The 2007-2008 Kansas Jayhawks capped off one of the program's most storied seasons by winning its fifth national championship, and first in 20 years. The Jayhawks success in 2007-2008 has been credited to total team effort and the inspiring leadership of head coach Bill Self.
During his relatively short head coaching career, Self has established himself as one of college basketball's best by leading Oral Roberts to new frontiers, guiding Tulsa to its best season in school history, turning Illinois into a Big Ten powerhouse and now taking Kansas from a perennially great program to the best in the nation.
In Bill Self's first authorized book: BILL SELF: At Home in the Phog, Self and those who know him best offer an inside look at his journey into becoming one of the game's most respected and most sought-after coaches. Self explains how he is living a dream - not only is he a head coach, but he was selected to be the steward of what James Naismith and Phog Allen created. He describes the excitement of reaching the pinnacle - leading the Jayhawks to a national title.
He gives minute-by-minute details of the contest that sent KU to the national title game. Self has achieved his dream of becoming a head coach. That much is evident. Even though he never dreamed of being the head coach at the University of Kansas, he did aspire to lead a college basketball team to greatness, which is exactly what he is doing. Self's journey proves that even though dreams may change, they can come true.
About the Author
In the storied history of Kansas basketball, no coach has a higher career winning percentage at the school than Bill Self. In 2008,
in his first trip to the Final Four, Self claimed the national title. He now boasts a 142-32 (.816) record in five years at Kansas and a 349-137 (.718) mark in 15 seasons as a Division I coach.
Self has been to 10 straight NCAA tournaments and advanced to the Elite Eight five times in that span, while directing three different programs. His Kansas teams have won four straight Big 12 regular-season titles and three straight Big 12 Tournament crowns.
In the decade leading up to the national championship, Self has finished first eight times in three different leagues.
The other two seasons, his teams finished as conference runner-up. A former player (1981-1985) and assistant coach (1986-1993) at Oklahoma State, Self was head coach at Oral Roberts (1993-1997), Tulsa (1997-2000) and Illinois (2000-2003) before arriving at Kansas
in April 2003. Self and wife Cindy have a daughter, Lauren, and son, Tyler.

Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Mirza Delibašić
Mirza Delibašić (January 9, 1954 – December 8, 2001) was a Bosnian basketball player. He was a born in Tuzla, located in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the former Yugoslavia.
Mirza Delibašić "Kindje" led his club KK Bosna Sarajevo to the Euroleague Championship in 1979. After leaving KK Bosna, Delibašić went to Spain where he along with Juan Corbalán, Wayne Brabender, Fernando Martín Espina, Dražen Petrović, and Arvydas Sabonis, is considered to be one of the best players ever to play for the "royal club" Real Madrid.

Mirza Delibašić, the sportsman of the 20th century in Bosnia and Herzegovina
En route to a place among the European greatest players, Mirza Delibašić has won everything there was to win with Yugoslavia including Olympic gold in 1980, European gold three times, World Championship gold in 1978, plus many titles in European club competitions.
In addition to having played together for their national team, Mirza Delibašić and Dražen Dalipagić have also played together for Real Madrid. Their performance in a 1981 Euroleague game vs. KK Cibona in Zagreb is only one of the many highlights of their careers.
Mirza Delibašić scored 33 and Dalipagić 30 points. The game appropriately finished with a two-on-one fastbreak with Delibašić making a behind-the-back fake pass to Dalipagić and passing by a defender for a two-handed dunk at the buzzer. Cibona fans put aside their team loss and showed their appreciation for Bosnian stars` performances with standing ovations at the end of the game.
In August 1983 He suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage and had to permanently retire from the sport he loved. He lived in Sarajevo throughout the 1992-1996 siege of the city. His final years were marked by persistent health problems due to his heavy drinking, which led to his death on December 8, 2001 in Sarajevo at the age of 47. Several thousand people attended his funeral in Sarajevo and KK Bosna renamed its arena in his honor.
In 2000, Mirza Delibašić was selected the sportsman of the 20th century in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A memorial basketball tournament is held every year in the Dvorana Mirza Delibašić. In 2007, he was enshrined in the FIBA Hall of Fame.

Statistician's Digest: Additional Comments about the Prouty Rating
The Prouty rating is a simple, yet effective, method of rating players which is based on averaging four areas: 'Offensive Efficiency', 'Total Offense', 'Possessions' and 'Win Rating'.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System relates this rating but does not applies it.
The various individual parts of the Prouty rating, you can read the formula in my post here: Basketball Statistical Formulas: The Prouty Rating, are based on a per minute basis and if you study the formula in the eBA Basketball Statistics Register Clinic, you'll see that there are four main sections. The Offensive Efficiency ( how many points you score per shot ), Points Per Minute ( how many points you score or help others score per minute ), Possessions Per Minute ( how many possessions you gain or lose your team per minute ) and Win Effect ( how responsible you are to your team's win percentage, based on minutes per game ).

Statistician's Digest: Using statistics in basketball: the bar is higher
From Dan Rosenbaum NBA Blog
Download source here: 'Using statistics in basketball: the bar is higher ' By Dan T. Rosenbaum
"... Academic research, however, is pretty much on the side of statistics. Whether diagnosing patients or evaluating job candidates, human beings vastly overestimate their ability to make judgments, research shows. Numbers and analysis almost always make people better. ..."
"... The real question is whether the benefits of more data (often collected and analyzed in a more objective manner) outweighs the costs of a simplified model that necessarily ignores some aspects of reality. ..."
"... There's a sense in which basketball stats are much more related to economics than baseball stats are, which I always found a bit boring although incredibly accurate and powerful as a game predictor. Statistician's Digest: Matchup Probabilities ~ Applicability & Formula
Raymond Cheong designed a computer ranking system (CRS) - see it at
www bme.jhu.edu/ - to predict the outcome of a hypothetical matchup between two basketball teams. The CRS relies on the observation that average score margin is highly correlated to the ability to win, but that average score margin can be adjusted for strength of schedule and random variations in day-to-day ability.
The CRS gives the expected score difference in a hypothetical matchup, and assuming Gaussian variation in day-to-day ability, gives a closed formula for the probability one team will defeat another. This system could be easily adjusted for other sports, but is particularly suited for NCAA Division I men’s basketball because of the large number of games played and the finely graded scores.
The two-thirds winning record of home teams is often cited as evidence that a home court advantage exists. However, the HCA controlled for differences in home and away team abilities is zero. This is partially accounted for by the trend that strong teams invite weak teams in the first half of the season to warm up for conference play.
On the other hand, the Home Court Advantage calculated from paired home-away games is 3-4 points, suggesting the HCA is real. Raymond Cheong currently do not have a satisfying explanation for the discrepancies between these analyses.
On balance, this evidence neither confirms nor denies that the HCA exists, but at minimum that if an HCA is included in a CRS the way it is calculated must be carefully evaluated - see www bme.jhu.edu/ -.

Our First Year on the Web...
Ten years ago this evening, on 24 December 1998, 20:00 GMT, I pressed a really scary big button in an old 386 Computer and the eBA-Stats.com website went online for the first time. This site was the first site of the actual eBA Stats Group and from a start of hits numbered in the thousands, the site now gets almost 10 million hits a year...
The second birthday...
During 1999, the eBA-stats.com web site, which has been built as a Basketball in general and Statistics in particular labor of love, took its first steps onto the World Wide Web with the aunch of the forums, the clinics and the directories sections. ......
Our third candle...
It’s weird and unworldly to imagine the Web when we started this site. Yahoo started about 1994. Google appears just with us. Nobody worried about PageRank back then, but we were quite pleased to be listed from the first days in all the Internet Directories. Netscape 1.0 was released in December 1994, and Internet Explorer first appeared in 1995......
The fourth celebration...
The site boasted a number of online-only features: a basketball store, a forum where basketball people could post questions and answers and debate about basketball statistics analysis, and a link for readers to comment on case studies and send feedback to the editor.......
During the following years on the Web...
Though our original web page at geocities and xoom ( http://www.geocities.com/allstats/index.html ) - with the "famous" bouncing basketball... - are probably lost to the winds of time, here's a version of our page from the first years... sorry about the design !
Thanks to the Internet Archive and reliving one’s formative years, here's what the site looked like in eBA Stats 2002 and eBA Stats 2004 as well ! ......
Four years ago...
While the history of eBA-Stats is a well-covered topic throughout the site, the impact of the network age, which coincidentally began around the same time our analysis system was released, even today, year 2008, it's difficult to measure, but also something to reflect upon and celebrate in tandem with eBA's birthday: the eBA Stats Group was born !
The eBA-Stats.com® Group - Portal in eBA-Stats.com ~ Forums in eBAforums.com ~ Encyclopedia in eBAwords.com ~ Clinics in eBAclinics.com ~ Blogs in eBAblogs.com & eBA Store -
begins to become a primary source of information and services for basketball coaches at the game statistical analysis area. In these years of professional life, the eBA-Stats.com® Group became the quickest and modern road to that information
The candle number 8...
The eBA-Stats.com® site started as a one-site-10 pages labor of love, has grown beyond all expectations: today the eBA Stats Group is comprised by 5 sites and more than 15.000 pages (and still counting...) !
It is still a labour of love, and its popularity due to YOUR SUPPORT means that each month approximately four million pages are viewed !
Therefore we needed to migrate ( second time in one year...! ) to a new, best and exclusive VPS server, including a dedicated IP, which assured us a 100% uptime for the last years !
Nowadays...
Ten years later, I am taking a few moments for a deep breath and a little reflection: eBA-Stats.com® Group is one of the largest non-commercial & bilingual basketball statistics analysis group websites in the world...!
To close anyway this celebration, thanks to Yahoo,
we invite you to fun little Flash retrospective,
where Yahoo revisits 100 memorable icons and events from the
last 10 years of the web... Enjoy !
Happy Birthday, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
eBA-Stats.com® Group wishes to everybody,
our publishers, editors and registered members,
our friends coaches participants in the courses and clinics,
our advertisers and sponsors,
our readers and thousands of daily guests,
our families, colleagues and personal friends...
( clicking here you can read it in all
the languages spoken
in our basketball statisticians community .... )
A Happy Birthday, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
May the season bring you joy and good cheer!
Onward ! ...
Our first ten years were about finding a voice, an audience, and a cause worth fighting for.
Please join us for what comes next.
We are together today, see you tomorrow !
...by the way, ten years ago also, on September 27 1998, Google, with three employees - Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Craig Silverstein, began life in a friend's garage...

Basketball News: Steps Forward for the FIBA Central Bureau

The Central Bureau of FIBA, the highest executive body of the International Basketball Federation, met at their fifth meeting of the term 2006-2010, in Geneva, Switzerland, being impressed by the quality of the presentations from China, Italy and Spain, the three candidate countries to host the FIBA World 2014.
Then the most important decisions of the meeting:
1. First FIBA World Club Championships for 2010:
The Central Bureau agreed that the first World Club Championship will be played in October, 2010 and will be an annual event with the best eight teams in the world.
Talks on this event continue and the Chinese cities of Chengdu and Nanjing have already expressed interest in playing host for this event along with other cities.
The Championship will be open for the five champions of the FIBA Area Tournaments (5 teams) and the runners-up of FIBA Europe and FIBA Americas. The last club will be invited by the hosting city (and approved by FIBA).
The 1st FIBA World Club Championship will be played in five days on the second week of October, 2010 and for a total of ten games. The winner will receive one million dollars.
2. 2009 WADA Code:
The new 2009 WADA Code (doping) was approved. FIBA Central Bureau also expressed concern at the practice and legality of the new requirements and are waiting to speak to WADA and other international federations.
FIBA Central Bureau also approved the start of testing outside competitions from 2009 onwards.
3. 2010 World Championship:
The FIBA Central Bureau received detailed reports of the World 2010 in Turkey, including a commitment of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the government together with the Federation of Turkey. The Central Bureau expressed concern about the feasibility of making the World Cup 2010 in Turkey, taking into account the aspects required to host an event as important as this.
The steps taken in the coming months will be crucial and will be monitored by FIBA.
4. Mexican Federation:
The FIBA Central Bureau acknowledged the Mexican Basketball Sports Association, chaired by Dr. Modesto Robledo Robledo, as the National Basketball Federation in Mexico.
The next meeting of the FIBA Central Bureau will be held on 23 and May 24 in Geneva, Switzerland where the host of the 2014 FIBA World Championshiop will be named.

Statistician's Digest: When a Shooting Foul is called ? - Statistical Registration
... When a player is fouled in the act of shooting while going to the basket, so we have a "shooting foul" :
a.- when the player is fouled as soon as he ends the dribble; or
b.- when the player had to at least make some attempt at throwing the ball towards his basket ? ...

The rule-books describe it as the "habitual motion" that precedes a shot. About this are we speaking ? But I don't think that it's only to "make" a shooting movement, but to really attempt at throwing the ball, in order to be called a "shooting foul".
Trying to give an example about that "habitual motion" that precedes a shot, which is certainly possible for a shot attempt to begin as soon as the player picks up his dribble: the most common example is a layup. In this instance, the player intends to shoot well before the dribble is picked up, but by rule, it is only a shooting foul if the dribble has ended.
There another two posts about this topic to read: When a Shooting Foul is called ? - Statistics Registration y Shooting Foul - Statistical Registration.

A New Feature at Basketball-Statistics.com: Charting Defense
From Basketball-statistics Blog

"... As I’ve mentioned before, there are many issues with the current stats out there intended to measure individual defense (including mine). The best way to really analyze a player is to watch the games and record your observations. ..."
"... Kobe Bryant picked up at midcourt by Ron Artest, he moves right off Gasol’s screen, room for Bryant in the lane as he goes up for the throw down! Artest gives up the bucket to Kobe, but is that really fair? What about Yao, should he have hedged the screen? Maybe Artest could have fought through or around it and stayed in front of Bryant. What about after that — shouldn’t Carl Landry have stepped in to contest Bryant’s shot or take a charge? Or was McGrady in position to step in? This is the problem with the defensive metrics available today. They mean relatively little when looking at individual plays, where every defender has a job to do, and one failure leads to the failure of the entire defense. ..."

Statistician's Digest: How Many Possessions a Player Uses ?
"... I was thinking about the fact that big men score more efficiently, and use less possessions to get their statistics, and guards averages three times as many assists as them, thus making the big men more valuable. The question is if there is at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System a statistic that tracks how many possessions an offensive player uses to obtain his numbers. ..."
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System want to know how "efficient" a player is with the amount of possessions they use and, therefore, applies the Usage Rate ( see the eBA Basketball Encyclopedia ): UR measures the number of possessions a player consumes per 40 minutes, and is calculated
40 * (Lg Pace / Tm Pace) * ((FGA + 0.44*FTA + 0.33*AST + TO) / Min)
"Pace" is an estimate of the number of possessions per 48 minutes by a team, and is found by
48 * ((Tm Poss + Opp Poss) / (2*(Tm MP / 5)))
Also, looking at any stat on a per-minute basis (for example, pts/40 minutes) is a better measurement of who's doing well, being a good idea to avoid the use of per-game stats completely in the modern basketball game analysis.

Statistician's Digest: Extra Possession Stats Registering
Transcription of a Chat eBA 120 - Analysis System Clinic:
1st. Participant: "... In the situation of two points scored, received shooting foul and a free throw bonus, if it's made, no problem we have one ended possession.... but:
What happens if the free bonus throw is missed ?
We have and extra possession.... so how to register this situation ? ..."
2nd. Participant: "... Normally I assign a steal every time a player scores and receives a foul, as he gets an extra-possession. Anyway I keep this steal out of the o.e.r. calculation. For the same reasons, I assign a turn-over to the player who commits a foul and allows a basket. Thoughts ? ..."
Free Bonus Throw missed gives an extra possession which is registered AS IF: as an extra possession. No steal and no turnover is possible: this actions badly unbalance the O.E.R.

DVD Description:
Basketball legend Lenny Wilkens, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach, is the engaging and expert host of this pair of instructional videos. Each tape, one focusing on skills of offense and one on skills of defense, follows a no-nonsense format: a friend of Wilkens, NBA coach Dick Helm, presents a brief lesson on a particular skill (such as specific nuances of dribbling or passing), and young athletes are shown performing the skill the way it should be done.
Then it's time for Wilkens to use his "chalkboard." The videotaped action is frozen while Wilkens draws on the screen with a "telestrator," literally highlighting particular points that require special attention. The coaches present a comprehensive set of skills, including ball handling, passing, and shooting on the offense tape, and pointers on stance, pressuring the ball, particular defensive maneuvers, and defensive rebounding on the defense tape.
The camera work is professional throughout, and a booklet that accompanies the tapes serves as both a table of contents for the tapes and a workbook, as it contains pointers on the skills covered in the video presentations. This is an excellent set of instructional tapes and would benefit any players who seriously want to improve their game.
Get in the game with Lenny Wilkens enhanced edition DVD of his classic basketball clinic series. Lenny and Dick Helm show you all you need to know to get your team to the playoffs! Legendary coach Lenny Wilkens teams up with Dick Helm to lay out the fundamentals of one of America's most dynamic and challenging sporting events: basketball.
Wilkens who holds the title as the most successful coach in the NBA (based on his impressive tally of wins) teaches beginner coaches and players how to run and read the floor handle the ball drive to the basket work with teammates and more. Includes the coach's video chalkboard. real strength is in its emphasis on teaching basketball fundamentals correctly.
Basketball Skills is an outstanding resource, potentially valuable to novice as well as experienced basketball coaches.
It is highly recommended for serious sports collections.

Statistician's Digest: Correlated Gaussian Statistics Method
We can calculate the winning percentage to points scored and allowed
using the "Correlated Gaussian Method" explained at the eBA System Area.
It is a method that relates winning percentage to points scored, points allowed, the standard deviations of points scored and allowed, and the correlation between points scored ( which can be replaced with offensive rating ) and points allowed ( which can be replaced with defensive rating ).
"Points scored" can be replaced with "offensive rating" and "points allowed" can be replaced with "defensive rating".
eBA Stats doesn't applies this method which is fully explained at the "Journal of Basketball Studies".
This method is discussed and defined too at eBA System - The Project.

Statistician's Digest: Here is the Bucks "true" winning percentage
From Bucks Diary

"... To find out, I calculated the efficiency differentials for every team the Bucks faced according to venue (home or away). "... Now lets adjust their winning percentage to reflect that. If the Bucks were headed for a .500 season then given their schedule they should have a 0.437 winning percentage at the moment. The Bucks actual winning percentage is 0.375. Adjust that by .062 (theorizing that 0.437 is the team's actual "0.500 level" given their schedule) and you come up with a "true" winning percentage for your Milwaukee Bucks... fully adjusted for strength of schedule and road bias... of 0.438 ..."

Statistician's Digest: Rebound Percentage or Rebound Rate ?
It seems to be a minor terminological problem: in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System we find the terms "rebound percentage" or simply "reb%", meanwhile in another systems it is used "rebound rate".
Applying "reb%" implies that this is essentially a measure of the ratio of taken rebounds to rebounds opportunities. While "rate" seems to be more related to per-minute or even per-possession rebound totals.
In another systems, '% of rebound opportunities', has been interpreted in a few ways. The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System have a disposition to consider rebounds collected by our team were never as 'available' as those obtained by the opponent. That's means, I consider that, analyzing rebounds, your players should be fighting their opponents for the board fighting their teammate for each rebound.
Statistically, against weaker-rebounding teams, players tend to get more rebounds meanwhile sharing rebounds with teammates causes the analyzed player to get a smaller number of rebounds.
From the statistics point of view a player's Reb% is -- percentage of total rebounds --, but not necessarily an acceptable measure of relative ability to rebound.
See this example:
100 Rebounds in a FIBA game ~ Team A obtains 60 and Team B 40.
Players A1 and B1 each get 10 Reb in 20 Min. Since they each played half the game, their Reb% is 10/50 = 20.0
But if we measure by a scale to opponent rebounds only, then A1 got 10 of 60 (16.7), while B1 got 10 of 40 (25.0). This methods give us great deviations.

Statistician's Digest: Who gets really the credit for the steal ?
When we have really a steal ? Which are the guidelines ? For example:
Player A1 from Team A bats the ball away from a player on the Team B, but finally A2 from the Team A gets possession of the ball.
Who gets the credit for the steal ? A1 or A2 ?
We are just studying this statistical category in the eBA ONLINE Basketball Statistics Clinic: the steals. Just to begin the discussion, some definitions:
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally gains control of the ball from an offensive player. This can be done by deflecting and controlling, catching, or batting (to a teammate) a pass or dribble of an offensive player. A steal may happen while the offensive player is dribbling, holding the ball, or by intercepting a pass. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.
This a classical definition. The eBA conception is given in the Basketball Statistics Analysis Course and will be applied in the answer. And now, we are prepared for this question, A1 or A2 ? ...

Basketball Unforgettable Legends: John Houston Stockton
John Houston Stockton (born March 26, 1962) is a retired American professional basketball player (NBA) who spent his entire career (1984–2003) as a point guard for the Utah Jazz of the NBA. Stockton is regarded as one of the best point guards of all time, holding the NBA records for most career assists and steals by considerable margins.
John Stockton averaged a career double-double, with 13.1 points and 10.5 assists per game. He holds the NBA's record for most career assists (15,806) by a considerable margin, as well as the record for most career steals (3,265). He had five of the top six assists seasons in NBA history (the other belonging to Isiah Thomas).

John Stockton, a 10-time NBA All-Star
holds the NBA record for career assists with 15,806 (10.5 per game)
He holds the NBA record for the most seasons and consecutive games played with one team, and is third in total games played, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Robert Parish. He missed only 22 games during his career, 18 of them in one season. As a point of comparison, he played in 34 games where he tallied 20 or more assists.
Along with Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, Elgin Baylor, Reggie Miller, Pete Maravich, and his teammate Karl Malone, John Stockton is considered to be one of the best players never to have won a championship.

Statistician's Digest:
Two players which Play in Different Teams and Leagues
... How can we compare the shooting performance of two players, when they play in different teams and leagues ? ...
The first way is to compute percentages. Percentages alone can be misinforming, however. For example, two basketball players with the same field goal percentages of .667 can have very different information. One could have made 44 field goals out of 66 attempts while the other has made 8 out of 12 attempts.
Since the first player has made a reasonably large number of field goal attempts, his percentage is probably to be very firm and equilibrating; however, the second player has made relatively few attempts so his percentage might be unstable more despite equivalent play over the next few games.
For example, if both players make 2 of the next 5 field goal attempts, their averages would be .648 and .588 respectively.
This is why box scores usually list both the FG-FGA ratio and the percentage after each players' names.
This practice gives a more accurate statistical background of the basketball players' performances.

Team Synergy Part 2: Ball Movement and Team Dynamics
From Rethinking Basketball
Download source here: Team Synergy Part 2: Ball Movement and Team Dynamics
"... After going through an amateurish statistical analysis of ball movement in the WNBA and NBA, I found that it might be valuable, but only one piece of a bigger picture.
I started out by looking at assisted field goal percentage (a/fg) and from there found a synergy statistic that seemed to have some descriptive (though not explanatory) value in terms of a team’s style of play. ..."
"... First, synergy differential doesn’t take turnovers into account and most coaches know that turnovers are extremely harmful. Second, it doesn’t take into account rebounding, something that many good teams do well – NBA and WNBA. Third there’s the problem with using assists as a means of analysis for anything – assists are assigned subjectively and are therefore inherently flawed. ..."

How to Estimate the Points Created and the Player Contribution
When we try to come up with a formula that would indicate how many points a player contributed to his team by scoring, rebounding, assisting, stealing , deflecting or blocking: we always reach the same question:
a player may score points because of a rebound or a blocked shot, but what percentage of those points should be credited to the player getting the rebound or blocking the shot ? How does one define such a percentage ?
It's very possible that a rebound or blocked shot does not lead to a score, so assigning an 'average value' to all rebounds and blocked shot may be inaccurate. So, the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System compare with a different value whether defensive rebounds, blocked shot and steals in general, which can 'create' points. It's possible to go on with this discussion and study the Points Created question at The Formulas !

Harlem Globetrotters and the NBA ~ Historic Strategic Agreement
The Harlem Globetrotters and the NBA reached a strategic partnership agreement by which it, the NBA, will attempt to promote the international recognition level of the Globetrotters, by working hand by hand with them.

Thus, the agreement provides the Globetrotters with the opportunity to participate this year in several acts at the upcoming 'All-Star' Event of the NBA, which will be held next February in Phoenix. The NBA also will also collaborate with the organization and structure of the Globetrotter’s events abroad.
"The Harlem Globetrotters are known around the world and synonymous with family entertainment, we are very pleased to close this collaboration agreement which we know will enhance our efforts to promote constant growth of the sport globally," said very satisfied Heudu Ueberrroth, president of Commercial Collaborations of the NBA.
No less enthusiasm showed Kurt Schneider, CEO of the Globetrotters, following the agreement. "The NBA has always been very good at finding unique ways to marry entertainment and basketball. We believe that our unique view of making basketball along with the wise, expert, and well-established infrastructure of the NBA will conceive an unbeatable combination for both sides," Schneider proudly stated.

Statistician's Digest: How to Calculate 'Turnover Ratio' from the Box Score ?
... How to calculate 'Turnover Ratio' if you have only the boxscore data ? ...
To discover or decide which players on a basketball team are the best at keeping well the ball, you can use turnover ratio. Turnover ratio is the percentage of player's possessions that result in the player perpetrating a turnover.
Discover the stats for the player that you wish to analyze. You can analyze a specific game, a specific season or a player's entire career. The turnover ratio works for any sample size. Clearly, the larger the sample size, the more useful the statistic.
Detect the following stats for a player: turnovers, assists, field goals attempted and free throws attempted. Make sure you get each stat from the same sample size. For example, if you are going to analyze a single game, each stat should be from the game in question.
Multiply free throws attempted by 0.44. Add to that number the total number of field goal attempts. As you know, the eBA System does not apply the 0.44 coefficient. If you are taking the live stats of the game go here to learn the eBA System about the eBA 'Up-to-the-Line' method.
Take the number from the previous pace and add the number of turnovers and the number of assists. The resulting number is known as the total number of possessions. For the more comprehensive eBA formula of 'Possessions' go to Basketball Possessions: About the Concept.
Multiply the number of turnovers by 100. Then take the resulting number, and divide it by the total number of possession. This final number is the turnover ratio. Round the number to the nearest tenth of a percentage point.
Note the similarities or differences of the player's turnover ratio to similar players to discover how each player makes sense in terms of keeping well the ball.

Statistician's Digest: How to Determine Standard Deviations ?
... How do I determine where a player who takes 1000 FGA in 2000 Min in a season, stands in terms of standard deviation as compared to the league rate of FGA/Min ? ...
Make the statistical computation FGA/Min for every player. Find the standard deviation of all those values. And then the formula is:
[ (1000/2000) - (Avg FGA/Min) ] / (stddev)
Also, it is possible to use to use percentiles. Sort all players by FGA/Min, give everyone a rank. Divide the rank by the total number of players in your sample.
Performing this calculation we must not mistake precision with accuracy. Nonparametric elements like percentiles make no hypothesis that is taken for granted about the shape of the distribution: they are more cautious measures and much less likely to return errors at the the highest degrees.
If you're searching leaders in a category, I recommend you to always use nonparametric measures with a common plan with parametric measure, merely to be sure there are no outliers into your results.
The weighted standard deviation doesn't succeed in seizing the unfairness between two players with the same rates in different quantities of playing time. Same rate is as if: that rate and no more. What it would succeed in catching is a significant change between the width of the distributions, having an effect upon the standard scores. The differences between player rates would be involved, but not if they have the same rate.
When analyzing numbers with measures that aren't well fully apprehended, I give preference to study at the numbers from multiple angles. In this case which you propose at your question, I would perform the computations using
1. Percentiles
2. Standard deviation
3. Weighted Standard deviation by minutes
4. Weighted Standard deviation by square root (minutes per game)
and examine and note the similarities or differences of them. There shouldn't be much significant change, but it would be holding the attention if there was.

Fran Fraschilla describes his player evaluation methods to David Friedman
From Fran Fraschilla by David Friedman in Yard Barker
Download source here: Exclusive Interview with ESPN's Fran Fraschilla, Part III
"... Particularly in the past 10 years or so, a lot of statistical analysis has come into basketball, a process that started with Bill James' baseball work.
You see this a lot in the NBA right now. I think that there is value to it but I also think that the trained eye is important. Without leading you to an answer, I'd be interested in your perspective on where you fall on the continuum that ranges from old school people who came up in an era that relied entirely on the trained eye and used only the most basic stats to the people on the other end of the continuum like Dave Berri at Wages of Wins who has the attitude that he does not even need to watch games, that the eye is biased and all that he needs to do is crunch numbers in a certain way and then he knows exactly what is happening.
You basically have two extremes: you have an old school guy who says, 'I don't care about the numbers because I know what I am seeing' and then you have Dave Berri who essentially says, 'I don't watch games. All I do is crunch numbers.'
Where do you, Fran Fraschilla, place yourself on that continuum and what do you think of that whole debate? ..."

Statistician's Digest: Basketball Rebound Rate Formula for Two Players
... How can I make a statistical computation the combined rebound rate for starting frontcourts (PF + C) in my team ?
I know from the eBA Basketball Statistics Course the Reb% formula... but how I make the account for 2 players in place of only one... ...
This is the way to calculate the rate for the minutes when both players are on the court at the same time:
100 * ((TRB player 1 + TRB player 2) * (Tm MP / 5)) / ((MP (both on court) * (Tm TRB + Opp TRB))
It would be also a great work, as the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System applies this formula, to calculate the other three configurations: the two players off, one of them on and the other one off.

Statistics eBA Cases: Downward Flight Ball Interference
... After a shot for a goal by A1, the ball is in the air when it is touched in its upward flight by B2 ( or A2 ). In its downward flight to the basket the ball is touched by B3 ( or by A3 ). Which is the game rule and the statistical register IN EACH CASE according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis ? ...
Rule Fundamental= If, after a field goal attempt, a player touches the ball while it is in its upward flight , all restrictions related to goal tending and interference shall apply.
Game Rule= The contact of B2 ( or A2 ) with the ball in its upward flight is legal and does not change the status of a shot for a goal . However, the subsequent contact with the ball in its downward flight by A3 or B3 is a violation .
eBA Statistical Registration= In the case of B3, two or three points are awarded to team A, without any register against B3 - this possession ends with the basket. In the case of A3's violation, the ball is awarded to team B for a throw-in, with an 'Unforced Turnover' register against A3.

Statistician's Digest: Full Season Per Minute Stats don't Round
... When a player is on the floor for 3 minutes and 31 seconds, the official boxscore enumerate it as 4 minutes. How the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System register the influential impact on the per-minute numbers when multiplied throughout the whole season have those lost 30 seconds ? ...
First of all, there is an open topic about "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board where I'll continue the discussion. But after going there, here you have some thoughts about:
One or some short term data analysis will be determined by random chance. We have studied this issue at the eBA Clinics Chats, and reached to the conclusion that the full season stats don't round game by game, so it's a reasonably exact parameter.
It is assumed that throughout a full season there are as many round-downs as round-ups which would take out significant error or bias by amount of time played but there might be a bit of noise in outlying player game logs.
The discussion continues in the topic: "Per Minute Statistics" in the Statistics & Statisticians Board. ...

Basketball Unforgettable Legends: A Basketball Legend Passes Away

Pete Newell, one of the United States of America basketball legends, passed away last Monday (17th of November, 2008) at the age of 93, leaving a long list of triumphs in his long life.
With Newell as coach, the United States of America won the Olympic Gold Medal at Rome, Italy, in 1960, this after already obtaining various championships at the University level with San Francisco, Michigan State and California.
The spectacular team that he lead to the Gold Medal in 1960 that won eight games out of eight had amongst its members luminaries like Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and Jerry Lucas.
After that, he became a prominent figure as director of various and important training camps where he worked and improved the fundamentals of the game with figures such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Shaquille O’Neal and Ralph Sampson.
Amongst Newell biggest fans stands the prominent and prestigious coach Bobby Knight, known for his long career with the University of Indiana, where his teams were trained under a very similar style to Newell's; of game control, offensive discipline, and tenacity on top of working very hard on defense.

As was said and analyzed in our Basketball Statistics Analysis Clinic, most games are decided in the first few minutes, not the last few on the contrary to popular belief.
Here I translate some lines from the study performed at the eBA System about the topic of starters and substitutes, for the complete analysis go to eBAClinics.com.
...Games Started is a fair first indicator upon which to set an estimate of % of minutes played vs. starters and vs. substitutes. Start a high % of games, make a pretence of a distinctive starter model. ...
...Starters arrive to better stats and they bring them against starters ! Starters who only play a few minutes probably don't play against substitutes much at all. ...
...Starters take more rebounds than substitutes, and so a player's Games Started % ( %minutes vs starters ) should change the status to a proportionate degree the % of rebounds a substitute obtain. ...
... Number of fouls made vary by 50% from high% starters compared with substitutes. The starters render 60-80% of points, rebounds and assists on most teams but substitutes often perform more than 50 percent of the fouls given the deliberate team strategy to use fouls to give from the bench. ...

Statistician's Digest: Ball in the Basket Direction for a Goal or No
... In the case of a ball passed from behind the three-point line enters the basket from above and passes through we have three points made and register of a three pointer. But, what should happen and which would be the statistical register if:
1) the ball is deflected and enters by a defender the basket from above and passes through;
2) the ball strikes the side of the ring or the flange ? ...
According to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System we register as follows:
In the situation 1) we have two cases:
a) when there is no possibility of the ball entering the basket from above and the deflection causes the goal to be successful, then we'll register a two-points goal.
b) when the ball is passed in the direction of the basket with the possibility of entering the basket from above and the deflection does not influence its fly, then a three-point goal shall be registered.
In the situation 2) the ball shall remain live.

Statistician's Digest: 26 Turnovers and 14 Steals...... ?
... Formulas and more formulas.... but pay attention to this Box Score here: the Euroleague's 2006/07 1st. game was played with the game Joventut Badalona 79 vs. Panathinaikos 82....
Joventut Badalona: 8 Steals and 26 Turnovers
Panathinaikos: 14 Steals and 15 Turnovers......
Somebody can explain me how Badalona steals only 8 balls from the 15 Pana's turnovers ? and viceversa ?
I hope that at total points made they didn't messed up....
You are right: if Badalona turnover 26 balls, "somebody" must recuperate them: an opponent [layer or the opponent team.
We said in Statistics doesn't tell the whole story" that statistics in real time loose reality with the quick pace of the modern basketball, specially after the 24 seconds rule: is very convenient to read those message before going on.
Now, we'll do it by parts, the analysis of the box scores is included in the eBA ONLINE Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis Clinic, including my formula to "match" all those numbers shortage: in your question, if Badalona turnover 26 and Pana steals 14, where are the another 12 steals ?
lst. step: are the blocked shots included into the steals totals ( although we know that not every block shot implies a steal and ball control ) ? No.
How we see it ? See the following player's lines Flis, Gaines and Betis from Badalona: they have one blocked shot made and zero steals.
I'll go on with the answer, but it is very useful to go eBA ONLINE to study the complete analysis.
By the way, the next eBA ONLINE Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis Clinic, opens on Monday 02, February 2009. You are Welcome !

When given in this format, the first set of numbers is overall wins - overall losses, in this case 24-2. Following in the example is conference record given as conference wins-conference losses with a designation of which of the 31 conferences the team is in, in this case the 'team example' record in their conference is 16-1 and the conference is Pacific #21.
Also given sometimes is the home, road, or neutral site record of the team (depending on where the game is being played). As with the other two, the general format is wins-losses. Thus, if the team above was playing its next game on the road, it could read as (24-2, 16-1 Pac-10, 12-1 road).

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Kevin Gamble !
Kevin Douglas Gamble (born November 13, 1965 in Springfield, Illinois) is a retired American professional basketball player in the NBA. He is 6'5" and played as a shooting guard/small forward.
Gamble was selected with the 17th pick of the 3rd round (63rd overall) by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1987 NBA Draft. Injuries gave Gamble an opportunity to show his stuff, but, after only nine games, players such as veteran John Paxson and first round pick Ronnie Murphy were working their way back into the equation. He was cut to make room for veteran backcourt talent.
For his NBA career, Gamble averaged 9.5 pts on 50.2% shooting connecting with 36% of three point attempts and making 81% of free throws. He also averaged 2.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 22.4 minutes per game for 649 games. He made $12M dollars throughout his career.

In 2002, Gamble was named the men's basketball coach at the University of Illinois at Springfield in the American Midwest Conference (NAIA). Gamble is the first head coach of the Prairie Stars in the college's history as they just started up their basketball program.
The 2006-07 season saw the Prairie Stars capture their first American Midwest Conference (AMC) regular season title outright, win their second consecutive AMC Tournament and advance to the second round of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Tournament. Gamble's team went 11-1 in conference play and 23-9 overall and his continued success earned Gamble his second American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year honor.

Statistician's Digest:
Disqualifying Foul and Points Scored ~ The additional free throw
... The player A4, in the act of shooting a 3 pointer, he releases the ball and the player B6 punches him with closed hand in his face, the ref whistles and simultaneously sounds the game clock buzzer to indicates the end of the game and the ball goes into the basket, the ref ratify the basket and disqualifies B6, informing about all the events to the game officials .
The question is how many additional free throws the player A4 will shot, one or two free throws ? Which is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System ? ...
According to the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System when we have a situation of any foul continued by a goal we are speaking about an additional free throw, that's means, the player victim of the flagrant foul will throw a free throw and the game is over ( or goes into an eventual over time ); in this example the player made three points and a possible additional point more.
eBA Statistical Registration=
A4, a Field Goal Made for three points + a Received Foul + a Free Throw Attempt.
B6, a Disqualifying Foul Made.
There is no registering of a Turnover, because there is no another possession in this example.

Statistician's Digest: Basketball Power Percentage: for individuals ?
Some additional comments referred to the Floor Percentage (use the Search option to read the previous posts) which is "scoring possessions divided by possessions". This method is used by the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System and applies to teams, meanwhile to individuals is more complicated because scoring possessions and possessions are more complicated to define for individuals.
Three ways about how to calculate Team Floor Percentage:
1. Sum the individual scoring possessions and total possessions and divide.
2. Apply the methods explained in this site at the "eBA Basketball Encyclopedia" in order to calculate the team scoring possessions and total possessions, then divide.
3. Use the Power Percentage.

Be The Coach Basketball Strategy Simulation Game by Brett Freedman
Be The Coach Basketball is a strategy basketball simulation game which puts you in the role of big time college basketball head coach, designed by Brett Freedman.
He tell us "... You've been given a five year contract to build a winner. Recruit from incoming high school stars and junior college transfers. Try out walk-ons and coach up your players skills. Turn Diaper Dandies into All Americans. Build a squad capable of competing for conference titles and national ranking. With planning and a little luck you may claim a National Championship.
The premise of this simulation is that you have been hired as head coach for a college basketball program. Choose a conference, a team and name your coach. Conferences have been pared down to eight teams for scheduling purposes so most are not quite real life. You will be introduced to your returning squad and then get a look at the recruiting pool of graduating high school seniors and junior college transfers. Recruit skill levels will range from 3 to 8. You may attempt to recruit as many players as you like - but your chances of getting any particular recruit decrease when you spread your energies around. ..."

Coaches Digest:
About the different leagues and the Alternating Possession Rule
About the different leagues and the Alternating Possession Rule:
FIBA - On all held ball/jump ball situations during the game (including the beginning of most periods), teams alternate receiving the ball ("alternating possession"), with the team not gaining possession of the initial (tossed) jump ball being the first recipient.
- First half begins with a jump ball; alternating possession at the beginning of all other periods.
- The shot clock shall not be reset if the offensive team retains possession of the ball through the alternating process.
NBA - On all held ball/jump ball situations during the game, play resumes with a (tossed) jump ball
- If the offence retains possession after a jump ball, the clock is reset to 14 seconds or remains the same if there were more than 14 seconds on the clock. If the defense gains possession, the clock is reset to 24 seconds.
- First period and any overtime begin with a jump ball; periods 2, 3, and 4 start with possession based on team winning opening tip (2 and 3 to loser of tip, 4 to winner)
WNBA - On all held ball/jump ball situations, play resumes with a (tossed) jump ball
- Each half and overtime period starts with a jump ball.
NCAA Men - On all held ball/jump ball situations during the game (including the start of the second half), teams alternate receiving the ball ("alternating possession"), with the team not gaining possession of the last (tossed) jump ball being the first recipient
- The game and any overtime period start with a jump ball; alternating possession at the beginning of the second half
- If the offensive team retains the ball due to the alternating process, the shot clock shall not be reset.

Statistician's Digest: Fouled in the Act of Shooting & Missed Layup
"... If a player was fouled in the act of shooting and missed the layup, does it count against that player´s FG%, and if so shouldn't you add his FT% to his FG% ? ...
In terms of statistics keeping, according with the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System:
- if a player is fouled in the act of shooting, it DOES NOT count as a shot attempt and DOES NOT factor into their field goal %;
- FG and FT are independent stats as different categories: so, you can not count FTs as FG;
- a foul on a jump shot also not count against the shooter: if the shooter makes the attempt, then we register a make and an attempt, but if the shooter misses when fouled, we only note the "received foul" by the shooter (but NOT a missed attempt !), the foul made and the FT attempts with it´s result.
Why would you want to punish a player's stats for drawing contact and getting to the line ?

Statistician's Digest: Basketball Possessions & the 'Pace Factor'
"... When talking about basketball statistics analysis, is really the 'pace' the best factor to evaluate the cheerful compliance of a team to run ? I think it better bespeaks which teams, ascribable to endowment or strategy, force turnovers, rebound defensively well, and drop out a good opponent shooting percentage. ...
Possessions per game is a estimate for pace not processed or subjected to analysis.
Unsatisfactory offensive rebounding teams will look quicker than they in actual fact are, as will good defensive rebounding teams: due to the fact that offensive rebounds for one or the other team result in longer possessions, which entails a smaller number of possessions per 40 or 48 minutes.
A high FG% by one or the other team also changes downward offensive rebounds and therefore exaggerates possessions per minute.

Statistician's Digest: Recommended HS-level players Statistics
"... What category of eBA basketball statistics would you provide reasons in favour for HS-level players ? What performs as expected when applied and what doesn't ? ...
The components I recommend in the basketball statistics analysis at HS-level are the following:
At the team level: shooting ( as the most valuable factor to look at related to change for the better in shooting precision ), turnovers, rebounds and FTA
At the player level: shooting ( as the most important individual statistic at the pro level ), turnovers, rebounding, FT shooting on offense; fouls, forcing turnovers; rebounding and opponent shooting on the defensive end.
At the player level, it will be important to analyze which are the most valuable offensive players: that's means the players that can produce in an efficient manner with higher usage rates and which players need to be more characterized by careful choice with their shot in order to be effective.
At the High School level, the effective or Adj FG% = ( Total FG + 0.5 * 3ptFG ) / Total FGA is currently applied.

Rules Corner: Error after a Time-out in the backcourt:
"... A1 requests a 60-second time-out in the backcourt. After the time-out is completed, the official mistakenly gives Team B the ball for a sideline throw-in. B1 performs the throw-in to B2 ahead the official perceives the error.
"Correctable Referee's Error" ? Which is the correct ruling and statistical register ? ..."
This is not a correctable error case; the game should go on. Unmistakably, officials should initiate a course of action to keep off this type of error. There are a lot of methods which can be applied, such as holding the ball under the arm that indicates in the direction the ball will go when the game is restarted.

Basketball News:
The ULEB Competition Model for the Qualification of the National Leagues

ULEB General Assembly held in Barcelona has decided to trust in a competition’s model based essentially on the sport principle for the qualification of the national leagues. The new project guarantees the participation of 30 teams from 25 countries in the Euroleague taking as reference the Champions League.
Yesterday 22nd October ULEB has held a General Assembly with one only issue in the agenda: analysis, assessment, and where appropriate, approval of the competition model for Euroleague and Eurocup, submitted in the last General Assembly held in Paris on 23rd September.
ULEB has explained the main advantages of the project and the differences between that model and the one put forward by Euroleague in Berlin, that was not approved definitively, to the 16 attendance leagues – 15 leagues members of ULEB and the Russian Superleague, invited by ULEB. Russian Superleague is going to be accepted as a full member of ULEB once they have submitted the By-Laws of the league for its inscription.
After a depth analysis of the competition, ULEB General Assembly has decided to trust in the development of a system essentially based on three main principles:
1. Qualification based on annual sport results in national or zonal competitions previously recognized by ULEB.
2. Fulfillment of the minimum requirements of entry and participation established by Euroleague (capacity of the arenas, budget, and so on).
3. To set a dynamic ranking of participation that will determine the number of clubs and leagues, according to the sport relevance.
The General Assembly has agreed that this sporting project, that has as a reference the Champions League, gives the maximum relevance to the qualification in national competitions in both European competitions, Euroleague and Eurocup, and it will allow the global growing of the clubs in national leagues and also in Europe.

Plus Minus no Related to Minutes to Play
... A question about the numbers example at the exposition at the statistics course about the plus minus / rating:
The game was a one point lose ( 87/88 ) and player 1 plays 31 minutes with a net score of 75/72 on court and a plus / minus of +3, meanwhile player 2 plays 9 minutes with a net score of 12/16 and a plus minus of -4.
It is possible to analyze that player 1 would be on court for another minute to win the game ? ...
No, it's NO POSSIBLE to state that conclusion at all: in the same exposition you read at eBA ONLINE ( 'The Plus Minus Rating Analysis' ), it is clearly indicated the following: "A situation when a player have a NEGATIVE rating ON court and a POSITIVE while on bench, MUST NOT be lightly analyzed as this player should have been played MORE minutes."
Performing basketball statistics analysis, we must take into account, using the Plus / Minus Ratings that the overall debate about this rate has dismissed the effect of opponent strength, because + / - rate doesn't measure player combinations for the opponents. On the other hand, there is no way to recognize between players who have good individual but bad team numbers, opposed to players with bad individual statistics but good + / - ratings.
Go Back to eBA ONLINE to read the exposition once again...

Coach's Digest: Basketball Clips: Pete Maravich - Pistol Pete
Peter Press Maravich (June 22, 1947 – January 5, 1988) was an American basketball player known for his dazzling ballhandling, incredible shooting abilities, and creative passing. He learned at a very young age fundamental basketball and ball handling drills from his father, coach Press Maravich. He would follow his father and coach throughout the eastern and gulf seaboards as a young man before exploding onto the National Basketball Association (NBA) in his own right.
Nicknamed "Pistol Pete", Maravich starred in college at Louisiana State University (LSU) and for three NBA teams. Maravich is still the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer, averaging a staggering 44.2 points per game, without the benefit of a three-point line and despite the fact that when Pete was in his first year of college, the NCAA had separate freshmen and varsity basketball teams and freshmen were not allowed to play on the varsity team. Years later former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots Pete took. The coach calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot, 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, which would have given the player a career average of 57 points per game.

Predrag "Sasha" Danilović (Serbian Cyrillic: Предраг Даниловић - Саша) (born February 26, 1970, in Sarajevo, SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, SFR Yugoslavia) is a retired Serbian professional basketball player, considered the best European shooting guard during the 1990s, and current president of his former team KK Partizan Belgrade. Danilović was voted European Player of the Year in 1995, and was the 1998 Italian Basketball League MVP. During his years in Virtus Bologna, he became an idol among team's fans. Still a legendary hero in Bologna, Danilovic remains one of the most charismatic and winning players in European basketball history.

Predrag Danilović - Yugoslavia
1990 Buenos Aires FIBA World Championship Winner
With the national basketball team, Danilović won four Eurobaskets in 1989, 1991, 1995, and 1997. He was also a member of the silver medal winning Yugoslavian team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Even though he was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 43rd pick overall in the 1992 NBA Draft (his rights were later dealt to another team), he spent time playing in Europe before debuting in the NBA. Danilović played for KK Bosna Sarajevo, KK Partizan, and Virtus Kinder Bologna before he was a member of the NBA's Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks from 1995 until 1997. During his two NBA seasons, Danilović averaged 12.8 points per game.
With the Italian team Virtus Kinder Bologna he won four national championships (1993, 1994, 1995, 1998), one Italian Cup (1999) and one Euroleague (1998).

Statistician's Digest: Who makes the contact makes the foul
... An offensive player cross the court passing the lane through, a defender make contact with him but the referee calls the foul on another defensive player saying that this player pushed the teammate who contacted the offensive player.
I was in the conviction that the fouls was always on the player who makes the contact, that's means the player who pushes the opponent against the rules. ...
At the beginning the rules were as you relate: pushing a teammate in order to make him to contact an opponent, the player who pushed was responsible of the foul.
Actually, who makes the contact is credited with the foul and the eBA qualification of the foul will be "neutral" (not "good" neither "bad" foul) because he was not the responsible.

Statistician's Digest: Sorry, Basketball Stats Analysis Not a Science
From David Friedman in 20 Second Timeout

"... I don't expect that people who are making good money peddling their formulas and evaluations will stop doing so just because I have pointed out the flaws in their methodologies but it would be nice if someone who has the resources to do so would at least look into the way that certain statistics are kept, most notably assists. ..."

Basketball News:
F.C. Barcelona officially confirmed that Daniel Santiago

F.C. Barcelona officially confirmed that Daniel Santiago will reinforce the team in season 2008-09. Santiago, who spent the last three seasons in Unicaja Malaga, will fill in the gap that Mario Kasun left in Barcelona's roster this summer.
Santiago averaged 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game in ACB while he stayed in Malaga.
Daniel Santiago successfully passed the usual medical tests after joining team practices and will be the last element incorporated to the team just before the start of the Spanish league, ACB, against the DRV Joventut at the Palau Blaugrana, last Sunday.
After playing in the NCAA of the United States, Santiago played in Puerto Rico before crossing the Atlantic to play at the Italian league with basketball club Varese, who won the championship of the 1999 season. In the 2000-01 Santiago signed with the Phoenix Suns, where he saw little action and ended playing with the Vaqueros de Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
In the 2002-03 seasons, Santiago returned to Italy to play for the Lottomatica of Roma and later returned to the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks. He has won Bronze at the Pan-American Games in 1999, 2001, and 2003 with the National Basketball Team of Puerto Rico and in 2006-07 he as named the best center of the Euro league.

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Grant Hill !
Grant Henry Hill (born October 5, 1972) is an American professional basketball player currently playing for the NBA's Phoenix Suns. He is 2.04 m (6 ft 8 in). As a collegiate and early professional, Hill was considered one of the best all-around players in the game, often leading his team in points, rebounds and assists. His stint in the league has been hampered by career-threatening injuries, notably towards the late part of his career.
Hill became an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2007. On July 5, Hill's agent, Lon Babby, said Hill intended to sign with the Phoenix Suns on July 11 (the first day free agents can officially sign contracts).[4] Hill will earn $1.83 million for 2007–08, with a $1.97 million player option for the next year.
Hill was given permission by Suns Ring of Honor member Alvan Adams to wear his familiar No. 33 with the Suns. Hill has adapted well to the Suns' up-tempo style, averaging double figures in points as a key role player for Phoenix in the early months of the 2007-08 season.
He played in the team's first 34 games before an emergency appendectomy on January 9, 2008, sidelined him for two weeks. Despite being bothered by multiple injuries throughout the season, Hill had his first 70-game season since leaving Detroit, averaging 13.1 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 2.9 apg in the process.

Bo Ryan: Another Hill to Climb
By: Bo Ryan & Mike Lucas
"Bo Ryan is not only one of the great coaches in our game, he is also one of the great personalities. I have tremendous respect for him and really enjoy his perspective on college basketball and student-athletes. He's the kind of person you could enjoy your son playing for." Roy Williams, Head Coach, University of North Carolina
"Bo Ryan is one of the game's finest coaches, and he has come up the ranks the hard way, and the right way. Ryan is substance over flash, and has developed his skills and philosophy outside of the spotlight. Because of his success, Ryan now lives in the spotlight. Ryan is proof positive that a steadfast belief in core principles and an enduring will to compete can carry you to the top. Ryan is really talented, too, a fact that is too often overlooked. Bo Ryan is the real thing." Jay Bilas, ESPN college basketball analyst
Book Description
Bo knows hoops. As a member of the exclusive 500-win club, University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan has the second highest winning percentage among active coaches (with at least 500 victories) in college basketball, second only to North Carolina's Roy Williams. Ryan's formula for success can be traced back to UW-Platteville, where he won four national championships during a memorable 15-year run punctuated by two undefeated seasons. But there was still another hill to climb for Ryan, the all-time winningest coach in Division III history.
After a short layover at UW-Milwaukee, where he coached the Panthers to their first back-to-back winning seasons in eight years, Ryan welcomed the challenge of proving himself all over again at the Big Ten level. And it didn't take long for Ryan to make his mark with the University of Wisconsin basketball program. In his first season, he guided the Badgers to their first share of the conference title in 55 years.
Since then, Ryan has raised the bar to unprecedented heights, leading the Badgers to the four winningest seasons in school history. Ryan's first six teams averaged 23.7 wins per season, capped by the program's first ever No. 1 national ranking and a school record 30 victories in 2006-07. The victory record was broken the next year as the 2007-08 team finished 31-5.
Ryan's competitive fire, attention to detail and commitment to executing the fundamentals has been at the core of his success, along with his signature Swing offense. And it all serves as a valuable road map for young coaches. In his autobiography Another Hill To Climb Ryan talks about the many people who have influenced his journey, beginning with his formative years in Chester, PA., where the 'street-smart'' Ryan nurtured his point guard mentality.
Known as a fascinating storyteller, Ryan also talks about the hurdles and the highlights that accompanied each step, and the importance of developing a plan that will transcend any level of competition.

ATS Definition in Sports Statistics
"... What does "ats" in sports statistics mean ? ...
ATS stands for 'Against The Spread' and is not used in statistics analysis but is a betting term:
there are two manners of betting sides: the moneyline and against the spread. To bet against the spread is to make a wager that will be decided by adding points to one team or the other after the game is played.
Basically the spread allows you to bet on a fair contest where the underdogs are given a theoretical points advantage.
The ATS stats refer to the wins, loses and ties corresponding to the spread results, ATS stats are consequently more a means of judging overperforming / underperforming teams rather than successful / unsuccessful ones which a classic league table exposes.
Example: John bet against the spread that the Lakers (-7) would beat the Bulls. That means the Lakers would have to win by more than 7 points for John to win his bet.

Statistician's Digest: The Importance of Efficiency in Basketball Analysis
From Jon Nichols in NBA Draft
Download source here: NBA Draft ~ The Importance of Efficiency
"...Most people who use advanced basketball statistics would be able to tell you why it’s often more useful to look at measures of efficiency instead of number totals. For example, when looking at how good a team is at offense, it’s better to look at offensive efficiency (how many points a team scores per 100 possessions) than points per game. That’s because offensive efficiency is adjusted for pace, and since teams trade possessions back and forth, it does not really matter how quickly you score. What matters is making the most out of every possession and forcing the opposing team to waste their possessions. ..."

Statistician's Digest: The Possession Evaluation (PE) Method
The Possession Evaluation (PE) is a method of rating a team's performance in three areas of the game: offense, defense, and rebounding.

The formula was developed by Dean Smith and detailed in his book Basketball ~ Multiple Offense and Defense.
PE begins by counting each team's total possessions during the game.
Offensive efficiency is represented by points per possessions (pts/poss or ppp). Defensive effectiveness is the opponent's pts/poss. A superior team should exceed .85 points per possession on offense and keep the opponents below .75 ppp.
"Percent Loss of Ball" (% LoB) is the percentage of possessions that end before a shot (FG or FT) is attempted. This is basically just a way to correct for the overall pace of the game when considering turnovers. %LoB can be used to indicate a team's own ball-handling skills, as well as the effectiveness of their pressure defense. A %LoB of .13 is excellent; .15 to .18 is good. You want to force you opponent into the .22 range.
The differential in the teams' total possessions is an indicator of rebounding. Coach Smith considers a FG attempt as an end to the team's possession; the ball is no longer in their control. If the shot misses, a possession is literally up-for-grabs. The better rebounding team should have more possessions by the end of the game.
To study how Total Possessions are calculated go to eBA Clinics.

Basketball News: Andres Nocioni Proud about his country, Argentina
The Argentinean forward Andrés Nocioni has a solid career in the NBA playing for the Chicago Bulls, yet he feels honored for being able to play for his country, Argentina, at international tournaments.
He said in an interview that he still felt the high of winning the Bronze at the Olympic Games even though he was injured and Manu Ginobili was not able to play at their final game due to an injured foot.

Several days after obtaining the third place at the Olympic Games, where the United States captured the Gold and Spain the Silver, FIBA announced their new world ranking where it was revealed that Argentina was position at the first place in the world.
“I feel a lot of pride for being part of the team that help my country reach the first place in World Basketball in the eyes of FIBA, even more so because we are not a traditionally basketball country." Nocioni said.
FIBA rewarded Argentina for their consistency at international tournaments, having obtained second place at the 2006 World Championship in Japan, Olympic Gold at the 2004 Games in Athens and now the bronze in the last edition of the Olympic Games at Beijing.
Nocioni added "One thing is for sure: I have not played my last game with my National Basketball Team."

Statistician's Digest: Operationalizing Interestingness in Basketball
From David Sparks in The Arbitrarian
Download source here: The Arbitrarian ~ Operationalizing Interestingness
"...Obviously, there are innumerable ways to conceptualize "interestingness" in basketball--amount of interpersonal drama, perhaps, or exciting style of play--but today I'm going to present a series of different takes on interestingness, and apply these measures to the NBA. ..."
"... First, since several of the following definitions of interestingness rely on it, I want to define a very simplistic and abstracted way of predicting game outcomes. First, imagine that you have two coins, each of which has a 50% chance of landing on heads, and a 50% chance of landing on tails. What are the odds of the various possible outcomes from flipping both simultaneously? ..."
"... One final means of defining interest as we head into the 08-09 season, is potential. Every player, at any given time, has a certain level of productivity, and this level of productivity varies in generally predictable ways: usually it takes several years in the league to climb to peak productivity, which is maintained for several more years, before a decline sets in. Typically, players are their most productive in the middle of their careers--rarely do they peak in their rookie year, and even more rarely do they leave the league at the top of their game. ..."

One-on-one: Rudy Fernandez in America
"On Sunday, I'll travel to America to begin my career with the Portland Trail Blazers.
I played in my second Olympics at the Beijing Games with the Spanish and had very good displays in several contests, including a narrow title-game defeat to the United States...
I am prepared to go up against the best players in the world at club level, too." Rudy Fernandez said.
"This is a unique experience that I wanted to live,".
"Whether it goes well or not, I will have at least had the chance to experience it. To return early would not be a failure. I am prepared for that challenge." Fernandez said.

"The coach has a lot of confidence in me and wants me to be an important member in the team,".
"My aim is to play minutes."
"My mother will accompany me on my trip to America and live with me for the first two years." Rudy concluded.
Fernandez averaged 13.1 points per game in Beijing, although in Spain's toughest clashes he was far more influential.
In an overtime win over China, Fernandez had 21 points and in the semi-final against Lithuania, he poured in 18.
In the gold-medal showdown with Team USA, Fernandez made five three-pointers and finished with 22 points.

Statistician's Digest: Giving Statistical Credit for an Assist
"... Which are the rules on giving credit for an assist? How do you define when an assist is given. If the pass was made and the receiver dribbles before making the basket is it an assist? How many dribbles before it's no longer an assist? As long and the receiver of the pass is immediately going for the basket is there a rule on giving the assist? Does there have to be no dribble at all to get credit for the assist? ...
Assists is the most popular thematic in our eBA Stats Group sites, so you can:
- in the eBA Forum look below for the Topic: "Assists, A question about Assists"';
- in the Global Basketball Encyclopedia look for the eBA Discussion about "Assists";
- go to eBA ONLINE
The Stats Definition, as follows, "a pass that lead directly to a basket", we apply for Live Stats and lead to use by the stats men on the court.
"Any assist is credited to the player tossing the last pass leading directly to a field goal, if and only if the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating immediate reaction toward the basket.
No more than one assist is to be credited for each field goal."
But working at basketball Analysis, the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System is very much flexible:
- an in-bounds pass can be an assist, if it leads directly to a field goal;
- dribble may be made if the player are not using it to evade an opponent;
- bounces can be taken if they don't help the shooter to pass by another player... So, we take in question, we are working for a Coach which wants to know REALLY which players promotes SHOOTING OPPORTUNITIES for their teammates. A full chapter about this idea is dedicated at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System from the Prof. Roberto Azar, and an excerpt will be edited at eBA ONLINE in the next expositions of the current course. At the same place you can read and study about his "2nd. Assist" concept

Rules Corner: Pass thrown to the backcourt from the frontcourt:
"... Out-of-bounds from player's offensive end of the court:
1 - can the ball touch the frontcourt before entering the backcourt towards the receiver player ?
2 - or must the ball be thrown directly to the player in the backcourt ? ..."
I believe, because of the question, that you are talking about USA rules.
Now, in both USA and International Rules ( FIBA ), a backcourt violation happens when, simply but correct, all three of the next statements are met in succession:
1- Team A has team control of the ball
2- Team A is the last to touch the ball in the front court
3- Team A is the first to touch the ball in the back court
In USA rules the player is allowed to pass the ball into the back court on a throw in, because according to those rules, there is no team control in a throw in. Therefore the first criteria is not met so where the ball touches before the receiver catches it is not important.
In International Rules, teams do have team control when they have the ball for a throw in. Therefore the player is not allowed to pass the ball to the back court on a front court throw-in.

Basketball News: The rules for the FIBA 33

The National Basketball Federation of Panama (FEPABA) has announced that they are considering establishing a tournament in the capital city of that country based on the rules for the FIBA 33 just before the current year ends.
The tournament will make use of the new rules set out by FIBA for a variation of the game which consists on playing in a half court with just four players (3 players and one substitute), a referee and a couch per team. A game for this rules, will be completed in three sets of five minutes in which the teams will try to reach the goal of 33. Whoever ends up with the most wins. The game will also have three game officials at the desk and a shot clock set at 14 seconds.
This variation on the game has been approved by FIBA and it will be proposed for world class competitions and will have its debut at the first Summer Youth Olympic Game, at Singapore in 2010. 20 National Teams, both men and women, will be playing at that tournament.
If approved, FEPABA foresees that the tournament will take place this very same year anywhere from October to November. The tournament will hold games for both Men and Women divisions and will try to have representation from every corner of the Federal District and will try to move on to the national level by the summer of 2009.

Basketball News: Last Comments from Mexico and Puerto
The LNBP goes live at Mexico
After a five month break, last Wednesday was the kick off for the National Professional League of Mexico (LNBP) with three new teams for this season: Loros de Colima, Potros ITSON and Estrellas Indebasquet.
Los Loros have veteran player, center Juan Valenzuela, and prized US import players, Leroy Davis, who played at Georgia Tech, Marlo Dumont, who saw action with TCU and Byron Burnett, of the Florida International University.
Meanwhile, Potros signed Cedric Patton, who had a solid season with the Caballeros de Culiacán and also signed Joe Chapman, graduate from Marquette University with an outstanding stint in the Czech Republic's Professional basketball league, averaging 13.1 points per game.
Moreover, Estrellas de Indebasquet home town will be Mexico City, a town without a professional team since the 2005 season. The boast several local veteran players such as Rafael Sandoval and Alfonso Lopez.
José Juan Barea, the MVP
As expected, the NBA's Dallas Mavericks point guard, José Juan Barea, became the most valuable player of the 2008 edition of the Centrobasket Championship, closing the event with 111 points, 12 rebounds, and 32 assists.

“It feels very nice to have won this trophy, but it falls short to winning the championship along with your country's teammates, which was the goal and happily we were able to make it happen. We had a great rival with the US Virgin Islands, who played very well; we also fell under the heavy hand of fatigue but to our fortune, our bench was able to come on the court and give us the help we needed to finish the championship. This and the fact that everyone was effective were the key factors for our triumph”, explained Barea at a press conference.
Puerto Rico head coach, Manuel Cintrón, praised his players for their competence. “They all deserve praise for their commitment at every game, it was not easy to play these tournaments as they are very physically demanding to any team. They all did good.”, said Cintrón.

Statistician's Digest: Team & Dead-ball Rebounds Definition
A team rebound is credited to the team that is entitled to the ball for a throw-in if the ball has gone out of bounds after a missed goal but before there was player control. However, this does not include cases where the ball is out of bounds because it passes over the backboard or touches the supports or back of the backboard, the ceiling, or overhead equipment or supports, unless the ball was touched by a player after the missed goal but before the ball was out of bounds.
A dead-ball rebound is credited whenever the ball is dead after a missed goal but before it meets the conditions for an ind
