success.... But dropping out of the program dramatically increased the odds that he wouldn't.
Head coach Jack O'Brien benefited from the team aside from its gaudy won-loss record. Unmarried and with a shattered family history, O'Brien found that the rigid team structure... offered the trappings of home. Like a concerned parent, O'Brien worked year-round to keep his kids away from the overwhelming daily wave of crime and bad influences and into the security of a college-educated future.
Swidey masterfully shows over the course of two seasons the struggle O'Brien and his players face in maintaining success on and off the court. The coach observes the lives of his two star players, Ridley Johnson and Jason Hood White, go in very different directions after they land out-of-state college scholarships.
Swidey expertly examines the slippery slope of Charlestown's success, tying it into Boston's disastrous busing scandal and an underwhelming legal system that perpetuates crime, while he builds narrative momentum and details his subjects with the touch of a skilled novelist.
This is a prodigiously reported, compulsively readable book that readers (sport fans or not) will savor.

Basketball Software:
FIBA Releases Free Software for Live Game Statistics Tracking:

FIBA announced on Thursday the launch of FIBA LiveStats, a new free-to-download computer program that allows any basketball association, club or fan to publish live results and game statistics to any website in the world from any personal computer.
"It is my pleasure to announce the release of FIBA LiveStats. This exciting new basketball software will enable anyone to capture game data and statistics in a professional way and provide printouts to teams, media representatives and organizers,” said FIBA secretary general and IOC member Patrick Baumann in a release. “The webcast functionality will allow fans the opportunity to follow basketball games online through their favourite club or organization's websites."
The software was created by SportingPulse, an Australian network that is responsible for distributing similar statistical software to several major professional sports leagues in the Oceania region. The SportingPulse network is made up of more than 4,000 leagues, 30,000 clubs, 180 teams and two million members.
"FIBA and SportingPulse are committed to bringing professional sports coverage to grassroots sports and improving the online experience for basketball players and supporters,” said SportingPulse CEO Nick Maywald in a statement. “FIBA LiveStats has already been a big hit with basketball fans. The technology allows coverage of games on all levels -- from junior games to elite championships."
In addition to FIBA LiveStats, the sports management software FIBA Organizer was launched in November 2006 to every organization within FIBA's 213 national federations.

One-on-one: A Dream Realized with Jorge Garbajosa:

"My role in the Spanish team in these Olympics Games at Beijing has changed and I accept it with all the humility and sobriety. I have to do the best I can when I am on the court. If I play 40 minutes I will give everything I have just as if I play one minute."
"The Olympics is something very special for any athlete in the world, regardless of the sport you play in. Imagine when you have not been able to play for many months. For me to be here is a dream realized. It was one of my aims. I have worked very hard. Without the support from the Spanish Basketball Federation, from my team-mates and from my new club (BC Khimki in Russia), I wouldn't have made it."
"Everybody in the Spanish team knew it was going to be hard work. We are having problems with certain types of defenses. The important thing is that we learn and get better game by game against very difficult opponents.
We have proved that we have a lot of confidence in ourselves and in our potential, but we respect all of our opponents."
"The game against Team USA is a game we are looking forward to playing just as any of the other games we have played. It's a beautiful contest because you are playing at the Olympics against a team made up of professional NBA players. But it's worth just two points as the rest of the games. We are enthusiastic about this game just we were enthusiastic about our previous games and about our future games", Jorge said after today’s 72-59 win over Germany.

Recent News: Puerto Rico's frontman, guard Carlos Arroyo in Israel
Puerto Rico's frontman, guard Carlos Arroyo, will be playing the next season, with an option to play 2 more, in Maccabi Basketball Club of Tel Aviv, Israel, after having been a fixture in the NBA for seven seasons and 5 teams.
Arroyo, as reported by the American Sporting News outlet, ESPN, will be collect 2.5 million dollars for his participation with the club in the next season of that countries professional league. His decision to move to the Europe came after the Orlando Magic decline to renew his contract. Carlos Arroyo averaged 8.4 points and 3 assists per game in two and a half seasons with them.
He returns to Europe again, as he played briefly for TAU Ceramica -4 games in just 2 months (January and February, 2002).
Arroyo's debut in the NBA was with the Toronto Raptors, left for a brief spell with TAU Ceramica, and then returned to the North American League as part of the Denver Nuggets.
Yet, it wasn't until he was part of the Utah Jazz that his name came to the spotlight as he took the big job of replacing the legendary John Stockton, as the teams point guard over the Spaniard Raül Lopez in the 2003-04 season.
After playing for the Jazz, he played for the Detroit Pistons and then arrived at the Orlando Magic in a trade, along with Darko Milicic.

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Rashard Lewis !
Rashard Quovon Lewis (born August 8, 1979 in Pineville, Louisiana) is an American professional basketball player, currently with the NBA's Orlando Magic as a small forward.
Lewis bypassed college and opted for the 1998 NBA Draft, wherein he was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics with the third pick of the second round (32nd overall). At the time of his selection, he was the last player remaining in the "green room", where 15 of the top draft prospects sit until their selection. His hometown's team, the Houston Rockets, declined to select Lewis with any of their three first-round picks and instead chose Michael Dickerson, Mirsad Türkcan and Bryce Drew, much to the disappointment of Lewis and a large majority of Rockets fans.
After playing his first nine seasons for the Seattle SuperSonics, Lewis joined the Orlando Magic, having agreed to a six-year sign-and-trade deal worth $118 million on July 11, 2007. On May 25, he had opted out of the last two years of the 7-year, $60 million deal he signed before the 2003-04 season. The final two years of his contract were worth a guaranteed $21 million.
Over his 10-year career, he holds an average of 16.8 points per game, with his career high of 22.4 points per game coming in 2006-07.

Recent News: Ginóbili praises Spain:

Manu Ginóbili said, without hesitation, that " The United States and Spain are the two favorites for the 2008 Olympic Games Basketball competition." after he was asked which teams would be Argentina’s main contenders for a medal spot at the upcoming Games at Beijing, China.
"Right now, Spain is the better team. They defeated us comfortably twice, they are confident and they hit their shots... yet there are teams such as Lithuania, Russia, Greece and ours that, at any given time, can surprise the best of the best a win them a game." continued the San Antonio star, and finished saying that "in an Olympic Competition, there are no easy games."
Ginóbili assured everyone that he felt completely recovered from his injuries (left ankle), which almost made him miss the Olympic Games altogether, more to the point, he felt well enough to hit a couple of dunks in the game against Iran (81-71) in the first game of the Diamond Ball Tournament, played at Nankín (Southern China).
"I felt recovered and could not notice any discomforts. Still, I'm not exactly into the rhythm of the team, but I am feeling excellent." he added.
Argentina's National Basketball Team will debut at the Games on the 10th of August playing against Lithuania.
