Coach's Digest: Ball between Rim & Backboard ~ Statistics & Rule
When the ball becomes lodged between the rim and the backboard the proper rule is a Jump Ball situation.
NBA & FIBA= Jump Ball at the top of the key between any two opponents.
NCAA & High School U.S.= Jump Ball which would lead to an alternating possession situation.
eBA Statistical Register=
Jump-ball: as at any situation of Jump Ball, if the same possession goes on, no registration. If the possession goes over the other team, a team turnover and a steal at Jump Ball will be registered for the respective teams.
Alternating Possession Situation: if the arrow points the team at defense, we register a missed shot for the throwing player and team rebound for the defender team. If the arrow points the offensive team, the play goes on without stats reference at all.
Ball Lodged at end of period= As time is running out in the quarter, a shooter attempts a try for a field goal. Time expires and the horn sounds while the shot is in the air. The ball lodges between the rim and the backboard.
Rule 5 clearly states that a period ends when the horn sounds indicating that time has expired, except if a ball is in flight during a try or a tap. The period ended when the try was unsuccessful or when the ball lodged between the ring and the backboard. The kicker in this situation is that no penalty or part of a penalty may be carried over to another period, or extra period. So you just start the next period with the alternating possession procedure, or if it's and extra period, a jump ball. NFHS 5-6-1, 5-6-3

One-on-one: Operation Gold with Andrés Nocioni:

Andrés Nocioni, the Argentinean forward to the Chicago Bulls, said that his National Team will go to the 2008 Olympic Games at Beijing, China, with the desire to revalidate the position obtained in last games, that of the Gold Medal, at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
"We want the Gold in China and we will do everything needed to get it. We have a team that can easily position itself among the top 4. Even though what we really want to win the Gold, winning one of the medals would also be good.", he said in a press interview with the Argentinean news outlet 'Olé'.
Yet, “Chapu” knows that they need to "overcome some small problems" to manage the revalidation of the Gold Medal. "You have been watching the opposition, you think about Lithuania and Russia as the strongest rivals or the team that wins the FIBA World Qualifying Tournament. Then you have to think about getting the best possible position in order to get a favorable cross in the quarterfinals" , he noted about the rivals that they will have to face in the preliminary phase of the Games.
Moreover, the Tau Cerámica ex-player believes that the other National Teams respect the Argentinean Team. "They respected us at Athens. I think it will be very difficult to obtain something... they know us. All in all, this tournament will be a very tough challenge", he said.

Germany win over Puerto Rico and reaches Olympics
Germany beat Puerto Rico 96-82 on Sunday in the last game of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament to claim the final place on offer for the Beijing Games.
Dirk Nowitzki had 32 points and nine rebounds for the Germans, who also got a sensational effort from point guard Steffen Hamann.
Puerto Rico, who caused the biggest shock of the 2004 Olympics when they upset the United States on opening day, will now have to watch as six teams from Europe and only two from the FIBA Americas - Team USA and Argentina - go to Beijing.

Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Stojan "Stojko" Vranković
Stojan "Stojko" Vranković (born January 22, 1964, in Drniš, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia) is a retired Croatian basketball player.
A 7 ft 2 in (2.18 m) center, he played 5 seasons (1990–1992; 1996–1999) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Los Angeles Clippers. He was very popular in Europe while playing for Athens-based Panathinaikos and winning the club's first Euroleague Championship.

Vranković earned a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics Basketball Tournament with the Yugoslavia national basketball team. But his most memorable moment was in the following 1992 Olympic Games with his then newly-independent Croatia national team, winning silver in the men's final against the American "Dream Team".

Basketball News: New Salary Cap for the NBA:
The NBA has released their new salary caps for teams and players which will enter into effect immediately and will hold sway of the franchises for the next season.
Each team will be allowed to expend a total of $58.68 million dollars in player salaries, an established limit that will be enforced immediately and will allow basketball clubs to vie, if they want to, for the most desired free agents in the market.
Moreover, it was also established that the total expenses for a team will also be capped but at the $71.150 million dollar limit. In the event that any of these two caps is exceeded, then the famous luxury tax will kick in, which essentially will charge dollar per dollar for going over said limit.

Basketball News: 'Basketball Without Borders Asia':

The 'Basketball Without Borders Asia' camp, witnessing renowned FIBA/NBA players and coaches guiding Asian talents, concluded in New Dehli, India, on 6th July.
The four-day under-19 camp represented the first ever occasion that this successful joint FIBA-NBA program took place in India and counted with the participation of 50 budding basketball players from 15 countries, including five representatives from India.
'Basketball Without Borders Asia', organized by FIBA and the NBA in cooperation with the Basketball Federation of India, proved to be a huge boost to the trainees who had their skills sharpened by top FIBA/NBA coaches like Don Casey, Dave Hopla and Sam Perkins and current/former stars such as Pat Garrity Kyle Korver, Linton Johnson, Ronny Turiaf and Dominique Wilkins. In addition, Basketball without Borders campers also attend daily life skills seminars focusing on HIV/AIDS education and prevention.
In addition, on 4th July a visit to the Sahara Center for Residential Care and Rehabilitation by the players and coaches took place.
The Sahara Center provides services, treatment and counseling to HIV/AIDS infected people and women who have been rescued from domestic abuse or the sex trade.
The players visited the facility, spent time with the residents and presented a donation of health equipment, hygiene products and clothing.
The program in the Indian capital coincided with the visit of FIBA President Bob Elphinston and FIBA Secretary General and IOC member Patrick Baumann.

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Pau Gasol !
Pau Gasol Sáez (born July 6, 1980 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain) is a 2.13 m (7 ft.) Spanish professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born to Marisa Sáez and Agustí Gasol, and he spent his childhood growing up in Spain. Gasol also has two brothers; Marc Gasol, who like Pau, is a professional basketball player, and Adrià Gasol.

Gasol was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2001 NBA Draft, but his rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, with whom he played seven seasons. He currently holds the Memphis Grizzlies franchise records for career games played, minutes played, field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, offensive, defensive, and total rebounds, blocked shots, turnovers, and points. On February 1, 2008, Gasol was traded to the Lakers, and a USA Today article said he was "the major factor in turning around a storied NBA franchise and making it hip to be a Lakers fan again."
