Statistician's Digest: Field Goal Scored for the Opponent

"... What happen when a field goal is accidentally scored for the opposition team, after last being touched by a defensive player ? How is this play ruled and statistically registered ? ..."

Case 1. - The touch by the defensive team was an attempt to block a shot and did not appreciably alter its flight: then such touching shall be ignored.

eBA Statistical Register= If the offensive player that shot the ball is credited with the score, no blocked or altered shot can be awarded.

Case 2. - The touch by the defensive team followed a shot that had obviously missed and the defensive team did not gain control:

eBA Statistical Register= A FGA and FGM is credited to the captain of the offensive team.

Coach's Digest: Player's Scoring Possessions

A resumed thought with reference to that "not specified percentage" in each field about which we are speaking related to 'player's scoring possessions' formulas: referred to assists I understand they must be counted and credited based on the length of the shots, as done at the eBA System. Long shots must be credited with a 25% to the player serving the assist, meanwhile short shots, layups or shots within two meters +/- of the basket, in a relative manner easy shots, must be credited with a 50%. Finally medium range shots would have the credit of a 63% for the shooter and only the 37% for the player serving the assist, quantification which may be a proper average for assist in general.

Therefore, the individual floor % is just a player's scoring possessions divided by his total possessions. This statistic take into consideration all areas of a player's offensive contribution, with the possible omission of his offensive rebounds, which are counted not in a forthright manner in the total possession formula. On many occasions, field goal percentages and free throw percentages are referred as measures of a player's scoring efficiency. For guards, assist to turnover ratios are frequently referred. Individual floor % summarize all this into one number having a purpose. Thoughts ?

Statistician's Digest: Individual Charge Statistical Register

... Can we state that each individual charge taken is equal to a steal ?
It seems to me that it is equal value to that of a steal because in both instances, you take away a possession from your opponent. ...

You wrote that each individual charge taken is equal to a steal. Although in both cases we have a steal I don't agree with this: the value of both actions is not the same. A fair amount of the value of a steal is not just ending the opposition's possession but the fast-break opportunity it provides. We'll go on with this discussion, but an important quantity of some data about the offensive value of a steal is well developed in the exposition about this topic in the eBA Basketball Statistics Register Clinic. Meanwhile use the option "search" of the eBA Forum to look for "steal" and the other messages about this topic.

"I always tried to make clear that Basketball is not the ultimate. It is of small importance in comparison to the total life we live.

There is only one kind of life that truly wins, and that is the one that places faith in the hands of the Savior. Until that is done, we are on an aimless course that runs in circles and goes nowhere......

.......It is most difficult, in my mind, to separate any success, whether it be in your profession, your family, or as in my case, in Basketball, from religion."

Statistician's Digest: Basketball Possessions: About the Concept

When using possessions to rate offenses and defenses, an excellent exercise in getting to know basketball, the benefits of this definition become clear:

"Possession for a team, it is the period of play between when one team gains control of the ball and when the other team gains control of the ball. For an individual, a possession or part of a possession is credited when that individual causes to end his/her team's possession."

We'll analyze the following 2 situations:
1) A player brings the ball up court, takes a 20 foot jump shot and makes it.
2) A player brings the ball upcourt, takes a 20 foot jump shot and misses, but a teammate rebounds, misses the putback, then get his own rebound and finally puts in a layup.
The first situation involves one scoring possession and one total possession regardless of which definition is used.
The second situation has one scoring and one total possession using above definition. Using the other meaning, the second situation involves one scoring possession and three total possessions.
Now, which situation represented the better offense ?

The terminology analysis can be found at the Global Basketball Encyclopedia.

Forum's Digest: Fastbreak Points Per 48 Minutes

"... Does the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System tracks team fastbreak points game by game and current season average ?
May be the actual basketball game is allowing quick players more access to the lane because of a more rigorous and frequent handchecking calls ? May be that scoring and FG shots and possessions are down ? ..."

That's right, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System tracks team fast-break points game by game and current season average. Some numbers about our total season data:

* Officials are currently calling the games nearer, that means more non-shooting fouls. So, teams are receiving added time per possession ascribable to the shot clock getting reset more frequently.
* Scoring and Field Goals shots and possessions are going down and average duration of possession in game clock time is raising: therefore putting all together we can conclude that the pace has decelerated a little.
* Using our possessions formula - see eBA Encyclopedia - and team data from our archives, the average duration of possession reveal us a possession use in a slower pace: moved from 15.83 seconds to 15.88 seconds.
* And finally, fast-break frequency and points made from stayed the same, personal fouls raises 0.57%, turnovers moves lower 0.6%, steals moves lower 4.6%, blocked shots moves lower 3.4%, assists moves lower 3.2%. total rebounds moves lower 2.2%, shooting percentages are raising but field goal attempts moves lower 0.3% and 3 points attempts raises 1.5%.

This topic will be continued and discussed at the eBA Clinics

Statistician's Digest: Total Team Rebounding Percentage

The total number of rebounds taken per 40 / 48 minutes is a very good way to evaluate rebounders but the game analyst must ever take into account that some players have the opportunity to grab more rebounds than others.
A logical way to evaluate rebounders is by percentage of all missed shots when they are in the game that they rebound. This is usually estimated by another systems through their team's and opponent's rebounds per minute, but the eBA Basketball Analysis System uses the exact numbers throughout the quintets analysis per minute. This is known as Rebound Rate or Rebound Percentage (Reb%).

Reb% = Reb / (((TmReb + OppReb)/TmMin)*Min)

The total team rebounding percentage is the average of its offensive and defensive rebounding percentages.

Team OReb% = TmOReb / (TmOReb + OppDReb)
Team DReb% = TmDReb/ (TmDReb + OppOReb
Team Reb% = (Team OReb% + Team DReb%)/2

When we make the rebounds analysis at the team level, rebound percentage takes into account the fact that good teams usually outrebound their opponents because defensive rebounds are easier to get than offensive rebounds.
At the player level, the rebound percentage analysis are divided into offensive and defensive rebounding, which can prove being a clear perception because few players are equally productive at both.
In a combined analysis at both levels the game analyst must take in account that actually offensive rebounding depends to a considerable degree on whether the coach chooses to crash the boards or play back to prevent fast breaks.

Statistician's Digest: The "Points Created" idea of Bob Bellotti

What is the Value of Ball Possession (VBP) and which is its relation with the "points created" idea of Bob Bellotti ?

Bob Bellotti has a different formula for arriving at possessions. It differs in that he counts the stats which begin a possession: opponent's FGs, opponent's turnovers, and rebounds. Instead of trips to the foul line, his system counts opponent's free-throws (divided by 2). It also includes a team's blocks (also divided by 2). It was designed for the NBA game (which has no 1+1), and it is not well suited for the college game and here is the formula:

Points Created =
PTS + AST * (2-VBP) + (REB + STL + BLK) * VBP -
(FGMiss + FTMiss + TOV) * VBP - 0.5 * VBP * PF

Books Review: "Same Knight, Different Channel" - June 2007 eBA Best Seller

Same Knight, Different ChannelSame Knight, Different Channel

By: Jack Isenhour

Basketball legend Bob Knight is fond of saying that he has never gotten over West Point. In Same Knight, Different Channel, Jack Isenhour takes him at his word. A player on Knight’s first West Point team, Isenhour shows how the controversial coach has changed little from his early days at the academy, temper tantrums and all. Knight made up his mind there to "win-gotta win" and follows that philosophy to this day.

Knight’s sentiment was in step with the core value of "there is no substitute for victory" at West Point, where soldiers were being trained to fight and win the next war. So it came as little surprise following Knight’s 18-8 record in his inaugural 1965-66 season-a season in which the twenty-five-year-old hot-headed coach berated officials, totaled chairs, and got into his first shouting match with an athletic director-that West Point chose to keep the young Coach Knight on. What’s a tantrum or two in the name of winning? With that, "Bobby T" was born. Knight’s bad-boy persona-the hair-trigger temper, the acting out, and the defiance-was codified as at least tolerable, if not acceptable, behavior.

Relying on firsthand experiences and interviews with teammates, administrators, and Knight himself, Isenhour traces the pattern of misbehavior established during Knight’s inaugural year at West Point, during his last days at Indiana, and to his reemergence at Texas Tech. The result is the most even-handed portrait of Knight to date. In a narrative both lively and irreverent, Same Knight, Different Channel demonstrates who Knight is today and shows how he was shaped by his experiences at West Point, ending with a thought-provoking discussion of just what it takes to play, coach, and win in the high-pressure world of college basketball...."

Jack Isenhour an award-winning television journalist, was a seldom-used guard on Bob Knight's first Army basketball (1965-66). His premise is that the Knight we know today--controversial, temperamental, successful--was forged by his tenure at West Point when he became the Cadets' head coach at the ridiculously young age of 25. The raw material was there: a fierce competitor in high school and college, Knight was the kid skidding around the court diving after loose balls.

When Army coach Tates Locke resigned to take another position, he recommended that his young assistant succeed him. Knight's inherent competitiveness flourished at West Point during the Vietnam era. He developed a style--stifling defense, patient offense--that maximized the skills of players who were not big and not heavily recruited.

Filled with great anecdotes from former players and Isenhour's self-deprecating replays of his time--yesterday and today--with Knight, this is a compelling look at the early career of a man who will soon become the winningest college coach in history.

Coach's Corner: The Best Drills - Cutthroat Drill

Play three-on-three or four-on-four game called cutthroat which is hugely effective in teaching kids how to move. The rules are simple.

1) The game is best played with three or more teams of four (any leftover players can be rotated in at your discretion). To minimize confusion, each team should have its own practice jersey.
2) Every player on a team must touch the ball at least once before any shot can go up.
3) If a player catches the ball and fails to face the basket in triple threat position before dribbling or passing, it is a turnover.
4) If a player passes the ball, then fails to cut to the basket and fill to an open spot or go screen for a teammate, it´s also a turnover .
5) A player can dribble no more than three times - either to open up a passing lane or to attack the basket.
6) Only the coach is allowed to officiate. Points are automatically and instantly deducted any time a player protests a call.
7) One point is awarded for each basket made, one point for each offensive rebound, and one point for each steal (unforced turnovers don´t count!).

At every change of possession (turnover and defensive rebound) and at every made basket, the ball is passed back to the coach. If there´s been a change of possession, the offensive team *sprints* off the floor and the defensive team goes to offense. The third team, waiting on the baseline, *sprints* onto the court and matches up on defense. The coach encourages this quick change over by passing the ball to the offensive team almost as soon as he receives it. After a made basket, however, it is the defensive team that vacates the floor. The offense stays on as long as they continue to score, which they can only do by passing and cutting and staying in motion.

Statistics Terminology: Ratio Scale

This is a type of MEASUREMENT SCALE for which it is meaningful to reason in terms of differences in scores (see INTERVAL SCALE in the eBA Statistics Encyclopedia) and also in terms of ratios of scores.

Ratio Scale

Such a scale will have a zero point which is meaningful in the sense that it indicates complete absence of the property which the scale measures. The RATIO SCALE may be either unipolar (negative values not meaningful) or bipolar (both positive and negative values meaningful), and either continuous or discrete.

Statistician's Digest: Statistical Registration of a Shooting Foul

If a foul is committed on the shot, (made or missed) does the shot attempt get averaged into your field goal percentage?

Shooting Foul

Two Situations in your question:
1.- If a foul is committed on a shot and the shot is made: the shot attempt GET averaged in the field goal percentage as a "Field Goal Made" and the possession is ended and counted. We have a Foul Made and a Foul Received, too.

2.- If a foul is committed on a shot and the shot is missed: the shot attempt DOES NOT GET averaged in the field goal percentage, from the moment the player receives two or three free-throws from the line and the possession is not ended. For the possessions count in this situation: if the last free-throw of a serial ( of 2 or 3 ) is made the possession end with a "Up to the Line Made" for shooter's team ( see Global Basketball Encyclopedia for terminology; and see the example at the pages uploaded at the eBA System ). If the last free-throw of a serial ( of 2 or 3 ) is missed, the possession end with a Defensive Rebound. An Offensive Rebound gives, you know, a second chance option. Foul Made and Foul received are counted, too.

Statistician's Digest: Individual Statistics Underrated or Overrated

Are the individual statistics of good players on bad teams underrated in raw form ?
Are the individual statistics of bad players on good teams overrated in raw form ?

Some reflexions to begin the discussion:

1) Most teams without their best player will turn down the averages than with and probably lower than league average with the best players still included, so an adaptation must be overdone it in the team analysis in the cases of best players off.

2) There is team influence on player FG% and the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis performs adaptations either in the score or in the evaluation of the score. But our System takes always in account that the player is utmostly agent or cause of the shots he takes.

3) A player on a bad team may take more hard shots and fewer not hurried ones and vice versa on a good team, so the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis takes all of these shots out and analyze the remaining shooting precision.

4) Efficiency connected with statistics might become greater on a better team when the defense needs to move outward and defend so many other menaces. However, from another point of view, the percentage of touches might grow worse. When you're encircled by better players, you might get less touches than if you are the exclusive talent on a bad team.

5) And finally, good teammates among the good players will still get some recognition, bad teammates on the court will not gain as many bonus points and look inferior in individual ratings because of their unsatisfactory influence on other teammate shooting.

Statistician's Digest: Points Created - Player Contribution

"... How much value is placed on an assist ? Like the problems with rebounds and blocked shots, standard formulas try to arbitrarily assign a value to assists that would give credit to the 'assistant' and simultaneously take the same account of credit away from the 'assisted'. Assists, though, unlike rebounds or blocked shots, have a definite scoring possession associated with them: there is no assists without points scored.

An individual floor percentage could be a way for not only evaluate the offensive efficiency of players, but also to calculate the points created by each player.
"Individual Floor Percentage"= scoring possessions by a player divided by his total possessions.
"Player's Scoring Possessions"=
field goals that weren't assisted on
+ a not specified percentage of his field goals that were assisted on
+ a not specified percentage of his assists
+ free throw made that represent a team scoring possession.
"Player's Total Possessions"=
all his scoring possessions
+ his missed field goals
+ free throws that weren't rebounded by his team
+ turnovers.
The question to go on with this topic resides in the value of that "not specified percentage" in each field. ..."

OPINIONS ENCOUNTERED... at the Web

About the Layman’s Guide to Advanced NBA Statistics
"... This guide is intended for those that are interested in modern basketball statistics. In order to make it more accessible, I’ve decided to forgo the formulas and numbers. At times both fans and journalists alike struggle to use stats when it comes to basketball. Often enough, their interpretation is inadequate because they don’t have the right stats to explain what is happening on the court. Even worse is when stats are used improperly to arrive at the wrong conclusion. ..."

Great Basketball Pictures

"... Over the past few years basketball statisticians have learned a lot about the game. While most of it is based on the same stats you would see in boxscores, the findings go far beyond traditional stats. Evaluation on the team level is the most reliable aspect of basketball statistical analysis. In other words, we’re very sure what factors lead a team to victory. Although statisticians aren’t exactly sure how player stats equates to wins, there are many ways to better evaluate individuals than the classical stats. ..."

"... The biggest hole in statistical analysis is defensive stats. Blocks, rebounds, and steals aren’t enough to tell the whole story on what happens on defense. Players who excel in this area of the court usually have strong defensive +/- . However these numbers tend to fluctuate based on the strength of the team. A player that spends a lot of time on the court with strong defensive players will have their defensive +/- inflated. ..." (Mike K. - KnickerBlogger )

Rules Corner: Excessive Swinging of the Elbows:

Great Basketball Pictures
" ...Team is up by 3 with ball control at the end of 4th. quarter, running the clock out waiting for the defensive foul to stop the clock.
Player with the ball, close defender two handed mildly pushed him and the ball-handler, trying to protect the ball, swings his elbows not in an aggressive way but in a defensive way.
The referee blew the whistle and said no foul but it is a
turnover against the ball-handler for "excessive swinging of the elbows".
"Swinging elbows" Turnover is a real rule or an official error ? Forced or Unforced ? Stats Register ? ..."

Rule Statement: "A player shall not excessively swing his/her arms or
elbows even without contacting an opponent." The rules penalty was changed to a violation from a technical foul in order to encourage it's being called more.

Rule Interpretation: Throw-in for the opponents

eBA Statistical Register: Forced (by the opponent's aggressive defense) Turnover.

Happy Birthday: Martell Webster - Portland Trail Blazers, NBA

Martell Webster (born December 4, 1986 in Edmonds, Washington) is an American professional basketball player currently a member of the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA. The 6'7" (2.01 m), 229 lbs (95 kg) shooting guard was selected by the Blazers with the sixth pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. He is nicknamed "The Definition" as a play on his surname (popularized by Webster's Dictionary), given to him by a personal friend. Webster is also the cousin of Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks.

He was assigned to the Fort Worth Flyers of the NBA Development League by the Blazers in January, 2006. He returned to the Portland Trail Blazers in February, and proceeded to score his career high of 24 against Boston Celtics on February 24, 2006. He has family in Alaska and other places around the US. He is one of the last ever high school lottery picks to be chosen in an NBA Draft due to new draft eligibility rules introduced in 2006.

Statistician's Digest: Which is the Real Value of a Steal ?

"... Some analysis systems works upon the argument by which steals are the best defensive play there is, and that it's value will show up on the offensive end, based on the theory that steals lead to easy baskets.
Now, my question is which is the real value of a steal from the point of view that the confirmed and permanent risking for steals costs the defense about as many points defensively ( in open shots and help fouls ) as they get in easy baskets from successfully stealing the ball and converting. ..."

An interesting question and here you have some data for the discussion:
The eBA Basketball Statistics Archives tell us that players who get steals are the most valuable when they are forwards and centers or are players who don't shoot a lot. Nevertheless, that said, I think that players who get steals, on average, tend to be valuable at EVERY position and careless of how much they shoot.

With reference to those players who are "permanent risking for steals", take into account that players who gamble may also hurt their team, but that does not identify the main part of players who get lots of steals. And as we stated at the eBA Clinics last year, to analyze team statistics to measure the value of players ONLY with certain attributes may lead to deceptive results.
