Statistician's Digest: When a Shooting Foul is called ? - Statistics Registration
(First part of this post was edited yesterday)
The referee must call a foul on B1 and award two shots to A1, as he was in the act of shooting when the contact happened, on the contrary it would penalise the shooter because he was smart enough to try and continue playing. The fact that he eventually passed the ball is really of no consequence.
Every time the official judges that the player is making a continuous attempt for goal, they get shots, no matter how early in the drive the contact occurs, no matter in the drive is completed or no.
The eBA statistics registration is simple: a made foul and a received foul and the result of the free throws, simply. If there was a pass before the action, it would be considered an assist with foul. See in the forum Stats the posts about basketball assists.

Statistician's Digest: When a Shooting Foul is called ?
The concept that the player must make a throwing motion in order for it to be a shooting foul seems to convey no meaning. The player must intend to do so, but if contact prevents the completion of the shot, it can still be a shooting foul.
An example about this concept: A1 is a few feet away from the basket, facing the side of the backboard. When A1 starts what appears to be a try for a goal, he is in front of the backboard and well positioned to score. B1 illegally bumps A1 while A1 is airborne, moving A1 to a position where he is now behind the backboard. A1 (still airborne) now realises that a shot is impossible from behind the backboard, so he passes the ball to A2, who is standing near the free throw line.

Basketball News: FIBA Plans Club World Championship
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has plans to create a world club championship, the Japan Basketball Association (JBA) said on Wednesday.
The JBA said after a board meeting that the tournament would pit the champions of the five member continents against the winner of the NBA title to determine the best team in the world.
According to the JBA, the tournament would include 16 teams: the top four clubs each from Europe and the Americas, and the top two teams from Africa, Asia and Oceania, respectively.
The JBA said that for the event to become a reality, FIBA officials would still have to iron out details of the tournament such as coordinating the scheduling with the NBA.

Forum's Digest: 'Points-in-the-paint' and 'Winning Games'
"... Talking about positions, did the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis a research to establish a correlation between the statistical category 'points-in-the-paint' and 'winning games' in basketball ? ..."
Surely, you keep listening game analysts talk about how certain teams protect the paint better than others or how another team has a weak inside presence.
Is it acceptable to say that your team have to be tops offensively and defensively to be considered a championship aspirant.
Close shots are the highest FG% shots so it is important, and 3pt shooting is the next best type shot.
Being tops offensively and defensively helped a lot of champions, but maybe "inside points" differential would be better measure for teams in general than the two parts individually, as your team could be above average but not spectacular on offense and above average on defense in addition.
Therefore, in an ideal manner your team would need inside/outside attack combo and as strong as possible differentials on each.

Statisticians: Offensive Efficiency - the Formula
The Off Eff - offensive efficiency is calculated by means this formula:
Off Eff= 100 * (Tm PTS / Tm Poss)
Offensive efficiency is an estimate of the number of points scored per 100 possessions. You can find additional information in my article "Basketball Evaluation Formulas Revision" and in our "Basketball Global Encyclopedia". This formula and its applicability is analyzed in my exposition about "Possessions in Basketball" in the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinics.

Forum's Digest: Goaltending on Final Free-throw Attempt
"... B1 commits goaltending on A2's final free-throw attempt. Which is the statistical register for B1 ? Unforced Turnover ? Or we only register a free throw made for A2 ? ..."
The free-throw counts as good and the official calls a technical foul against B1.
eBA Statistical Registration=
- Score the free throw for A2;
- Charge B1 with Unforced Turnover Technical Foul;
Team A shoot two free throws for the technical foul.
A new possession begins for team A when the play is resumed with a throw-in at the division line opposite the scorer's table.

The eBA DVD Best Seller Six Months Ago:
"2006-2007 NBA Champions - San Antonio Spurs (2007)"
Starring: Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli and Gregg Popovich

1 Disc Set ~ 104 Minutes Long ~ Studio: Warner Home Video - Release Date: July 17, 2007
This 2007 DVD does have some good bonus features and the main featured video is excellent. Unfortunately, the 2007 DVD doesn't have the entire fourth quarter broadcast for each Spurs close out game for every round. However, the bonus features are plentiful and well done. The main video (featuring the recap of the season) is also very good. It is over an hour long:
* The series against the Jazz was only a footnote. The Spurs didn't sweep them, they were blown out in game 3, and there were two ejections.
* They placed too much emphasis on Tony Parker in the finals. Yes, he was the MVP and he deserved it. Ginobili was shut out in game 3 (excluding foul shots), his performance rivaled Parker's in game 4 and his final run and foul shots guaranteed the Spurs win.
* They included highlights from the last two championships.
The best Spurs championship DVD they could make would include every playoff game in full, but that's unrealistic.
Therefore, this is definitely the best thing though about 2007 Spurs Champions ! .

Statisticians: The Magic Metric Formula
The Magic Metric uses a linear formula that is designed to account for the relative contribution of all basketball player.
The MM is based on a mathematical analysis in which 11 equations are used to solve for eleven unknowns.
Magic Metric Formula:
1.8 * FG2 + .9 * FTM + 3 * FG3 + .65 * REB + .9 * AST + .8 * BLK + STL
- .65 * MFG - .5 * MFT - TOV
FG2: Field Goals for 2
FTM: Free Throws Made
FG3: Field Goals for 3
REB: Rebounds
BLK: Blocks
STL: Steals
MFG: Missed Field Goals
MFT: Missed Free Throws
TOV: Turnovers
In another occasion I'll explain largely why this formula is not included in our eBa Basketball Statistics Analysis System. More information at magicmetric.com.

Forum's Digest: College Basketball Team Stats
"... How do you decipher the following college basketball team stats ?
Team Example: (24-2, 16-1 Pac-21) ..."
When given in this format, the first set of numbers is overall wins - overall losses, in this case 24-2. Following in the example is conference record given as conference wins-conference losses with a designation of which of the 31 conferences the team is in, in this case the 'team example' record in their conference is 16-1 and the conference is Pacific #21.
Also given sometimes is the home, road, or neutral site record of the team (depending on where the game is being played). As with the other two, the general format is wins-losses. Thus, if the team above was playing its next game on the road, it could read as (24-2, 16-1 Pac-10, 12-1 road).

Books Review: Statistics: A Spectator Sport
Statistics: A Spectator Sport
By: Richard M. Jaeger
Jaeger's book is the standard bearer to the "Statistical Revolution." That is, Statistics made fun and easy. The drudgery of laboring over ponderous Statistics books is gone!
Jaeger's book is an absolute must for those people who simply want to understand statistics; as they appear in various business and government reports, polls, and professional research papers. Jaeger proves that you don't have to fill your head with a bunch of equations and Greek letters to understand and appreciate the beauty of statistics. In reality, as Jaeger so expertly points out, Statistics is a straight forward subject that has been misused, abused, and poorly taught throughout the ages.
This book does not teach you how to compute statistics. Why should it? Any electronic spreadsheet worth its salt can calculate the most cumbersome of equations with a single key stroke! Therefore, unlike other books on statistics, this book contains absolutely no equations and a minimum of Greek letters.
This book's primary focus is on teaching the "user" of statistical information what statistics are, what they mean, and how to use and interpret them appropriately.
The first six chapters in this book focus on descriptive statistics -- such as the measures of central tendency, graphical and tabular presentation of data, disbursement of data about the mean (standard deviation and range), and other similar topics. Chapters 7 through 14 discuss inferential statistics -- such as analysis of variance and hypothesis testing. Chapter 15 addresses advanced topics, such as regression models and forecasting.
If you want to be a "producer" of statistics, then this is not the book for you -- look elsewhere! However, if you are in a position where you are presented statistical data to help you make an informed decision, then; by all means, buy this book immediately.
This book is ideal for managers in private industry and government agencies who live and die by statistical data -- such as people supervising production, training, quality control, or a method improvement / efficiency cell. This book is also good for military leaders to help them understand and discuss the statistics presented in readiness issues, mobilization topics, and unit readiness.
I strongly recommend this book. As a matter of fact, this book will make great reading to accompany the Standard Deviants tapes on statistics.

Statistician's Digest: Home Teams Winning Percentage
"... Home teams may be, typically, better than away teams. Looking at home-away games during the first half of the season, the game trends indicates home teams often outmatch away teams.
This indicates that in the first half of the season, home teams are in a general and inherent manner stronger than away teams, in a relation of 70-75% of winning percentage.
During the second half, this difference related to the home teams is matched and home and away teams winning percentage are equals to the same degree. This reality brings to the conclusion that winning percentage of home teams concurrently goes down during this time.
Why this difference between the two halves of the season ? ..."

Rules Corner: Ending Dribble with Both Feet Off:
Both feet off of the floor ? Last season this case was officiated well and consistently; consequently, it removed existing confusion as to what was legal. This year there appears to be an inconsistent understanding of Rule 4-65.3 and as a consequence, the rule is not being officiated correctly. As a reminder, when a dribbling player initiates a jump, ends his dribble with both feet off the floor and lands simultaneously on two feet (jump stop), he is permitted to establish a pivot foot. When there is doubt as to how many feet were off the floor when the dribble ended, the official shall assume that the dribble ended with both feet off the floor (which is most often the case); consequently, the player, after executing the jump stop, is allowed to establish a pivot foot. When the official does not allow the player to pivot after a jump stop, he shall be absolutely sure that player ended his dribble with only one foot off the floor.

Statistician's Digest: Statistics affecting Winning Percentage
Traditional statistics in real time team-works, use excessively the option "Team Player"; because of lack of time to determine which player caused the opponent TO, or because of lack of knowledge about the game.
Traveling or a bad control outside ball of an opponent, are immediately registered as a TO by the stats men during a game. But the Steal of our player causing directly the walking or the outside ball by executing, for example, a good double team defense or a quick footwork, not always is registered...
After years of trying to find out how certain basketball statistics ( Field Goals; Free Throws; Personal Fouls; Turnovers; 3 Pointers; Blocks and Steals ) affect winning percentage for a basketball team, our conclusion is that while a rise in each stat have some affect in the rise or fall of winning percentage, we could not determine a single stat that had a direct affect on the dependent variable: the Winning Percentage. So our results are more effective when we run the system on how the combination of all stats affected winning percentage, however this would be obvious given the nature of our study: the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.

Forum's Digest: Statistics never tell the WHOLE story
"... If a basketball game were decided as if it were a trial - in court - then statistics would be the evidence that each side would use to make its case. Points scored, of course, is the single most important piece of evidence, but other stats, as assists, rebounds, and turnovers, usually offer convincing proof as to which team outplayed the other - and won the game. ..."

Coach's Corner: Bob Knight Resigns... goodbye Bobby !
After 902 career wins, more than any coach in the history of NCAA Division I men's basketball, Bob Knight resigned yesterday as coach at Texas Tech and leaves basketball !
Coach Knight has had a great career. His coaching record speaks for itself. His love for basketball is clear, but most importantly his love for teaching and the students has been a hallmark of his tenure at Texas Tech.

The 67-year-old Knight has been a head coach for 42 years at three Division I schools. His first NCAA title came in 1976 when Indiana went undefeated, a feat no team has done since. In 1984, he coached the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in Los Angeles.
Knight, known as much for his fiery temper as his coaching brilliance, came to Texas Tech in March 2001.
Knight won 880 or more games in 29 seasons at the three schools.

Basketball Statistician's Digest: Individual and Team Stops
"... Can somebody please explain what is referred the 'STOP STATISTICS' ? ..."
Stops are a a coordinated sequence of individual stops and assistance provided to team stops.
Individual stops are steals, blocks and defensive rebounds. Blocks and defensive rebounds are weighted against each other.
Team stops are based on the three stats mentioned, plus field goals and free throws defensed, and forced turnovers. Players get credit here based on their minutes played.
Individual and team stops are just added together.
The formula of 'Stops' is discussed in the Features & Statistics Forum.

Statistician's Digest: FTA & PF at Season & Playoffs
"... Are there at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System Archives any statistical record of FTA and Personal Fouls inconsistencies during regular season games and playoff games ?
My real question is at what point does the deviation between fouls called on two teams become statistically outside the domain of convention ?
In like manner, is there a point where the difference with some standard measurements becomes so great that it is so statistically improbable that it is an indicator of a game refereed clearly in the favor of one team ?
This is a good topic when the media is demanding an unfairly behaviour of certain basketball officials... "
Applying the information available from box scores, with the crew of 3 officials included, using 18 years quality of data, we found nothing at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System Archives. No individual official, as a factor in the crew of 3 model, had an important effect on the number of FTA and Personal Fouls in a game.
Some other numbers seem to link fouls called to single officials, rather than the crew of 3 officials we had to use in our model. Concentrating on single officials would make bigger the power of any analysis, for sure, but I still consider unlikely that the results would be statistically significant.
