Forum's Digest: Statistical Register from a Held Ball

Which is the statistical register when a defender forces an offensive player into a held ball ( also known as 'jump ball' ) situation ?

Held Ball

If your team loses possession of the ball as the result of a held ball, a ball turnover must be charged. The turnover is charged to the person who last has possession of the ball.

We have a turnover when your team has the ball, and you lose it to the other team. A turnover can come in the form of a stolen pass, a pass that you throw out of bounds, it can be where they steal the ball away from your dribbler, it can be where you have a player stand in the paint for over three seconds, etc., etc, etc.

When the turnover does occurs or when a bad shot is forced during an ON BALL screen situation, that's means there is a direct influence of an opponent action: the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System referees to it as a FORCED TURNOVER. When the turnover does occur WITHOUT any opponent influence or interference: a bad pass you YOURSELF throw out of bounds, we call it an UNFORCED TURNOVER.
The value of the turnover, doesn't vary in our metric, being the same for both types, but the eBA System report give to the coach the total quantity and percentages of Forced and Unforced Turnovers by separate, leading so to a deeper analysis of our possessions.

Coach's Digest: Today Formula - Offensive Rebound Rate

Offensive Rebound Rate =
Offensive Rebounds/(Offensive Rebounds + Opponents' Defensive Rebounds)

This factor divides offensive rebounds by the number of offensive rebounding opportunities. The often-used rebounding totals and rebounding margins are less useful because they depend on the number of shots missed. If your team misses a lot of shots, it's more likely they will get more offensive rebounds. The other thing rebounding rates do is separate what happens at the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Offensive rebounds should be compared to opponents' defensive rebounds. Defensive rebounds should be compared to opponents' offensive rebounds.

"... I am sometimes amused and ALWAYS disappointed by coaches who talk about running these "exotic" deployments...multiple zone presses, fast break offenses, flex offenses, triple post, trapping schemes, etc. And then they tell you they are coaching 3rd grade, or fourth grade, or even sixth grade and seventh and that they are doing these things "successfully". ..."

One-on-one: with Joan Plaza - Real Madrid Head Coach

"I set my sights on achieving something "extraordinary" this season as Head Coach of the Real Madrid, namely winning the Euroleague." Plaza - 43-year-old - says.

"I know people want us to reach the Final Four this year because it will take place in Madrid, and Real have been crowned European champions eight times in their illustrious history, but not since 1995"

"We haven't been in one for 11 years, but we want to do our best and live that experience. It would be amazing to be in it in our home town. I don't know what crazy things I would be capable of doing if we won."

"We have a greater desire to win than sides like Panathinaikos and CSKA Moscow. We don't have their budget, but our drive is stronger because we haven't won it recently unlike them and our history says we are the side with the largest number of European titles.

Why wouldn't we be able to win it, then? It would be something extraordinary." "

"When I signed my first contract with the club, nobody thought I would be here for four years."

"My father told me to feel at home wherever I am given a chance. I am proud of staying longer at Real Madrid with people who have had faith in me. I wish I can pay them back with titles and good play. I am very grateful to them for their trust."

Statistician's Digest: Quantitative Sports Analysis

"... I will say that the improving of quantitative sports analysis in general - is becoming even more and more important. The field is broad open, developing at a fast pace.
But in order to be a rightfully effective statistician, one must not totally ignore the qualitative principles and values. Should we leave qualitative representations to the journalists and sports writers ? Can phenomenological and constructionist viewpoints get in the way of objectivity ? Perhaps, but I think we all agree that unless statistics & statisticians are god, they cannot look at anything with 100 percent objectivity and that qualitative principles and values can add more valuable insights and variables from perspectives not taken into account, and supplement quantitative assumption based on an observation. ..."

Coach's Digest: About Steals

In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally gains control of the ball from an offensive player. This can be done by deflecting and controlling, catching, or batting (to a teammate) a pass or dribble of an offensive player. A steal may happen while the offensive player is dribbling, holding the ball, or by intercepting a pass. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.

Stealing the ball requires concentration, good anticipation, speed and fast reflexes and good hustle, all common traits of a good defender. However, like blocked shots, steals aren't always a perfect gauge of a player's defensive abilities. An unsuccessful steal can result in the defender being out of position and unable to recover in time. Therefore, a steal is a gamble. And a steal usually leads to a fast break, the most exciting play in the sport.
If an offensive player loses possession of the basketball due to a steal, he/she is recorded as making a turnover and the defender is recorded with a steal, forced or unforced depending upon the play development.

Steals

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System registers, in addition to the traditional stats, the points made from the forced and unforced steals done during the game. This number is not always similar, as people usually thinks, to the opponent's points off turnovers.

There is no necessarily prototypical position from which a player may get many steals from. While smaller, quicker guards tend to accumulate the most steals, there are many exceptions. For example, forward Rick Barry led the NBA in steals in 1974-75, and for many years center Hakeem Olajuwon lead his team in the category, consistently ranking among the league's leaders. Therefore, the eBA System registers the area and the whole situation where the steal occurred.

Steals were first recorded in the NBA's 1973-74 season. Kendall Gill ( on December 26, 1976 ) and Larry Kenon ( on April 3, 1999 ) are tied for most steals in a regular season NBA game with eleven.
The most steals in an NBA season is 301 by Alvin Robertson in 1985-86.

BASKETBALL UNFORGETTABLE LEGENDS: PAT RILEY, THE PLAYER

Patrick James "Pat" Riley (born March 20, 1945) is an American National Basketball Association head coach and team president of the Miami Heat. Widely regarded as one of the greatest NBA coaches of all time, Riley has served as the head coach of five championship teams and an assistant coach to another.
He most recently won the 2006 NBA Championship with the Miami Heat. Prior to his tenure in Miami, he served as head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks. He also played for the Los Angeles Lakers' championship team in 1972, which brings his personal total to seven NBA titles.

Pat Riley

Pat Riley, the player - 1966

Riley played for Linton High School in Schenectady under New York State coaches Walt Przybylo and Bill Rapavy. [1]. Linton High School's 74-68 victory over New York City's Power Memorial on Dec. 29, 1961, is remembered mostly for its two stars: Power Memorial's Lew Alcindor, who later changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; and his future coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, Linton's Riley.
One of the greatest games in the history of Schenectady basketball, Riley said in 1991. Riley was a versatile athlete in college, participating in both basketball and football.

He led the 1966 University of Kentucky basketball team, coached by the legendary Adolph Rupp, to the NCAA title game, where they lost to Texas Western (now known as UTEP), a game that was immortalized in the movie Glory Road.
He was selected by the San Diego Rockets in the 1st round of the 1967 NBA Draft, and was also drafted as a flanker by the Dallas Cowboys in the 11th round of the 1967 NFL Draft. He joined the Rockets and later signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, helping them win the 1972 NBA Finals.
After a relatively undistinguished playing career, he retired in 1976 as a member of the Western Conference champion Phoenix Suns.

Statistician's Digest: Plus Minus Ratings

"......With regard to this item: I like the plus-minus statistic - how does the team perform with Player A on the court, compared to how they perform without him - but as some of the other articles you point to probably say, this measure can be problematic. A major issue is efficiency: there can be a lot of "noise" --- stochastic variability --- in the stat. Fortunately (from the point of view of a plus-minus statistic) Basketball has a lot of scoring and a long season, so stochastic variability is much less of a problem than in, say, baseball or hockey. But still, you really want/need to adjust for quality of the other players on the court (on both teams). It's also desirable to adjust for the game situation: in a blowout victory or loss, little or nothing is learned from performance in "garbage time," for example. Of course, some of the same problems come up with any analysis, whether plus-minus or not. No matter how you slice it, you're looking at a non-trivial bit of analysis. That said, I like the plus-minus approach. ......."

One-on-one: with Sergio Hernandez - Argentine Head Coach

"I believe qualifying for next year's Olympic Games has enhanced my reputation and changed my life, because without four of their six NBA stars, we managed to clinch one of the two Olympic spots available through the FIBA Americas Championship played in Las Vegas earlier this year." Hernandez says.

“It was a very important tournament for me because I took over the national team after an Olympic title. "

"There was not too much confidence in me. They thought stars like Manu Ginobili and Andres Nocioni, who play in the NBA and won the Olympic title, would not accept being trained by a domestic league coach."

Sergio Hernandez

"If I had trained any local team, I would be given respect, but things are very different in the national team, so the FIBA Americas Championship was useful to get respect and to know it's not just a matter of Ginobili and the star players."

"There is also Paolo Quinteros, Leonardo Gutierrez, Federico Kammerichs, Roman Gonzalez, Alejandro Porta and Prigioni who can all make things happen too."

"Our team left Argentina with several doubts. People did not believe Argentina could make it to Beijing and sometimes a lack of confidence makes a team stronger."

"Argentinian players have strong mind, competitive spirit and the experience of Luis Scola and Pablo Prigioni made the group take the responsibility to clinch an important goal."

"Now, resumes Hernandez, it will be more difficult to pick the 12 names to play the Olympics."

Statistics Terminology: Histogram

A histogram is a way of summarising data that are measured on an interval scale (either discrete or continuous). It is often used in exploratory data analysis to illustrate the major features of the distribution of the data in a convenient form. It divides up the range of possible values in a data set into classes or groups.

Histogram

For each group, a rectangle is constructed with a base length equal to the range of values in that specific group, and an area proportional to the number of observations falling into that group. This means that the rectangles might be drawn of non-uniform height.

Bird Erving Fight
Photograph: Vedia PhotoStream

Bird ~ Erving Fight, 11/9/84

On November 09, 1984 in the Boston Garden Larry Bird and Julius Erving went toe-to-toe against each other on the court. That night the Celtics were pounding the Sixers, and a frustrated Erving (who was held to six points) and a red-hot Larry Bird (who had 42) began throwing punches at the end of the third quarter. Both were ejected and fined $7,500 each. Players on both teams were fined for their involvement, including a rookie named Charles Barkley, who scored 27 points off the bench up to that point. The Celtics won 130-119.
